00:00My dear friends, in a world that moves fast and judges quicker,
00:07we often find ourselves grasping for answers in places
00:11where the Bible has chosen to remain quiet.
00:15And one of those topics that has stirred conversation,
00:20confusion, and sometimes even condemnation,
00:24is the question of age gap relationships.
00:28People want a verse, a chapter, a direct command.
00:34But when we open the sacred pages of Scripture,
00:38we find something unexpected silence.
00:41Not endorsement, not prohibition, just silence.
00:45Now, let me say this clearly and with reverence.
00:50When the Bible is silent on a matter,
00:53it does not mean we are given license to do as we please.
00:59But neither does it mean we are to automatically condemn.
01:05Silence in Scripture is not an invitation to lawlessness,
01:09nor is it a stamp of disapproval.
01:12It is a call to wisdom.
01:15It is a call to prayer.
01:18It is a call to search not just the text,
01:21but the heart of God.
01:24Many people ask,
01:26if God didn't speak against it,
01:29doesn't that mean it's okay?
01:32Be careful.
01:33Because the absence of a thou shalt not
01:37is not the same as God's approval.
01:41Yet, we must also remember,
01:44just because there is no express command
01:47doesn't mean we are free to sit in judgment
01:51over others.
01:53The silence of Scripture invites us into discernment,
01:57not division.
01:59Into humility, not harshness.
02:02The Bible does not tell us,
02:05you shall not marry someone 20 years older than you.
02:10It also does not say,
02:13you shall.
02:15What it does give us is something
02:17even more powerful principles.
02:21And if we are people of the Word,
02:23we do not live by preferences, emotions, or culture.
02:28We live by the principles of God.
02:32You see,
02:33God is more interested
02:35in the condition of the heart
02:38than the details of the birth certificate.
02:41He is not counting years
02:43between a man and a woman.
02:46He is weighing hearts.
02:49He is measuring integrity.
02:51And He is searching for covenant faithfulness.
02:54The Lord said to Samuel,
02:57man looks at the outward appearance,
03:02but the low RD looks at the heart.
03:05The one Samuel 16, 7.
03:08That verse wasn't written about relationships,
03:11but it applies deeply.
03:13We must stop measuring relationships
03:17with tape measures and timelines.
03:20We must start examining relationships
03:22through the lens of love,
03:26truth, sacrifice,
03:28and spiritual alignment.
03:30If two people are unequally yoked,
03:33it is not the age difference that matters most.
03:36It is the spiritual gap,
03:40the moral distance,
03:42the lack of shared purpose.
03:45That's what will tear a relationship apart.
03:47And if we are honest,
03:51the world often makes judgments
03:53not based on righteousness,
03:56but based on appearances.
03:59The older man with a younger woman
04:01is labeled as predatory.
04:04The older woman with a younger man
04:06is mocked or dismissed.
04:09But God is not swayed by stereotypes.
04:13He is not moved by gossip columns
04:16or Twitter threads.
04:19He is looking for truth
04:21in the inward parts.
04:23Let us not mistake culture's loud
04:26opinions for God's quiet wisdom.
04:30Just because people are uncomfortable
04:32does not mean God is displeased.
04:36And just because people are supportive
04:38does not mean God is approving.
04:42Silence in Scripture pushes us
04:45to press into prayer,
04:47to seek godly counsel,
04:49to weigh every decision
04:51in the light of eternity.
04:54This is why we must ask ourselves
04:56deeper questions.
04:59Is this relationship born of selfish desire
05:02or mutual calling?
05:03Is it marked by manipulation
05:06or by mutual respect?
05:10Is it grounded in God's purpose
05:12or our own loneliness?
05:15These are not age questions.
05:18These are soul questions.
05:20And the Bible is not silent
05:22about the soul.
05:24So I urge you,
05:26do not build your life on silence.
05:29Build it on wisdom.
05:31Build it on the whole counsel of God.
