00:01:00The state of mind.
00:01:01Every day is a chance to take one step closer to where you want to be in your career.
00:01:07Today is a gift.
00:01:09Manhattan.
00:01:11We are not in Manhattan anymore.
00:01:16Now eat that pretty.
00:01:22Excuse me.
00:01:23There's Starbucks around here?
00:01:26Nope, but there's a Dottie's around the corner.
00:01:28Only two stars on Yelp.
00:01:30Oh, this is the best place in town.
00:01:32You gonna trust us or you gonna trust your phone?
00:01:34I guess I'll take your word for it.
00:01:36Can I get you guys anything?
00:01:38I'll have a bear claw.
00:01:40Make that two.
00:01:42All right.
00:01:43And a cruller.
00:01:45Okay.
00:01:45And I'll have orange juice.
00:01:47No poke.
00:01:49Okay.
00:01:50Sure.
00:01:51You got it.
00:01:53Well, he did say anything.
00:01:54There you go, hon.
00:02:04Hey, what can I get you?
00:02:07Um, do you have an Ethiopian roast?
00:02:11Nope.
00:02:12Sumatra?
00:02:13I don't think so.
00:02:15What do you have?
00:02:17Coffee.
00:02:18Sounds perfect.
00:02:21Oh, you wouldn't happen to have soy?
00:02:23Never mind.
00:02:31Visiting family in the area?
00:02:33I'm here on a job.
00:02:34Till Christmas, probably.
00:02:36Oh, before I forget, um, could I get two bear claws, a cruller, and an OJ?
00:02:43No poke, please.
00:02:44You met Earl and Felix, huh?
00:02:46Welcome to Hudson Springs.
00:02:48And you are?
00:02:50Clay.
00:02:52Well, Clay, I'll get you a to-go box.
00:03:03Hey.
00:03:05Oh, she's a beauty, Delaney.
00:03:08Thanks, boss lady.
00:03:10All right, Scott.
00:03:11You can smile.
00:03:13The holiday season has officially begun.
00:03:15Hey, uh, Halloween was my thing.
00:03:17Christmas was always yours.
00:03:18Oh, I guess I get that from Dad.
00:03:20Oh, he sure did love this season.
00:03:22This first Christmas without him is going to be a lot easier with you two here.
00:03:26I'm so glad we're together.
00:03:28I mean, I know you're just itchy to get back at work.
00:03:31No, Mom, I wanted to be here.
00:03:33I mean, we all know how important this season is for the farm's survival,
00:03:36and I'd hate for us to have to sell the place.
00:03:38Oh, come on, Scott.
00:03:39We'll be fine.
00:03:40We always do well during the holidays.
00:03:43I know.
00:03:43All I'm saying is the bottom line is now my responsibility.
00:03:46Well, people don't just come here to buy a tree.
00:03:49They come for the Christmas tradition.
00:03:51The experience.
00:03:52Just like Dad used to say.
00:03:54Which is my specialty.
00:03:57Art and commerce, which is why I am so proud of you both.
00:04:02Now, get to work.
00:04:04Yep.
00:04:04Yes, ma'am.
00:04:04You have your Norris?
00:04:14Yeah.
00:04:15Claymore from corporate.
00:04:17Oh, no.
00:04:17What's wrong?
00:04:18Nothing's wrong.
00:04:19Oh.
00:04:20Okay.
00:04:21Here, have a coffee.
00:04:23Oh.
00:04:23HQ sent me up here last minute to help with the launch.
00:04:26Are you ready to help me make this store hit by Christmas?
00:04:29Yeah.
00:04:31Yeah.
00:04:32But I'm not sure about anybody else.
00:04:34People around here aren't exactly thrilled about HGS opening up in Hudson Springs.
00:04:38Another reason why I'm here.
00:04:39I saw the market research.
00:04:40There's some resistance we'll need to overcome.
00:04:42But if there's one thing I know how to do, let's get people in the door.
00:04:45I hope so, because we open in two hours and...
00:04:47Trust me.
00:04:48People of Hudson Springs will come around when they realize our wide selection and low, low prices can't be beaten.
00:04:53You know, he's not exactly like the commercials.
00:04:55Yeah, that's what I was going for.
00:04:56Follow me, Xavier.
00:04:59Uh, what's all this?
00:05:00Our first sales promotion.
00:05:02Christmas trees.
00:05:03Ooh.
00:05:04You know it.
00:05:06Let's set up a tree pen over here.
00:05:0750 by 50 should do it.
00:05:10Hey, can you line up the trees by size?
00:05:11Small, medium, large, and jumbo?
00:05:14Wow.
00:05:14Uh, those prices are so, uh, low.
00:05:18These trees are a proven loss leader.
00:05:19They're bringing the customers.
00:05:21Sales go up.
00:05:22Corporate's happy.
00:05:23We look like heroes.
00:05:24I don't think that's going to work.
00:05:26Yeah, it works all the time.
00:05:27Proofs in the spreadsheet.
00:05:29Let's put a dozen inflatable trees out front, the ones that light up.
00:05:32And where can I set up home base, Xavier?
00:05:33Um, hey, it's so nice to see you.
00:05:36I've got a cookie for you.
00:05:38And some cider.
00:05:40Hello there.
00:05:40Got some hot cider.
00:05:43Yeah.
00:05:43There you go.
00:05:44Enjoy.
00:05:44Thank you very much.
00:05:48Oh, my goodness gracious.
00:05:51Oh, goodness gracious.
00:05:52Jessica.
00:05:54Jessica.
00:05:55We can't pay the bills with farm animals.
00:06:02Nobody likes free hot dogs.
00:06:05I like free hot dogs.
00:06:11It's a tree.
00:06:13Just pick one and...
00:06:14Come on into the store.
00:06:16Come on.
00:06:20I don't get it.
00:06:21Route 12's flowing in traffic.
00:06:24Nobody shops for Christmas trees around here?
00:06:26We do.
00:06:27But mostly from local farms where you can pick your own tree.
00:06:30Like my friends at Robert's family,
00:06:31they own a farm three miles down the road
00:06:33and grow the trees right on property.
