Chosen by the people of Sunderland - Name of city's newest landmark unveiled as Keel Crossing

00:00Councillor Michael Mordy, Leader of Sunderland City Council. I'm absolutely delighted to be here

00:10this morning on Cale Crossing, the new name for our new footbridge across the way, connecting the

00:14city centre to the Sheepfold and Stadium Alight. It's absolutely been blown away by the response

00:20of the people of Sunderland. Over a thousand individual submissions for names. They were

00:24shortlisted down by a panel of community and business representatives and the final vote has

00:29been made by the people of Sunderland. 55% of the nearly 5,000 votes cast chose Cale Crossing.

00:35I think it's a fitting name for this new landmark piece of infrastructure at the end of the

00:41Cale Line. So that's absolutely fitting that we pay tribute to our shipbuilding heritage.

00:46So I couldn't be more happy to announce this morning that the name of the new footbridge is

00:50the Cale Crossing.