05:33If you find yourself
05:36in an age gap relationship,
05:38don't ask first,
05:41what will people say?
05:43Ask,
05:44what does God require of me?
05:47And if you are not in one,
05:50do not judge what God
05:51has not condemned.
05:53Love truth.
05:55Walk humbly.
05:56And let the Holy Spirit speak
05:58where the text is still.
06:00When we speak of love and marriage,
06:04our minds often rush to the images
06:06we've grown familiar with.
06:09Young couples,
06:11close in age,
06:13walking hand in hand
06:14into a picture.
06:16Perfect future.
06:19But the Bible doesn't always
06:21follow the patterns we expect.
06:23In fact,
06:24when we open the Word of God
06:26and begin to look closely,
06:30we find something surprising.
06:32Age was not always
06:34a defining factor
06:35in God's plans for relationships.
06:39The Bible gives us real,
06:41raw,
06:42redemptive stories,
06:44some involving notable age gaps,
06:47that show us what God
06:49truly values in relationships.
06:52Let us start with Abraham and Sarah.
06:55The father and mother
06:57of our faith.
06:59Abraham was ten years older
07:01than Sarah,
07:03according to Genesis 17.017.
07:06Now that may not seem
07:07significant to some,
07:09but consider this.
07:11They began their journey
07:13of faith together
07:15later in life.
07:17They were well past
07:18the age of the world
07:20would call romantic prime.
07:23And yet God chose them
07:25to birth a nation.
07:27Not in their youth,
07:29but in their old age.
07:31The promise was not tied
07:33to their age difference.
07:36It was tied to their obedience.
07:39God didn't base His covenant
07:41on how many years
07:43separated them,
07:45but on the faith
07:47that united them.
07:48And what about Ruth and Boaz?
07:50Ruth, a young widow
07:52from Moab and Boaz,
07:55a respected and older man
07:57of Israel.
07:59Though Scripture does not
08:00give us exact ages,
08:02Boaz refers to Ruth's kindness
08:04in choosing Him
08:06over younger men.
08:08Ruth 3, Jude 10.
08:10This tells us something powerful.
08:13Boaz was older.
08:15Maybe significantly so.
08:17But Ruth saw something in Him
08:20that transcended age.
08:22She saw character.
08:24She saw kindness.
08:25She saw protection.
08:27And Boaz, in turn,
08:29saw her loyalty,
08:30her courage,
08:32and her willingness
08:34to leave everything behind
08:36to follow the God of Israel.
08:39Their union was not based
08:41on physical attraction alone,
08:43but on shared faith
08:45and purpose.
08:48And from that union
08:49came a lineage
08:50that led to King David
08:52and eventually
08:54to Jesus Christ Himself.
08:56We see age difference again
08:58when we look at David
08:59and Abigail.
09:02David was a young man
09:04on the run from Saul
09:06when he encountered Abigail,
09:08a wise and discerning woman
09:12married to a harsh
09:13and foolish man
09:15named Nabal.
09:16After Nabal's death,
09:19David took Abigail
09:20as his wife.
09:22Though their exact ages
09:24aren't spelled out,
09:26many scholars believe
09:27Abigail was older,
09:29given her position
09:30and the way she carried herself.
09:35What mattered to David
09:36was not her age,
09:38but her wisdom,
09:40her godliness,
09:42her grace under pressure.
09:43That's what drew him
09:45to her.
09:47There are other stories
09:48less direct,
09:49but still present.
09:52Think of Joseph and Mary.
09:54We often see nativity scenes
09:57that show them as teenagers.
10:00But tradition
10:01and historical context
10:03suggest that Joseph
10:05may have been older,
10:07possibly by several years.
10:09and yet God
10:11trusted this couple
10:12with the most sacred responsibility
10:15the world has ever known
10:18to raise his only begotten son.
10:22He did not look for the most
10:24age-compatible couple.
10:27He looked for the most faithful.