00:06:35You know, I've been going there ever since I was a kid.
00:06:38I can still remember the first time I helped my dad
00:06:40cut our very own Christmas tree.
00:06:41Cut?
00:06:42Like, with a saw?
00:06:44Yeah.
00:06:44Because that sounds incredibly old-fashioned.
00:06:46Why didn't you tell me about this before?
00:06:48About my childhoods?
00:06:50Well, the farm.
00:06:51Xavier.
00:06:52Oh, you didn't ask.
00:06:54Huh.
00:06:56This Robert's farm.
00:06:58It's not in the marketing research.
00:07:00All right.
00:07:02Where are you going?
00:07:06Well, people around here would rather buy their trees from some farm
00:07:09than enjoy the low-cost and convenience of a pre-cut tree.
00:07:12I need to know why.
00:07:13You need a hand?
00:07:26I love one.
00:07:39Thanks.
00:07:39Oh, nice looking tree.
00:07:43They all are here.
00:07:45Whoa.
00:07:46Nice comes with a price.
00:07:47Yeah.
00:07:47It's a once-a-year thing.
00:07:49Kids love it.
00:07:51I just wish I didn't have to haul it home.
00:07:54They don't deliver?
00:07:54It's a small farm.
00:07:56I guess they don't have the manpower.
00:07:58Hmm.
00:07:59Thanks again for the help.
00:08:00Have a happy holidays.
00:08:01You too.
00:08:03So, when you were born, your mom and dad planted a sapling in our grove.
00:08:09And guess what?
00:08:10What?
00:08:11Now that tree is all grown up, just like you, except it's grown into a big, beautiful Christmas tree.
00:08:18Isn't that cool?
00:08:19Yeah.
00:08:21Do you still have the slip number?
00:08:23I've been keeping it safe for eight years.
00:08:27Oh, okay.
00:08:30So, this one is five rows across and six rows back.
00:08:34And if you have any trouble finding it at all, come find me.
00:08:38Let's go.
00:08:39Yay.
00:08:40Have fun.
00:08:45Hmm.
00:08:46There you go.
00:08:47Enjoy.
00:08:49Oh, cider.
00:08:51Let me know if you need anything.
00:08:52Okay.
00:08:52Okay.
00:08:52Okay.
00:08:52Okay.
00:08:52Okay.
00:08:52Okay.
00:08:53Okay.
00:08:53Okay.
00:08:54Okay.
00:08:55Okay.
00:08:56Oh, my gosh.
00:09:26I am so sorry.
00:09:26Are you okay?
00:09:27I'm fine.
00:09:28Are you sure?
00:09:29I'm okay.
00:09:30Really.
00:09:31Okay.
00:09:31Aren't you supposed to yell timber when you chop down a tree?
00:09:33Nobody really does that.
00:09:35I wish I had known.
00:09:36But at least I can take assaulted by a Christmas tree off my bucket list now.
00:09:40Well, in that case, you're welcome.
00:09:43I'm Clay.
00:09:44Oh, um, Jessica.
00:09:47Oh, you have a little pine needle in your hair.
00:09:52Thanks.
00:09:53Thanks.
00:09:54So, I take it you're not from around here?
00:09:57Not even close.
00:09:58New York.
00:09:59This is New York.
00:10:01Sorry, I mean the city.
00:10:03Manhattan.
00:10:04Just checking out some local spots.
00:10:06Well, you have come to the right place, because this farm is the place in Hudson Springs during
00:10:12the holiday.
00:10:13I can see that.
00:10:19Excuse me, my boss.
00:10:20Sure.
00:10:24Clay, it's Marsha.
00:10:25I'm watching the video feed from the store, and it's not exactly bustling.
00:10:28Would you agree?
00:10:29A slow start, I know, but, uh, Hudson Springs is a bit old fashioned.
00:10:34I'll need a little more time to win people over.
00:10:37Jessica?
00:10:38Oh, we're having a little trouble finding our tree.
00:10:41Oh, sure.
00:10:42Um, let me, uh, let me just see your slip number here.
00:10:46Okay.
00:10:47Yeah.
00:10:48This way.
00:10:53Maybe our market research wasn't exactly accurate.
00:10:56I need you to do your own on-the-ground recon.
00:10:59Hang around supermarkets, barbershops, and town hall meetings.
00:11:03Find out what's making them hesitate.
00:11:05I'm already on it.
00:11:06That's what I like to hear.
00:11:17Hey.
00:11:28Better than free hot dogs, boss.
00:11:29A little marketing research goes a long way.
00:11:31Had a couple of college kids home for the holidays working for tips,
00:11:34and we have our army.
00:11:37You are a marketing maestro.
00:11:39I'm just getting warmed up.
00:11:40Uh, what's this?
00:11:42Second part of my plan.
00:11:43They're here to interview you.
00:11:45Uh, uh, me?
00:11:47I, I, I...
00:11:48You're the face of Hudson Springs' new HGS store, right?
00:11:50Yeah.
00:11:51A few talking points.
00:11:53Make sure you mention the free delivery, okay?
00:11:56Don't be nervous.
00:11:57You'll do great.
00:11:58Yeah, but...
00:11:59Excuse me a sec.
00:12:00Yeah.
00:12:01Clay.
00:12:02Yeah, how are ya?
00:12:03Thank you for coming.
00:12:04It's nice to meet you.
00:12:05Yeah.
00:12:06Free delivery.
00:12:07Free delivery.
00:12:08Free delivery.
00:12:09Free delivery.
00:12:10Free delivery.
00:12:11Mmm.
00:12:12Hey, how come Xavier didn't show?
00:12:13He never misses opening day.
00:12:14I don't know.
00:12:15He didn't text me back.
00:12:16Is he still looking for a job?
00:12:17We should just hire him, Scott.
00:12:18No, our payroll's stretched thin enough as it is.
00:12:19Hi.
00:12:20I am proud to be part of the Harvest Team here at the new location on Route 12.
00:12:22Xavier?
00:12:23We are bringing lots of local jobs and not to mention a wide selection of plants and gardening
00:12:42supplies.
00:12:43You have got to be kidding me.
