Trump defended his unilateral decision to deploy 700 U.S. Marines and thousands of National Guardsmen to Los Angeles without Governor Gavin Newsom’s consent, declaring, “I saved California.” Trump lashed out at Newsom, calling him “grossly incompetent” and accusing him of letting the state “burn.” The clash has ignited a constitutional firestorm, with California officials preparing a lawsuit, claiming federal overreach and abuse of power.

00:00He's an incompetent governor. He's destroying one of our great states. So we did the right thing. Everybody agrees to that.
00:06You said, quote, we have to go by the laws. We can't call in the National Guard unless we're requested by a governor.
00:12What change now? Why is this situation different to not consult with Governor Newsom about this?
00:17Well, the biggest change from that statement is we have an incompetent governor. So I talked about governors, but I didn't talk about he's an incompetent governor.
00:24Look at the job he's doing in California. He's destroying one of our great states. And if I didn't get involved, if we didn't bring the guard in, and we would bring more in if we needed it, because we have to make sure there's going to be law and order.
00:37You had a disaster happening, and they now admit it was a disaster. I watched the chief yesterday, who's a good man, by the way, and he said, well, we're lucky we did this because they were overwhelmed.
00:51You saw what was happening. So we did the right thing. Everybody agrees to that. But you have a governor who let the city burn down, didn't want water to be sent down to him.
01:02I mean, I sent billions of gallons of water. I wanted to do it in the first term. He wouldn't do it over, I don't know, they have environmental reasons, but there were no environmental reasons.
01:13I think it's just a political philosophy. But it's lucky for the people in Los Angeles and in California that we did what we did. We got it just in time.
01:24It's still simmering a little bit, but not very much. Yeah, please.
01:28The crime has he committed? I think his primary crime is running for governor, because he's done such a bad job.
01:42What he's done to that state is like what Biden did to this country. And that's pretty bad. It's the wrong philosophy.
01:50Thousands, hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants, many of them prisoners. They're taking up your health care. They're taking up your space in schools. They're taking up your hospital.
02:01And in many cases, they're criminals. And we have to do something about it. And we're doing something about it.
02:08I want to thank the incredible Patriots of ICE and Tom Holman, who has been incredible, and Kristi Noem, likewise incredible, the job they're doing.
02:20And it's like an unforced error. There was no reason for this.
02:2321 million people were allowed into our country, and many of those people were criminals.
02:29And it's a shame. It's a shame. But we're getting them out.
02:32And I will say, I think it's a 95-5 issue, just like so many other issues, 95-5.
02:40And the Democrats lost an election in a landslide because they're on the wrong side of the issues.
02:46I mean, it's not even conceivable that somebody would do the kind of things that he did.
02:52And then, you know, you talk about projects.
02:55They want to build a train going from San Francisco to L.A., and it's costing hundreds of billions of dollars more than they thought it was going to cost.
03:03It's not even believable.
03:04To Brad and to people sitting here, would you believe that a train, it was going to cost X dollars, and it might be 100 times X?
03:13Would have paid for this for about 50 million American children.
03:18You're right.
03:1850 million American children instead of a three-mile train track that never got built.
03:23We could have put Lincoln in charge.
03:25With no experience, he would have done a good job.
03:27I guarantee you that.
03:29All right, please, Peter.
03:30Mr. President, have you gotten an update from your negotiating?
03:33Thank you, President Trump.
03:34So it seems like Gavin Newsom likes the attention that he's getting right now from you.
03:39I do, yeah.
03:40It seems like he does.
03:41If you look at recent history, somebody who was running for president, you, who got arrested and had a mugshot, you could make the argument that politically that wound up helping you.
03:53Are you worried at all at this moment that talking about him getting arrested could be helpful to his political prospects?
04:01Because a lot of people think he wants to be sitting right where you are.
04:05Well, in my case, it was a witch hunt, and everybody knew it.
04:07And I was able to explain that during the process, otherwise I wouldn't be sitting here right now.
04:11And it was a total witch hunt.
04:13It's proven to be a witch hunt, and you see what's happened.
04:15In his case, it really is very obvious.
04:18You look at what's happened between the fires, between – I could name ten things right now.
04:25We talk about the trains.
04:26We talk about all of the costs in California.
04:29You talk about all of the people that are flowing and destroying life for everyone else.
04:34So, no, I don't think it's going to help him.
04:36I think it's actually very bad for him.
04:38And right around the time that we were walking in here, the governor and the state attorney general said that they're going to sue you for sending the National Guard in.
04:47They're saying there's no invasion.
04:48There's no rebellion.
04:49The president is trying to manufacture chaos and crisis on the ground for his own political ends.
04:55Federalizing the California National Guard is an abuse of the president's authority under law.
05:01Well, you know, it's interesting.
05:03You watch the same clips as I did.
05:05Cars burning all over the place, people rioting.
05:08And, by the way, we stopped it.
05:09We were able to make it much better.
05:11But it still looked pretty bad.
05:13And in watching clips last night, people were saying, this is really a big problem.
05:18And until we went in, if we didn't do the job, that place would be burning down just like the houses burned down.
05:24They were in big trouble last night, Peter.
05:25You know it.
05:26And the night before and the night before that.
05:29And I feel we had no choice.
05:31I don't want to see.
05:32I don't want to see happen what happened so many times in this country.
05:36I watched Minneapolis burn.
05:39I watched, look at what happened in so many different parts of California.
05:43You take a look at what happened in San Diego.
05:46There's so many different places where we let it burn.
05:50We want it to be politically correct.
05:51We want it to be nice.
05:53We want it to be nice to the criminal.
05:55And what you're doing is destroying the fabric of our life in this country.
05:58No, we did the right thing.
06:00We've been given credit by people that I would least suspect.
06:04I would say that some of the people that came in and said, thank goodness, they said, some of them, thank God that Trump got involved.
06:13And I'm very happy I got involved.
06:15And I think Gavin in his own way is probably happy I got involved.
06:19Yeah, go ahead, Peter.
06:20What do you make of the fact that he says you want a civil war on the streets of America?
06:27No, it's just the opposite.
06:28I don't want a civil war.
06:30Civil war would happen if you left it.
06:32If you left it to people like him, and I liked him.
06:35You know, I always got along with him.
06:36Never had a problem with him.
06:38But he's grossly incompetent.