10:29And then,
10:30look to the Song of Solomon,
10:33a book rich with passion
10:35and intimacy,
10:37a celebration of love
10:38between a man
10:39and a woman.
10:41Though again,
10:42ages are not listed.
10:44Some interpretations
10:46suggest a contrast
10:47in maturity
10:48between the man
10:50and the woman.
10:52Yet the love
10:53expressed is mutual,
10:55respectful,
10:56and celebratory.
10:58Love in the Bible
10:59is not rigid.
11:01It is redemptive.
11:02What does all this tell us?
11:06It tells us that God
11:07has never been bound
11:08by man's expectations.
11:12He does not choose couples
11:14based on age proximity.
11:16He chooses based on calling
11:18purpose and heart.
11:21From patriarchs to peasants,
11:24from kings to carpenters,
11:26God has worked through relationships
11:28that would confuse
11:31the modern eye.
11:32But fulfill His eternal plan.
11:35So when we look at age differences
11:37in the Bible,
11:39we do not find a rule book,
11:42but a record.
11:44A record of how God
11:45moved through the unexpected.
11:48A record of how faith,
11:51loyalty,
11:52and obedience mattered
11:53more than birthdays.
11:55And perhaps that's the point.
11:59Perhaps God is reminding us
12:01that love
12:02when rooted in Him
12:04is not measured in years,
12:06but in fruit,
12:08in faith,
12:09and in faithfulness.
12:11When we talk about love,
12:13when we talk about marriage,
12:15when we talk about relationships
12:18that span across years,
12:20people will say,
12:22or even generations,
12:22the world immediately reaches
12:25for the measuring stick of age.
12:29People will say,
12:31she's too young,
12:33or he's too old,
12:35or that doesn't look right.
12:39But let me remind you
12:41of something eternal.
12:42God does not measure
12:44a person by the calendar.
12:46He measures them
12:47by the heart.
12:49In 1 Samuel 16,
12:509, 7,
12:51when the prophet Samuel
12:53was looking to anoint
12:54the next king of Israel,
12:57he stood before
12:58Jesse's sons.
13:01Strong men.
13:03Tall men.
13:04Men who looked like kings.
13:05But as Samuel
13:08lifted the horn of oil,
13:10the Lord interrupted him
13:12and said,
13:13do not consider
13:14his appearance
13:15or his height.
13:17For I have rejected him.
13:20The Lord does not look
13:22at the things
13:22people look at.
13:25People look at
13:26the outward appearance,
13:28but the Lord
13:29looks at the heart.
13:31And so it was
13:32that young David,
13:33just a shepherd boy
13:36was chosen.
13:38This is the heartbeat
13:39of heaven.
13:41God does not see
13:42as man sees
13:43while we obsess
13:44over outward traits,
13:47age, image,
13:49height, status.
13:51God searches
13:52the inner chambers
13:53of a person's soul.
13:56He is looking
13:56for humility,
13:58integrity,
13:59kindness,
14:00righteousness.
14:02He is looking
14:03for a heart
14:04that beats
14:04in rhythm
14:05with His will.
14:07When it comes
14:08to relationships,
14:10the same truth applies.
14:13We might look
14:14at a couple
14:14and think,
14:15they're not the same age,
14:17they don't fit.
14:19But God asks
14:21a different question.
14:24Is their love
14:25rooted in truth?
14:26Is their respect
14:28born of reverence?
14:30Is their unity
14:31forged by faith?
14:34Those are the things
14:35that matter
14:36to the Lord.
14:37Think of the Pharisees
14:39in Jesus' day.
14:41They were experts
14:42at judging people
14:44by appearances.
14:46They measured holiness
14:47by clothing,
14:49piety by posture,
14:51righteousness by ritual.
14:53And what did Jesus
14:55call them?
14:56Whitewashed tombs.
14:57clean on the outside,
15:01but full of decay
15:02on the inside.
15:03Jesus came
15:04to shatter
15:05the illusion
15:05that the outside
15:07matters more
15:08than the inside.
