00:00The garden rescue team are on a mission to make garden dreams come true Charlie
00:11Dimock Lee Burkill Flo Headlem and Chris Hull are here to answer your gardening
00:27emergencies feels disorganized a bit chaotic it's a bit of a shocker each week
00:32two of our designers will go head-to-head pick me and let's do this the garden
00:37we're gonna go with is and whichever designer loses the race is on helps the
00:50winner build the garden good idea did you get that on camera they said good idea
00:55Charlie amazing turning garden dreams open your eyes that's all the world into reality
01:03today the team tackle a garden in Manchester because Elizabeth and James are looking for
01:21inspiration we went to Devon and we packed our surfboards on top of the tiny IQ it's still
01:28going strong isn't it so we met actually on the first day of uni we went to the University of
01:34Birmingham together and we studied civil engineering and yeah we sat next to each other in the first
01:39lecture together and I think that was around 10 years ago now yeah yeah so we've been we've sort
01:45of gone traveling around the world gone uni together we've been started our careers together bought a
01:51house together outdoorsy Elizabeth originally from London and James from Bristol moved to Manchester
01:58three years ago in our spare time we like to do hikes in the Peak District it's just on our doorstep and
02:04if we want something a bit further afield the Lake District is also gorgeous we really like going to
02:08the beach and surfing with friends and family and then this is us the last time we went isn't it yeah a
02:15few months ago that one yeah we do love Manchester but yeah it's something nice about being by the beach
02:21the couple have worked hard to make themselves a home in Manchester we had to redo everything so we took
02:27out a structural wall put in new steels every wall in this house has been stripped of the wallpaper
02:34including the ceilings but one part of the house they haven't renovated is their 90 square meter garden
02:41so over here is where the garage slash shed used to be so now that we've taken away the garage we've been
02:51left with essentially uneven barren ground there was also a greenhouse that was right next to the garage
02:57uh it was so overgrown with ivy you couldn't physically open the greenhouse doors and behind
03:02that we had a landfill site that we delightfully discovered after we've removed the greenhouse yeah
03:08and the shed there was a skips worth of random stuff petrol tires anything you can think of was back
03:15there so that wasn't the best surprise that we had so it's been a huge job to to clear things out
03:20of the way yeah as we venture back to the depths of the garden there's loads of stuff on the floor
03:29here there's some glass there's rubbish it's just such a big job to to get rid of it all it is a very
03:36mature garden and we see often like we can even see today there's lots of bees buzzing about in the
03:41plants we see birds pottering about squirrels we've even had some foxes passing through in the past but
03:48even for them a lot of the stuff that's on the floor now isn't safe on this side there's so much
03:55ivy that's very much untamed and then you've got all of the weeds and undergrowth there there's like
04:02a dead tree stump in the garden which would be so nice to get rid of it's actually growing into the
04:08garage and causing a bit of structural issues and it's a bit of an eyesore so we can't wait to see rid
04:13of that as well i don't think either of us are particularly green fingers so it's easier for
04:19us to sort of place things in our house but outside is quite a different ball game i suppose we've we've
04:25put in so much work into doing the rest of the house and looking out just makes you go oh
04:29happy to help charlie and lee are ready to design james and elizabeth's new plot
04:39right here we have james and elizabeth in manchester right check this out oh full of
04:47greenery ivy wonky donkey grass if you've got a nice view from the house but then they're just
04:51looking out over this kind of scrubland i wonder what they want though yeah should we find out
04:56probably not scrubland we want to bring the beach to manchester we love surfing and being near the
05:04sea and just being in nature so if we could have that in our garden that would be perfect for us
05:08a beach in manchester that's gonna be difficult the garden needs to be more surf atmosphere than surf
05:17shack and sand it's a nice sheltered area we can gather around with our friends and family
05:22maybe around a fire pit as a big improvement to where our garage used to be so basically not
05:27manchester there far far away near the coast yeah beth loves to read so maybe a quiet calming nook
05:34in the corner to do this would be brilliant oh you're known for those little hideaway nooks little
05:38hidey hole we've noticed lots of wildlife in our overgrown garden we'd love to have something that
05:43keeps them here and makes them enjoy it right so we don't want to strip out too much because of
05:48the wildlife right so what's the budget well the budget for this one is six thousand pounds six
