00:00A-Train's cheat meals would definitely be different than mine.
00:03His cheat meal would be more like what we used to see The Rock doing, it was like these
00:07viral meals of him eating stacks of pancakes and 10 eggs, you know what I mean?
00:12I felt like A-Train's cheat meal would be something like that, maybe like an entire
00:16birthday cake.
00:17I don't even know, I don't even know like what you could possibly eat to put those kind
00:21of calories in, but it seems even working for him.
00:29What up Men's Health, I'm Jesse T. Usher and today I'm about to tell you what my diet
00:33looks like and also how it informs my training.
00:38As you can see, I'm here in my kitchen, that's because this is where it all goes down.
00:43I don't count macros, I've never been that into it, even when I had like a nutritionist
00:49and a physical trainer.
00:50The only thing that I did count was how many grams of protein I was taking in because that
00:54was like the most important thing at the time.
00:56As far as supplement goes, I usually will take D3, you know like a B-Complex, I might
01:05throw a little turmeric in there, health, antioxidants, things of that sort.
01:09When I wake up in the mornings, I have some water, just sort of help wake myself up.
01:14But I will go about an hour or two before I have anything to eat breakfast wise.
01:20When I'm shooting, my diet is a little stricter.
01:23For breakfast during production, I might just have three or four eggs, throw some herbs or
01:28whatever in there, you know just for taste, a little bit of salt and pepper.
01:32And fruit, bananas, strawberries, blueberries, that type of thing.
01:36And I just mix them up.
01:38My lunch meal, I usually keep it a little bit lighter.
01:41That's when I do like the quinoa bowls or, you know, I go down to Cava and grab a salad
01:46bowl, throw some lentils in there and have chicken with it and vegetables and, you know,
01:50things of that sort and sort of just try to get a nice, well-balanced meal.
01:54In terms of snacks, here's where the balance part comes back in.
01:57My snacks are usually unhealthy, I'm just saying.
01:59I do Funyuns, Nutter Butters, whatever.
02:01If I'm hitting the gym in the morning, then after the gym, I'll usually just do a protein shake,
02:06usually like a peanut butter or flavor.
02:09I always have my shakes with either oat or almond milk.
02:12And then when it comes time for dinner, then I'm doing something a little heavier and I'm
02:16going, you know, chicken breast and chicken thigh or, you know, just multiple pieces of
02:21whatever it is.
02:22I love fish, so I do sea bass a lot.
02:25I love white fish, things like that.
02:26I also love salmon.
02:27After dinner, I typically don't eat much of anything else.
02:31I might just have like a cup of juice, you know what I mean?
02:34I love grape juice.
02:35Fruit juices in general, I think are pretty big in my family, can't knock fruit juices.
02:39So in terms of my workouts, I like to do fast paced, not super high intensity workouts, but
02:46I do like to do a lot of resistance training.
02:48Sometimes when I'm working out a lot more, if I'm doing like six days in the gym and then
02:53like one day of rest and I'm very specific about like the muscle groups that I'm hitting
02:57every day, then I'll separate and just do like resistance training some days and then
03:01cardio some other days.
03:03You know, maybe even one day additional just rest and stretching and might go do some yoga
03:08like where I can feel like I really did something.
03:11So that's sort of how my workouts go.
03:13The only role that I ever drastically changed anything for as far as like eating habits and
03:19workouts was survivor's remorse.
03:21When I started survivor's remorse, I was small.
03:23I was like 150, 152, I believe was the, my, my way in and I was playing professional basketball
03:30player.
03:30So obviously I was too small, you know, myself, the producers, everybody, we felt like I was
03:34just too thin.
03:35So I had to put on weight.
03:37I got a nutritionist and a trainer, uh, workout regimens.
03:40I started eating more, you know what I mean?
03:42And eventually I got to like 180.
03:44Did I change my diet for the boys?
03:46Honestly, no, no.
03:47I was already, by the time I got to the boys, I was already health conscious.
03:50You know, I was already very much aware of what I was putting in my body and how a day
03:54of working out for the boys is a little bit different.
03:56I feel like I added more variations of cardio work.
04:00You know, when you shoot, you just have no idea what they're about to throw at you.
