00:00Story, another day, another Prince Harry sob story.
00:02This time it's been revealed by the Daily Mail that Harry planned on changing his surname.
00:08Charlotte Griffiths is with me here now, the editor-at-large of The Mail on Sunday.
00:11Charlotte, welcome along.
00:12My newspaper's a big scoop, if I may say so.
00:14So it was The Mail on Sunday, not The Mail.
00:15Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:16Sorry, apologies.
00:16Sorry to everyone at The Mail on Sunday.
00:18Tell us what's going on.
00:19What did he want to change his name to?
00:20Well, he wanted to change his name to Spencer.
00:23And he approached his uncle and he said, I want to drop the Mountbatten-Windsor name,
00:27which was the name given to him, well, he inherited it, really, from the Queen and Prince Philip.
00:31Yeah.
00:32And it means a lot to the royal family, that surname, but he, for some reason, wants to get rid of it.
00:38And he asked his uncle, and his uncle very wisely said, this is a terrible idea and it's legally fraught and just don't do it.
00:44So his uncle being Earl Spencer, Princess Diana's brother.
00:47Yeah, so his uncle is Princess Diana's brother.
00:50And he said, look, I feel like, I suppose he must have said, I feel like I'm more of a Spencer because I want to take your surname on.
00:54And he, you know, his uncle had to say, look, this is for the birds, this is madness.
00:59Do you think Meghan might have been behind that side there?
01:01Well, Tom Bauer was quoted today in The Mail on Sunday piece saying he thinks it's to do with Meghan wanting to be more closely associated with Princess Diana.
01:09I mean, it's speculation on Tom Bauer's part, but it does make sense because I can't think of another reason why you'd want to suddenly become a Spencer.
01:17You know, it's quite a serious title, Mountbatten-Windsor.
01:20It makes you very closely associated with the royal family.
01:22What could be better?
01:23Well, is it a sense of resentment against his father and the family more generally?
01:27Yeah, it could well be because it would really hurt his father's feelings because Mountbatten is taken from the first Earl of Burma and was given to Prince Philip.
01:34It meant a lot to Prince Philip.
01:35And then Windsor, obviously, from the Queen, they combine these surnames together.
01:39And it's Archie and Lilibet's surname.
01:41Now, Lilibet's full name is Lilibet, named after the Queen, Diana, named after Diana, Mountbatten-Windsor.
01:47If her surname was Spencer, it would become Lilibet Diana Spencer.
01:50So, one wonders whether she quite wanted her daughter to be sort of known as Diana Spencer, you know, the new Princess of Wales.
01:57That's quite chilling for me.
01:59Why does Megan, therefore, say that she's Sussex now?
02:02Well, that's the other thing.
02:03So, I think this is quite historic, but in her most recent series, her Netflix series, she said to Mindy Kaling, you know I'm Sussex now.
02:12And then she went on and said, oh, I want to have the same name as my children.
02:16But her children's surname isn't Sussex.
02:18It's Mountbatten-Windsor.
02:19So, the whole thing's a bit bizarre.
02:21I mean, the other thing is it could be something to do with marketing because they're not allowed to market the royal name.
02:26So, they tried to set up a website called Sussex Royal and they were told, no way, you can't be putting royal, you know, names on jams.
02:33So, I just wonder whether they were trying to angle for a Spencer brand or something?
02:38Spencer jams.
02:39Spencer jams.
02:40But, yeah, Tom Bowers' theory is, you know, Megan wants to be the new Diana and somehow it brought that family closer towards her.
02:47Oh, God, this woman's just having a constant never-ending identity crisis.
02:51One minute she doesn't want anything to do with the royals and wants to completely ruin their name and then the next minute she wants to be known as the Sussex.
02:57Her real name?
02:58Now she wants to be Diana.
02:59Her real name is Rachel, let's not forget.
03:01Yeah.
03:01So, she doesn't even actually...
03:02I didn't know that.
03:03Completely darling, the whole thing.
03:04Wasn't that also her character in Suits?
03:07I think it was.
03:07Oh, yeah.
03:08No, but she's known as Rachel.
03:09Her real name is Rachel.
03:10Yeah.
03:10I think Megan is her middle name.
03:11Yeah.
03:12Yeah, right.
03:13So, it's just bizarre.
03:14If I had the surname Mountbatten-Windsor, I'd be pretty impressed.
03:18It sounds very grand to me, but apparently not good enough.
