00:00:00Out from their final moments of privacy into the full public gaze
00:00:07Sheppard United followers stealing themselves for another playoff occasion
00:00:11The pain of the past never far from the surface
00:00:14But the players focus firmly on the present
00:00:24Out into the daylight they come
00:00:30Sunderland, like Sheppard United, endured a run of seven successive defeats at the National Stadium
00:00:36But now it's a source of great memories as they seek a third triumph in a row
00:00:45And they are definitely ready to go
00:00:53Well, just about everywhere you've looked across the capital
00:00:57Over the course of the last 48 hours, you will not have been far from a Sunderland supporter
00:01:04Will they win the battle on the terraces or in the stands, in the pubs and clubs
00:01:10Across the land, the battle on the pitch of course
00:01:15Nothing they can control
00:01:17The familiar face of Rick Parry
00:01:20Leading the presentation party, the chair of the EFL
00:01:24Followed by Dan Colton, the MD of Sky Bet
00:01:38Sheppard United, 14 points clear of Sunderland during the course of the regular season
00:01:43Indeed, in terms of points, actually one on the pitch
00:01:4616 really, because they started two behind everybody else
00:01:53Dan Colton, the MD of Sky Bet
00:01:59And the British in different attire for the big occasion
00:02:08Dan Neal, with the privilege of being a local boy leading Sunderland out at Wembley
00:02:12He's only got as far as the bench before at this great arena
00:02:17But today he'll be right in the thick of it
00:02:24Dave Shields providing the interpretation in British Sign Language
00:02:30Chris Wilder steps away to his workplace
00:02:35And lets his 11 through all the talk of Sunderland's youth
00:02:39Which is not exactly chock full of veterans themselves
00:02:44To get down to business
00:02:54Well, Michael Cooper is the Sheppard United player of the year
00:02:58He starts in goal, Hamza Chowdhury, an FA Cup winner with Leicester
00:03:02The centre-back pairing, the only two who remain from the Blades' last visit here
00:03:06In the 2023 FA Cup semi-final
00:03:09Harrison Burrows was twice a Wembley goalscorer with Peterborough last season
00:03:15Brian Brewster gets the nod on the right
00:03:18He's been here with Liverpool before
00:03:20It's the second playoff final for the Championship's player of the year, Gus Harmer
00:03:24Seeking a different outcome though
00:03:27Tyrese Campbell joins Kepa Moore in the attack
00:03:32Ches Raksaki and Alfie Gilchrist miss out on a place in the squad
00:03:36With Ben Britten, Diaz returning
00:03:38Heartbreak for Callum O'Hare, so often a starter
00:03:41But goals in both legs of the semi-final as a substitute
00:03:44It is the same XI that began the playoff journey at Bristol on May the 8th
00:03:51Local boy Anthony Patterson started here in their last playoff win over Wycombe
00:03:57As did Denis Sirkin and Luko Nine in that back four
00:04:01Dan Ballard, the dramatic semi-final hero
00:04:04Few surprises ahead of the back four
00:04:07Though certainly not here, Dan Neil, the captain, and Joe Bellingham play here for the first time
00:04:12Joe Bellingham's only experienced it before in video games
00:04:15Chris Rigg becomes their youngest second-tier finalist ever
00:04:19Enzo Le Fay and Romain Mundel start together for the first time
00:04:23Mundel hamstrung sadly for much of the season
00:04:26A set-up inspired by the way they finished against Coventry
00:04:29With Eliza Maienda up top, a semi-final scorer in that first leg at Coventry
00:04:35As was Wilson Isidor, who drops to the bench along with Patrick Roberts
00:04:40With an average age of 23 years and 101 days
00:04:44It's the youngest ever line-up to start a second-tier playoff final
00:04:49And to the Wembley big screen for a very important message from a former Sheffield United player, Vinnie Jones
00:04:57Sky Bet! Sky Bet!
00:05:03Sky Bet! Sky Bet!
00:05:09Sky Bet! Sky Bet!
00:05:15And this to raise awareness of Sky Bet and the British Heart Foundation's Every Minute Matters campaign
00:05:22Which has already seen over 300,000 people learn CPR
00:05:29It takes just 15 minutes via the British Heart Foundation's Reviver tool
00:05:38Remember, when a life is on the line, every minute matters
00:05:44Sky Bet! Sky Bet!
00:05:51Sky Bet! Sky Bet!
00:05:58And he has a comfortable seat
00:06:01And I will call that striking attire
00:06:05Well what a prospect
00:06:09You will have gathered that Sunderland are in the white
00:06:13Sheffield United getting the choice by dint of their higher league position
00:06:18In terms of team colours and unsurprisingly have gone for the traditional stripes
00:06:24Well it's been a challenging season but a remarkable season
00:06:38The searing standard set at the top
00:06:42Beyond anything we've seen recently
00:06:45Burnley and Leeds both racking up 100 points
00:06:48Sheffield United 192 on the pitch
00:06:5190 their final total
00:06:53Yet that's still not enough for automatic promotion
00:06:57Sunderland very much challenges in that regard in the first half of the season
00:07:02As Dan Neal issues that final rallying cry
00:07:06They've been in an almost unique position for the last 2-3 months of the season
00:07:11Knowing that they were a playoff team
00:07:14With that prospect in the back and sometimes very much at the front of their minds
00:07:19Despite continuing in championship combat
00:07:23Their lack of momentum towards the end of the league season
00:07:27Ultimately in the semi-final at least
00:07:31Not counting for anything
00:07:35And so we gather under the famous arch
00:07:40We turn the page to write the final chapter
00:07:43Match number 557
00:07:46In this season's championship story
00:07:49The one under the harsh glare of the global spotlight
00:07:54Don Goodman your early thoughts
00:07:56Yeah well look I was curious about team selection, formation
00:08:01But the biggest tool of all out there in these occasions
00:08:06Is your emotions and how you control them
00:08:09Well an immediate pressure coming the way of Anthony Patterson
00:08:15In the Sunderland goal and Tyrese Campbell providing that challenge
00:08:26There's Ahmed Hodjic and Hamza Chaudhry
00:08:29Signed to add physicality to their midfield
00:08:34But has emerged at the end of the season
00:08:38As the best of their right back options
