00:00Malcolm Marshall, the West Indies' master, a blazing spell that crushed India at Port
00:05of Spain, Trinidad, in April 1989.
00:09The Queen's Park Oval witnessed a display of fast-balling that echoed through the corridors
00:14of cricketing history.
00:15Malcolm Marshall delivered a spell-binding performance in the third test against India
00:20that left fans in baffle and the opposition in tatters.
00:24This sheer pace, control and hostility led the West Indies to a thumping 217-run victory.
00:30And what a victory it was.
00:33So if you're cricket lovers, take a moment to rewind the clock, relive that unforgettable
00:38spell.
00:39Watch again how Malcolm Marshall ran in from his mark, eyes focused, arms pumping, unleashing
00:44deliveries that made up the stump stance.
00:47Malcolm Marshall's 11th wicket hall at Port of Spain, a spell of pure devastation from
00:52the arc creators to ever do it.
00:56And the next change, Malcolm Marshall, the man who broke the test record for the West Indies
01:03in the Barbados.
01:05Marshall again.
01:06That's a nick.
01:09Just beat Stoojohn the keeper, probably outside the arc of his reach and well did it reach Vivian
01:17Richards.
01:18I don't think it did, Tony, but Vivian Richards did amazingly well to actually pick this up
01:23cleanly with a diving form of Dujon in front of him, and the half volley, that really was
01:28a fine stop by Richards.
01:29It's 27, we're in the 14th over.
01:33Marshall to Stoojohn.
01:34Oh, that beats him.
01:35Just moves away.
01:37Wow, this man Marshall, he really has tormented so many batsmen.
01:42I don't think Stoojohn fancies it too much.
01:47Heads over the ball, but his feet are nowhere near in line.
01:51Marshall again.
01:52Oops, it's all over, it is all over.
01:57A little ball danced by Marshall, and Stoojohn finds the ball coming back this time off the
02:04wicket, in towards him, and over they go.
02:08So the first wicket falls, Stoojohn ball Marshall for 11, and that's a very important breakthrough
02:15for West Indies.
02:17What a good ball this was, it was like a fast medium off break, and Stoojohn just had no
02:23counter.
02:24It took him a long time to get started.
02:26This is Marshall.
02:28Gets a bit of luck there.
02:34Not the easiest pitch to play on.
02:38Still the grass on it in the second day, lighter in colour, but still grass which helps the movement
02:43of the fast bowler, the ball which hits the seam.
02:47And in comes Malcolm Marshall to Ravi Shastri.
02:53Pops to Logie, and he's out.
02:55He's caught.
02:57It was off the bat, it went very quickly indeed.
03:01And Logie doesn't miss those, he's very smart about that position.
03:07This bounced a bit more than Shastri thought.
03:09He got a slight pad on it as well, which slowed it down sufficiently, but he just got the edge
03:15of the bat.
03:16A highly accomplished batsman of international reputation, but no luck so far on this tour.
03:27That ball, from the time it's a no ball, from the time it leaves the hand until Dujon gets
03:39a glove to it, is inside half a second.
03:41And there's a very strong shot there for LBW, took a bit of a chance in kicking that away,
03:52the young 22 year old Venkat Rahman.
03:55Of course the law says that if you don't play a shot, you can be out, there was never any
03:59danger of that being given out.
04:01And it's an edge, and it's caught.
04:09So Aaron Lyle, after a long fighting innings, is caught by Richards at first slip.
04:15Nice height to come through, off the bowling of Marshall for 30, and they must have sore hands
04:21these West Indians.
04:24Fine ball, just pitched about off stump and left him, Aaron got in exactly the right position,
04:30and Viv Richards, who's got very good hands, little and sore hands, probably has been awarded
04:35a flag for that catch, straight into the mitts.
04:38Or a flag day.
04:40Oh, that's a colourful side.
04:4761 for 4.
04:49And India are in real trouble, remember they're pursuing 340 in which West Indies got, in their
04:57first innings.
05:00But it was a good performance by Aaron Lyle.
05:04You need courage to play against these big fast bowlers, especially with the encouragement
05:09they get from that noisy crowd.
05:12Sanjay Mandraka.
05:13Highest score there, 108.
05:16That was in the second test match.
05:19Here comes Marshall.
05:22That's well played.
05:25Ball just hopping a bit.
05:28Marshall.
05:29Appeal against Mandraka and, oh dear for India, Mandraka goes for 0.
05:43Fine bowling by Marshall.
05:44Very little movement on the crease from Mandraka.
05:47But we know what a fine theory is, and that's quite a blow.
