Terminally-ill dad named in King’s Birthday Honours List

Paul Dennington, from Hempstead, Gillingham, has received a British Empire Medal (BEM) for his fundraising for a prostate cancer charity.

00:00Well, I got a bit of a shock. I got a letter through the post to first advise and I had no

00:05idea it was coming, obviously. So it was a bit surreal, I must admit. I was hoping this year

00:13was going to be a big year for me in terms of fundraising and awareness, driving and creating

00:17memories. But well, boy, this surpassed any kind of expectation I might have had. I mean,

00:23yeah, it was truly awesome. I was, I think I probably, I don't cry very often, but I think

00:29I may have shed a little emotional tear actually at the time as well, because I was a bit

00:34overwhelmed. But yeah, it was amazing. It's very hard to put into words because it's not

00:38something I've ever set out to achieve. I set out to try and raise awareness and funds linked

00:45to prostate cancer in the hope that I could stop other men and their families going through

00:50the same journey that we're going through. And that was always the aim. So to get recognised

00:56for that, I don't know, because I'm just doing what I really want to do anyway, and

01:03just hoping to make a difference. But yes, it does feel very special. But it's down to

01:10a lot of, it's also down to the help of a lot of other people as well. So I guess I always,

01:15I'm kind of the focal point, but there's always a lot of people helping.