00:08:40Which has been a problem position for them throughout the campaign
00:08:46Gifted by Hulme to Harmer
00:08:48A searching ball for Moore to fight Moore
00:08:51Remarkable save by Patterson
00:08:56I have to say it's been a very very nervy start by Sunderland
00:09:00They've already given the ball away at least three times in the opening minute
00:09:04And they nearly paid the price
00:09:05You spoke about Coventry wanting to get crosses in
00:09:07Well Gus Harmer very early ball in
00:09:10Kiefer Moore it's a brilliant effort
00:09:13But it's an even better save by Anthony Patterson
00:09:17Yeah the ball is virtually behind the goalkeeper
00:09:19How he calls that out is extraordinary
00:09:21But Gus Harmer the time and space he's given to deliver the cross
00:09:24Is criminal, the goalkeeper has really saved his team there
00:09:28Kiefer Moore I bet he can't believe he hasn't scored
00:09:31Wembley a stage synonymous with Sunderland goalkeeping heroics
00:09:35And that moment from Anthony Patterson right up there
00:09:39Yeah it's an incredible save
00:09:43Jim Montgomery had a stand named after him recently didn't he
00:09:46Not sure he's at that level yet
00:09:48But this is an incredible goal saving stop from Anthony Patterson
00:09:55I think it's the timing of the save
00:09:57A bouncing ball
00:09:58And to judge where that ball is going to bounce
00:10:00And then get your hand on it
00:10:02You know it's incredible athleticism
00:10:04His positioning enables him to get across and make the save
00:10:07But it's just how quickly he reacts to keep that out
00:10:09Extraordinary save
00:10:12And while Luko 9 is down
00:10:16A player who almost above anybody sums up the Sunderland spirit
00:10:22Well it's painful for him
00:10:24And very very worrying for him
00:10:28The delay may help Sunderland get their heads together
00:10:31But they do not want one of their wisest and cleverest heads
00:10:36To disappear from the stage this early
00:10:40Yeah Patterson has saved Sunderland there Don
00:10:42But again you can't be surprised the fact Gus Harmer gets it out of his feet
00:10:45Delivers a cross we saw against Coventry
00:10:47They peppered Sunderland with crosses
00:10:49Clearly Sheffield United are going to do the same aren't they
00:10:51Well I mean it's an obvious tactic
00:10:53Dan Ballard was a superstar in those playoffs in both legs
00:10:57Got his head on so many
00:11:00But you have to say Kiefer Moore is a much different proposition aerially
00:11:05Than Haji Wright
00:11:06And we're going to see here why
00:11:09Gets up early
00:11:12That's a great header but 09 just holds his shoulder there
00:11:15As there's contact between the two of them
00:11:18It's interesting though Kiefer Moore actually getting in between
00:11:20Circuit and 09 getting away from Dan Ballard
00:11:23So again maybe that's going to be a tactic
00:11:25He's got a big focal point, big target man
00:11:27Who's not going to play up against Ballard
00:11:29And you see 09 has taken one for the team
00:11:35Well he's a player who
00:11:38When he appears to be hurt you know he really is hurt
00:11:41100%
00:11:43This would be a huge blow for him
00:11:46If Luke 09 is unable to continue
00:11:51Lebris looking on very concerned
00:11:55About the state of one of Sunderland's biggest leaders
00:12:01I know he's a bit of a mischief maker
00:12:03A bit of a wind-up merchant
00:12:04But that disguises in some eyes
00:12:08His huge contribution to the Sunderland cause as a player
00:12:13And as a distributor of the ball as well
00:12:17Yeah Luke 09 is a talented individual
00:12:19But he's played a lot of games at Wembley
00:12:21He's played a lot of play-off matches
00:12:22I think the most for Sunderland
00:12:23So again if experience is all important
00:12:25Then you need Luke 09 out there
00:12:27When you're looking at the movement on the bench
00:12:29They've got a brilliant replacement in Chris Meppin
00:12:31Fortunately for them
00:12:32But that movement on that Sunderland bench
00:12:35Is an indicator that the afternoon may be over for Luke 09 here
00:12:39And that is tragic for Sunderland
00:12:42Well he is extending his own club record today
00:12:51By being out there Luke 09
00:12:53Appearing at Wembley Stadium in Sunderland colours
00:12:57For the fifth time
00:13:01And appreciating the administering of oxygen
00:13:09He's played as a full-back here in midfield
00:13:12Here and as a centre-back
00:13:19Seemingly very very difficult for him to continue
00:13:23Well he's not even running
00:13:24He's not jumping
00:13:25He's not barely moving
00:13:26And you can see the agony etched on his face
00:13:38So Chris Meppin
00:13:50Immediately adds the experience of 61 Premier League appearances
00:13:55To a team that has none between them otherwise
00:14:02He's a more than capable replacement
00:14:06Again you want your characters, your leaders
00:14:08You have very good players out there
00:14:10So for Sunderland to lose Luke 09
00:14:12That is a major blow
00:14:22Half minute delay
00:14:26Will get to hold of it
00:14:28Dan Neal will have to operate as an emergency central defender
00:14:35On rare occasions in the way Sunderland operate
00:14:38That he does often step between two centre-backs anyway
00:14:41So he's not a complete fish out of water
00:14:46Here is Harmer again
00:14:47And that's a lovely ball potential for Burrows here
00:14:51And Harmer coming in
00:14:56And Mundell manages to hook it to relative safety
00:14:59It's been the worst possible start
00:15:01With the exception of conceding a goal for Sunderland
00:15:03They literally have not seen any of the ball
00:15:05They've given it away when they've had it
00:15:07And they look really rattled here
00:15:09Yeah they're really getting over on first occasion
00:15:11That Harrison Burrows stepping forward from left back
00:15:13Gus Harmer getting on the ball
00:15:14The angle, the way in the forward pass to Burrows
00:15:16Was outstanding, the cross was good too
00:15:18Campbell's ball escaping the clutches of Gus Harmer
00:15:24In normal circumstances in a championship game
00:15:26You'd be anticipating the flag would go up
00:15:28But we do have VAR today so they waited
00:15:31Yeah, but I think in incidents like that
00:15:33Just get the flag up really
00:15:35And I know that they're told not to
00:15:36So I don't hold the assistant referee responsible at all
00:15:40But we saw a terrible injury to Tayo Awonyi, didn't we?
