00:00:00Hi everybody, it's time to get on back here right now, get on back here right now because
00:00:08we have the next act up here and it isn't just any act, folks. Tony has an album out
00:00:14right now called Cold on the Shoulder and you know his work from a lot of other folks
00:00:18too, but he's here to play for you live and in person and do his doggone best, so come
00:00:23on down and listen to the Tony Rice Unit.
00:00:30Man, I want to tell you, this air is thin up here. That's all there is to it. Is everybody
00:00:48having a good time here? Let me introduce everybody here to the members of this new
00:00:56band. It's fairly new anyway. And man, we're scattered out all over the country too. Wyatt's
00:01:02in Florida and I've sort of been hanging out in Boston some and Jimmy's in D.C. and Todd's
00:01:08out in San Francisco, but we get together here for the festival once a year anyway.
00:01:17Let's see, actually from Rhode Island, Charlestown, Rhode Island, on Manly, the newest member
00:01:22of this band is Jimmy Goodrode. You make him welcome. And younger brother here on the acoustic
00:01:33guitar will do some flat picking on his own here in a little bit. From the state of Florida,
00:01:38Wyatt Rice. And from San Francisco, California, on acoustic bass, a gentleman I've worked
00:01:48with for just about ten years now, just about this time ten years ago too, Todd Phillips.
00:02:00And of course on the lead acoustic guitar and lead vocal, from San Francisco, California
00:02:07and Tampa, Florida and Boston, Mass and anywhere else, USA, Tony Rice. Thank you very much.
00:02:16We'll do a tune here that was on a record of mine that came out about five or six years
00:02:24ago. The record was called Manzanita. And the tune is called Jen Sing Sullivan.
00:02:43About three miles from the Bat-Tail Yard at the reverse curve on down, not far south from a town
00:02:49depot, Sullivan's shack was found, back on the higher ground. You can see him every day, walking
00:02:57down the line, with an old brown sack across his back and his long hair down behind, speaking his
00:03:03worried mind. It's a long way from the Delta to the north Georgia hills, and a towed sack boat Jen
00:03:11Sing won't pay no traveling bill. And I'm too old to ride the rail off on the road alone, but I
00:03:19guess I'll never make it back to home, my muddy water Mississippi Delta home.
00:03:49The winter's here, they get too cold, the damp it makes me ill, you can't dig no roots in the
00:03:54mountainside, where the ground grows hard and still, you gotta stay at the foot of the hill.
00:04:00But next summer if things turn right, the companies will pay high,
00:04:04while I'll make enough money to pay my bills and bid these mounds goodbye, then he said with a sigh.
00:04:11It's a long way from the Delta to the north Georgia hills, and a towed sack boat Jen Sing
00:04:17won't pay no traveling bill. And I'm too old to ride the rail off on the road alone,
00:04:24but I guess I'll never make it back to home, my muddy water Mississippi Delta home.
00:04:47It's a long way from the Delta to the north Georgia hills, and a towed sack boat Jen Sing
00:05:01won't pay no traveling bill. And I'm too old to ride the rail off on the road alone,
00:05:08but I guess I'll never make it back to home, my muddy water Mississippi Delta home.
00:05:15Actually we're going to do a number of tunes here from uh from the Manzanita album and do a few tunes
00:05:36from other albums as well. Hold What You Got.
00:05:53Hold what you got, I'm coming home baby, hold what you got, and I don't mean maybe,
00:05:57been thinking about you, and I'm on my way. Don't sell the house, don't wreck the car,
00:06:03stay there honey right where you are, if you hold what you got, I'm coming home to stay.
00:06:09Well me in my mind, well I can see that's a mighty good sign, that I need you that's why,
00:06:14I can't wait to get back home. So squeeze yourself real good and tight,
00:06:20and I'll be home before daylight, if you hold what you got, I'm coming home to stay.
00:06:26Hold what you got, I'm coming home baby, hold what you got, and I don't mean maybe,
00:06:30been thinking about you, and I'm on my way. Don't sell the house, don't wreck the car,
00:06:36stay there honey right where you are, if you hold what you got, I'm coming home to stay.