04:03I just want to be ready for all of those challenges, especially the cardio things.
04:08I just wanted to have the endurance to be able to get through whatever type of scene
04:12that I would possibly be shooting.
04:14Hey, train cheap meals would definitely be different than mine.
04:17He has a much higher caloric intake than I would ever have.
04:22His cheat meal would be more like what we used to see the rock doing.
04:25It was like these viral meals of him eating stacks of pancakes and 10 eggs.
04:30You know what I mean?
04:30I felt like a train's cheat meal would be something like that.
04:33Maybe like an entire birthday cake.
04:35I don't even know.
04:37I don't even know like what you could possibly eat to put those kinds of calories in,
04:40but it seems even working for him.
04:42I found that the only way to really maintain a healthy diet and lifestyle while on production
04:49is to meal prep.
04:50When I get home, I don't want to have those desperate time costs for desperate measures,
04:55meals.
04:55I want everything to be laid out.
04:57And if I choose to cheat, then I choose to cheat, whatever.
04:59But having everything in place already before the week starts because you just never know.
05:05What's harder?
05:06Diet or training?
05:07Definitely diet.
05:08Training, physical activity, all that type of stuff.
05:11I've always been into it.
05:12You know, a lot of times I'd rather go to the gym than like to the movies.
05:15So training is easy.
05:16Dieting, tough.
05:18Toughest diet that I've ever done for a role would definitely be Survivors of Morse
05:22when I was pushing myself to eat more so that I could gain more.
05:25That was hard, man.
05:26Trying to force down seven, eight meals a day.
05:29Sometimes I was just sick of food.
05:31What is my favorite carb?
05:34Maybe potatoes.
05:35It's red skin potatoes.
05:37Potato chips.
05:38You know what I mean?
05:39Who doesn't love potato chips?
05:41What is the secret to a really good protein shake?
05:44I think it's consistency.
05:45And also like a good blender too.
05:47Cause there's nothing I hate more than like having a protein shake with chunks in it.
05:52Oh no.
05:53I need mine to be smooth.
05:55Or I honestly probably just want to drink it.
05:57The last meal I cooked for a date.
06:00Ooh.
06:01I think I did roasted sweet potatoes.
06:03I think I did something on the grill.
06:05Oh, I made burgers and steaks actually.
06:07And yeah, you know, a little salad.
06:10Just radishes all the things.
06:12Smooth or chunky peanut butter?
06:14Smooth.
06:15All day.
06:16Do I dip my pizza crust in anything?
06:18No, but I do like when they put the garlic butter on the pizza crust.
06:21Cause then it's like a little piece of garlic bread after I finish the slice.
06:26Little bonus.
06:27Which character would you like to have a meal with?
06:30Probably Cam Calloway.
06:31I feel like we're right about the same plane.
06:34You know, Cam was real enough to have cheat meals just be a part of life.
06:38But also he's a professional athlete.
06:40So he's obviously health conscious and you know, very physical and things like that.
06:43I feel like we're right on par with each other.
06:45That's the best food smell in the world.
06:49Microwave popcorn probably got the best smell out of anything.
06:52Like it'll wake you up out of your sleep.
06:55It smells so good.
06:56Relationship to bread.
06:57I love bread.
06:58And no matter how health conscious I get, I don't think I'll ever cut bread out of my diet.
07:03Not entirely.
07:04I love waffles.
07:05You know what I mean?
07:06Who can live without waffle?
07:07Come on, bro.
07:08My in and out order.
07:09Easy.
07:10Double double with no cheese.
07:11And I would like to have my fries light with an extra pack of spread and a little thing of chilies to go.
07:17All right.
07:18So everybody, thank you for tuning in.
07:21That's my my diet.
07:23That's my lifestyle of food.
07:26And I think the most important message is just to have a nice balance and to be conscious of what you're putting into your body.
07:34You know, you want it to last you as long as it possibly can.
07:38And I think that starts in the kitchen.
07:39Don't forget to get some bunions and some chips and stuff from time to time, though.
07:43It'll definitely put a smile on your face.
07:44I'm also a big fan of candy.
07:46But aside from that, do what's good for you.
07:49All right.
07:50Peace.