00:15:46Because we played on
00:15:47We're talking about agony
00:15:49There it is
00:15:51Wish him well
00:15:53Well, one's misfortune is another's opportunity
00:15:56Yeah, Chris Betham has got to get to the pace of the game very quickly
00:15:59It's pretty obvious with Tyrese Campbell up there
00:16:01With Kiefer Moore up there
00:16:02Already we've seen it in the opening, what?
00:16:03Eight, nine minutes
00:16:04Lots of crosses, lots of forward balls
00:16:06To that physical front too
00:16:07So, Betham Ballard
00:16:09Will have to dig deep here
00:16:11Stick together as a pair
00:16:12And try and control those two strong centre forwards
00:16:15Well I followed Chris Betham's career
00:16:17And I honestly think this has been one of his best ever seasons
00:16:20He's been brilliant
00:16:21And maybe desperately would have felt unlucky
00:16:24Not to be a part of that playoff semi-final
00:16:27From the start
00:16:29Remarkably, he brings the average age of this Sunderland team down still further
00:16:36Despite all his experience
00:16:41Ball by Circuit
00:16:44And on by Peck
00:16:46Palmer onto it quick as a flash
00:16:50Operating from the left
00:16:52That's the operative description here
00:16:55Pop-up
00:16:59In various places
00:17:01As the afternoon progresses
00:17:08Malcolm getting a good feel of the ball
00:17:13That's what Sunderland really need
00:17:15Just some possession
00:17:16Get a foothold in the game
00:17:18First ten minutes they've been forced back
00:17:20In the second best
00:17:25Dan Neil on the ground
00:17:28Coming together with Vinny Souza
00:17:33Here's Hume
00:17:36Now Harmer
00:17:38Just by his standards
00:17:41A very heavy touch indeed
00:17:42Rigg battling strongly
00:17:48And the Sunderland fans rising
00:17:51And acknowledging that
00:17:53Display of fierce commitment from their players
00:17:58They're going to need more of that
00:18:01To get through with the prize that they crave
00:18:05I have to say it's been a really strong start by Sheffield United
00:18:10And again Moore is the target
00:18:12A new foe
00:18:15Ballard
00:18:19Having a couple of thoughts there before taking decisive action
00:18:22The header from Kiefer Moore is a good one
00:18:24But his movement
00:18:25I think this is underrated about Kiefer Moore
00:18:26He's very mobile
00:18:28He's chopping and changing his position
00:18:29He's dropping deep
00:18:30He's running beyond
00:18:31He's running away from centre-halves
00:18:32So he's getting himself in a position
00:18:34To get his head on the ball
00:18:35He's also making it so difficult for defenders
00:18:37Because he's not standing still and waiting for the ball
00:18:39He's on the move
00:18:42I think he's won three out of three
00:18:43Or even four out of four headers
00:18:46In these opening exchanges
00:18:50Angelo Le Fay and Chris Rigg
00:18:52Having fleeting opportunities to show their talents there
00:18:56Look at Vinny Souza there
00:18:57He's done that all season long
00:18:58He's just that defensive insurance in midfield
00:19:00Snaps into the challenge
00:19:01There's a chance for Sunderland to break
00:19:03And Vinny Souza just stops it at source
00:19:15Rigg
00:19:16Arrows quickly on the scene
00:19:21A terrific day at Wembley
00:19:24Last season
00:19:25But his luck
00:19:27Previously in the playoffs
00:19:29Has not been too good
00:19:32With Peter Brett
00:19:33Two successive semi-final losses
00:19:35And that one I'm sure you'll recall
00:19:38Here's Brett
00:19:39At Sheffield Wednesday
00:19:40The greatest comeback of all time
00:19:42Came off at half-time in that one
00:19:46Look at the two Sunderland wide players
00:19:48Chris Rigg and
00:19:49Rene Mondal
00:19:51Hopefully Rigg's going to have to do a lot more work
00:19:53Tracking back
00:19:54As Harrison Burroughs loves to step forward from left-back
00:19:56Mondal has been a little bit higher and wider
00:19:58Because Hamza Choudhury at right-back for Sheffield United
00:20:00He won't step forward as often
00:20:03As Harrison Burroughs will
00:20:07Neal
00:20:10Mepham for Sunderland
00:20:12Sirkin
00:20:15Harried well by Brewster
00:20:16And now Choudhury joins in
00:20:19And he's keeping Sirkin honest here
00:20:21But he has committed a foul
00:20:26And the assistant referee is the closest
00:20:29To that
00:20:30Has the best view
00:20:31But just look at the efforts
00:20:33Hamza Choudhury makes that tackle
00:20:35Really around the halfway line
00:20:37Doesn't get the ball
00:20:38It is a foul
00:20:39But the endeavour
00:20:40Appreciated by
00:20:41Sheffield United's fans
00:20:43A really strong start from Sheffield United
00:20:45On the ball
00:20:46Fairly direct
00:20:47But accurate with those longer forward balls
00:20:49Very aggressive
00:20:50Off the ball
00:20:51So he'll be pleased with the start
00:20:53He'll be disappointed they're not leading
00:21:03Completely taken in by Joe Bellingham
00:21:08You do wonder for
00:21:11More than one or two in this Sunderland line-up
00:21:13Whether today represents
00:21:16A real fork in the road
00:21:21Maybe
00:21:22Mr Bellingham already knows what's next for him
00:21:28A prize of acclaim for
00:21:29Super Cooper
00:21:30As the
00:21:32Sheffield United supporters no doubt know him
00:21:35Painful previous
00:21:36Official visit to Wembley with Plymouth
00:21:38When he sat in the stands injured
00:21:39And watched his team lose 4-0 to Bolton
00:21:41In the AFL Trophy Final
00:21:46Brewster's head
00:21:48Peck
00:21:50Mepham
00:21:51With an uncertain moment
00:21:55That's Peck
00:22:00Now Brewster
00:22:03Floundering there
00:22:06Is Joe Bellingham
00:22:11Winning the opening exchanges
00:22:12That's for sure
00:22:13With the ball
00:22:14Without the ball
00:22:15Dueling
00:22:16They're winning everything at the moment
00:22:17Sheffield United
00:22:18And that's
00:22:19A worry
00:22:20For Sunderland
00:22:22You see that forward ball from Michael Cooper
00:22:24Again keep him in his position
00:22:25He's actually
00:22:26Attached himself to
00:22:27The left-back
00:22:28In his circle
00:22:29He's getting away from centre-halves
00:22:30He's moving into positions where he can
00:22:32You know win that
00:22:33That first forward ball
00:22:34That first header
00:22:44Three
00:22:45Four
00:22:46Five
00:22:47Six
00:22:48Seven
00:22:49Eight
00:22:50Nine
00:22:51Ten
00:22:5311
00:22:5412
00:22:5513
00:22:5614
00:22:5715
00:22:5816
00:22:5917
00:23:0018
00:23:0119
00:23:0220
00:23:0321
00:23:0422
00:23:0523
00:23:0624

00:23:13Here's Robinson, Burrows.