05:54thousand pounds well that's not bad but it's a big garden a lot to do
06:03lee and charlie must create a design that fits james and elizabeth's six thousand pound budget
06:10james and elizabeth must pick their favorite which the losing designer will help build
06:15the designers and top team of landscapers provide the labor for free leaving the entire budget to
06:21spend on materials and plants
06:28back in manchester the designers pitches are in let's go for it james and elizabeth this is my surf
06:37inspired sunset hideaway for you wouldn't be much of a surf style garden if we didn't have a really
06:43wonderful beachy area so what i've done is take half of the garden after the patio and create this
06:50really relaxed almost like evening beach scene that's so clever what you've done there i really
06:56like that i've given you this rustic surf shack seating area at harbour where you can hide away
07:02from neighbours the sun or the rain and fit loads of family members here it does take me to the beach
07:07that it wouldn't really be a beach scene garden without some water which is why i've given you
07:13this really tall stone monolith that's going to gush with water and trickle down into this boulder
07:19pebble pool now that is really cool so you come out the patio doors to your existing patio and then
07:26we've got these two perglars now when i say perglars they're sort of arches come pergola but very modern
07:34so they actually frame the view one straight down the garden to the chillax zone and then this other
07:43pergola into the the party zone as such a lovely big patio surrounded by planting it feels really open
07:53but also quite quite zone yeah now elizabeth i know you wanted a nook where you could hide away
07:59and get back to basics with nature so what i've done in the back part of the garden is keep all of
08:04your existing plants and trees but simply add to them and i've done that by giving you a new curved lawn
08:10here and this perfect little seating area but by using these big bleached out pieces of driftwood
08:16we're going to give that illusion that you're near the sea but in nature i love how it's sort of the curve
08:22going around all of the trees that's so it looks like such a relaxing area doesn't it going to be
08:26these stepping stones that lead you down through the meadow very simple pond and then i've got this
08:34deck area that's going to be set about a foot above the pond and hang over so you can lay down on it
08:41and look into the pond you can sit on the edge and dangle your feet we're gonna plant this area up with
08:50wildlife plants so we're going to have meadow turf so it's going to be full of oxide daisies and campions
08:57it's going to have a little solar pump in there so that you've got the sound of the water bubbling
09:04you'll get the reflections so it'll just be a really nice area just to chill i love the water
09:10feature as well that we've got something there that has that element charlie and lee's designs are
09:16very different but both deliver when it comes to social and chill out spaces
09:22but james and elizabeth also wanted to create a haven for wildlife as we move through this part of the
09:28garden i want to make use of all of that wildlife and existing planting that you have underneath this
09:33whole section i'm going to fill this part of the garden with low frost woodland planting evergreen
09:39luscular grasses we're going to have galliums we're going to have maybe some wood primrose all sorts of
09:44things that will just do their own thing without loads of intervention oh that sounds so gorgeous and
09:50the bottom of the garden is surrounded with shrubs and trees i'm thinking something native things like
09:59field maple hawthorn a silver birch which is going to be great for the wildlife for the birds so you
10:07get the flowers in the spring you get the berries in the autumn and you get autumn color yes it'll be
10:13really nice so any time of the year this area of the garden is going to be very interesting
10:20but also fantastic for the wildlife i'm glad we're not losing any of the wildlife that could be
10:26sort of a haven for all charlie's thinking of the birds as well which is nice so this is my
10:30design it's very simple straightforward easy to maintain practical for you guys so you can chill
10:38out there along with all the wildlife i'm glad that she's considered that we're not going to be
10:44particularly good at taking care of the plants but hopefully they'll survive
10:48so if you want to grab a drink as the sunsets then pick my sunset hideaway oh i'm just so pleased that
10:55they both look so good the only problem is now we're gonna have to choose do you think we could
10:59try and do both maybe
11:06james and elizabeth must decide the design they desire the most right so back here in charlie's design is
11:14pretty much where the pond is at this point and the decking is kind of she said a foot above where
11:18the pond is so we can almost stretch our legs out and dangle our feet into the pond or just sort of
11:23have them there and even from this position that we are now it's just going to look stunning with the
11:28planting growing around it so for lee's design this is pretty much where the nook is yeah this is going
