Tafsir (Explanation) of Surah Al-Qiyamah (Surah 75)
Surah Al-Qiyamah (The Resurrection) is a Meccan Surah consisting of 40 verses. It focuses primarily on the themes of resurrection, the afterlife, accountability, and human denial of the Day of Judgment. Here is a summary and tafsir of its key sections:
Verses 1–6: Oath and Human Denial 1. "I swear by the Day of Resurrection," 2. "And I swear by the self-reproaching soul," 3. "Does man think that We will not assemble his bones?" 4. "Yes. [We are] Able [even] to proportion his fingertips."
Tafsir:
Allah begins by taking two powerful oaths: by the Day of Resurrection and by the self-reproaching soul (an-nafs al-lawwāmah) — the inner voice that feels guilt and remorse for wrongdoing.
These oaths emphasize the certainty and seriousness of resurrection.
Allah addresses the doubt of those who deny resurrection, assuring them that re-creating human bodies (even to the detail of fingertips) is easy for Him.
Verses 7–15: Denial and Accountability 5. "But man desires to continue in sin."
Tafsir:
Human beings deny resurrection not due to lack of evidence, but because of a desire to live without restrictions.
On that Day, every person will be informed of what they did—even their excuses won’t help.
Verses 16–19: Revelation Guidance 16. "Do not move your tongue with it, [O Muhammad], to hasten with recitation of the Qur'an."
Tafsir:
These verses were revealed when Prophet Muhammad ﷺ would try to quickly memorize the revelation as it came.
Allah assures him that He will preserve it in his heart and that the explanation of the Qur'an is His responsibility.
Verses 20–25: Love of the World vs. the Hereafter 20. "No! But you love the immediate [worldly life]." 21. "And leave the Hereafter."
Tafsir:
This is a reprimand to those who prefer the temporary pleasures of this world over the eternal Hereafter.
It points out the shortsightedness of such choices.
Verses 26–30: The Time of Death 26. "No! When the soul has reached the collar bones..." 30. "To your Lord, that Day, will be the procession."
Tafsir:
A vivid description of the moment of death: the struggle of the soul, the helplessness of people, and the certainty that the soul will return to Allah.
Verses 31–40: Judgment and Power of Allah 36. "Does man think that he will be left neglected?"
Tafsir:
These verses challenge the human assumption that life is without purpose or accountability.
Allah reminds humans of their creation from a drop of fluid, emphasizing that the One who created them can easily resurrect them.
Ends with a rhetorical question: Is not He able to give life to the dead? Yes, certainly He is.