00:07:00Well when I get back honey, I ain't leaving, I've been too lonely,
00:07:03little too much screaming, when I get back honey, this time I'm gonna stay.
00:07:08Well no we won't fuss, we won't fight, and this time things is gonna be all right,
00:07:13if you hold what you got, I'm coming home to stay. Hold what you got, I'm coming home baby,
00:07:19hold what you got, and I don't mean maybe, been thinking about you, and I'm on my way.
00:07:25Don't sell the house, don't wreck the car, stay there honey right where you are,
00:07:29if you hold what you got, I'm coming home to stay.
00:07:49Hold what you got, I'm coming home baby, hold what you got, and I don't mean maybe,
00:07:53been thinking about you, and I'm on my way. Don't sell the house, don't wreck the car,
00:08:00stay there honey right where you are, if you hold what you got, I'm coming home to stay.
00:08:06If you hold what you got, I'm coming home to stay.
00:08:24I did a solo album here a couple years ago and the album was called Church Street Blues
00:08:33and I did a couple instrumentals on there and I decided that I like them better with a band than
00:08:37I do with the just myself or another guitar. Here's a tune that's from that album it was
00:08:43written by Bill Monroe it's called Jerusalem Ridge.
00:12:44Thank y'all very much.
00:13:04We'll do a tune here, do a couple of instrumentals for you that I recorded.
00:13:09The first time I recorded this was with David Grisman many years ago
00:13:13and also I recorded my own version of it in its original composition called Devlin.
00:15:13So
00:17:13so
00:17:43so
00:17:52it's a tune from a record of mine called Backwaters,
00:17:55an instrumental album, the tune is called My Favorite Things.
00:19:14so
00:19:37wow
00:19:43so
00:20:14so
00:20:22so
00:20:52so
00:21:22so
00:21:52so
00:22:22so
00:22:39thank you. We're going to do a tune here, it's from the Cold on the Shoulder album,
00:22:45one that I recorded with with Emmylou Harris who incidentally will be here tomorrow.
00:22:53But I did my own, I think I might have recorded this with David Grisman too,
00:22:57it's called Wayfaring Stranger.
00:23:15so
00:23:30I am a poor wayfaring stranger
00:23:39Traveling through this world of woe
00:23:46There'll be no sadness, toil, or danger
00:23:54To that bright land to which I go
00:24:00I'm going there to see my mama
00:24:10I'm going there, no more to roam
00:24:18Well I'm just going over Jordan
00:24:23I'm just going over home
00:24:54so
00:25:04I know dark clouds will gather around me
00:25:12I know my way is rough and steep
00:25:18Yet beauty's fields lie just before me
00:25:28Where God's redeemed, their vigils keep
00:25:35I'm going there to see my mama
00:25:41She said she'd meet me when I come
00:25:51Well I'm just going over Jordan
00:25:59I'm just going over home
00:26:11so
00:26:21so
00:26:36I'm going there to see my mama
00:26:44I'm going there, no more to roam
00:26:51Well I'm just going over Jordan
00:26:59I'm just going over home
00:27:11Thank you
00:27:27We're going to feature Wyatt here on a tune or two
00:27:33His playing will speak for itself, I'll tell you. It's called the Alabama Jubilee
00:30:11so
00:30:33Thank you
00:30:41Let's give a hand
00:31:00We did some recording in Nashville. I have an album coming out probably in another five or six
00:31:06months. We did some recording in San Francisco, some in Nashville.
00:31:13We'll be doing some things from that project also. Here's one of them.
