00:30I'm pleased with the way things are going.
00:56Obviously, matches only get tougher, so I look forward to the next challenge.
01:04Just asking, well done, just asking you about your next opponent, Sasha.
01:08He's one of several younger players, like I said, a lot of people are younger than you now,
01:12but he's one of several younger players who talk about you as someone who...
01:16He's 10 years younger.
01:18Yeah, I know.
01:18I mean, he calls himself a veteran of the game.
01:21I mean, what should I call myself then?
01:23Right, he's a rookie compared to you.
01:26But he's one of many younger players.
01:29You talk about you helping them when they were younger.
01:33Would you have done that if you'd known you were going to still be playing them at this point
01:37and helping them along?
01:38I mean, sort of what drove you to give this assistance to this whole new generation
01:43that you're still battling against?
01:46Well, I don't think that's something special.
01:49You know, I just see it as something that I feel it's normal for me.
01:57Like, that's something that I always wanted to do.
02:01Like, if one day I would, you know, reach certain heights in the sport
02:06and then obviously convey that, transfer that to a new generation
02:11and help new players be even better.
02:13or, you know, so I always had that kind of attitude because when I was younger
02:20I was looking for that from the players that I was looking up to.
02:26So, you know, some were more daring or caring to share and some not.
02:33But I do understand that at this level, particularly when you are, you know,
02:43at the top of the game with someone, even though you had a great relationship
02:47and you still maintain that great relationship,
02:49but maybe you're not sharing as much as you used to.
02:53And that kind of was the case with, you know, Medvedev and Tsitsipas
02:56when they were coming up and Zverev, you know,
02:58when they were really, really young and kind of breaking through,
03:02it was more exchanges maybe on some things, whether it was, I don't know,
03:07from just strokes or strings they use or the way you train or recover
03:13and stuff like this, you know, then, you know,
03:17when they get to do top ten, top five in the world, it's different.
03:20It's a different dynamic and it's kind of normal to expect that.
03:23But nevertheless, I, you know, whether it's for Menchik or whoever it is for,
03:29I tell everyone that I'm available, you know, if they need a call about anything
03:34because I feel like that's what I owe to the game, not just to them,
03:40but to the game of tennis.
03:42I feel like that's something that is normal for me in the end of the day.
03:46What's the value of the knowledge or experience that you have
03:51if you don't transfer it to someone who's coming up?
03:56I know that.
03:58Your serve's a huge part of your game, always has been.
04:01I noticed that, I think I'm right in saying you've won the toss three times
04:05out of four here and you've served every time.
04:07Is your instinct always to serve?
04:09What goes through your head when you make that decision?
04:12You know, it's an interesting question because I,
04:14at the beginning of my career, I was actually,
04:17even though I really liked my chances when I'm serving,
04:23but I was relying more on the return, so I would start returning.
04:28I would always choose the, you know, the toss.
04:31If I get the coin toss, I would choose return.
04:33But I don't know, the last, whatever, 10 years,
04:37I would be only choosing to serve.
04:39I just feel, I don't know, I just feel that that sets a tone in some way.
04:47You know, you also send a message to your opponent like,
04:49hey, I'm not afraid to start serving, you know,
04:52start the match with this kind of a right statement.
05:00Sometimes I start slow and I lose my first service games
05:03and then you start to question your decision-making.
05:08But no, I still, regardless of that, I still feel like it's important.
05:13It's important for your own confidence
05:14and to send the message to your opponent as well.
05:17Of course, I mean, it's all different.
05:19I mean, I know Nadal, for example, would always choose to receive.
05:23So we're all different, I guess.
05:25It depends also on the surface, I think, a little bit.
05:28When I play with Rafa on clay, he would always choose to receive.
05:31But on the other surfaces, quicker than he would maybe vary,
05:34vary between the choices.
05:36Novak, congratulations.
05:39I may ask a question unrelated to today's match.
05:43It's about fake news.
05:44Top athletes are often victims of fake news.
05:46And there was a story that went viral in many countries,
05:49including Brazil, where I come from.
05:52This story says that you help out financially
05:55the janitor of your childhood school.
05:59I don't know if you are aware of this story.
06:00Some people say it's fake news.
06:03Some people say it's AI.
06:05Some people say it's authentic.
06:07I would like to know if it's true.
06:09And how do you deal with fake news?
06:12Do you try to ignore it,
06:13or do you try to do something about them?
06:15Okay, there's quite a few questions there in one question.
06:20I'll answer first the fake news.
06:24It's, I guess, the part of the media world we are living in today.
06:33It's, we're more, I guess, prone to see that happening
06:42in the last, whatever, 15 years
06:45with the development of the social media
06:48and kind of, it almost feels like
06:51whoever writes the news first
06:54gets the most credit or views
06:56rather than checking for the credibility of the source.
07:00or, so then obviously there's always a risk
07:04that if you haven't checked
07:05and you're just trying to rush to be the first one,
07:07then that it's fake.
07:11But I don't want to get too much
07:13into the story of the janitor.
07:16The only thing I can say is that I've been,
07:18yes, I've been financially helping my school.
07:22But that's the only thing.
07:23I'm not going to go into to whom personally
07:26or what or how much and stuff like this.