00:23:28Well, that's the positive start illustrated in which areas of the pitch this game has been played.
00:23:39Mostly at the Sunderland end.
00:23:45The second not assured, Campbell keeping hold.
00:23:49Some good work.
00:23:52Nepham meeting it with a strong challenge, a certain challenge,
00:23:58bringing a bit of authority to proceedings at the back in that instance for Sunderland.
00:24:02He's coming short into feet, needs to be spinning into those channels and turning.
00:24:10Those Sheffield United defenders, they're making poor choices in the opening exchanges of this game, Sunderland.
00:24:18First chance for Mundell.
00:24:23And some reward from his first involvement.
00:24:26It's going to be a key battle, that Mundell up against Hamza Chowdhury, he's not a recognised right back.
00:24:30I think Mundell is a hard player to play against when you are a recognised right back.
00:24:34So for a midfielder to be in there, it's very important for Sunderland to get the ball out,
00:24:38play with real width, get Mundell running at Chowdhury and see just how good his defending is.
00:24:43The set-piece is no doubt a real, potentially profitable avenue for Sunderland,
00:24:49as you may have noticed in the semi-final.
00:24:52They scored the joint fewest in the regular season, but they got the all-important one the other evening.
00:25:01As long as it comes good when it matters.
00:25:03Ballard making his move in there,
00:25:06but Koeper making a confident claim.
00:25:10And looking to set the quick counter in motion, being led by Vinnie Souza.
00:25:16Brewster.
00:25:21Good defensive work actually there from Joe Bellingham, he sprints it back,
00:25:25he forces Souza to go backwards.
00:25:27I think Sunderland were fortunate that it was Bellingham, the athlete chasing Vinnie Souza.
00:25:58Burroughs is underneath it, but so is Rigg.
00:26:04Unhappy, but...
00:26:07they're deemed fair and square. This is Chowdhury.
00:26:12Brewster searching again for Campbell.
00:26:15That's the kind of run I was talking about, Eliza Maenda making.
00:26:19Terry's Campbell, it's a good offer, slightly over-hit,
00:26:22but it is a kind of hurtful ball.
00:26:25Defenders don't like it.
00:26:27It's intelligent attacking play, you've got Tyrese Campbell making that run behind,
00:26:31you've got Koeper-Moore just dropping a little bit deep,
00:26:33so you're giving the centre-halves, in particular for Sunderland,
00:26:35plenty to think about, both strikers not doing the same thing, not making the same runs.
00:26:41Meppen.
00:26:43Now Mundell.
00:26:49The gaps are being plugged at the moment, it's Meppen.
00:26:55I don't know whether it's nerves that are affecting this young Sunderland side,
00:27:00certainly this would not have been the opening 19 minutes
00:27:03that he would have dreamt about last night when he closed his eyes.
00:27:06Yeah, I think maybe that early opportunity for Koeper-Moore,
00:27:09Luko Ney going off as well, it can shake a team,
00:27:11so again they've just got to clear their heads,
00:27:13and unfortunately it's still 0-0, so they've just got to work their way back into the game
00:27:17and build a bit of confidence and belief.
00:27:26Well, he talked of the focus he saw from his players in the build-up to this one,
00:27:32Chris Wilder, he's described them as strong a bunch mentally
00:27:38as he's ever had at his disposal.
00:27:46And it's been rather underestimated because it has been almost a total rebuild,
00:27:53as the season has been progressing with uncertainty about who is actually in charge at the club as well,
00:27:59the ownership changing and when would it happen,
00:28:03a constant question from the summer to the winter.
00:28:08It's been an incredible season and I don't think Chris Wilder has probably got the credit
00:28:11that he was due in reality, turmoil in the summer,
00:28:15I really worried for them, wondered how many players they were going to be able to bring in.
00:28:20But he's changed everything about the club, obviously new ownership now,
00:28:24things are looking a lot better.
00:28:31Trahearne looking to get him behind, it's the first time we've seen him that high up the pitch.
00:28:36He's taken what, nearly halfway through the first half,
00:28:38but this is a big feature of his game, breaking forward out wider in central areas
00:28:42and step forward from right back.
00:28:44Lots of defences, a lot of problems with those intelligent runs that he makes,
00:28:48but they've been pinned in, Sunderland's the first opportunity he's had to step forward.
00:29:04Moore, again winning his battle.
00:29:07Neal, and he sues it.
00:29:11Brewster getting his flick on it.
00:29:14Fantastic attitude, they say, about Rhian Brewster,
00:29:22it's the confidence in his body, I suppose,
00:29:26given all the problems that have come his way.
00:29:30It's the quality that's been the elusive one,
00:29:34but he has had big moments this season, notably a Derby winner.
00:29:39Anthony Patterson has to deal with it with urgency,
00:29:42but offside against Campbell anyway.
00:29:54And the Sheffield United supporters breaking into applause for lifelong blade,
00:29:59Lib Hulme.
00:30:02A great tribute in her memory.
00:30:08APPLAUSE
00:30:10APPLAUSE
00:30:31Everyone wearing red and white, joining in that.
00:30:35Maienda's first chance to show.
00:30:38And first major moment of promise for Sunderland.
00:30:43This, for me, has to be part of the master plan,
00:30:46because he can run in behind, but he can also receive it when he's marked,
00:30:49spin his marker, and he's got that close control,
00:30:52dribbling at pace that defenders hate.
00:30:56They need to see more of that from him.
00:30:58Maienda has pretty much everything you need from a centre forward,
00:31:01he is physical, he's hard-working off the ball as well,
00:31:03because we saw there, he runs so quickly with the ball at his feet.
00:31:07There were some Ligue 1 clubs in France who were keen to take him,
00:31:10he chose Sunderland, he had a feeling.
00:31:13And there's so much more to come from a player who's only just out of his teens.
00:31:18It's Hulme who'll take this corner.
00:31:32Oh, a lot of shaking going on.