15:11Over and over again,
15:14He reminded us,
15:16it's the heart
15:17that reveals
15:18a person's
15:19true condition.
15:20So what does this mean
15:21for age gap relationships?
15:23It means we must ask
15:26the questions
15:27that God asks.
15:29Not how many years
15:30are between you,
15:33but is this relationship
15:35built on godly love?
15:38Not will society approve,
15:41but will heaven approve?
15:45Not do they look good together,
15:47but do they grow together
15:50in Christ?
15:51There are many people
15:54who are close in age,
15:56but far apart
15:57in maturity.
15:59Close in years,
16:01but distant in values.
16:03The number of candles
16:04on a birthday cake
16:05tells you very little
16:09about a person's character.
16:11And just because
16:12two people share
16:14a generation
16:15doesn't mean
16:17they share a vision.
16:19God is not impressed
16:20by age similarity.
16:23He is pleased
16:24by spiritual unity.
16:26And let's be honest,
16:29some of the most
16:30manipulative relationships
16:31have happened
16:33between people
16:34of the same age.
16:37Abuse, control, selfishness.
16:40Those are not issues of age.
16:43They are issues of the heart.
16:44And some of the most
16:46redemptive,
16:48God-honoring relationships
16:50have formed
16:52between people
16:53with a significant age gap.
16:55Not because of attraction alone,
16:58but because of calling,
17:01purpose,
17:02and mutual surrender
17:03to Christ.
17:04God is the author of love,
17:07and He never gets it wrong.
17:08His love for us
17:11is not based on time
17:13or youth
17:14or age.
17:16It's based on grace.
17:18And if we who are called
17:20to walk in His love
17:21are going to honor Him
17:23in our relationships,
17:25we must stop asking
17:27worldly questions
17:28and start seeking
17:30spiritual answers.
17:31So,
17:33whether you are
17:34younger or older,
17:36whether you are
17:37considering a relationship
17:39or walking in one now,
17:42the real issue
17:43is not how many
17:44birthdays you've had,
17:47it's how deeply
17:48your heart
17:49is anchored in God.
17:52Because the only relationship
17:54that will last
17:55through every storm,
17:58through every season,
17:59and into eternity
18:01is one built
18:03on the rock
18:04of God's truth,
18:05not the sand
18:06of human opinion.
18:09Let the world
18:10count the years.
18:12Let God weigh the heart.
18:14Because in the end,
18:16it is not your age
18:17that makes you
18:18ready to love.
18:20It is your surrender
18:22to the One
18:23who loved you first.
18:25We live in a time
18:27when relationships
18:28are guided
18:30more by emotion
18:31than conviction,
18:33more by feeling
18:35than by faith,
18:36and more by culture
18:37than by Christ.
18:39People are getting
18:40into relationships
18:41for the wrong reasons
18:44and building foundations
18:46on shifting sand.
18:49They're listening
18:50to social media,
18:52Hollywood,
18:53talk shows,
18:54and peer pressure.
18:56instead of opening
18:57the Word of God
18:58and seeking His voice.
19:01But let me say it plainly.
19:04If you're building
19:05your relationship
19:06on the ways
19:08of the world,
19:09you're building it
19:11to fall.
19:12In Proverbs 3,
19:13D5, 6,
19:15the Bible says,
19:17trust in the Lord
19:18with all your heart
19:20and lean not
19:21on your own
19:22understanding,
19:23in all your ways
19:25submit to Him
19:26and He will make
19:28your path straight.
19:30God has given us
19:32something better
19:33than feelings.
19:35He has given us
19:36wisdom
19:36and wisdom
19:37is not the same
19:38as knowledge.
19:40You can be educated
19:42and still
19:43make a mess
19:45of your life.
19:46You can have
19:47a thousand opinions
19:48but no direction.
19:51Wisdom
19:51is the ability
19:52to apply
19:53God's truth
19:54to real life
19:57choices.