11:35to just completely transform won't it because it's like the circular hangout area with the driftwood all
11:41around it rather than overgrown mess but it is at the moment i don't think that's actually made the
11:46decision any easier uh going around it because i can really imagine us enjoying both of these spaces
11:56here we go we've heard back from james and elizabeth about which one of our beachy designs they want
12:01okay hi lee and charlie thank you so much for our designs they were both so amazing lee we loved the
12:09water feature at the beginning of the garden that's my department the patio area and then
12:14the little nook that you made at the back of the garden just for me it was so thoughtful
12:20and charlie your design was fantastic as well we really loved the two pagodas and how they frame
12:25the view out of our kitchen and from the bi-fold doors oh they're framing we lost a lot of sleep over
12:32it and to be honest if we could have both we would love to have both but we couldn't and we had to
12:37choose someone so we chose charlie oh well you could knock me down with a fervor
12:49i can't believe that with your lovely shed well you never know how much beach someone wants
12:54i know because i didn't really have much beach
13:05project manager ben and an expert team of landscapers have just two days to bring coastal vibes to
13:10manchester big big job you've just walked in to the bomb site you can see we have a lot to do here
13:21behind tori was a greenhouse pretty much most of it's still on the floor by the looks of it in
13:26fragments yeah we got to get the digger in and strip this all out we have to make it look like this
13:33candy needs get his digger in and get digging you've got a lot to do andy yeah on that digger
13:37rest of us cup of tea let's get it done yeah get that digger in andy i'm a bit hooked up
13:43first andy's on the digger and the team are clearing barrows worth of rubble and soil
14:03you can see straight away the skip is filling up really quickly i don't think we've even scratched
14:08the surface so we're going to look into getting another skip because we've got to get a lot out
14:13before we bring all the new stuff in yeah that's still got a bit of life in it merry christmas oh
14:19look at that from old christmas trees to buried bricks there's lots to lose to make way for a level
14:26lawn and patio area i think we've found the old greenhouse base lots of bricks and glass is a common sign
14:35thing after three hours of clearing andy's digger can refocus to create a 400 millimeter deep hole
14:46at the back of the garden for charlie's wildlife pond this pond's getting bigger and bigger
14:56more than big enough yeah you have dolphins and everything in this side of this charlie's plan is
15:02to create a retreat with a platform that partly sits over the pond that lee the carpenter will build
15:10ah i bet we'll make a frame then big frame so i've just had a change of mind about this
15:16it's got to be a long thin oval deck what i'll do i'll make this centerpiece first and i'll create these
15:24two a frames because it's a long thin oval it'll still keep that that surfboard style look to it
15:35while lee builds the frame for the beachy inspired platform andy and ben are ready to lay tiles close
15:41to the garden's entrance i'm going to work away all the way along let's create the rectangle patio area
15:48the patio area will gradually connect to the wildlife area at the back of the garden with pond and the
15:57platform at its heart so we're going to try and position this i've got jamie digging some of that
16:05soil back there then we'll slide it up into position then we can work out where the legs are going andy's
16:11got a digger i've got a digger it's brilliant mine is what you have to feed it that's the trouble lee and
16:17jamie must make sure it's secure at the back so it can cantilever and safely hang over the edge of the
16:23pond oh because of the cantilever over here we need to make sure you've got some really good anchors in
16:29this back so some really good deep posts probably did quite a big hole so we've got something to stop it
16:36getting off into the water once confident on its position lee creates a top for the platform shaping
16:43plants the desired surfy look everything's going great with the decking the scaff boards are fastened
16:50down now it's all nice and level more than that really pleased with it i just hope charlie loves it
16:57with the platform and patio in place pond dug and garden cleared at the end of day one the team have
17:03made great progress they're ready for charlie and lee's arrival in the morning this could be
17:10manchester's first inland beach yeah where is everything there's more here when i last saw it
17:19i'm just so stunned i mean i'm loving the deck as well that's surfboard yeah riding the wave riding
17:26the wave what you're doing now i mean we need a lot of plants don't we for this space yeah but what
17:31i'd love you to do for james and elizabeth is i want to give them a bit of a grown-up gardens because
17:37i think this is sort of their first proper garden if i'm pretending to be a grown-up today yeah what