00:12:45Oh no, no, not kidding.
00:12:47Xavier Norris, manager, Harvest Garden Supply says it right there on the TV.
00:12:51Yes, thank you.
00:12:52Yeah, for pointing that out.
00:12:54I can't believe he didn't tell me this.
00:12:56What a traitor.
00:12:57Come on, you can't blame the poor guy.
00:12:59I mean, he's been looking for a job for ages.
00:13:01For our grand opening, we are giving away free hot dogs and balloons for the kids.
00:13:06And not to mention, um, free deliveries for all of our Christmas trees.
00:13:12Okay, well I would have hired him if I knew he was just going to stab us in the back like this.
00:13:17Maybe listen to your big sis next time.
00:13:19So come on down and see for yourself what Harvest Garden Supplies is all about.
00:13:26You heard the man.
00:13:28Exciting stuff going on down here at Route 12.
00:13:30Why would City Hall let a super store like Harvest set up in Hudson Spring?
00:13:35It's the way of the world.
00:13:36Big chain stores are just popping up everywhere.
00:13:38Yeah, and putting mom and pop operations like ours out of business.
00:13:42Look, I'm sure there are plenty of customers to go around.
00:13:45How are you not more worried about this?
00:13:47A lot of our customers have to drive past that atrocity to get here.
00:13:51Look, our farm is special to people.
00:13:54We make memories.
00:13:55That matters.
00:13:56Our customers are not going to stop coming here just to save a few bucks.
00:14:00You're right.
00:14:04You know I'm right.
00:14:07She's a beauty.
00:14:08Enjoy her.
00:14:09Happy holidays.
00:14:10Are you noticing anything different today?
00:14:14Um, you shaved?
00:14:17Talking about the farm?
00:14:18It's not exactly bustling.
00:14:20So?
00:14:21It's a weekday.
00:14:22It's always slower on the weekdays.
00:14:23No, we had 25% more customers on the same weekday last year.
00:14:27Only difference now is Harvest Garden Supply is three miles down the road.
00:14:31And they sell trees too.
00:14:32I'm sure it is just a coincidence.
00:14:35Look, everybody knows we have the best trees.
00:14:38Period.
00:14:39Hey, let's go or we'll be late.
00:14:43If I know anything, it is Hudson Springs and Christmas trees.
00:14:46We'll be fine.
00:14:50We'll be fine.
00:14:53We'll now open the meeting up to public comments.
00:14:57Mayor Barnes, I thought this new big box store was supposed to fix everything.
00:15:01Now, we can't even afford Santa's Village?
00:15:05I mean, what am I supposed to tell my kids?
00:15:11Look, I am disappointed about Santa's Village too.
00:15:15This is just going to take time.
00:15:18HGS will bring people from all over our county,
00:15:21and those tax dollars are going to flow into the city.
00:15:25This time next year, we'll see us with an amazing Christmas spectacle
00:15:30like this town has never seen.
00:15:36We've got to say something.
00:15:38What do you mean, we?
00:15:40Mayor Barnes?
00:15:41Uh, Delaney?
00:15:43Watson?
00:15:44Hey.
00:15:45As you know, I work over at the Roberts Farm.
00:15:47Also, side note, my band Later Alligator plays every Tuesday night at Riley's.
00:15:50Would love to see you all there. Come check us out.
00:15:52Now, many of you know my best friend, Jessica.
00:16:03Now, she has something to say about this whole harvest garden cinch.
00:16:07I do?
00:16:08I do.
00:16:09I do.
00:16:10I do.
00:16:14Um...
00:16:16Mayor Barnes.
00:16:18I understand why council approved a superstore in Hudson Springs.
00:16:23I do.
00:16:24We need jobs.
00:16:26Especially now.
00:16:27But I think what Bob is trying to say is how important the spirit of Christmas is to the folks of Hudson Springs.
00:16:37People from our county and beyond visit us because of how special our community is.
00:16:44Our mom and pop businesses go above and beyond to make the holidays so magical.
00:16:51So, regardless of the bottom line, council has to support our community's holiday efforts.
00:16:58We have to ensure that our mom and pop businesses, our families, and our neighbors survive to next year.
00:17:06Yeah, and not superstores like HGS. Am I right?
00:17:10Yeah.
00:17:15Oh, sorry.
00:17:16Oh, it's you.
00:17:18Clay, right?
00:17:19I see you again, Jessica.
00:17:22The last cookie's yours.
00:17:24I couldn't.
00:17:25I insist.
00:17:26It's the least I can do for almost taking you out with the Christmas tree.
00:17:30I have a crazy idea.
00:17:33Timber.
00:17:37Eh? Eh?
00:17:41So, what brings you here?
00:17:42Work.
00:17:43I'm, uh, here for a while on a project.
00:17:46I'm at the town hall.
00:17:47Oh, uh, I wanted to get a feel for Hudson Springs.
00:17:50See who its movers and shakers are.
00:17:53Are these meetings always so lively?
00:17:57Almost never.
00:17:59I run my family's business, so I like to come to stay informed.
00:18:02Oh, yeah? What business is that?
00:18:04Jess, what do you think?
00:18:05Oh, hello there.
00:18:07Hi, I'm Clay.
00:18:09Delaney.
00:18:10Am I, uh, interrupting?
00:18:14Okay, what do you think about a county-wide boycott of Harvest?
00:18:17You know, power to the people's ticket to the man?
00:18:19Maybe if no one shops there, they'll just shut down and leave.
00:18:21Do those things actually work?
00:18:23Yeah, it does.
00:18:24Unless Harvest has enough funds to ride it out.
00:18:27Well, we're not spending a dime at that corporate atrocity.
00:18:29Am I right, you guys?
00:18:30Right?
00:18:31I should get going.
00:18:33It was nice running into you.
00:18:35Again.
00:18:36You too.
00:18:43Something you wanna tell me?
00:18:44No.
00:18:45You don't wanna share anything?
00:18:46Nope.
00:18:47Nothing just happened just now.
00:18:48I didn't see anything happen.
00:18:50Mm-hmm.
00:18:56She's gorgeous.
00:18:57This was one of the first trees my dad planted when he started this grove 30 years ago.