19:58And nowhere
19:59is this more
20:00necessary
20:01than in relationships.
20:02When it comes
20:03to age gap
20:04relationships,
20:06the question
20:07we must ask
20:08is not
20:09what does
20:11the world
20:11think
20:12and the tapestry
20:13of human
20:14relationships.
20:15There is one
20:16thread
20:16that holds
20:18everything together
20:19intent
20:20and woven
20:22alongside it,
20:23the unbreakable
20:24cord of covenant.
20:26When it comes
20:27to love,
20:29especially
20:29relationships
20:30marked by
20:31differences
20:32like age
20:33gaps,
20:34what truly
20:35matters
20:35is not how
20:37far apart
20:38two birthdays
20:38fall,
20:40but the purpose
20:41behind the union
20:42and the solemn
20:44promises made
20:45before God
20:46and man.
20:47The Bible
20:48teaches us
20:49again
20:49and again
20:51that relationships
20:52are sacred.
20:54They are not
20:54merely social
20:55contracts
20:56or casual
20:58arrangements.
20:59They are
21:00covenants,
21:02holy agreements
21:03grounded in
21:04commitment,
21:05faithfulness,
21:06and mutual
21:07responsibility.
21:08When a man
21:10and a woman
21:11come together
21:12in God's sight,
21:14they step
21:14into a covenant
21:16relationship
21:17that demands
21:18more than
21:19feelings
21:20or convenience.
21:21It demands
21:22a deep intent
21:23to love,
21:24honor,
21:25and serve.
21:27Intent
21:28is the why
21:29behind the relationship.
21:31Are you coming
21:31together out
21:32of selfish desire,
21:34loneliness,
21:36or worldly
21:37convenience?
21:38Or are you
21:40coming together
21:40with the intent
21:42to glorify God,
21:44to build a family
21:45in His name,
21:47and to walk
21:48faithfully
21:50through life
21:50seasons
21:51side by side?
21:52This is the
21:53question
21:54that pierces
21:56through superficial
21:57attractions
21:58and reveals
22:00the heart's
22:01true motives.
22:02Look at the
22:03covenant God
22:04made with
22:05His people
22:05Israel.
22:06It wasn't
22:08a fleeting
22:09promise.
22:10It was an
22:11everlasting
22:11commitment.
22:13In the book
22:14of Hosea,
22:15God uses
22:16marriage
22:17as a picture
22:18of His covenant
22:19love for us.
22:21A love
22:22that is
22:23steadfast.
22:24Even when
22:25His people
22:25falter,
22:26I will betruth
22:27you to me
22:28forever.
22:29Hosea 2.19
22:30this is no
22:32casual love.
22:33This is
22:34covenant love.
22:36Intentional,
22:37faithful,
22:38enduring.
22:40When two
22:41people enter
22:41a relationship
22:42without a
22:42clear,
22:44God-honoring
22:45intent,
22:46they set
22:47themselves up
22:48for heartbreak
22:49and confusion.
22:51The years
22:52between them
22:52become distractions
22:54rather than
22:56opportunities.
22:57The world
22:57looks at the
22:58numbers.
23:00He's older.
23:01She's younger.
23:03And quickly
23:04assigns motives.
23:07He's after
23:07youth.
23:09She's after
23:09security.
23:11But these
23:12assumptions
23:13miss the
23:14core truth.
23:15What matters
23:16is the why
23:17and the
23:18what for.
23:19God calls
23:20us to
23:21something
23:21higher.
23:23To build
23:23relationships
23:24that reflect
23:26His covenantal
23:27faithfulness.
23:28The Apostle
23:29Paul writes
23:30in Ephesians
23:315 about
23:32the marriage
23:32relationship
23:33being a
23:34picture of
23:35Christ's
23:36love for
23:37the church.
23:39A love
23:40that is
23:41sacrificial,
23:42unconditional,
23:44and purposeful.
