00:00So just wondering how long do we actually leave it out there for?
00:03Yeah so once the camera gets to the bottom like it is now, it records for 30 minutes
00:08on the bottom and then we'll come back and pick it up. So we normally have three camera frames
00:14and so we'll put that one out then do another two drops and then by that time we can circle back
00:19and start picking them up. So once we pull the camera back up on board we download the footage
00:25and then it all gets uploaded to the Spyfish Aotearoa platform which is pretty exciting.
00:33Yeah it's great and so that's where the citizen scientists can come and identify the fish.
00:38Yeah absolutely so yeah anyone in New Zealand or around the world can log into Spyfish Aotearoa
00:46and start looking at the footage from Tapawai Marine Reserve and start identifying fish.
00:51So what kind of fish do you expect to see out here?
00:53Yeah so I reckon today and at this location there's good chance we'll see some snapper,
00:58some blue cod, probably some scarlet wrasse and who knows what else, maybe a stingray,
01:03maybe some crayfish. Oh I love that, that sounds amazing.
01:06It's an amazing project, definitely recommend everyone gets on board.
01:10Why do we do this? What's the purpose?
01:12So the purpose is to, long term is to speed up the whole process so if you imagine just here in
01:19Tapawai we've got close to 80 sites and if we film for 30 minutes at every site a person has to go
01:26through watch all that footage and identify and count all the fish so that's really time consuming.
01:32So what we're trying to get to is a point where we've trained these AI models so that we can upload
01:40all the BUV footage and the computer can identify and count the fish for us.
01:45Oh that sounds like a really fast and efficient way of spending your time
01:49rather than counting fish.
01:50Yeah so it will save us time, really helps speed up the conservation process so we know exactly
01:57what's happening you know almost in real time and that's where we need everyone's help to get on
02:03board the spyfish platform, tagging fish that they recognize, counting the numbers and that work
02:10then helps train these AI models.
02:12Oh so anyone could do it, we could do it ourselves.
02:15Absolutely.
