If you think you can't make art, you can.
00:10
There is no rule. There are no rules.
00:20
I'm an artist and day and night I live it, I eat it, I sleep it, I dream it.
00:25
I am an artist. A crazy one, but that's what I am.
00:30
I'm Sue Kreitzman, I'm 81 1⁄2 years old, getting older every minute.
00:54
I was always told that I was very bad at art.
01:00
I used to be a cookbook author, wrote 27 cookbooks, cooked on television,
01:05
traveled all over the world cooking for people, you know, in cooking theaters.
01:09
But then at 58 I was sitting at a table, correcting the proofs of my 27th cookbook.
01:16
I picked up a marker and my hand drew a mermaid on a piece of paper.
01:20
It was like this kind of folk art mermaid with a fish as a hat and snakes.
01:24
And I never did such a thing in my life.
01:27
From that moment on, I was a different person.
01:31
I was an artist.
01:32
And I became obsessed with drawing.
01:34
Absolutely obsessed.
01:36
Never wrote another cookbook.
01:38
How would you describe your art?
01:52
How do I describe my art?
01:54
I guess I'm what's called an outsider artist.
01:56
And that means working way outside the margins of the regular art world which is fine with me.
02:02
And because I had my big career, I'm not interested in selling.
02:06
I'm making my art for myself.
02:08
And when other people like it, I'm delighted.
02:17
My art is very shamanistic.
02:20
In many ways it's very childish.
02:22
It's very, very, very colorful.
02:25
I'm an assemblage artist.
02:27
I assemble.
02:28
I love junk.
02:29
That's why every week I go to the flea market.
02:31
Oh my god, I love junk.
02:32
And I love taking detritus.
02:34
It's almost like being an archaeologist.
02:36
And my art is about the female landscape.
02:38
It's always about women.
02:44
This is where I work.
02:46
It's a great big shed.
02:47
It's full of my materials.
02:49
And right now I'm working on several of my found object sculptures.
02:54
They're essentially anthropomorphic memory jugs.
02:57
And always have a female theme.
03:00
And they tell stories.
03:01
They tell stories about femininity and also my personal mythology.
03:05
And this is going to be about the goddess phone.
03:09
And here is the goddess phone.
03:12
You dial any goddess you want.
03:15
And the goddess will answer.
03:20
Does my art have a mission?
03:23
You know, if I'm an outsider artist, I'm doing it for the sheer visceral joy of doing it.
03:28
Without love in your heart.
03:30
Without my own.
03:32
Without love by your side.
03:34
Without my own.
03:36
When you're an outsider artist like me, and many people I know, the art does not come from your head.
03:42
There's no planning.
03:43
It doesn't come from the heart.
03:45
It comes from the gut.
03:46
And then suddenly it just is.
03:48
It almost makes it so.
03:49
Some people walk through this light.
03:52
Not on their feet but on their face.
03:57
When I first burst into art, I didn't tell most of my friends.
04:01
And at that time, I didn't have that weird and colorful artistic group of friends that I have now.
04:06
I had fairly, I don't want to say ordinary because they were nice people.
04:10
But damn it, they were fairly ordinary.
04:12
And I didn't even tell them.
04:14
My family, yes, they were gobsmacked.
04:18
You know, what happened to mother?
04:20
My family were very supportive.
04:22
And my husband thinks something else.
04:23
He said, this is better than Picasso.
04:25
I said, well honey, I don't know if we'd go that far.
04:28
Thank you.
04:29
Tell me what you do.
04:31
Tell me what you do.
04:34
And I'm living a dream right now.
04:36
I really am because all my friends are artists.
04:38
We believe in color.
04:39
Most of us are outsider artists.
04:41
So our work is wild and bold and often very crazy.
04:45
And yes, it's a dream come true.
04:48
Without love in your heart.
04:50
Without love by your side.
04:54
Without love playing part.
04:58
Tell me what you do.
05:01
Tell me what you do.
05:03
Tell me what you do.