00:31:35Different tack, using rig.
00:31:38But ultimately not a successful one,
00:31:40and Hamer showing great determination to get there first.
00:31:44Outnumbered, but not outthought.
00:31:46Beautiful for Tyrese Gamble!
00:31:54The classic counterpunch floors Sunderland.
00:32:02And the Sheffield sound filling up our senses.
00:32:08Well, everybody in this ground expected a goal like that,
00:32:12if it was going to be scored, to be scored by Sunderland,
00:32:15because this is what they excel at.
00:32:17But it comes from a Sunderland corner,
00:32:21and how well does Gus Hamer do to get that?
00:32:27And how well does Gus Hamer do breaking at pace?
00:32:32But he picks his head up, spots the run of Gamble,
00:32:35and he picks him out with a wonderful ball.
00:32:38Gamble, he's got to get the first touch right.
00:32:40He does, and then how cool is that?
00:32:42Lifting the ball over the goalkeeper.
00:32:45What a goal, and nothing more than Sheffield United deserve.
00:32:49Defensively, you've got to ask questions,
00:32:51why are they so short in defensive numbers?
00:32:53But it's Hamer and it's Gamble that capitalise,
00:32:56it is stunning.
00:32:59Just the way that Hamer gets his head up,
00:33:00he's got three Sunderland players around him,
00:33:02none of them are really closing him down,
00:33:03they're standing and watching him.
00:33:05But the ball forward is outstanding,
00:33:07but the amount of ground that Tyrese Gamble has covered
00:33:09to get up in support, the touch and finish, exquisite.
00:33:12What a goal.
00:33:14Well, Chris Wilder said about his signing,
00:33:27that if we'd gone by the data, we wouldn't have gone near him.
00:33:31He was playing catch-up in terms of fitness when he arrived,
00:33:36he's had a traumatic year.
00:33:40But he could be following in the footsteps
00:33:44of his dearly loved and sorely missed father,
00:33:46who was a double Wembley winner here with Arsenal 32 years ago.
00:33:52Well, you have to give Chris Wilder enormous credit,
00:33:55the way he's managed Tyrese's Gamble,
00:33:57whole season, not just the latter stages,
00:34:00the whole season he's been able to keep him mostly fit,
00:34:05and he's been effective.
00:34:10I just wonder, was there maybe a lack of concentration from Sunday?
00:34:16It's their set-piece, they're moving around,
00:34:18they're trying to move Sheffield United around,
00:34:20did they just switch off defensively?
00:34:22Once the ball is headed clear,
00:34:24it seems there's kind of a lack of defensive reaction,
00:34:26maybe because they were on the front foot themselves.
00:34:29Potential there.
00:34:34It's probably not a strength of Elisa Maienda,
00:34:38but he gets in a brilliant area between the defenders,
00:34:41and he'll be disappointed, he really should be doing better.
00:34:45He just heads it too strongly.
00:34:47You've got centre-halves defenders watching the ball,
00:34:49he does the right thing, gets in between them,
00:34:51this pace on the ball is a glancing header you need in that situation.
00:34:58Give Sunderland credit, good reaction to conceding that goal.
00:35:08Well, I suppose it's a statistic that we have to bring out at this point,
00:35:21if only to give a bit of hope to those who've travelled from Sunderland six times
00:35:30in a second-tier play-off final as the team that scored first lost.
00:35:36Sunderland have come from behind to win at Wembley before,
00:35:39but on their first visit back in the FA Cup final of 1937.
00:35:46Well, this game, probably more than any other,
00:35:49the first goal is usually very, very key.
00:35:53It's been a lot of years since the team that conceded first has gone on to win.
00:36:01Well, Sunderland suffering in terms of the scoreline
00:36:06and also suffering the loss of one of their stalwart figures, Luke O'Neill.
00:36:10Let's get an update about his state of health from Jonathan Oakes.
00:36:14Yeah, I'm afraid it's a dislocated shoulder for Luke O'Neill,
00:36:18sustained as he attempted to stop Kiefer Moore getting to that early header.
00:36:22Luke's wife is with him in the treatment room,
00:36:25where medical staff have now managed to put the shoulder back in.
00:36:30Well, sad to say, our suspicions confirmed. Thank you, Jonathan.
00:36:40Luke is a wonderful, wonderful guy, and we really feel for him.
00:36:44Horribly painful, but Kiefer Moore did absolutely nothing wrong.
00:36:47He was just attacking the cross, he didn't go ploughing into O'Neill looking to injure him.
00:36:52Just a really unfortunate situation that has resulted in that.
00:36:56We wish him well.
00:37:00It's painful for Mandel, the circuit ploughs on.
00:37:07Mandel has managed to extricate himself from that initial challenge
00:37:13and sought to force the issue.
00:37:17The award of a free kick in Sheffield United's favour.
00:37:34Notable that as well as for a drink or two,
00:37:39Kiefer Moore's over for a word or two
00:37:43with the Sheffield United technical staff.
00:37:57It's notable that Moore was keen to latch on to O'Neill from the start of the game.
00:38:04Ballard has switched sides in terms of the centre of the Sunderland defence now.
00:38:14To meet that challenge with a greater amount of physical presence.
00:38:25Ahmed Hodgic.
00:38:27Now Bellingham.
00:38:29Campbell quickly there to try and stop it at source.
00:38:33Even the simple passes are coming astray, they just really have not settled.
00:38:37It actually even happened before Kiefer Moore's header and that brilliant save from Paterson.
00:38:43There's Hume, he might have found an in-road here, it's Rigg.
00:38:48And Robinson avoiding the corner.
00:38:50There's Gus Harmer as he gets caught watching the ball there.
00:38:52I mentioned Trey Hume, he will just go flying forward.
00:38:54Harmer has to track that forward run.
00:38:57He's looking infield, he's looking at the ball and Hume had gone.
00:39:08Ballard striding forward.
00:39:13Joe Bellingham.
00:39:16Ron Mepham.
00:39:18That was a red carded in the league fixture between the two at Bramall Lane.
00:39:26For a foul on Tyrese Campbell.
00:39:34O'Neill with a little bit of room.
00:39:37Circuit.
00:39:38Mundell.
00:39:41Just threatening to shift it and find that crossing space for Hamza Chowdhury.
00:39:45Battling back.
00:39:47That's twice now, I questioned earlier in the game just how defensively strong is Hamza Chowdhury.
