00:00Hi, welcome back everyone. I'm here today at Pukeariki Museum with another
00:14fantastic expert. We've got Karen from Project Reef down in Pātea. Kia ora Karen.
00:19Kia ora. Thanks for joining us today. So what is a habitat Karen? So there are
00:26various marine habitats but basically a marine habitat is like a home where creatures can find
00:33food and where they can find mates and breed and also where they're sheltered they have protection
00:39so an offshore rocky reef that Project Reef has been studying is a wonderful habitat for all of
00:45those things. Fantastic. So from our other lessons we're still kind of discovering what is a kaitiaki
00:52and how do we show kaitiaki tanga and we're just discovering how cool Te Mawana actually is.
00:59So what makes Project Reef so cool? Okay so we've been studying just one of a multitude
01:09of hard rocky reefs that are offshore of South Taranaki. So if we just look at the Project Reef,
01:15this is a diorama representing the Project Reef, you'll see that it's a wonderful habitat for so
01:22many creatures and we can see the shelves that offer protection. So we have our crayfish and our
01:29carpet sharks underneath the shelves. We can see in the crevices the kinna hiding from predators like
01:36your big snapper and we see the reef covered in this beautiful algae. So there's something quite
01:42special off of South Taranaki there's a shallow shelf that extends way offshore quite unusually
01:48over 40k offshore so if it's shallow and it's full of these rocky reefs there's plenty of light and if
01:56there's light your plants can grow and um yeah plants all kind of organisms hide and feed on plants
02:06in the holdfast and they're not roots they kind of go onto the reef you'll see all sorts of little
02:11mollusks and worms and brittle stars hiding there um yeah so we have lots of light lots of plant life
02:19and that's the start of your food chain um so there's lots of biodiversity as you can see on this
02:24reef absolutely um we have some um some animals they look like plants they're actually sponges so we see
02:32some yellow ones and some grey ones and some orange ones this beautiful yellow one here
02:39this has been so amazing karen i didn't even realize that there was a there were a network of rocky
02:45reefs so close to our south taranaki coastline thank you so very much for imparting your knowledge with
02:52us today um i'm sure i speak with myself and all you tamariki out there that we've certainly learned a
02:57lot from you so nga mahi nui thank you thank you for the opportunity to to be part of your wonderful
03:03journey exploring the biodiversity of taranaki yeah
