00:00Kia ora koutou. We're so excited today because we're back in beautiful Tapawai Marine Reserve
00:15to learn a bit more about the exciting marine spaces that we have here in Taranaki.
00:21So hi Cam, thanks for having us again. Kia ora Tash, great to have you on board.
00:26Yeah really excited to talk to you about a couple of our marine reserves so Tapawai and Paranunuhi.
00:31Great, so let's start with Tapawai Marine Reserve. Cam, what makes it so special?
00:35Yeah so Tapawai Marine Reserve is an amazing piece of water just off the coast of New Plymouth here.
00:41It's made up of underwater reefs, kelp forests, there's big areas of sand as well and there's a huge
00:49range of fish and different species so up to 80 different fish species in this marine reserve.
00:54Then we've got all kinds of different invertebrates so crayfish right down to tiny little nudibranchs.
01:02That's amazing so this is almost like a safe haven for the marine life around the islands.
01:08Yeah absolutely so it's a fully protected area so it gives all the species living there a chance to
01:13recover and thrive. It's like a nursery for them to grow up and then they can spread out through the
01:20the rest of the ocean. That sounds really important for us to be protecting it.