23:45when intent
23:47aligns with
23:48God's heart,
23:49age differences
23:50become insignificant.
23:52What matters
23:53is the
23:54covenantal
23:54bond that
23:56unites two
23:57hearts in
23:58Christ.
23:59Covenant
23:59is more
24:01than a
24:02promise spoken
24:02at an
24:03altar.
24:03It is a
24:04lifelong
24:05commitment to
24:06stand together
24:07through joy
24:07and sorrow,
24:10health and
24:10sickness,
24:12plenty and
24:13poverty.
24:13it means
24:15laying down
24:16selfish ambitions
24:17for the
24:17sake of
24:18the other.
24:20It means
24:20mutual respect,
24:23honor and
24:23responsibility.
24:25It means
24:26God is at
24:27the center
24:27and both
24:28partners submit
24:30to His
24:30leading.
24:32Without
24:32covenant,
24:34relationships
24:34become fragile.
24:37They can be
24:37torn apart by
24:38temptation,
24:39misunderstanding,
24:40or hardship.
24:41But with
24:43covenant,
24:44even the
24:45greatest
24:46challenges
24:46become
24:47opportunities
24:47for grace,
24:49growth,
24:50and deeper
24:51love.
24:52God is a
24:54covenant-keeping
24:54God,
24:55and He
24:56blesses those
24:57who honor
24:57their commitments
24:59in His name.
25:01Consider Abraham
25:02and Sarah.
25:04Their marriage
25:05was marked
25:06not only by
25:07years,
25:08but by
25:09covenant
25:09faithfulness,
25:10even when
25:11challenges
25:11arose.
25:13The delay
25:14of their
25:15promised son,
25:16the struggles
25:17of old age.
25:19They remained
25:20faithful to
25:21God's calling
25:22and to each
25:24other.
25:25Their union
25:25was not built
25:27on fleeting
25:27feelings,
25:29but on
25:30steadfast
25:30intent
25:31and covenant
25:32promise.
25:33The same
25:34goes for
25:34Ruth and
25:35Boaz.
25:36Their story
25:37is a
25:38beautiful
25:38illustration
25:39of God's
25:40providence
25:40in relationships
25:42grounded in
25:44respect,
25:45kindness,
25:46and covenantal
25:47responsibility.
25:49Boaz's intent
25:50was clear
25:51to protect
25:52Ruth,
25:53to redeem
25:54her,
25:55and to honor
25:55the family
25:56line.
25:57His love
25:58was not
25:59shallow or
26:00selfish.
26:00It was
26:02covenantal
26:03and intentional.
26:04As followers
26:05of Christ,
26:07we are called
26:08to mirror
26:08this kind
26:09of love.
26:11Age
26:11gaps,
26:12cultural
26:12differences,
26:14or societal
26:15expectations
26:16should never
26:16be the
26:17focus.
26:18Instead,
26:19we must
26:20fix our
26:20eyes on
26:21God's
26:22purpose
26:22for
26:22relationships,
26:25intentionality,
26:26and covenant.
26:28Are you
26:29willing to
26:29say,
26:30I choose
26:31you not
26:33because of
26:33convenience or
26:34appearances,
26:35but because I
26:37am committed
26:37to walk this
26:38journey with
26:39you before
26:40God?
26:42That is the
26:43question.
26:45When intent
26:45and covenant
26:46are present,
26:49relationships
26:49become a
26:51reflection of
26:52God's love
26:53to the world.
26:54They become
26:55a testimony
26:55of faithfulness,
26:57sacrifice,
26:57and grace.
26:59They become
27:00a sanctuary
27:01where two
27:03people grow
27:03together in
27:04holiness,
27:06supporting each
27:06other's spiritual
27:07walk.
27:09So,
27:10my dear
27:11friends,
27:12as you
27:13consider love
27:14and relationships,
27:15especially those
27:17that challenge
27:17cultural norms
27:18like age
27:19gaps,
27:21remember this,
27:22God's heart
27:23is focused on
27:25intent and
27:26covenant.
