00:00Behind me you can see some of the mud muster volunteers.
00:06Now the difference here is that some of them are permanent SES volunteers.
00:10They're the ones with the orange trousers.
00:12And the ones with the orange vests are kind of like SES volunteers for the day.
00:16So they've had a safety induction briefing from the SES
00:19to make sure they know what they're doing in what is a very dangerous workspace.
00:23As they clear out houses, removing carpets, removing gyprock
00:27and of course these piles of debris which once were someone's treasured possessions
00:32and are now completely destroyed by mud.
00:34And we've spoken to people from all walks of life.
00:37We've got people who are tradies, people who are retirees
00:40who've told us about why they've come out today.
00:43I've come from Foster and my niece was affected by the floods in Taree in Pulteney Street.
00:49So last weekend I was there helping them and sort of, she's quite sorted at the moment.
00:56So I thought I'd volunteer today anyone else that needed help.
00:59I just feel sorry for everyone.
01:01And I'm retired.
01:02I'm a retired nurse.
01:03So I thought, ah, what can I do?
01:05I've been in and out all week.
01:07I've been to lots of the different spots at Cro-Kai and Glenfawn.
01:11Yeah, it's pretty devastating what's been going on.
01:14Just helping out I suppose.
01:15There's about five trucks, about nine or ten blokes out of the workshop helping out today.
01:20We've actually got another crew of boys out of the workshop tomorrow.
01:22So we'll work today.
01:23I think there's about eight or nine other blokes in the workshop tomorrow.
01:26Now understandably the people in these homes in Wingham are quite destroyed and devastated
01:32by what's happened.
01:33They've lost in many cases everything.
01:35We've spoken to a woman who lost half of her chickens.
01:39It's really hard for them to recover.
01:42Many of them went through a flood in 2021 and they've got to somehow find the energy to throw out more of their possessions
01:49and to turn this around and recover as the saying goes.
01:53The efforts of volunteers like this mudmaster army of volunteers means that they're also buoyed emotionally.
02:00These volunteers are giving out hugs pretty freely and certainly giving support and encouragement
02:05for people who are going through what is the worst time of their lives.