00:19:03In a way, putting it outside the train museum will be like a tribute to him.
00:19:07A wonderful idea.
00:19:09Folks around here sure miss him.
00:19:11Me too.
00:19:13Send me over an estimate that I can get approved.
00:19:16It's just a formality.
00:19:17Ah, that's a relief.
00:19:19With all the budget cuts lately I was worried.
00:19:21I am doing my best to keep a few of the town's traditions.
00:19:24The bean counters at City Hall know that it's just not the holidays without a tree from the Roberts Farm to light up our museum.
00:19:32I couldn't agree more.
00:19:34Thank you, Miss Mayor.
00:19:36Oh, here.
00:19:37Let me help you with those.
00:19:38Oh, thank you.
00:19:39That's very nice.
00:19:40No problem at all.
00:19:41Thank you for that.
00:19:42No problem at all.
00:19:43Yeah, my car's right here.
00:19:44So, I'm new in town.
00:19:45Is this the best market around here?
00:19:49Oh, well it should be.
00:19:50I've been coming here for 40 years.
00:19:51Really?
00:19:52Yeah.
00:19:53It seems a little pricey compared to the big and safe by the highway.
00:19:54That store is huge.
00:19:55I can't find a darn thing.
00:19:56Plus, everybody knows me here.
00:19:57Ah, it must be nice.
00:19:58Checkout clerk at my local market back home.
00:19:59Always acts like he's never seen me before.
00:20:00Where's home for you?
00:20:01New York City.
00:20:02I'm here till around Christmas for work.
00:20:03I don't know what to do.
00:20:04Any about the things that'soh?
00:20:05Can you help you?
00:20:06Can you help me?
00:20:07That's a great deal?
00:20:08Yes.
00:20:09So, your car's free.
00:20:10Oh, beautiful.
00:20:11Oh, I just wanna ask you.
00:20:12Oh, my car's a perfect car.
00:20:13Oh, it must be.
00:20:14Oh, I think so.
00:20:15No, I don't want to.
00:20:16I can't open it.
00:20:17I can't open it.
00:20:18Hey, let me know you can do it.
00:20:20And, I'll get it.
00:20:21Yeah.
00:20:22Oh, my car's on my car is today.
00:20:23home for you new york city i'm here till around christmas for work well alone in a new place at
00:20:30the holidays that can be easy that's the job well you seem too nice to be from the city we're having
00:20:37a little tree trimming and i'd love for you to join us that's very kind of you'd offer but i
00:20:43wouldn't want to impose oh small town hospitality honey you would not be imposing it would be fun
00:20:50to meet a real husband springs family well so come on over no just slip down the road and you can
00:20:55follow me in my car okay sure sounds good all right hey how come xavier didn't show uh because i didn't
00:21:07invite him what after what he did scott it's tradition yeah i'm home and i brought a new friend
00:21:21this young man was helping me with my groceries and we just started chatting and oh i didn't even
00:21:26get your name it's clay from manhattan oh you two know each other we met a couple times i think this
00:21:35makes the third right chess no what an amazing coincidence okay well just take these groceries
00:21:43and you just take them into the kitchen i can't remember the last time my whole family did something
00:21:53together like this even at the holidays used to but over the years everyone got so busy work and travel
00:22:00it's become impossible to get us all together oh that's a shame yeah it is how long you had the farm
00:22:12uh my grandfather bought this land 80 years ago and then my dad ran this place until he passed this
00:22:19spring i'm sorry thanks we are doing everything we can to try to keep this place running
00:22:24from what i saw the other day you're doing quite well we're getting by but you know family farms are
00:22:32a dying breed and each year seems to get harder than the last and now that horrible harvest super
00:22:36stores learn customers away using gimmicks like cheap trees and free delivery you don't offer free
00:22:42delivery seems like something people would want yeah but we'd have to hire more people maybe we should
00:22:49what uh what kind of business are you in clay meat yeah oh uh marketing uh finding ways to attract
00:22:58customers is my forte sounds like we should hire you yeah that's an excellent idea right
00:23:05i'm sure clay has more important things to do than help us out with our little farm honestly i wish i could
00:23:11but my plate's overloaded yes it is sounds to me like this is the first time you've ever faced some real
00:23:17competition yeah good news is people around here know and trust your brand so my advice would be to
00:23:23up your game and get creative yeah but how we don't have harvest deep pockets anyone can throw money at
00:23:28a problem but if you're creative you don't need to spend big bucks to get people to shop here
00:23:34you could be right feel free to bounce ideas off me anytime oh isn't that nice of you to offer
00:23:41isn't it jeff yes yes it is it's it's very nice thank you
00:23:50clay do you have your christmas tree yet
00:23:53uh i do not okay let's go please excuse my mom she is a little nosy but she means well
00:24:00she's so sweet and i envy the closeness you all have i've forgotten how nice being around family at the
00:24:06holidays can be well in case you hadn't noticed we love christmas me too but it's been a long time
00:24:12since i've really felt the holiday spirit well maybe this year will be different maybe
00:24:19so do you see a tree you like i probably shouldn't get one my hotel room's pretty cramped as it is
00:24:25oh come on what better way to get into the holiday spirit than a christmas tree in your room
00:24:30i think the fire marshal might disagree with you but uh okay that one ah a fine choice
00:24:40oh no no it's on the house i mean farm just consider it a thank you for all the business advice
00:24:47and for almost taking you out with that tree you sure yes just don't tell my brother
00:24:53i'll have it sent over tomorrow i thought you don't deliver as of tonight we do anything to
00:24:59compete right let me guess that'll be your delivery truck most likely yes ah my dad loved that truck
00:25:08he named it sheila after my grandma sheila i promised him i would take care of it and the farm
00:25:16this place means a lot to you yeah well all of my favorite memories growing up happened here
00:25:23especially the ones with my dad he taught me everything i know about farming and livestock
00:25:30and agriculture i am determined to keep this farm going
00:25:38so how are you liking hudson springs i haven't really had a chance to explore much yet but
00:25:45i like it so far i'm glad do you think maybe you could give me a
00:25:51locals tour the town sometime i mean if you're not too busy no i i suppose i could yeah i mean you're
00:25:59new to town you should see the town yeah uh friday night seven works for me perfect great
00:26:10thanks again for tonight of course
00:26:26so
00:26:36here's your tree delivered freely thanks to you till friday jessica
00:26:41jessica
00:26:49jessica roberts delivering a tree to a guy and giving him a tour i must say i'm impressed i'm just being
00:26:59welcoming he's new to town and he seemed kind and and smart oh okay okay he's cute too i i think it was
00:27:09sweet of him to give us that advice on how to compete with harvest so i am just showing him around