17:42are you doing well i'm giving you two-thirds of the garden and i'm just doing the wildlife area at the
17:47bottom that sounds equitable no lots and lots to do to grab a spade watch the holes that's pergola holes
17:56there so what i wanted to create for elizabeth and james is a view from out of their patio doors so
18:02that is a key view down the garden but it's almost like i'm giving them three gardens so this area is
18:08going to be a sort of grown-up area lawn with a flower board around it pergola which frames the view
18:14down the garden a nice big border of shrubs and perennials to give lots of color around the lawn
18:22and the patio area and then we're going to have stepping stones that lead to the deck and i really
18:29want this area to be sort of full of wildlife very natural and sort of rural type feel to it so we're
18:37going to have some native trees a lovely pond and then we're going to put some beautiful boards at the
18:44back here so they can sit down on the deck and lean against it charlie's asked the landscaping team to
18:51hold on to any natural materials to further encourage wildlife at the back of the garden
19:00now this tree stump was dug up when they were digging out the pond and it's great for wildlife
19:05because you've got sort of old rotting bits of wood which the wildlife like beetles and earwigs and
19:13all sorts of things so they'll take this wood the rotting wood and use it to hibernate nest
19:18also the other thing is is there's lots of little nooks and crannies so you'll find that bees and
19:24little sort of native wasps will create little homes for themselves and for me i think that looks like
19:31a bit of art it's beautiful it's something gorgeous and it doesn't go into landfill so it's helping
19:38wildlife it's not going into landfill and it looks amazing
19:46lee's already discovered some important visitors
19:50you know this is really exciting we've got a small nest of what looks like carder bees
19:56which are actually a species of bumblebee here in the uk these bees have taken a load of moss and
20:02created this sort of ball nest of moss in this thicket of ivy and shrubs and you can see them all busy
20:08working away because now is the time that they need to fly out get loads of nectar and pollen
20:13for all the different cells where the eggs have been laid within that nest and then hopefully if
20:17they get enough nectar they'll be able to lay lava that will then turn into queens we also know that
20:23charlie's got some really beautiful wainy boards here that are going to help protect the deck but
20:28they're also going to protect these bees it's going to be great isn't it it's a nice torch isn't it
20:32everyone's got their own space at what will be a front lawn area lee the landscaper is building a
20:40pergola that will frame the view of the wildlife so what height are you actually going to make that
20:46then i'm thinking two four that's tall come down a little bit two two two two yeah that's the top of
20:54the pergola so that's updated then jamie everything's been worked to that okay well they're the same with
20:59the one up onto the onto the patio as well yeah so that frames that view as well for you all right
21:06we've been told andy is laying stepping stones that will connect to the wildlife area
21:13so andy when you get these next two slab stamps two yeah two two two yeah all right so one there
21:19one there because we're going from formal to wild woolly so you want them all more yeah
21:25iggledy-piggledy and then you can higgledy-piggledy onto the digger and then once i've dug that out
21:31move the rubbish and then once i've done that oh your job's so bad isn't it
21:42with stepping stones laid charlie's adding a layer of sand to the bottom of the pond
21:50that's covered with fleece before a pond lining is lay on top
21:54fleece is down now next thing is the liner we're using a pvc liner
22:00so it's a bit cheaper so this one's four and a half meters by four which way you go what's going on
22:05what's going on here well it's that way don't mind yeah these normally unfold very easily so this liner
22:14four and a half meters by four was 40 pounds so not bad there you go right on there and i'll slide in
22:22now pvc liners when it's cold they tend to be very stiff and really difficult to fold and get looking
22:28neat so if it's a cold day put them in the house to warm them up and they become much more supple
22:34and you get a neater finish how are you on your side mate yeah pretty good yours don't look too bad
22:43once there's some water in there yeah that's good now i think that's good
22:47right four hours later the pond should be full
22:59with the first pergola in progress
23:04lee and lee are building the second to frame the patio
23:12what's really lovely about this part of the process is these frames are really starting to
23:16bring the garden to life
23:23here each just about
23:28charlie plans to fill the space with colorful coastal inspired plants and grasses
23:37look at that have you got enough so i wanted to give james and elizabeth
23:43a little bit of everything some perennials some easy going shrubs and then down by the pond i'm
23:50making sort of a little glade for them oh very nice i mean i love the fact you've got a bit of
