Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) is asked about Elon Musk's opposition to the Big Beautiful Bill.
Transcript
00:00What do you say to Republican senators like Rand Paul and Ron Johnson who are warning
00:18they're going to vote against this bill because they're concerned about the impact this will
00:21have on the deficit? Well, even the president says, you know,
00:24we've got to cut spending. Elon Musk said that there's not enough spending in it. And
00:29again, everybody's going to, we're going to try to appease everybody in the next three
00:34weeks of trying to get to a point where we can put lipstick on this pig in some areas
00:38that are not cut enough. And there needs to be some cuts. The American people can't afford
00:43it. We're way overspending. We've got an opportunity to do it. Now, I will say this, we also are
00:50going to have another opportunity with another reconciliation. I think there's going to be
00:56some sell points on that, that, hey, we'll cut next time. Next time is always down the
01:01road. I'm for cutting more, but I'm also making sure that we've got to get these tax cuts done
01:07and we've got to do it soon. Are you worried about the, what Elon Musk is saying here about
01:13that this bill could really drive up the national debt? It's going to drive up the debt. I mean,
01:18we, it's, all you got to do is look at the numbers. It's going to continue to grow. What,
01:2320 years, it's going to be 20, 30, three more dollars. We can't afford that to happen. We
01:29have got to be responsible for the American taxpayers. That's the reason we're going through
01:33this, these long meetings and talking about it line by line. And it just, it's, we're trying to do it
01:41all of the time. Okay. The big, beautiful bill is big. Not a lot of it is beautiful. Some of it's
01:46beautiful. But again, when you mix it all together, it just makes it that much harder.
01:51So is it going to be hard for you to support this?
01:54Well, I will support the tax cuts and I know how important that is. And at the end of the day,
02:00I've got to grip my teeth and vote for it. Yes, I will. But everybody's doing the right thing of
02:07looking at this and trying to make, make cuts that, number one, if it goes back to the House,
02:12that they have a chance to pass it. We, it's, it's a two-way street here, not just for us. So
02:17it's going to be a long haul between now and, now and July. One other thing. The New York
02:22Republicans are saying, don't change the SALT deal that they cut there. Could you stomach the SALT deal
02:28that they have? Well, I could probably stomach it. It's not good for my people in the state of
02:33Alabama. We're basically paying for, for what's going to happen in some of the bigger states. But
02:38I'm going to leave that up to Leader Thune. He's working on that hard. He basically needs to handle
02:45that himself. You know, that's not going to be a deal breaker for me. It might be for some. I know
02:50as Rand Paul said, the deal breaker for him is the five-tree and debt limit. There might be an
02:57opportunity maybe to change it down a little bit to 3-tree and put the next, next debt limit
03:02in the, in the next reconciliation. There's got to be a lot of give and take. We've got to get
03:07this passed for the, for the taxes. But again, this, this is a, there's a lot of ugly things,
03:13but there's a lot of great things in this bill. Okay. I'll let you go. All right. Thanks for
03:16time. All right. See ya. Thanks.