00:27:13town sure it's not a date or anything it is so it's not a date huge date not a day yeah jessica
00:27:18roberts seriously you do realize that her farm is our main competition of course i do now
00:27:27i honestly had no idea that was her farm until i walked into their house and there she was
00:27:32i mean what are the odds okay so what did she say when you told her you work at hgs
00:27:42oh no you didn't tell her i wanted to really i did but i was having such a good time getting to know
00:27:50her and her family i just couldn't find the right moment she's gonna be so mad or maybe she'll have
00:27:58such an amazing time on our date she'll see it's only business and not only him oh you're serious
00:28:08yeah no you don't know the roberts family like i do you have to tell her soon i know i will
00:28:19soon
00:28:19if it isn't benedict sherman um okay hi to you too would you be so kind sherman to explain exactly
00:28:32why you would do a puff piece on harvest brand opening instead of our town's local retailers yeah
00:28:38tipping the scales for a national chain is hardly fair we thought it'd be a good story a new retail
00:28:44business comes to hudson springs creating jobs at the holidays how many harvest gift cards do they
00:28:47bribe you with be honest none i swear well then that's great news right jess that is great news
00:28:58that means you can do a piece on our farm for free and what is the newsworthy angle
00:29:05a feel-good story about a local establishment that's been spreading holiday cheer for decades
00:29:09in the county unlike harvest you need to make this right sherman i doubt my producer will go for it
00:29:17i mean sherman sherman have you forgotten a certain favor i did for a certain classmate who couldn't
00:29:28get a date to senior prom well i'm cashing in that favor now or i can share your story on your social
00:29:35media okay okay okay yeah we'll make it happen today i will call my crew right now just put your phone
00:29:41away please
00:29:49were you bluffing did that look like a bluff i have no idea i am just glad you were on my team always
00:29:55there is no better way to kick off the hudson county holiday season than with a trip to the roberts family
00:30:00farm for a homegrown christmas tree this local treasure off route 12 sells beautiful christmas
00:30:05trees and has been providing the community with plants and garden supplies for three generations
00:30:10with me today is jessica roberts who runs the farm jessica why is this year's tree farm especially
00:30:16meaningful to you well sherman that is a great question my dad hal ran this farm for over 30 years
00:30:24he loved that our family farm was spreading holiday cheer all across the county one tree at a time
00:30:30christmas is a tradition around here and we need that in our community now more than ever right
00:30:34right she's good oh jessica's more than good she's great i love their farm as a kid i'm getting my tree
00:30:42there tomorrow what my dad always used to say we don't just sell trees we make memories and i feel the
00:30:51exact same way what a nice story oh and one more thing um i just think it's important for your uh
00:30:58viewers to know that small local businesses like our family farm are the lifeblood of our community
00:31:05we treat our customers like friends and neighbors because they are that new hgs it can't make the same
00:31:13claim do not fall for their gimmicks okay just called you out just come on down to our family farm
00:31:18and even if you don't mind anything you'll have fun oh and mention channel four and you'll get 10
00:31:22off in other news as the year comes to a close the mayor of hudson springs announced today
00:31:30her city faces severe budget cuts it's our responsibility to spend wisely on our community's
00:31:37top priorities unfortunately that means scaling back on some of our holiday traditions this year
00:31:42as you can see miss mayor we've hired over 30 sales associates so far all from hudson county yeah i
00:31:52mean i was looking for a job for over four months never thought i'd be a manager in hgs superstore
00:31:57well that's fantastic we could certainly use more taxpayers and shoppers around here
00:32:03saw that news story last night sounds grim well everyone needs to tighten their belts especially city
00:32:08home she isn't always easy at the holidays that's why we at harvest want to help follow me
00:32:16looks like the news story gave us the bump we needed at the right time
00:32:1910 days before christmas clay was right you can compete without much money jessica
00:32:27it's for you it's the mayor's office oh
00:32:33mayor barnes i was just about to call you when would you like the tree sent over
00:32:38well that's why i'm calling it's not going to work out this year i'm sorry what do you mean
00:32:45if it's the price we can work something out uh well another vendor donated a tree but i thought
00:32:51the tree we picked was perfect i'm sorry jessica we're just too cash strapped to turn it down
00:32:57please don't take it personally hopefully next year we'll have the funds to be able to buy from you again
00:33:01i hope so too okay bye bye
00:33:13don't look so glum it's friday night and you've got a hot date to get ready for it is not a date it's a tour
00:33:20sure whatever with a cute guy who likes you come on
00:33:24jessica roberts is going out finally hey i date sometimes just not as often as you hey at least

00:33:42a compliment out of my way okay nope nope definitely not wow uh oh wow this might just work
00:33:55honestly i know what to get you for christmas really that shirt trust me keep the jeans swap the top
00:34:01okay yeah okay

00:34:12thank you for the compliment i mean
00:34:18before we go there's there's something you should know and truth comes out you have a girlfriend
00:34:26what no a wife no poor kids what i wanted to tell you is
00:34:36i'm not a fan of eggnog i mean some people love it you might be one of them nothing wrong with that i
00:34:40just i wanted to put it out there from the start thank you thank you for your honesty great can we go
00:34:46now clay from minhattan yeah
00:34:55every moment of every day is an opportunity to convert to convince to sell
00:35:01or that one of my business podcasts no no leave it on i want to hear it
00:35:08every person you meet is a possible buyer maybe not today or tomorrow but someday your contacts are
00:35:16your current this guy can't be serious
00:35:19everyone's buying or selling something even if they don't know it
00:35:21i don't know reducing everything to a transaction what about being a good person giving back to the
00:35:29community you can be successful in business and be a good person you're proof of that thanks
00:35:35i'd like to think so as for me i'm trying to make every day a win for the company but i'm also
00:35:40trying to contribute to the community here so that everybody benefits i can send you these podcasts if
00:35:45you want to stream some i actually prefer the clay cast okay you love what you do it's cute
00:35:58okay so pick your tour uh you could have the official hudson springs tour featuring uh historical