05:50And certainly if there's one bowl in the world you don't want to face as a new batsman, it's
05:54this man, Malcolm Marshall.
05:55Nipped that one back off the seam.
05:56Mandraka got in the right position, but the ball was just too good for him.
05:57That probably would have been a test day if he'd been in for about half an hour or so.
06:02So five wickets down now, 69 runs only, and India in dire straits.
06:22This is Kappel down facing Marshall.
06:26Well, Kappel always looks very relaxed, or is it lethargic?
06:30It's very difficult to tell which mission he's on.
06:35Just nearly got through, didn't it?
06:37Didn't bounce very high.
06:38Came back like an off-break, and Kappel just got down on that in time.
06:47No ball called.
06:49I have the feeling that Kappel was playing that shot anyway.
06:52Ball just moving slightly in the air, or maybe off the pitch, but certainly leaving the bat.
06:58And this is the wicket that West Indies really want, because Kappel is still, even though
07:02he might be in the twilight of his international career, a very fine striker of the ball.
07:14He's gone.
07:16He'll do well to smile now.
07:18Malcolm Marshall, lovely teasing length outside the off-stump.
07:23And Kappel, of course, irresistibly Kappel there, has to play an attacking shot.
07:28Flicks the outside edge of the bat.
07:30And not quite in the right position.
07:35But if you stop him playing shots like this, then you stop one of the great entertainers in the world of cricket.
07:40Just carrying the Dujol.
07:41Indication that the pace is going out of the pitch a bit.
07:50More than one barrage of short, fast bowling from these boys is Marshall.
07:54Down the leg side.
07:55No problem for Kira Mori.
07:56Marshall, a little bit of annoyed.
07:57And now it's Malcolm Marshall.
07:59Hit him on the pad.
08:00And it's straight.
08:01Marshall keeping the ball well up to the bat.
08:09And rookery, the Venka Drahman, is gone until the second Indian wicket falls.
08:26Played pretty well, this young man.
08:27But Marshall is so experienced and he gets, I suppose, 40% of his wickets LBW.
08:38Falls very, very straight.
08:40And if you miss it, you've got to be up.
08:47Sarka faces Marshall.
08:48Oh, an appeal.
08:49Not out.
08:50When Sarka's got five of his 17 test hundreds against West Indies, and so this is a wicket
09:05that they'll really prize.
09:10Sanjay Mandraka is the incoming batsman, the young man who got a century in the first
09:16innings of the Barbados test match.
09:19So Shastry's gone for five.
09:21It's 64 for three.
09:23And here comes Marshall to Mandraka.
09:26Oh, it's low.
09:28It's struck him and it's out.
09:30What a tragedy for Mandraka.
09:33LBW to Marshall for one.
09:36And the fourth wicket goes down.
09:40There's nothing you can do when things are going against you.
09:43Shastry got one that lifted from the other end.
09:45This one shot along the ground.
09:46And that hit him, what, six inches above the ankle.
09:50Absolutely unfiable.
09:52And this is Kapil Dev.
10:01Facing Marshall.
10:03Good, strong shot.
10:04Typically Kapil.
10:05That'll be four runs.
10:06Not many shots to admire.
10:19Marshall to Arunlal.
10:20It's wide.
10:21It's a faint little tickle.
10:22And Arunlal is gone.
10:23Marshall, the master of line and length.
10:24Another wicket to him.
10:25Arunlal has gone for a very courageous 18.
10:26Needn't have played with this one.
10:28It's one of the few mistakes in judgment of width that Arunlal has made.
10:35And he pays the penalty.
10:37Markup Marshall.
10:38Markup Marshall.
10:39An edge by Veng Sarka.
10:40And that, just wide of Dujon it seems, certainly didn't carry to Richards.
10:44That's no doubt about it a chance.
10:45It would have been a great catch by Dujon.
10:46He made a lot of distance to his right.
10:47Got a good glove to it.
10:48And just knocked it wide of Richards.
10:492.50 to win.
10:50Marshall to Moray.
10:51Markup Marshall.
10:52Markup Marshall.
10:54Markup Marshall.
10:55An edge by Veng Sarka.
10:56And that, just wide of Dujon it seems, certainly didn't carry to Richards.
11:01That's no doubt about it a chance.
11:04It would have been a great catch by Dujon.
11:06He made a lot of distance to his right.
11:09Got a good glove to it.
11:10And just knocked it wide of Richards.
11:122.50 to win.
11:14Marshall to Moray.
11:17Heal for EBW.
11:22But Kira Moray, just a bit on the move there.
11:28Certainly quite a long way forward.
11:29This looked a reasonable shelf though.
11:31He's not all that far outside the off stump.