00:31:36So
00:31:41But in the darkness of the night all I hear is the ringing in my ears
00:31:45And my eyes are full of tears that I can't see
00:31:49So I'll seek comfort in bad places and I'm trying to forget the faces
00:31:54Of the many friends who say that it was never meant to be
00:31:58You can always write off by saying that it was never meant to be
00:32:03Though you once told me we'd always be as one
00:32:07And then you wish me a better day as you turn your back away
00:32:11And you write it off by saying it was never meant to be
00:32:33So
00:32:35Well, I've done some damage in my wake but I had the liberty to take the time to say
00:32:41It ain't all my fault alone
00:32:44I've been deceived and I've been forced to leave my anger and my grieving
00:32:48In a heart that's still believing it was always meant to be
00:32:53Well, you can always write it off by saying that it was never meant to be
00:32:57Though you once told me we'd always be as one
00:33:01And then you wish me a better day as you turn and walk away
00:33:06And you write it off by saying it was never meant to be
00:33:10So
00:33:30Well, you've turned your beauty and your charm into a weapon to badly harm
00:33:34The man you said was the best friend you had known
00:33:38But then your ways are justified by stubborn foolish pride
00:33:43And the price is paid by me because that's the way it's meant to be
00:33:47Well, you can always write it off by saying that it was never meant to be
00:33:52Though you once told me we'd always be as one
00:33:56Then you wish me a better day as you turn your back away
00:34:00And you write it off by saying it was never meant to be
00:34:07So
00:34:25Well, there's no dignity remaining and the loving worth retaining anymore
00:34:30So let's just do each other in
00:34:32And leave the sadness and the fury to the judgment of a jury
00:34:38And the signatures that say it was never meant to be
00:34:42You can always write it off by saying that it was never meant to be
00:34:47Though you once told me we'd always be as one
00:34:51Then you wish me a better day as you turn your back away
00:34:55And you write it off by saying it was never meant to be
00:35:02So
00:35:26Do a tune here from Manzanita called, uh, Blue Railroad Train
00:35:32Do a tune here from Manzanita called, uh, Blue Railroad Train
00:35:34Do a tune here from Manzanita called, uh, Blue Railroad Train
00:35:36Do a tune here from Manzanita called, uh, Blue Railroad Train
00:35:58Blue Railroad Train
00:36:00Going down the railroad track
00:36:02It makes me feel so doggone blue
00:36:04To listen to the no smoke stack
00:36:08Drivers are rolling on
00:36:10Leaving me here behind
00:36:14Give me back the good old days
00:36:16And let me ramble down the line
00:36:32Blue Railroad Train
00:36:34Blue Railroad Train
00:36:36Blue Railroad Train
00:36:42The blue railroad train
00:36:44He's leaving me here alone
00:36:48You're treating me good
00:36:50You're treating me bad
00:36:52You're making me think of home
00:36:56I hear that lonesome train
00:36:58I'd love to hear the whistle blow
00:37:00She's takin' the sun to beatin' the rain to makin' me wanna go
00:37:05Well, I got the blues, logging for some company
00:37:35There's many miles from where I am to the only one for me
00:37:41Well, I'm so lonesome here, waitin' for the man I fell
00:37:46I hope that engineer is kind enough to let me be his gift
00:38:04Well, blue railroad train's a good old pal to me
00:38:20It takes me everywhere if I wanna go and get my transportation free
00:38:25Blue railroad train, blue railroad train, blue railroad train
00:38:34Blue railroad train, blue railroad train, blue railroad train
00:39:05It's called Little Sadie
00:39:07I went out for a night to make a little round I met Little Sadie and shot her down
00:39:34I went back home, I got in the bed A .44 pistol went to my head
00:39:40I wake up the next morning, about half past nine The hacks and the boogies all stand in line
00:39:44The gents and gamblers stand around Carryin' Little Sadie to a buried ground