00:36:04landmarks takes all of about three minutes or you can have the official jessica roberts tour featuring
00:36:09jessica roberts landmarks you pick um the latter definitely excellent choice excellent choice
00:36:18my first date that was brandon marks he took me to the train museum christmas light up oh i was 16
00:36:28it was great except for the fact that his parents came and stood behind us the entire time awkward
00:36:33yeah your mom's not following this is she no not likely it's a nice tradition a tradition where
00:36:43for the first time in decades we will not be using a tree from the roberts family farm oh yeah someone
00:36:49donated a tree so the city doesn't need to buy it from us you can't blame them for taking a free tree
00:36:55oh i know i just hope to use the first tree my dad ever planted in the grove
00:36:59oh it would have been such a nice tribute to him seeing it all lit up the center of the community
00:37:05he loves so much so sorry that didn't work out me too good evening clay yes how you doing fellas
00:37:19you've been here a week and you already know earl and felix hard not to their friendship's expensive
00:37:24but i like those guys can i ask you something yeah how is it you're still single i think every guy
00:37:34in hunting springs would be after you oh well i don't know about that um i don't know i guess my
00:37:41family and the farm have just always come first especially when my dad needed help managing everything
00:37:46i was happy to be here for him it sounds like you sacrificed a lot didn't feel like a sacrifice
00:37:51what about you no big apple lady snapped you up yet not yet uh i come from a family of workaholics
00:38:03when we were kids my dad sat us all down and said kids money isn't everything it's the only thing
00:38:11so working hard and climbing the corporate ladder has always been the priority
00:38:15long hours traveling lots for work and an apartment i barely use except to sleep
00:38:22you sound like a lot of fun it's a big city way of life
00:38:27so i guess hudson springs must feel like such a culture shock to you at first slowing down a little
00:38:32has been good for me i'm seeing things i didn't realize i was missing fresh air trees
00:38:39these conversations with a strong smart beautiful woman
00:38:49i bet you say that to all the farm girls are you hungry yes let's eat okay
00:39:00hi jessica how you doing clay wait you're a regular already i've seen him every morning this week
00:39:07at most nights wow and here i was thinking i was taking you someplace you've never been
00:39:12sorry you just seem so excited to show me truth is i'm hooked on her coffee i might even have to
00:39:17have it shipped to new york i mean manhattan why don't you two grab a seat i'll bring you a couple
00:39:25glasses of wine on the house wow even dotty likes you
00:39:34i'd like to make a toast to that tree that almost knocked me down if it hadn't
00:39:43we may never admit to the tree and my negligence
00:39:51by the way i saw you on tv the other night oh no you did what you have a real screen presence oh really
00:39:59i was so nervous i mean i did get the message out and the free press definitely helped but
00:40:04we still need to up our game now there's a site sherman hi this is clay clay oh i know clay
00:40:12in fact we did a story together just last week oh wait is there anybody in this town you don't know
00:40:18it's good to see you sherman this meatloaf is delicious wow um it is really good to see you two
00:40:31rivals in peace talks enjoy your dinner okay thank you peace talks i didn't know we were at war
00:40:40so what was the story he did oh it was nothing oh come on tell me maybe i saw it clay
00:40:58promise you won't get mad why would i get mad
00:41:01okay he did a story for me about
00:41:12harvest garden supply what wait wait i wanted to tell you before but it just didn't seem like a good
00:41:20time and uh you work for harvest i'm a regional marketing director they send me in to launch certain
00:41:30stores you're funny that's a really funny really bad joke i mean you and sherman know each other
00:41:39somehow please tell me you're kidding i'm sorry you're sorry why didn't you tell me i wanted to
00:41:52really i did but you and scott and especially your friend delaney hate harvest and i thought that if i
00:41:59told you the truth and you would never even give me a chance so you just omitted a pretty key part of
00:42:07yourself i just wanted to get to know you what for what so you could size up your competition
00:42:15what figure out our weaknesses so you could lure our customers away and beat us
00:42:22wow no that of course not you seemed kind and funny and smart let me get there i knew it was too good to be
00:42:36true
00:42:52i can't believe this guy i mean in our own house acting so polite and and giving us business advice
00:43:00that guy's got some nerve i just wish she would have told me exactly instead of going on a date
00:43:06with you when he knew that it was our farm that he was stealing business from
00:43:14mom and i we could tell that you were excited about him we're always hoping that you're gonna be a
00:43:20great guy thanks me too i swear if if i see clay i'm gonna you will do nothing scott let's just focus
00:43:31on what we have to do just like every year
00:43:41see i told you she'd be mad it's not so much what she said but
00:43:45how she looked at me like i betrayed her i felt terrible keeping the truth from her
00:43:53still do so what are you gonna do i don't know can't change how she feels about harvest
00:44:01hopefully i can change how she feels about me
00:44:15it's not even a northeastern fur won't last two weeks
00:44:34find what you're looking for uh no thank you i'm just browsing i'm sorry about the other night
00:44:45you have every right to be upset i should have told you the truth sooner but i didn't
00:44:51because i wanted you to like me for who i am instead of prejudging me for who i work for
00:44:54the death star you may
00:44:57did you know that harvest started out as a small family farm just like yours
00:45:01wilbur anderson the founder opened a small produce stand on a country road and grew from there
00:45:06he had those same small town values that people around here share
00:45:09it's part of what appealed to me about the job building on his underdog story and turning new
00:45:16customers and fans of the brand that is a fan club i want no part of you have every right to be
00:45:22saint nicole but the competition between harvest and your farm that's business this between us
00:45:31it's personal well it all feels the same to me i'm not trying to put you out of business i'm just
00:45:41trying to get people to shop at this store so we're competing big deal embrace the challenge and push
00:45:46yourself to win hmm you sound like your podcasts and i don't need your patronizing advice if you want
00:45:54to help us out stop selling trees i can't do that i put a lot of my budget into that tree lot brings
00:46:01people into the store that's my job selling low-grade trees and foreign-made gardening supplies how noble
00:46:09our customers love our wide selection and low low prices look i didn't come here to debate the