00:39:51But he's actually defending well, just using his body, not trying to get the ball.
00:39:55Well I wonder from this corner if Chris Mepham has come on to the pitch.
00:39:57Whether he wanted to look him in the eye and say,
00:39:59look at this, look at this, look at this, look at this, look at this, look at this.
00:40:02Well I wonder from this corner if Chris Mepham has come on to the pitch.
00:40:05Whether he wanted to look him at the end.
00:40:06He doesn't really know where he's supposed to be.
00:40:08Maybe the communication.
00:40:10And he ends up really doing nothing.
00:40:12They take a short corner.
00:40:13One of your big headers of the ball isn't even anywhere near in there.
00:40:16And he ends up chasing.
00:40:18And he can't get back at Gus Harmer.
00:40:20Who does unbelievably well to pick a beautiful pass.
00:40:24That is more than matched by the take and finish of Tyrese Campbell.
00:40:28Brilliant from Sheffield United.
00:40:30A bit of confusion, maybe, from Sunderland.
00:40:32Yes, look at those three Sunderland players that kind of converge.
00:40:35No-one really closes him down.
00:40:36I think it's Mepham and Dan Neal.
00:40:38They kind of stand off him thinking he's got no support, he's got nowhere to go.
00:40:41But Campbell has covered so much ground up in support.
00:40:43So defensively, there has to be question marks there from Sunderland.
00:40:47I'd say it was an easy goal for Sheffield United to score.
00:40:50The athleticism of the two players breaking up the pitch was outstanding.
00:40:53Yeah, two moments of serious quality.
00:41:01Harmer presiding over this set-piece.
00:41:07Fired in by Burroughs!
00:41:16The man with the magic touch of Wembley strikes again!
00:41:23And what an extraordinary play-off campaign he has had.
00:41:28And Sheffield United, they can reach out and touch it now.
00:41:33Well, they will check the goal.
00:41:35I think VAR will have a look to see if there's an offside.
00:41:37But let's discount that for a minute and just admire the brilliance of that look.
00:41:42There are Sheffield United players.
00:41:45Are they in front of Anthony Patterson?
00:41:47This picture, I mean, is it possible?
00:41:50I mean, look at that.
00:41:52Sheffield United players.
00:41:54Are they in front of Anthony Patterson?
00:41:56This picture, this angle here, this will show us.
00:41:59Can he dive? Is he unsighted by Vinny Souza?
00:42:03That is the key moment.
00:42:05And it's over to you, Mike D.
00:42:07Yeah, I think that Taiwan, as the shot comes in,
00:42:10I think Bellingham just drops back late.
00:42:12He doesn't get back in time.
00:42:14Because he's coming away from the keeper,
00:42:16he does impact the keeper's view to see the ball.
00:42:18So the keeper can't dive too late because he knows the player there.
00:42:21I don't know where the VAR thinks he has impacted the goalkeeper.
00:42:24I think it could go either way, if I'm being honest with you.
00:42:27My gut feeling would be because of where he's stood and he's in the goal area,
00:42:30I think this could be chalked off.
00:42:32I don't think...
00:42:33Look, watch Patterson, it's almost a two-fold dive,
00:42:35in that he can't really see it,
00:42:37and it's not a fluid dive from a goalkeeper, which I think is impacted.
00:42:40Yeah, and I think what they'll do...
00:42:42Yeah.
00:42:44Yeah.
00:42:47Yeah, so what it will be,
00:42:49VAR's request is that Chris Cabana's going on an objected offside,
00:42:52which means it's a player in a position, the goal could be given,
00:42:55but then Chris will have the final say whether he's impacted the goalkeeper or not.
00:42:58I think he has, I think the goal will be chalked off,
00:43:00and I think Chris will then announce to the stadium what the decision is.
00:43:08Yes, that movement, is it Vinny Souza just moving across the goalkeeper?
00:43:12This is a massive moment in the game.
00:43:15I do feel the goalkeeper's ability to play the ball
00:43:18could be impacted by the position of Vinny Souza there.
00:43:22This could be huge for Sunderland, it could keep them in the game.
00:43:29So Vinny Souza's position the key,
00:43:33and the impact on Anthony Patterson,
00:43:35and Chris Cabana has to decide whether that impact
00:43:40affected his ability to get there.
00:43:43I think also where the actual attacker is,
00:43:45the attacker's stood with this, we've been touching this and the goalkeeper,
00:43:48it's when the goal will be disallowed,
00:43:50and the score will go back to 1-0,
00:43:52Chris will probably announce it now to the stadium.
00:43:58After review,
00:43:59Death United, 21,
00:44:01is in the line of vision of the goalkeeper,
00:44:03and clearly impacts.
00:44:06Final decision, no goal offside.
00:44:08Offside.
00:44:11And you have to feel that Harrison Burrows,
00:44:14his moment of glory chalked off,
00:44:16but Chris Cabana coming to the correct decision.
00:44:20Well, it's a lifeline, it really is,
00:44:22because had that been awarded,
00:44:24I don't think Sunderland would have had it in them
00:44:27to overturn a two-goal deficit against such a good team.
00:44:31He'll be relieved, but he will also know
00:44:34his team have got to start playing this occasion,
00:44:37because they haven't really got started.
00:44:43Well, Anthony Patterson...
00:44:48..produced one special moment to lift them,
00:44:51or that he hoped might lift them after a shaky start.
00:44:55Will that help Sunderland gather some wind into their sails?
00:45:00It's that big debate whether they should or shouldn't have VAR,
00:45:03but absolutely the right decision has been reached there.
00:45:06I think if you don't have VAR, even though Chris has got a view,
00:45:09the assistant referee can't see how close he is to the goalkeeper,
00:45:12he'll probably give some relation to Chris,
00:45:14who will then feed it back into the VAR.
00:45:16So if you don't have VAR it's probably a goal,
00:45:18would have been the incorrect decision for me,
00:45:20the right decision has been made.
00:45:22It's been touching distance of the 21,
00:45:24so a correct decision to chalk up a goal.
00:45:26And it was sort of a delayed dive as well,
00:45:28and that for me was a real clue that Anthony Patterson
00:45:31had been impacted by Vinny Souza being there.
00:45:34Of course, Fitzwilder would be so unhappy with that,
00:45:37but again, if you take that down the other end,
00:45:39he would want that goal chalked off if Sunderland had scored in similar circumstances.
