00:00When I asked Padma, what is it that you want me to address, she said, tell your story.
00:08So today, I am happy to share my small story with a few insights on what a company should be like.
00:19I hail from a small place called Chittur.
00:24My father is a veterinary doctor.
00:26He studied in Mumbai, and I went to this school called Little Flower.
00:31Most of us would have gone to Little Flower Convents, and after my sixth grade, you know,
00:37my father put me in Chennai because being an educated man in those days, he realized the value of knowledge.
00:44And that's how I studied in Kalakshetra in Chennai, and then I went on to SIT and Etiraj College.
00:51Those of you who know Chennai would know these institutions, very premier institutions even till date.
00:59And I did my master's in business management from PSG College of Technology.
01:03And my father had this hatchery business, and I always grew up, because being two sisters,
01:12I always grew up to believe that I will be managing my dad's business.
01:17And as a child, you know, my office and home were together.
01:21So I was very comfortable having, you know, office people moving in and out of the house.
01:26So it was not intimidating for me that way.
01:30And once I finished my college and returned and started working with my dad,
01:36then came this proposal, very well-settled, very well-reputed family, the Inadu Ramoji family.
01:45And Mr. Kiran and my father-in-law, they visited us, and they saw me.
01:54And when I spoke to Kiran, I made it very clear to him that I would want to be a career woman.
02:01I said, I can't just remain as a housewife, you know, because I grew up with the intention
02:07that I will be running a business.
02:09So that was a very clear deal with Kiran Garu.
02:13So anyway, luckily for them also, Moai Garu, being a very, very broad-minded person,
02:19treated us like daughters till the end.
02:23He gave us ample opportunity, freedom to work.
02:28And that's how I was married to Kiran Garu and moved to Hyderabad.
02:32Having said that, finance was never my cup of tea.
02:39But the other businesses were taken up by the family members,
02:44and I had the option to manage Martha's Hitchit Fund,
02:47which was a small business then, but still about 14 branches.
02:52My father-in-law wanted me to manage that.
02:55And I feared that if I reject that, I'll have to stay put at home,
02:59and I agreed to run that business.
03:02Why I always mention this is that every time,
03:05you may not get to do what you want to do,
03:08but definitely you can like what you're doing
03:13if you develop the interest to do things, you know.
03:17Yeah.
03:20So, one thing he told me is that I was 24 years old then, 1990,
03:29and this company was 28 years old.
03:33So, the day I decided to go to office, he said,
03:35Shailaja, the people working in this company
03:40are working for 28 years now.
03:44That means they're older, their work life is older than your age.
03:48So, naturally, they're not going to change for you.
03:53So, you bear this in mind that you have to work with elderly people.
03:57And that was a very great advice.
04:00Because I remembered that I had to really, what do I say,
04:07you can't take chances with senior colleagues.
04:13So, yes, they taught me everything.
04:19And much later on, you know, they would start taking my instructions.
04:25Once you know the business and you know the way forward,
04:29everybody will come around.