00:46:14flimsy merits of the hgs business model i'm here to see what i'm up against so we can beat hgs
00:46:21and you i'll have to warn you i'm not one to lose but i wish you the best of luck anyway well you too
00:46:31that's a nice shirt very very good color on you oh i think it's lilac
00:46:38manager oh you've been working so hard to find a job being there for your family
00:46:53i'm so proud of you thanks annie but uh scott sure isn't think liver forgive me
00:46:59oh savior honey scott is navigating a whole new landscape of responsibilities at the farm now that
00:47:08dad is gone and you are doing what is right for you and your future we're family oh you and scott
00:47:17you're gonna find your way just have a little patience thanks
00:47:19a concert yeah delaney's band is playing to raise money for sprucing up the train museum
00:47:31jessica thought it'd be good pr for our farm well as part of this family i would love to hang some
00:47:35up in the store oh well that's great honey thank you thanks for the chat annie anytime say hello to
00:47:44your mother oh we will who was that your best friend savior
00:47:54our the herald angels sing glory to the newborn king
00:48:15all right everyone let's hear it for hudson springs very own senior singer society
00:48:24now i would like to thank claymore and xavier norris from harvest garden supply for donating this
00:48:30tree to the annual hudson spring tree lighting ceremony and for throwing in the free delivery
00:48:39christmas just wouldn't be the same without your incredible generosity thank you thank you mayor
00:48:48it's our pleasure to help out such a wonderful community in a small way
00:48:52i know we at harvest are new to town but so many of you have already stopped by the store and just

00:50:09to spruce up the trade museum it's looking a little rundown tree is nice but we wanted to do something
00:50:15lasting concert's a smart idea he says sarcastically no i mean it we get some new people walking around
00:50:23farm exposure and doing good for the town it's a win-win so am i allowed to come to this it's a free
00:50:32country but if you do bring cash lots of it

01:04:40workaholism can be contagious it's okay now competing with you has forced me to hustle which has been
01:04:48challenging but also fun well you're exceptional at it being supremely mad at you is a great motivator
01:04:57so you're uh you're not mad anymore i guess i realize all that stuff between us

01:07:01hey mom said you want to talk to me yeah it's um it's about the books
01:07:07well don't look so glum our sales have never been better but our expenses have never been higher
01:07:12we had to hire more staff plus santa plus all the materials to build and paint everything
01:07:17overtime it all adds up and unfortunately no matter how well we do in these next two days before
01:07:23christmas we're still going to be in the red but i sold dad's truck and that helped but it wasn't
01:07:31enough well we'll have a sale we'll put the wreaths and poinsettias half off oh people love that
01:07:36they'll they'll go crazy i think that we need to talk about selling the farm
01:07:43scott if we prepare it now we can have it on the market in time for spring there has to be another
01:07:48way and we could get another loan from the bank call mrs steingart i i i called her already and she
01:07:54said no i'm sorry i really am i've seen what you've managed to do here we all have
01:08:04and it was an incredibly valiant effort but at some point we have to face reality
01:08:14look i know that this is home for you but maybe this is a chance for something new
01:08:21did you ever think maybe the farm was holding you back from having your own life
01:08:24i like my life here i know there's this whole world out there to explore beyond this farm and
01:08:33beyond hudson springs what would dad say if he heard you talking like that dad is gone jess
01:08:43we have to do what's right for us now not him
01:08:50i'm sorry jess
01:09:02have a good night there he is marcia what are you doing here
01:09:18waiting to celebrate with you i wanted to come up and personally thank you for killing it with a

01:09:52oh can we help you
01:09:53uh excuse me i didn't mean to interrupt your celebration
01:09:58jessica
01:09:59no need to explain you won we're selling the farm why
01:10:10enjoy your night clay
01:10:17what was that about
01:10:20rather not talk about it fair enough you must be dying to get back to the city
01:10:25actually marcia uh hudson springs has grown on me especially the people really well i'm sure i
01:10:35don't need to remind you that we answer to the board at hgs first and foremost don't forget that
01:10:41what would wilbert anderson say if he heard you right now excuse me wilbert anderson was a lot
01:10:48like the people around here respected his customers i wonder if hgs has forgotten that
01:10:55what's so funny well the way you were talking i actually started to believe that wilbert anderson was
01:11:03real what do you mean oh no you don't know oh wilbert anderson never existed he was created by art
01:11:16freeberg a brilliant ad copy guy back in the 70s he made the whole thing up as a sales tactic
01:11:22i thought you knew well that just goes to show you you can sell ice to alaskans if you tell them
01:11:31the right story be back at the office tomorrow on christmas eve yes i want to get you up to speed
01:11:40on your new role before the new year
01:11:50a day ago i was on top of the world
01:11:54and in a flash i am losing the farm and the first guy i saw a future with
01:12:02some christmas eve you don't know that for sure there's still time right i'm talking about the farm or
01:12:08the guy maybe both just talk to him no hey jessica it's me clay uh i would really like to talk to you
01:12:26i know you're upset but hopefully you'll call me back
01:12:29bye
01:12:40listen to his voicemail maybe he's i don't get it you were the one who forbade me from dating him
01:12:46i know and i didn't want to like clay but he clearly adores you and i doubt he'd ever want
01:12:52to hurt you or put your farm out of business he baited me into competing with him knowing he would
01:12:57win all along no stop if you're gonna blame him blame yourself too because win or lose you loved
01:13:02playing the game and it could have gotten ugly between you two but it didn't because you liked
01:13:07each other too much and maybe you'll lose the farm but are you really ready to lose him too jessica
01:13:16roberts you deserve someone exceptional i don't know if that's clay but you owe it to yourself to find
01:13:25out so talk to him one more time then decide
01:13:34hey you wanted to see me boss i wanted to wish you good luck with the store
01:13:39my time's up here wow already we built up local awareness now it's up to you to maintain the hds brand
01:13:47in the area put together a checklist of all the quarterly marketing must-dos
01:13:57it's been great working with you xavier yeah uh you too i mean you've taught me so much it's been an honor
01:14:08there being peace
01:14:12merry christmas you too
01:14:38The select few who make it to the top know that winning is everything.