27:27He calls us
27:28to love with
27:29purpose,
27:30to commit with
27:32integrity,
27:33and to build
27:34with faithfulness.
27:35it is not the
27:38numbers that
27:39define the
27:39relationship.
27:41It is the
27:41nature of the
27:42promises made
27:43and the depth
27:45of the love
27:46that sustains
27:46them.
27:48Walk in this
27:49truth.
27:51Let your
27:51relationships be
27:52marked by clear
27:53intent,
27:55an unshakable
27:56covenant,
27:57and you will
27:58honor God in
27:59all you do.
28:00In every
28:01relationship,
28:02but especially
28:03those marked
28:04by significant
28:05differences,
28:07whether age,
28:09status,
28:09or experience,
28:11there is a
28:12risk,
28:13a risk that
28:14one person
28:15may hold
28:16power over
28:17the other
28:17in ways that
28:18can lead to
28:19harm,
28:20manipulation,
28:22or injustice.
28:23This is why
28:25the Bible's
28:25wisdom
28:26calls us
28:28to guard
28:28carefully
28:29against power
28:30imbalances,
28:31to walk
28:32humbly
28:33and justly
28:34in love,
28:34and to
28:36honor the
28:36dignity of
28:37every human
28:38soul made
28:39in God's
28:40image.
28:41Power imbalances
28:42in relationships
28:43are not new.
28:46They have
28:47existed since
28:48the fall of
28:48man when
28:50sin introduced
28:51selfishness,
28:53pride,
28:54and domination
28:55into the human
28:56heart.
28:56The Bible
28:57warns us
28:57clearly about
28:59the dangers
28:59of exploiting
29:01others,
29:02about abusing
29:04authority,
29:04and about the
29:06destructive nature
29:07of control.
29:09It calls
29:10instead for
29:11relationships
29:11rooted in
29:13mutual respect,
29:15love,
29:15and servant
29:16heartedness.
29:18In the context
29:19of age gap
29:20relationships,
29:22this call
29:23becomes even
29:24more urgent.
29:25when there
29:26is a large
29:27difference in
29:28years,
29:29there can
29:30sometimes be
29:31a natural
29:31difference in
29:32experience,
29:34maturity,
29:35and social
29:36standing.
29:37While these
29:39differences can
29:39be blessings,
29:42offering wisdom,
29:43protection,
29:44and care,
29:46they can also
29:47be dangerous
29:47if one
29:49partner uses
29:50them to
29:50control or
29:51manipulate the
29:51other.
29:52The Apostle
29:54Paul,
29:55in his
29:55letters,
29:56gives us a
29:57picture of
29:58what God
29:59desires in
30:00relationships
30:01humility,
30:03equality,
30:04and love
30:04that serves
30:05rather than
30:05rules.
30:07In
30:07Philippians
30:082 and 3
30:084,
30:09he writes,
30:11do nothing
30:11out of
30:12selfish ambition
30:13or vain
30:14conceit.
30:16Rather,
30:17in humility
30:18value others
30:19above yourselves,
30:20not looking
30:21to your
30:22own
30:22interests,
30:24but each
30:25of you
30:25to the
30:25interests
30:26of the
30:26others.
30:28This is
30:29not simply
30:30good advice.
30:32It is a
30:33divine mandate
30:34for how
30:35every
30:36relationship
30:36should
30:37function.
30:38When one
30:39person wields
30:40power without
30:41love,
30:42it becomes
30:43oppression.
30:44When authority
30:45is used for
30:46control rather
30:47than care,
30:49it becomes
30:50bondage.
30:50but when
30:51power is
30:52balanced by
30:53humility and
30:54selflessness,
30:55it becomes
30:56strength.
30:59The difference
30:59is the
31:00heart.
31:01The Bible
31:01provides many
31:02examples of
31:03leaders who
31:04abused their
31:05power and
31:06faced God's
31:07judgment.