07:28I feel like that's, it's not a place
07:30or there's no reason to do that.
07:33But I try to support my school absolutely,
07:36you know, throughout my entire career.
07:40And Novak, you've spoken a lot about nutrition
07:43and that side of things.
07:44I just wondered over the last few years
07:46how that's evolved, how that changed at all.
07:49Has your body's changed
07:50or is it pretty consistent with what it was
07:52in terms of what you eat, what you drink,
07:53that sort of thing?
07:54It varies.
07:57There are certain things
07:58that I think stay the same
08:01when it comes to, you know,
08:03I guess fundamentals of the quality sleep,
08:05for example.
08:10You know, some of the calming
08:13or breathing techniques that I use.
08:15obviously the ice baths
08:22and cold immersions
08:23and cryo chambers, et cetera.
08:27It's something I've been using
08:28or hyperbaric chambers for a long time.
08:33But, you know,
08:35I don't have the access everywhere
08:38to everything that I would ideally want to.
08:40So I have to then adjust myself
08:42and then, you know,
08:43some tournaments there's this
08:44and the others there's something else.
08:47But essentially when it comes to food,
08:50yeah, I'm always basically looking
08:52and always curious
08:53and looking for the next super food
08:55or the next thing
08:58that can maybe improve my,
09:00yeah, recovery
09:01or whatever it is
09:03or the endurance
09:04or the strength
09:06or whatever it is, you know.
09:07So I'm always open-minded
09:09for these things.
09:10I'm very curious,
09:11always researching wellness space
09:14and well-being space
09:15is my greatest passion
09:18other than sport.
09:20So, you know,
09:21I look to also grow my presence
09:24and my brand in that area
09:26and starting some of,
09:28on my own,
09:29some of my startups
09:30and businesses
09:31and that's also exciting,
09:34you know,
09:34in the nutritional space,
09:36particularly in supplements.
09:37So it's saturated marketing.
09:40I mean,
09:40it's so many supplements
09:42and it's,
09:43you know,
09:43which one to take,
09:44you know,
09:44it's quite hard
09:45because we're all different
09:46and,
09:47but, you know,
09:49the science is improving
09:50so there's always something
09:51that you can kind of use
09:53as evidence
09:55to really go into that area.
09:57so I'm always really keen
09:59on finding out
10:00what's the next thing
10:01and, you know,
10:03there are some things
10:04that are kind of set in stone
10:07even when it comes to food
10:09that are important to follow
10:10because of the way
10:12the biology works
10:13but then there's also
10:15the new scientific research
10:17and study
10:18that comes up
10:18with some molecules
10:21or some ingredients
10:22that are,
10:23you know,
10:24greatly of a help
10:26to an athlete
10:27or whoever,
10:28you know,
10:29but us athletes,
10:30we are dependent
10:31on our bodies
10:32and how well we recover
10:34or prepare ourselves,
10:35particularly in individual sports
10:37so that's why I think
10:39it's very interesting
10:40for anyone
10:42that is not an athlete
10:43to look at athletes
10:44and how they,
10:44you know,
10:45conduct themselves
10:46in preparation
10:47and food,
10:48sleep,
10:48what's their regime
10:50and I think
10:51that you can always
10:52take something
10:52that can be very useful
10:53for, you know,
10:55for your life.
10:56Yes,
10:57now,
10:57like you said,
10:58it was very difficult
10:58to reach your hotel
11:00the overnight.
11:01Can you tell us
11:02a bit more
11:03about this trip?
11:06I want to thank
11:07the chief of security
11:08who is not here
11:08but he was amazing
11:10with his team.
11:12At one point,
11:12he was quite,
11:14people were quite tense
11:16here,
11:17I must say,
11:18for our return
11:18to the hotel.
11:19They were not suggesting
11:21us at one point
11:21to go back at home
11:22to maybe find a place
11:25to sleep somewhere
11:25around here
11:26for a night
11:27because at that point
11:30it was already
11:30past midnight
11:31and there were
11:32some gas bombs
11:33and, you know,
11:35cars under fire
11:38and stuff happening
11:39on the street
11:40that was really dangerous.
11:43So,
11:43understandably,
11:44and actually,
11:45everything around
11:45our hotel
11:46which is close
11:47to Art de Triomphe.
11:49So,
11:49yeah,
11:51in the end
11:52we talked,
11:53we waited for a bit
11:53and then we decided
11:54to go
11:55and it was fine.
11:56In the end,
11:56we reached the hotel
11:58all good
11:58but it was
12:01quite noisy
12:02with a lot of things
12:04happening
12:05outside of the hotel.
12:06so, you know,
12:09of course,
12:09it's interesting
12:09in some way
12:11to look
12:11from your window
12:12what's happening
12:13but at some point
12:14it was getting
12:15out of hand
12:17but it's understandable
12:19that people
12:20are so excited.
12:21You know,
12:21first time
12:22Champions League
12:22winners
12:23for this city.
12:24It's one of the most
12:25important cities
12:26in the world
12:26so,
12:27yeah,
12:29they're all
12:30celebrating.
12:31They still go.
12:32it's going to be
12:34several days
12:34I'm sure
12:35of celebration.