23:54variegation dark purples light purples yellows whites and then you know the meadow turf area around the pond
24:01what i want to sort of zhuzh it up a bit by by putting a few perennials in to make it a bit more glamorous so
24:07i'm going to add some lucansum bulletproof bulletproof and make a really big daisy chain with them
24:13and then i've got the trees at the back yeah so i've got some natives birch field maple hawthorn
24:23and yeah so that's strange that all these seem to be for my native area
24:28i want to get some more heights yes it would be lovely when i've got this birch which is one of
24:36the upright ones the back is it yeah sort of over there try not to the problem is they're going to
24:43fall over do we think there or do we think what do we think there i think back where you were back
24:51where it was that bit's so geometric yeah nice shape mind you this is meadow to a friend here
24:58doesn't matter there's a bit of grass here charlie's now root tickling to encourage more growth
25:09ah now we're actually planting at the height of summer and i wouldn't normally say it's a great
25:14time to plant trees but you can establish them you just need to be good at watering them what i love
25:20about this is you've got the noise haven't you the tree yeah the noise of your pond that's very relaxing yes
25:37yeah we'll get some earth around it yeah and i've got some gorgeous ferns and i've got some moss
25:50so you can i don't want to plant them yeah he always wants to plant i do i want this he loves ferns
25:56he loves a bit of moss on a trunk yeah i just like ferns because they're easy to plant
26:00ah angle duck quack quack duck who put that burglar there to give james and elizabeth support as they
26:13unwind at the wildlife area lee's creating a back for the platform from waney edged boards
26:20catch your eyes over this hold on then what yeah i like that with little gaps in between and you
26:27see the bark edge yeah that's lovely if i cut that down somewhere like that yeah and then we
26:33and we can maybe get some plants behind so they'll poke through yeah right very good i shall continue
26:41a wildlife area and pond made elizabeth and james enthusiastic for charlie's design
26:47to completely transform our garden from what it is now which is pretty much a dump
26:52into a nice relaxing space space for us to enjoy in two days
26:57it doesn't feel possible to me so wow yeah it'd be lovely
27:01are you happy with that charlie i think it's absolutely amazing and what i really love is
27:14that contrast between the gnarly sort of bark and the swirls but then the very smooth sawn bit as well
27:22playing at the gnarliness of me no and then once we've got we've got these haven't we to go here
27:28yeah like that look at that oh drop that brand again are you actually going to plant those
27:34and he's happy to lend a hand placing ferns to create some contrast across the large tree stump
27:45that looks gorgeous that's nice there isn't it it is absolutely stunning and where are you putting
27:54the other one i was thinking around the back there yeah maybe that's too close there
27:59so i might get there yeah at the back and then meadow turf yeah over the liner and then soil
28:07do you want uh you want hosta yeah the hosta say goldiana but let's have a look first yeah let's
28:16place in have a look uh get in get yeah there there yeah yeah
28:24a little bit different isn't it it is do you know what that reminds me of what one of those beauty
28:36pageant floats oh it does doesn't it to get you a little crown and wonk you on there later on
28:43it's suddenly coming together isn't it
28:44i want this to be full on color all around the patio this a little bit more calm serene because
28:55this is like the you know the chill out zone you know wild and free wild and free like when you've
29:01been surfing with patio pond and pergolas coming along nicely charlie and the team can concentrate on
29:10the planting uh now those are definitely mine some nice room i mean they're shocking pink aren't they
29:18they are strong pink towel pink color isn't it at the beach look at that little rose so cute
29:29down down that way down and then go go in go in go in and in the water that's it that's lovely
29:40um so that's it for soil now i've created a little bog garden here so we're using this tree trunk and
29:49then i've hung it over the pond liner so this soil here will always be nice and damp which these plants
29:57love so i've got hostas and ferns but i'm also planting this lythrum lythrum phallicaria now this is
30:05a cultivar of purple loosestrife this one's called robert and it's got these quite intense pink spikes
30:12of flowers the wildlife absolutely love it so it just adds a bit of pop of color to the water feature
30:20here we go coming together
30:34charlie is keen to bring a bit of tlc to some of the already established plants in james and elizabeth's
30:40garden so elizabeth and james originally wanted to get rid of all this ivy but charlie's actually
30:46dug heels in a little bit and kept it and i think it's a really good choice and that's because this
30:51ivy not only offers a habitat for things you see in the day but also nocturnal animals such as bats