00:40:04Well, I began to think of what a deed I'd done I grabbed my hand and away I run
00:40:15I made a good run, but a little too slow They overtook me and Jerry Cole
00:40:19I was standin' on a corner, readin' the bill When up stepped the sheriff and Thomas Bill
00:40:24He said, young man, your name's Brown Remember the night you shot Sadie down
00:40:34Well, I said, Mr. Sheriff, my name is Lee And I shot Little Sadie in the first degree
00:40:55The first degree, the second degree If you got any papers, don't you read them to me
00:41:00They took me downtown, dressed me in black And they put me on a train and started me back
00:41:04All the way back to that Thomasville jail I had no money for to go my bed
00:41:29Well, the judge and the jury, they took their stand The judge had the papers in his right hand
00:41:33Forty-one days and forty-one nights, forty-one days
00:41:38The weather ball was dry
00:41:40The weather ball was dry
00:42:11I recorded it years ago and just sort of let it lay idle for a while
00:42:16It's called Home from the Forest
00:42:40All the neon lights were flashin' and the icy wind did blow
00:42:51The water seeped into his shoes and the drizzle turned to snow
00:42:56His eyes were red, his hopes were dead, and the wine was runnin' low
00:43:01And the old man came home
00:43:05From the forest
00:43:08His tears fell on the sidewalk as he stumbled in the street
00:43:13A dozen faces stopped to stare, but no one stopped to speak
00:43:18For his castle was a hallway and the bottom was only friend
00:43:23And the old man stumbled in
00:43:28From the forest
00:43:34From the forest
00:43:53Up a dark and dingy staircase the old man made his way
00:43:58His ragged coat around him as upon his cot he laid
00:44:03And he wondered how it happened that he ended up this way
00:44:08Gettin' lost like a fool
00:44:13In the forest
00:44:16And as he lay there sleepin' the vision did appear
00:44:21Upon his mantle shining the face of one so dear
00:44:26Who loved him in the springtime of a long-forgotten year
00:44:30When the wildflowers did bloom
00:44:35In the forest
00:45:00She touched his grizzled fingers and she called him by his name
00:45:06And then he heard the joyful sound of children at the game
00:45:11In an old house on a hillside in some forgotten town
00:45:16When the river runs down
00:45:20From the forest
00:45:23When the mighty roar of the big jet soared above the canyon stream
00:45:27And the common, common light goes on for the city never sleeps
00:45:33And to an old forgotten soldier the dawn won't come no more
00:45:38For the old man has come home
00:45:43From the forest
00:46:08Let's see, there's a tune here that I recorded as a duet with Ricky Skaggs.
00:46:17Boy, I told you I was going to do the whole Man's A Neat album.
00:46:21It's called Midnight on the Stormy Deep. Jimmy and I will sing it for you.
00:46:28Oh, I hope this altitude agrees with me now, boys.
00:46:42It was midnight on the stormy deep
00:46:49My son would tell me what I keep
00:46:57And to think of her I'd lock behind
00:47:04And ask if she'd be true and kind
00:47:11I never shall forget the day
00:47:19That I was forced to go away
00:47:26In silence there my head she'd rest
00:47:34And press me to her loving breast
00:47:48And press me to her loving breast
00:47:55Oh Willie, don't go back to sea
00:48:21There's other girls as good as me
00:48:29But none can love you true as I
00:48:36Pray don't go where the bullets fly
00:48:43The deep, deep sea may us divide
00:48:51And I may be some other's bride
00:48:59But still my thoughts will sometimes stray
00:49:05To thee when thou art far away
00:49:35I never have proved false to thee
00:49:54The heart I gave was true as thine
00:50:02But you have proved the truth to me
00:50:10I can no longer call thee mine
00:50:17So fairly well I'd rather hang
00:50:25My home upon some icy lake
00:50:33Where the southern sun refused to shine
00:50:40And the trust of love so false as thine
00:50:54Thank you!