00:45:45I know there was a debate amongst a good number of the managers
00:45:49coming into the play-off finals this weekend,
00:45:51if after 48 games of a season you've not had VAR,
00:45:55whether it should be here, but for moments like that
00:45:58when it really does come into its own...
00:46:03A few in the searching delivery rig, looking for the acrobatic moment.
00:46:25I just wondered, Don, how much do you feel mentally it affects Sheffield United?
00:46:29If they've got that second goal, it would be a mountain to climb for Sunderland,
00:46:32will Sheffield United be really disappointed with that? Can they recover?
00:46:35They've been so much the better team, and that's what they've got to focus on.
00:46:38Even if this game was level, they are far and away at the moment superior to Sunderland.
00:46:44That should be the focus in the minds of the Sheffield United players,
00:46:47but you just never know, do you?
00:46:51Fitzwilder will certainly believe in the mental fortitude of his team
00:46:54to ride the wave of that particular set-back.
00:46:59A little punch from their possession.
00:47:05Again, this game is an illustration, it's not how much of the ball you have,
00:47:08it's how effective you are with it.
00:47:10At the moment Sheffield United, on and off the ball, are a far better team.
00:47:16I'm looking at Enzo Le Fay, and they're not finding the pockets of space,
00:47:20or he's not finding the pockets of space.
00:47:22They've been unable, really, to get him on the ball and really impact this game,
00:47:27and I just wonder whether we get to half-time,
00:47:30and Regis Le Bris decides to make a change.
00:47:34He's working hard, he's dropping into pockets of space,
00:47:36he's like a number 10 to try and get on the ball,
00:47:38he's playing up alongside Mbappe, he's just getting no service at all,
00:47:41the game is getting really condensed, he's had no possession.
00:47:45Wilson Isidore among those waiting, potentially, to play apart from the bench.
00:47:51Well, if the theme of this game continues as it is to half-time,
00:47:56I would expect Wilson Isidore to be starting the second half.
00:48:02There's a sense, because they finished extremely strongly against Coventry
00:48:05in the extra-time period, and this is basically the team that finished that game,
00:48:10now Mephamon, obviously.
00:48:15And there was a sense that we've stumbled on something here,
00:48:18and that's something they've worked on to a greater extent
00:48:24in the build-up to this game.
00:48:27But it's not really yielded anything tangible yet,
00:48:30Lefebvre in a role that many want to see him play.
00:48:37Moore winning it again, Hamer.
00:48:40Moore once more, beyond Campbell.
00:48:43But it's brilliant, isn't it, and that's what Kiefer Moore offers,
00:48:47you can play that long ball into him and you know he's either going to flick it on,
00:48:51hold it up, bring his team-mate in.
00:48:53It's a lovely little cushioned header, and all of a sudden,
00:48:56they're on the front foot again.
00:48:58Slightly over-hit cross with the outside of the boot,
00:49:00but up to that point, excellent play.
00:49:03Once again he's moving, getting in between defenders,
00:49:05and it's not a long forward ball, it's a long pass, it's accurate.
00:49:08You've got a 6ft4, 6ft5 striker, but play the ball to him,
00:49:11don't just lump it up there and hope he can keep it.
00:49:14Be accurate with those forward passes, and time and again they're finding him.
00:49:18Kiefer Moore was in a car on his way to jet off to Turkey and sign for Hull,
00:49:25when Sheffield United called him and presented another option to him.
00:49:32It suited him for a number of reasons,
00:49:35and battling up near the top, albeit a season affected by injury,
00:49:40rather than having a near thing down at the bottom.
00:49:45That's what it's actually done about the mental strength of strikers.
00:49:48Tyrese Campbell had to score for eight games,
00:49:50now that belief that you can maybe get a goal,
00:49:52you've got to keep getting in goal-scoring positions,
00:49:54how strong do you have to keep the faith that an opportunity will come and you'll take it?
00:49:58For me, he would only have to say this has been the best goal-scoring season of his entire career,
00:50:03so despite the fact he hadn't scored in that little run of games,
00:50:06it's still really positive, and it feels with that finish...
00:50:10Didn't look like the finish of a striker that lacked confidence.
00:50:15Here's Rigg.
00:50:20It's not quite the task on their hands,
00:50:23in the sense that if it wasn't for Burnley's extraordinary defensive exploits,
00:50:27we'd be lauding Sheffield United to the skies,
00:50:30they've kept more clean sheets than in any other season.
00:50:33Sad for Luko Neyne, but the smile is never far away, despite the disappointment.
00:50:41He's smiling through the tears, he'll be absolutely devastated at what's happened to him.
00:50:58This is Sheffield United, this is exactly what they want,
00:51:02you're looking at the movement ahead of the ball,
00:51:04and you're not seeing any movement that is going to hurt Sheffield United.
00:51:11Just joining us, and looking at the clock in the top left-hand corner,
00:51:19and thinking that half-time might be soon upon us.
00:51:23I'm hearing there'll be a minimum of eight added minutes at the end of the half,
00:51:26as Mandel makes really impressive strides until Anel Ahmed-Hodgic piles in.
00:51:32Piles in.
00:51:38Moore making a great run there, and right to be disappointed.
00:51:43I think Sunderland get to half-time at just one down.
00:51:46They probably feel the first half has been a success,
00:51:48they have been able to play and dominated Sheffield United,
00:51:51but it could easily have been two or three.
00:51:53Yeah, it would almost be a moral victory, wouldn't it?
00:51:55If it were only one at half-time.
00:51:58Harmer, finding Peck.
00:52:06Burrows, and Sirkins.
00:52:11Peck challenging Neal, and it might fall Campbell's way.
00:52:27There will be a minimum of eight minutes.
00:52:42Confirmation from the fourth official of the eight added minutes at the end of the half
00:52:47for the long delay after Luko Neynes' desperately distressing injury,
00:52:54and also the wait for clarity on what Sheffield United thought was their second goal
00:53:01for a tantalising moment.
00:53:04Just looking at Sunderland in possession, there's a lot of white shirts standing still
00:53:08compared to Sheffield United when they have the ball, there's constant movement.
00:53:14Yeah, look, they get better results when they're a stronger team,
00:53:18when the opponent probably has slightly more of the ball than them.
00:53:22But it is noticeable, Sunderland are having more of the ball,
00:53:24but in these kind of areas with the defenders,
00:53:27and Sheffield United look very comfortable without the ball.