11:40Oh, strikes him on the pad.
11:42And, well, it must have been very close indeed.
11:46One of those we've seen in this match that keeps a little low.
11:51This was a magnificent ball.
11:53Not only kept low, but nipped back.
11:55In fact, it probably did too much with a bit in the leg stump.
11:59And that's another close shot.
12:05It's given out this time.
12:07Well, Kira Moray thought he was far enough outside the off stump to be safe.
12:11You can be given out if the umpire thinks the ball is hitting the stumps.
12:17But, er, we really are watching the last rites.
12:21Marshall again.
12:22One of the pleasing things, Tony, is how few blocks.
12:26Marshall to Wingsaka.
12:27Oh, another good ball.
12:28And Wingsaka is a really good player.
12:30Just playing himself into much better form.
12:32And yet, Marshall is that much better than him this time.
12:33Like a quick leg break.
12:34Even a great player like Wingsaka could.
12:35But, er, the end result is the same.
12:36Can't deny that.
12:37Using the feet to mark a Marshall is, er, one way, must be a new ball.
12:42And Wingsaka is a really good player.
12:46Just playing himself into much better form.
12:50And yet, Marshall is that much better than him this time.
12:54Like a quick leg break.
12:56Even a great player like Wingsaka could.
12:59But, er, the end result is the same.
13:01Can't deny that.
13:02Using the feet to mark a Marshall is, er,
13:06I wonder if it must be a new fashion.
13:13Marshall wouldn't see the humor of it.
13:15Giving himself plenty of room.
13:17And I'd be on the back foot with the next ball if I was the batsman.
13:20It's Courtney Walsh just sticking her hand up in the air.
13:27Marshall again to Cheetan Sharma.
13:30Pops all over.
13:31That'll teach you to use your feet to me and knock me over the top.
13:38Straight.
13:39Fast.
13:40Lethal.
13:41Sharma has gone for seven.
13:43He's got a spirit of camaraderie between the opening bowlers.
13:53Hilton Sharma is the opening bowler for India.
13:55Marshall, of course, the great...
13:59Narendra Hirwani is the last man.
14:01Just been playing a little over an hour on this fifth and final day.
14:13Oh, Wingsaka's gone.
14:15It's the captain who goes, not Hirwani.
14:17And that really is the end of the match and the end of the series.
14:22In the first innings, Malcolm Marshall was unstoppable.
14:32Charging in with manners, he rattled the Indian top and middle order with deadly precision.
14:37Returning incredible figures of five for 34 in 17 awards including seven mid-ins.
14:43Every ball he bowled seemed like a ticking time bomb and the Indians had no answers.
14:48In the second innings, he turned it up a notch.
14:50If the first spell was brutal, the second was carnage.
14:53He ripped through the Indian, batting once more.
14:56Claiming six for 55 in 19.5 overs with just two mid-ins.
15:01Sealing the match and finishing with breathtaking match figure of 11 for 89.
15:05It was not just a performance, it was a statement.
15:08A reminder to the world why Malcolm Marshall is regarded by many as the greatest fastballers
15:14in the history of the game.
15:16His ability to swing the ball at high speed combined with relentless accuracy and aggressive
15:22intent made him a nightmare for any best man.
15:25He was of course named player of the match and rightfully so.
15:28The Port of Spain crowd knew that they had witnessed something special.
15:32This was not just another test win.
15:34It was a lesson in fastballing delivered by a true master.
15:38Malcolm Marshall was not just a fastballer.
15:41He was an enigma wrapped in pace and precision.
15:44Despite standing at just 5 feet 11 inches, shorter than most of his fearsome contemporaries,
15:50Malcolm Marshall generated extraordinary speed and bounce, often surprising best men who underestimated
15:56his stature.
15:57One of the rarest and most awe-inspiring facts about him is that he once bowled and took seven
16:04wickets in a test match against England at Headingley Leeds with a broken thumb on his
16:09left hand.
16:10Heavily bandaged yet delivering thunder boards with his right.
16:13Off the field he was known for his humility and sharp cricketing brain, later mentoring young
16:18ballers like Sean Pollock during his coaching stint in South Africa.
16:22Malcolm Marshall also holds the distinction of having one of the best bowling average 20.94
16:28among all fastballers who have taken over 200 test wickets, a testament to his consistency
16:35and dominance.
16:36Unlike many Pacers, he was equally dangerous in both home and away conditions, with 11 of
16:43his 22 five-wicket hauls coming outside the Caribbean.
16:46His devastating lead swing at high speed mixed with pinpoint accuracy made him not just a
16:53threat but a nightmare for even the best baseman in the world.
