00:00In 1989, during the second test against India at Bridgetown, legendary West Indies fastballer
00:06Malcolm Marshall etched his name in history.
00:09He broke Lance Gibbs' long-standing West Indies record of 309 test wickets, and he
00:14did it in style.
00:15Lance Gibbs, the classy off-spinner, had taken 309 wickets in 79 matches, but Malcolm Marshall
00:22stormed past that milestone in just 64 tests, with a brilliant career average of 20.87 at
00:29the time.
00:30In this memorable innings, Malcolm Marshall delivered a fiery spell, finishing with 5-for-60,
00:35dismantling the Indian batting lineup.
00:37His performance helped West Indies seal the match with an 8-wicket victory.
00:41Malcolm Marshall's record would later be surpassed by another West Indies' great Courtney
00:45Walsh, but this moment in Bridgetown remains unforgettable.
00:49Let's relive that magic day, when Malcolm Marshall became West Indies' leading wicket
00:54taker and cherish the golden era of the Caribbean pace.
01:01This is Sidhu, and he's caught, and he's gone.
01:03Gus Kloge loves taking catches like that.
01:08But celebration 2 for Malcolm Marshall, because he's equalled Lance Gibbs' record of wickets
01:14and test matches by a West Indian.
01:18This is his 309th wicket, and it came like this.
01:25Tragedy for India, because Sidhu had been playing well in the series.
01:33So India, one wicket down, and yet to score.
01:40Malcolm Marshall.
01:45A half shout, but not a serious one by West Indies.
01:52So, there's the information, 309 test match wickets.
01:56Just needs one more now, to be the highest test wicket taker from the Caribbean.
02:03And what a marvellous bowler he is.
02:06So intelligent and quick.
02:13Again, firing on the next side.
02:15Marshall not quite got his line yet.
02:21Tries to bow to the inswinger.
02:23Azaruddin faces Marshall.
02:33A nick, and he's caught.
02:35And that's more than a dismissal of Azaruddin.
02:37That is the new West Indies record for Malcolm Marshall.
02:40310 wickets in test cricket.
02:43And no one from the Caribbean has ever done that before.
02:46Azaruddin will go down in the records.
02:52Unfortunately, as the record victim.
02:55Just playing away from the body.
02:57Nicely taken by Dujon.
03:00And more celebrations for Malcolm Marshall.
03:03Well, he can't believe it.
03:0753 for 4.
03:09This is that Marshall, Malcolm Marshall.
03:12310 wickets you see.
03:15From 64 matches.
03:17Vance Gibbs took 79 matches to get his 309.
03:215, and Capital Dev, the former Indian captain, has come to the crease.
03:31One of the great all-rounders of the game.
03:33Facing the bowling of Malcolm Marshall.
03:36Oh, brilliant catch by Dujon.
03:40Diving across in front of Richards at first clip.
03:44And Capital Dev is gone.
03:46Marshall can do no wrong.
03:50Again Capital, like so many Indian batsmen, playing away from the body.
03:57Not quite behind it.
03:59The idea really is to line it up.
04:01And Dujon a marvellous catch.
04:05It's not been Capital's tour so far.
04:14So here's a team that expects to win and win easily.
04:25Gaslogi behind that grilled helmet.
04:2963 for 6.
04:31A dismal score.
04:35Oh, it's gone through and they're appealing for something.
04:38Shastri indicating that the ball nipped through and flipped the top of the pad.
04:43Or maybe the trouser just made a sound that alerted those behind.
04:48That it might have come off the inside of the bat.
04:51This Marshall really does everything with the ball.
05:06Movement off the seam.
05:08Really quick pace.
05:10Malcolm Marshall was one of the most feared and skillful fastballers in the history of cricket.
05:31Born in Barbados, he played a key role in the legendary West Indies teams of the 1980s.
05:37Though not as tall as most traditional fastballers.
05:40Malcolm Marshall made up for it with sheer pace, accuracy, clever variation and the ability to swing the ball both paces.
05:48His aggressive approach coupled with a smooth run-up and explosive delivery stride made him a nightmare for best men across the world.
05:56In his task career, Malcolm Marshall played 81 task matches and took an impressive 376 wickets at an outstanding average of 20.94.
06:05He recorded 22 five-wicket hauls and four ten-wicket match hauls.
06:09His best bowling figure in an innings was 7 for 22 and his best in a match was 10 for 92 with an economy rate of just 2.68 and a strike rate of 46.7.
06:22He was both economical and deadly accurate.
06:25These numbers speak volumes about his dominance in consistency over the years.
06:30One of his most memorable moments of his career came in 1984 when he balled with a broken thumb against England and still managed to take seven wickets in the match.
06:39He was also a master of reverse swing balling, especially dangerous with the old ball, and could exploit any kind of pitch, whether fast and bouncy or slow and flat pitches.
06:49Although Malcolm Marshall passed away at the young age of 41 in 1999, his legacy lives on.
06:56He is remembered not just for his phenomenal bowling but also for his fighting spirit and passion for the game.
07:02To this day, aspiring fastballers look up to him as a role model and inspiration.