00:53:33And for Sunderland and Regis Lebris, that is not really the master plan for him.
00:53:40Reminds you of that little five-game winless where they lost the last five games of the season.
00:53:45Apart from Bristol City where they played with ten men for 83 minutes,
00:53:49they dominated the ball in all those other losses.
00:53:52It just doesn't suit them.
00:53:58Rigg.
00:54:02I just don't know where they fall, though.
00:54:04I think the ownership would like them to be a team that plays in a style
00:54:08where they do dominate possession.
00:54:10And such has been Regis Lebris' success this season,
00:54:14he's been able to impose his will a little more.
00:54:16Maienda.
00:54:19Rigg.
00:54:23Reflection on it.
00:54:24And it is a Sunderland corner.
00:54:26Surely it has to be means to an end, though, isn't it?
00:54:28Surely you've got to play in a way with a bunch of players
00:54:30that makes you as effective as you possibly can be,
00:54:32whether that's dominating the ball or not.
00:54:34Can you get the ball into the final third, can you create chances,
00:54:36can you work the opposition goalkeeper?
00:54:38So Sunderland have plenty of the ball, but they haven't really tested Michael Cooper.
00:54:44Well, it only takes one twist of fate
00:54:46and perhaps one moment of quality here from Enzo Le Fay
00:54:52to change the picture.
00:55:02Rhian Brewster defending that well.
00:55:05Here's Rigg.
00:55:07Full of fire and determination.
00:55:10And so...
00:55:13An underpass that switched the point of the attack,
00:55:15but Sunderland will have to go all the way back to build again.
00:55:26Meppet.
00:55:29Le Fay.
00:55:34Neal.
00:55:40Le Fay.
00:55:42Rhian Brewster.
00:55:44Defending the situation superbly well again.
00:55:46That's why he's playing.
00:55:49Look at his willingness to work off the ball,
00:55:51he wants to be on the ball high up the pitch,
00:55:53but he has to get back and defend, he does.
00:55:56Maienda in there,
00:55:57threatening Robinson had to get that right,
00:56:00and absolutely did for Sheffield United.
00:56:02Robinson's experience there, kicking in round on the cover,
00:56:05goal side of his man, brilliant positioning.
00:56:10Mohamed, well...
00:56:12He's in that sort of mood, that didn't come off, but...
00:56:16It won't stop him trying the next thing.
00:56:23Maienda.
00:56:25He is a player capable of doing it all himself.
00:56:28He won't win a free kick there.
00:56:30It's really clever defensive play from Vinicius,
00:56:33he just leans into Maienda just enough to knock him off balance,
00:56:37but not to foul him.
00:56:38Again, that cover he provides in front of the back four is outstanding.
00:56:43No frills, no spills, but it is so very important.
00:56:49There's a bit of Sheffield steel with style, isn't he?
00:57:08He's got time!
00:57:09He's fine!
00:57:10Come on, Ray!
00:57:13There's Mandel.
00:57:18Mepa.
00:57:23Well, now for Trey Hulme, who's got some room to work with.
00:57:30Chaudhry's...
00:57:32very distinctive head meets it.
00:57:39Oh, look.
00:57:41A little on the back foot there, and Cooper is at least...
00:57:45troubled to some extent by Rigg.
00:57:47Just through that moment, the earlier phase of that attack,
00:57:49there's loads of space there for Trey Hulme to deliver the cross,
00:57:52cos Harmer's not closed him down, but...
00:57:54the attackers in the box just aren't on the move.
00:57:56No.
00:57:57They're all standing and watching the cross come in,
00:57:59rather than getting across defenders.
00:58:00Easy to defend when the many you're up against are standing still.
00:58:04I don't think any of them are naturally wanting to get on the end of the cross.
00:58:07I don't think it's the strength of any of them,
00:58:09and that really showed with a lack of really good dynamic movement.
00:58:13Everybody in the stadium knew Trey Hulme was about to make that cross,
00:58:16but there was nobody on the move as it was delivered.
00:58:19I can only imagine.
00:58:20Down the other end of the cross is coming in, as we've seen.
00:58:22You've got Kiefer Moore, Tyrese Campbell...
00:58:24causing defenders problems, bullying them, getting across them,
00:58:27getting into goal-scoring positions.
00:58:37Neil.
00:58:45Lefebvre trying to point the way.
00:58:49He's got quite the challenge there,
00:58:51with Ahmed Hodgic and with Choudhury in attendance.
00:59:01Lefebvre roaming and roving to the kind of area where we've got used to seeing him.
00:59:07It's a bit of a check for a potential handball.
00:59:24Because the player's outside the penalty area,
00:59:26there's no real decision for VAR to get involved in.
00:59:29Well, he's outside the penalty area, and I don't think it strikes his hand,
00:59:32so I don't think he'll give handball for that, are you?
00:59:34I think he's just covering himself just in case he was inside.
00:59:36But I think in those situations you haven't even got to tell Lefebvre you're checking,
00:59:39because Lefebvre's seen it on the field, just play him.
00:59:42But for Don, if you're to reduce Lebris, Isidore has to come on, does he?
00:59:46I think so, I don't think that formation has worked in this particular game,
00:59:50on this particular occasion.
00:59:52They need to find a way of getting those live-wire forwards more involved.
00:59:56Lots of footing, ultimately caused no harm as far as Sunderland are concerned.
01:00:10Look at that solid defensive shape from Sheffield United,
01:00:25be it 4-4-2, 4-3-3.
01:00:27They're not going chasing the ball, they're saying to Sunderland,
01:00:29right, you try and break us down, and they're masters at this.
01:00:33Frustrating Sunderland, there's just no obvious forward ball,
01:00:36they've got to move the Sheffield United team around,
01:00:38and that takes bravery, it takes a bit of tempo to the play.
01:00:44Regis Lebris has the challenge of the season,
01:00:49to rally his troops at half-time.
01:00:52Tyrese Campbell with a quite exquisite finish to a lightning counter-attack
01:00:58in which Gustavo Hamer, the division's player of the year,
01:01:01played a magical part.
01:01:04Harrison Burrows having a second goal, as he thought for a moment,
01:01:08chalked off rightly due to Vinny Souza affecting Anthony Patterson's ability
01:01:13to deal with it, but it is a slender lead, but it appears a long way back
01:01:18for Sunderland.
01:01:19Sheffield United 1-0 Sunderland at the break.