00:51:25Well I've been hanging out uptown
00:51:30Poisoning that low down rain
00:51:33Watching good time with Charlie Friends
00:51:35Is driving me insane
00:51:39Up on shady Charlotte Street
00:51:41Lord the green lights look red
00:51:44I wish I was back home on the farm
00:51:46Lordy in my bed the birds are singing
00:51:48And I wish I was back home on the farm
00:51:51Lordy in my bed the birds are singing
00:51:53Lordy in my bed the birds are singing
00:51:55And I got myself a rocking chair
00:51:58To see if I could lose these thin blinds
00:52:01Hard time I held on Church Street Blues
00:52:05I found myself a picker friend
00:52:24I read yesterday's news
00:52:26I folded up page twenty-one
00:52:28And stuck it in my shoe
00:52:31I gave me a nickel to the poor
00:52:33My good turn for the day
00:52:35I folded up my old billfold
00:52:37And I threw it far away
00:52:40And I got myself a rocking chair
00:52:42To see if I could lose these thin blinds
00:52:46Hard time I held on Church Street Blues
00:53:04Well I wish I had some guitar strings
00:53:08Old black diamond brand
00:53:10I'd string up this old Martin box
00:53:12And go and join some band
00:53:15But I guess I'm gonna stay right here
00:53:17To pick and sing a while
00:53:19Try to make me a little change
00:53:21To give you folks a smile
00:53:24And I got myself a rocking chair
00:53:27To see if I could lose these thin blinds
00:53:30Hard time I held on Church Street Blues
00:53:50Well I got myself a rocking chair
00:53:52To see if I could lose these thin blinds
00:53:56Hard time I held on Church Street Blues
00:54:17This is a tune here that I did
00:54:19On a Rebel album about twelve years ago
00:54:22And recently re-recorded
00:54:27Could you turn that roar down a little bit?
00:54:50Georgia
00:54:52Georgia
00:54:55Georgia
00:55:00The whole night through
00:55:04Just an old sweet song
00:55:06Got Georgia
00:55:08Got Georgia on my mind
00:55:17Georgia
00:55:19Georgia
00:55:22The song of you
00:55:27Well it comes soft and clear
00:55:30Like moonlight
00:55:32Like moonlight through the pine
00:55:39How their arms reach out for me
00:55:45How their eyes that smile so tenderly
00:55:50That still in peaceful dreams
00:55:53I see the road leading back to you
00:56:01Georgia
00:56:05Georgia
00:56:08The whole night through
00:56:13Just an old sweet song
00:56:16Got Georgia
00:56:20Got Georgia on my mind
00:56:23Got Georgia on my mind
00:56:45We'll do the Bluegrass Flat Pickin' National Anthem here
00:56:49It's a tune called The Blackberry Blossom
00:56:53The Blackberry Blossom
00:57:23The Blackberry Blossom
00:57:53The Blackberry Blossom
00:58:23The Blackberry Blossom
00:58:25The Blackberry Blossom
00:58:53The Blackberry Blossom
00:59:23The Blackberry Blossom
00:59:25The Blackberry Blossom
00:59:53The Blackberry Blossom
00:59:55The Blackberry Blossom
00:59:57The Blackberry Blossom
00:59:59The Blackberry Blossom
01:00:16Water time
01:00:19Sing one Jimmy
01:00:21This attitude is killing me!
01:00:29I think Tony went to fetch a pail of water or something back there.
01:00:39Actually, he went back to select a new tune.
01:00:42And I see it's down in the key of D with the low string, so it must be More Pretty Girls Than One.
01:01:12In any old town that I ramble on around, there's more pretty girls than one.
01:01:18Well, my mama talked to me last night, and she gave to me some good advice.
01:01:44She said, son, you ought to quit all that ramblin' all around and marry your sweet lovin' wife.

01:04:05And this is one of the most requested tunes that I've gotten in the last few years.
01:04:10I haven't really done it that much.
01:04:15A tune written by Herb Peterson called Old Train.
01:04:20Old train.
01:04:32Old train, I can hear your whistle blow and I won't be jumping on again.
01:04:40Old train, I've been everywhere you go and I know what lives we hardly spend.
01:04:47Old train, each time you pass you're older than the last and it seems I'm too old for running.
01:04:55I hear rusty wheels spraying against the rail, they cry with every mile.
01:05:02And I think I'll stay a while.
01:05:16Old train, I grow weary at the miles and I miss the freedom that was mine.
01:05:32Old train, just to think about those times I'll smile when you hop on by.
01:05:39Old train, each time you pass you're older than the last and it seems I'm too old for running.
01:05:47I hear rusty wheels spraying against the rail, they cry with every mile.
01:05:54And I think I'll stay a while.