31:09King Saul,
31:10who acted
31:11out of pride
31:12and selfishness,
31:14lost God's
31:15favor.
31:15Pharaoh,
31:17who oppressed
31:18the Israelites,
31:20was brought
31:21low.
31:21These stories
31:22remind us that
31:23power without
31:25accountability is
31:26dangerous,
31:27even deadly.
31:29In age-gap
31:31relationships,
31:32the greater
31:33life experience
31:34of one
31:35partner must
31:37not be a
31:37tool for
31:38domination.
31:39It must
31:40be a
31:40source of
31:41wisdom and
31:41guidance
31:42offered with
31:45gentleness and
31:46respect.
31:47Ephesians 5
31:48teaches husbands
31:49to love their
31:50wives as Christ
31:52loved the
31:52church, a
31:54love marked by
31:55sacrifice, not
31:57control.
31:59Likewise, wives
32:01are called to
32:01respect their
32:02husbands, but
32:04never to submit to
32:05abuse or
32:06manipulation.
32:06mutual submission
32:08grounded in
32:10reverence for
32:11Christ is the
32:13key to healthy
32:14relationships.
32:15Each partner
32:16must guard their
32:17own heart against
32:19pride, jealousy,
32:21or selfishness.
32:23Each must seek
32:24the good of the
32:25other above
32:25personal gain.
32:28This balance
32:29requires prayer,
32:31accountability,
32:33and the counsel
32:34of wise
32:35believers.
32:35furthermore, the
32:39Bible exhorts us to
32:40protect the
32:41vulnerable.
32:42James 127
32:44reminds us that
32:46pure religion is
32:47to look after
32:48orphans and
32:48widows in their
32:49distress.
32:50While this is a
32:52specific call, it
32:54echoes the greater
32:55principle that God
32:56is concerned for
32:59those who might be
33:00exploited or taken
33:02advantage of.
33:03When one partner is
33:05younger or less
33:06experienced, the
33:09older partner has a
33:10responsibility to
33:11protect, to
33:13nurture, and
33:14never to
33:15exploit.
33:16Power imbalances
33:17can also manifest in
33:20emotional or
33:21financial control.
33:23The Bible's
33:24teachings on
33:24stewardship and
33:26honesty should guide
33:28couples to
33:29transparency and
33:31fairness.
33:32Proverbs 11
33:32says, the Lord
33:35detests
33:35dishonest scales,
33:38reminding us that
33:39integrity must
33:40govern all
33:41dealings, whether
33:43business, family, or
33:45relationships.
33:47The church
33:48community also plays
33:49a vital role in
33:51guarding against
33:51abuse.
33:53Wise counsel,
33:55accountability, and
33:58open communication
33:59can help prevent
34:01unhealthy dynamics
34:02from taking root.
34:04When relationships
34:05are hidden or
34:06secretive, the
34:08risk of power being
34:09misused increases.
34:12But in the light of
34:13community and truth,
34:15love can flourish in
34:16freedom and joy.
34:18So, my brothers and
34:21sisters, as you walk
34:23the path of love and
34:25commitment, especially
34:27where differences in age
34:29or experience exist.
34:31Remember this, guard your
34:34hearts and guard each
34:35other.
34:36Power, when surrendered
34:39to God and wielded in
34:40love, can build up
34:42rather than tear down.
34:45But unchecked power,
34:47rooted in pride or
34:48selfishness, destroys.
34:50Let the Spirit of God
34:52guide every step.
34:55Let humility and service
34:57be your foundation.
34:59And may your
35:00relationships reflect the
35:02heart of Christ, the
35:05servant king who gave
35:06himself for us all.
35:08This is not just a
35:09caution.
35:10It is a call to
35:12holiness, justice, and
35:14love.
35:15And when we heed it, we
35:17honor God, protect the
35:19vulnerable, and walk in
35:21the fullness of his
35:22grace.
35:23grace.
