Tasmanian emergency services have put their response skills to the test through an air crash simulation at Launceston Airport. Video by Aaron Smith (28/5/25)

00:00We are conducting an Aerodrome emergency plan live exercise today

00:03where we're testing our response to a simulated aircraft emergency on the airport.

00:09We've got over 130 people engaged today between participants, responders and emergency services

00:15as well as some observers and we'll be setting up a live crash site on our airfield

00:19and then deploying those resources to that site to go through all of the processes associated

00:24should we have that type of event on the airport.

00:25It's an opportunity again to test our safety response to those types of events

00:29should they occur on airport and also look at our facilities and to continuously improve

00:33how we might respond if that type of incident occurs.

00:36We're one of the agencies that are testing our own response to an emergency exercise

00:40so we have Tasmania Police, TAS Fire, TAS Ambulance and it's a really good opportunity for us

00:45to see how we operate under this type of situation.

00:49Thankfully we don't get too many air crashes in Tasmania

00:52so any opportunity to do a practice run to see how we operate is really welcome by us.

00:58In an event like this we become the lead agency in managing the crash

01:03so for us to attend, if we're doing a normal day operations, to actually attend, get the briefing,

01:11take over the scene, manage the incident and test how we operate under a stressful situation involving an air crash.

01:18So I've been on the plane acting out as a passenger who's stressed out and doesn't know where they are

01:25so I'm expecting to get help with it or just be taken out of the plane and somewhere safe.

01:31It just seemed really interesting and something that I would really like doing.

01:35I also really like to act out things which is really good and just no experiences.