30:57and would you believe it little pipistrels will use ivy when it's up on walls and buildings to dart in
31:03and out of at dusk to catch flies so it really is a fantastic plant and if you can keep it you're
31:08doing the world a great favor the landscapers have been busy laying fresh lawn close to the house
31:18and meadow turf to frame the wildlife area and pond now there's two key groups of plants that you
31:25really need in a pond to keep it clear and balanced first one oxygenating weed it's not a thing of
31:32beauty but it does an amazing job of keeping the pond clear and balanced you're aiming for about half
31:39the base to be covered with oxygenator so during the summer time you're going to thin it through
31:45every so often and hornwort's great because it's a nice straightforward easy one to plant because it
31:51sinks in the winter and it floats in the summer so it hasn't actually got any roots so it's just a
31:56case of chucking it in
32:07because we've got the ivy over there which is really vigorous charlie's picked another vigorous climber
32:13this which is the common hop cumulus lupinus and it's a fantastic plant if you're in a bit of a rush
32:20to cover an area with beautiful climbing foliage now this will adhere itself to this wooden post
32:26without any real help it's got these little tendrils that kind of sucker onto things now it
32:31will grow to about six meters in the next four years but you can be brutal with it when you prune
32:36it it has that scent of beer and then also apples and yeast so that when it's in full flower
32:42and once this is smothered elizabeth and james are going to get that sniff like they've just walked
32:46around the back of a pub maybe somewhere and it'll probably make them use that fatu even more and
32:51invite the friends around for drinks so if you're in a rush and you need something to scramble up
32:55somewhere with little attention then you'd be hard pressed to find a better climber than a hop
33:04now the other key plant for a pond is a water lily or maybe two or three depending on which ones you
33:11buy they are key to the ponds because they give you surface coverage which cuts out the sunlight so
33:18it helps keep the pond clear so i've got this one from my pond and it is a william shaw so it's a shell
33:26pink color and as you can see it's got the great big long leaves now what you do need to do with these
33:34is take off any of the dead flowers because you don't really want them rotting in the pond so it's just
33:39like dead heading them and then you're going to pot it up and garden soil's fine you don't have to
33:44use aquatic soil and put a big layer of gravel on the top to help the soil and what you don't want
33:50to do is cover the crown of the plant too much
34:09so as i said these water lily leaves will right themselves and grow to the right depth
34:16right there we go
34:23now already in the garden there's all sorts of bees and bumbles along with the carder bees flying
34:42around and this plant is going to become one of their favorites it's a circium commonly known as the
34:48thistle but don't panic or scream too loudly because this thistle doesn't have any spikes and
34:54it's a really easy plant to grow in particular if you're a beginner gardener now the reason why i love
35:00circium and i use it in a lot of planting schemes is that it flowers really early now this one must have
35:05been forced because usually it's gone over by now because they flower in may and what's fantastic about
35:11them is that bees absolutely loved them they're full of early nectar and pollen and they've got
35:17these ruby red almost like wine-like colored flowers and i reckon those bees at the back of
35:23the garden will soon find this circium and be having a little snack on its beautiful flowers absolutely
35:29wonderful
35:35with plants in place and all the main structures too charlie just has one finishing touch to add
35:41to the pond right we're just popping the pond pumping i just want the water just to ripple
35:48i don't want a big fountain or anything like that just a little bit of movement
35:57let's give that a go is that nice yeah so you've got a little bit of noise
36:02and it's agitating and it won't be upset in the water lily it's small but sweet and i love the sound
36:09it's very gentle it's actually quite relaxing the team have worked hard to create a garden inspired
36:19by the sea in just two days oh what a transformation i have to say the guys have done an amazing job
36:30by the time they cleared it out it was just a big blank space i know look at it now it's fantastic and i
36:36mean i'm loving this area i can see they're going to be partying there barbecues family big table and
36:44i think because this bit gets the views from the house this is like the nice clean area
36:48and then all of a sudden we're transported into the edge of a woodland yeah should we go get them
36:55come on then elizabeth and james's garden was once overgrown filled with the glass and rubble of
37:05greenhouses and garages that had once stood on its site but with a six thousand pound budget
37:13it's been transformed into a mature and defined space with plants and water to remind them of their