01:14:44Every day is a test of your will to compete.
01:14:47Because if you aren't willing to do whatever it takes to win...
01:15:08You okay?
01:15:38Not really.
01:15:41I promised Dad I would take care of this place.
01:15:46If we sell, I'll always feel like I let him down.
01:15:53Not really a comedy moment, Mom.
01:15:56I know. It's just...
01:15:59I heard the same thing many times from your father.
01:16:03Why?
01:16:04He didn't want to let you down.
01:16:06Me?
01:16:07Yeah.
01:16:08He knew how much he cared about this place.
01:16:12So he put his heart and soul into it until his very last day.
01:16:17Bless his heart.
01:16:19I miss him so much.
01:16:22Yeah.
01:16:26Me too.
01:16:29And I know how proud he'd be of what you've managed to do here.
01:16:35Just like I am. I mean, you've done an incredible job.
01:16:38Thanks, Mom.
01:16:39Whatever happens to the farm, I just want you to be happy and to follow your heart wherever it takes you.
01:16:50Call that boy.
01:16:54See what's possible in the next chapter of your life.
01:16:59Because you know what?
01:17:00Ready or not, it's coming.
01:17:03I hate when you're right.
01:17:04I know.
01:17:05It's Clay. Leave a message.
01:17:06Hi, Clay. It's Jessica. I'm sure you're back at work already.
01:17:10Congratulations on your promotion.
01:17:11I didn't mean what I said yesterday.
01:17:12I really am happy for you, truly. You deserve it.
01:17:17Anyway, I was hoping we could talk. So please give me a call when you have a chance. Bye.
01:17:47Excuse me. Oh, hi. Sorry, we just closed.
01:18:08Oh, it's okay. Um, we're not here for a tree.
01:18:11Oh, are you lost?
01:18:13No, um, we're engaged.
01:18:15Oh, well, um, congratulations.
01:18:20We're headed upstate to see some relatives, and along the way we're looking at wedding venues.
01:18:24Everything in the city is so typical.
01:18:26And expensive.
01:18:28Hmm. I'm sorry to hear that. But why are you telling me all of this?
01:18:33We were here this morning, and this farm, it's...
01:18:35Exactly what we're looking for. Do you think the owner would ever rent that bar note for a wedding?
01:18:40I think they would.
01:18:46If you can put us in touch, that'd be awesome.
01:18:49Great news. You already are.
01:18:52All night divine.
01:19:05All night divine.
01:19:07All night divine.
01:19:11Okay, okay, I'll talk to him.
01:19:20Hey.
01:19:21Hey.
01:19:22Hey.
01:19:23Hey.
01:19:24Look, I'm sorry I didn't tell you about the whole harvest job thing.
01:19:30I figured if I did, you'd try to talk me out of it.
01:19:32I mean, you're right about that.
01:19:35But I know that you needed a job, so...
01:19:39It's cool.
01:19:41Really?
01:19:42Yeah.
01:19:43Really.
01:19:44Hi.
01:19:45Hi.
01:19:46Hi.
01:19:51You okay?
01:19:52Not yet.
01:19:53But I did find a way to save the farm.
01:19:56Really?
01:19:57Really.
01:19:58Well, I'm not surprised, my amazing boss lady.
01:20:02I guess it's Merry Christmas after all.
01:20:04First Christmas without Dad.
01:20:11So good to have all my kiddos together.
01:20:14Aw, Mom.
01:20:15Family is everything.
01:20:17Thanks, Mom.
01:20:18We love you too.
01:20:19Aw.
01:20:24Good morning.
01:20:25Good morning.
01:20:34Good morning.
01:20:55Hello?
01:20:59Is somebody here?
01:21:00It's just me.
01:21:08What are you doing here?
01:21:10Waiting for you.
01:21:12To be honest, I thought you'd be home sooner.
01:21:13It's freezing out here.
01:21:16My dad's truck.
01:21:19Merry Christmas.
01:21:23I-I-I don't understand.
01:21:27That truck meant so much to your dad and to you.
01:21:31I was on my way out of town and...
01:21:34I realized I couldn't go without convincing you not to sell this place.
01:21:37Clay.
01:21:38It means too much to you and to your family and to this community.
01:21:41And if there's anything I can do to help get it back on track-
01:21:43Clay.
01:21:46We're not selling the farm.
01:21:49Oh.
01:21:50Okay.
01:21:51Good.
01:21:52Competing with you made me realize what I'm capable of.
01:21:58This farm is going to be a venue for so much more than it's ever been.
01:22:04We're gonna have summer movie nights and Easter egg hunts and Fourth of July carnivals.
01:22:10Halloween pumpkin patch.
01:22:11A Halloween pumpkin patch?
01:22:13And the best part?
01:22:15Weddings.
01:22:17Brilliant.
01:22:18Yeah?
01:22:20I wanna help.
01:22:22I'm not taking that promotion.
01:22:24In fact, I'm not going back to Harvest.
01:22:26I'm tired of peddling lies just so I can climb to the top of some corporate ladder.
01:22:31Are you sure?
01:22:32Cause your podcast would say that's a huge mistake.
01:22:37You know, they say New York City is the center of the world.
01:22:41Where anything's possible.
01:22:43But in all my years living there,
01:22:46I never felt anything but the need to hustle.
01:22:48Do whatever it takes to win.
01:22:51Even though it's only been a few weeks.
01:22:54The only place I've ever felt a sense of real possibility.
01:22:57A life with family and friends and real home.
01:23:03It's right here.
01:23:05Hudson Springs.
01:23:08With you.
01:23:10Are you sure you wanna live in Hudson Springs?
01:23:14That's where you are.
