00:00Today we're going to the Mexican border.
00:04We're going to go look for a rare plant that grows there, ornithostapalos,
00:08a.k.a. the Baja bird bush.
00:09It's one of the only places left in the United States where this thing grows.
00:14We want to pay homage to this ultra-rare native plant
00:17and see what they look like in the wild.
00:20So we just passed a sign that said authorized vehicles only.
00:24We're just a couple nice Catholic boys from Chicago
00:27down here looking for ornithostapalos, you know.
00:31Okay, this is good. Let's park here.
00:35I think it's fine. We're going to get stopped.
00:39Joey reaches out to local botanists who have GPS coordinates
00:42for where to find ornithostapalos, the Baja bird bush,
00:45in this area guarded by Border Patrol.
00:49Joey called his friend.
00:50A friend of mine who's a botanist down here
00:53who knows exactly where they are.
00:55There's some cool plants around there.
00:57Yeah, because we're going to get shut down and it sucks.
00:59You like cops?
01:00You like interacting with cops?
01:01No, we'll let you do that.
01:02Yeah, hey, hey.
01:04We're in Smuggler's Gulch.
01:08Do you know where that population is?
01:09We're on the mesa.
01:11Oh.
01:12On the flat.
01:13That would be west of us or east of us?
01:15I'm trying to find this coordinator.
01:17I really appreciate this.
01:19Yeah, she set us up on a mesa.
01:20The clock's ticking.
01:21BP's around.
01:22Border Patrol hidden security cameras.
01:24Hey, let's hustler.
01:25Let's see this plant.
01:28We're looking for a plant called Baja bird bush.
01:30And one of the botanists told me it's up on the mesa here.
01:35Oh, yeah, I see it.
01:36That one right there.
01:36You can take that one.
01:37Okay, cool.
01:38I can't believe we're not getting kicked out.
01:40All right, look.
01:41There's Mexico.
01:42Here we go.
01:43There's the Baja bird bush.
01:44There's ornithostaphylose opposite of folia.
01:48Now, if you're a knob with no imagination and no ecological context,
01:52no sense of ecological context, you'd see this.
01:54You'd say it looks like shit.
01:55That's because it hasn't gotten any rain in months.
01:57But if you have this in a garden, you can water it occasionally.
01:59We lit up.
02:00Now we've found our plan.
02:01Look at that.
02:02Feel it.
02:03So smooth.
02:04So there's people like planting crepe myrtles.
02:08And I hate crepe myrtles.
02:10But one of the reasons they like them is because of that smooth bark.
02:12Well, ornithostaphylose, the Baja bird bush, does the same thing.
02:17I'm just stoked we found the bird bush.
02:19And then we'll see you next week.
02:22Bye.
02:24Bye.
02:25Bye.
02:27Bye.
02:28Bye.
02:29Bye.
02:31Bye.
02:33Bye.
02:35Bye.
02:36Bye.
02:37Bye.
02:39Bye.
02:41Bye.
02:43Bye.
02:45Bye.