37:20favorite coastal retreat put you about there it's yeah no opening your eyes and i'll bring you right
37:31next to elizabeth right yet so you're not next door to each other yeah okay so elizabeth james reminds me
37:42what the garden was like before a dump site complete wasteland to be honest yeah yeah and somehow wild and
37:50barren at the same time okay so i'm hoping we've changed that for you and given you a garden that
37:58you'll grow into enjoy gardening and above all else lots of wildlife and a place to relax and enjoy
38:05do you want to open your eyes oh my god this is crazy oh my god is this our garden
38:18this looks amazing absolutely it's genuinely better than anything i could have ever thought it was going
38:24to be how have you done this in two days that is incredible this just looks amazing thank you so much
38:31slightly different oh it's like serene yeah i can't believe it it just looks amazing the pergolas do
38:39frame it so well like wow charlie's pulled a blinder giving him this really wildlife friendly garden
38:48absolutely gorgeous where the remnants of a removed garage once lay
38:53a pergola acts as a gateway to a social space with a clean modern patio bordered by inspired planting
39:05go into your patio area
39:11all the plants are very straightforward and easy yeah i think it's amazing how it's just surrounded by
39:16plants everywhere we'll be sat there relaxing hanging out with friends and family but just
39:21surrounded by all this amazing color because this was the old garage wasn't it yeah it's definitely
39:26changed quite a lot i love how many colors there are as well yeah yeah lots of vibrancy there and
39:33then when you get further down the garden it gets a little bit calmer so that's more of a chill out zone
39:38this is party zone yeah this is like oh so gorgeous all the different flowers it's like walking through a
39:44meadow it's it is exactly what we you know with looking at your design when we're looking at it all the
39:49different colors in the sense i'm just yeah it's better than the design i think it'd be it'd be hard
39:55to do that yeah i'm glad to hear that just absolutely love it and let's go down to the deck area the pond
40:05the back of the garden which once hid bricks glass and out of control shrubs
40:21is now a dedicated wildlife zone complete with pond surfboard shaped platform and planting ideal for damp areas
40:35so this will come up to sort of waist height so you'll be walking through sort of meadow plants
40:39as you walk down to the deck that is cantilevered over the pond
40:48what do you think to this wood the back to it oh it's beautiful i love it it's it's rustic but modern
40:54it's so nice oh they love those boards at the back and they are a little bit reminiscent of a
41:00surfboard still a bit beachy jalley so this will become up as a bit of a thicket so this will wrap
41:07around you and then you've got the pond it's amazing i can see us lying back on a summer's day
41:13maybe slightly nicer weather than this what do you think about the tree stump oh you reused it yes oh my
41:21god it's an ideal home for insects to hibernate in frogs to crawl up and get under look really cool
41:30but yeah it's your tree stuff you've basically got three gardens in one oh i just love it even the view
41:38from here back to the house it just looks so nice we were stood here the other day just looking at our
41:43old garden and now it's such a transformation thank you so much yeah this is just incredible i don't think
41:49we could have ever thought of doing something like this like this is never something we would
41:54have in our dreams wildest dreams even imagined so yeah thank you so much well it wasn't just me
42:01landscape as well and of course lee come on in lee so what do you think we love it it's absolutely
42:07amazing beyond anything we could imagine really like we were struggling to visualize it and now being
42:13here it just doesn't feel real to be honest i think we struggled to visualize it we saw the before
42:18yeah we did have a couple of moments didn't we were like because it was quite quite a lot going on
42:27yeah i mean you've got some absolutely gorgeous plants as well that charlie's picks which i think
42:31will really get you out into the garden yeah i love how they're just dotted about everywhere as well
42:35everywhere you look there's this color and all these plants uh stunning thank you so much we can't
42:42thank you enough really appreciate it very welcome so do you think you'll be going surfing more or less
42:47oh i don't know actually it's going to be a struggle to leave yeah i know this is going to be like our
42:52haven now isn't it this is so gorgeous it was so awful before we as i said we didn't know where to start
42:57with it because it was just a mess it's given us exactly what we wanted which was like that feeling of
43:02going away with with friends and family just relaxing it's the perfect social garden as they
43:10say it just can't believe this is your garden yeah i still can't it's still sinking i think
43:15it's all grand's off grand's off she's too excited might be 92 but come on charlie come on
43:29i think she's loving it
43:48yeah
