Trail running has become a booming sport in recent years. Advocates are now calling for its inclusion in the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

00:00If there's one thing Raimundo Sanchez loves more than trail running, it's crunching numbers.
00:08He's combined his passions to push for the sport to gain more legitimacy in the world of professional athletics.
00:17He's using Brisbane's Mount Kuthar to accurately measure trail running events.
00:22In road running they measure the distances with a calibrated bicycle and you cannot see any bicycle going through the trails.
00:29So we need another set of tools to do so.
00:32Using a GPS, he takes thousands of measurements to get the most accurate distance possible.
00:37The main issue is fairness. If you want to make fair comparisons between efforts, we need to have a standard to understand the length of the race and all the complexity of each race around the world.
00:49He's got the backing of Queensland's peak trail running body.
00:52We're not talking just 100 metre courses that are, you know, the same measurement all around the world.
00:58We're talking about different trails, different elevations, different terrain.
01:01And it's really important that the data and the performance metrics are things that these people can understand.
01:06Brisbane's Olympic Organising Committee is expected to reveal what sports it'll endorse for 2032 in the next 18 months.
01:13These runners hope their work will give trail running the edge it needs to earn a place in the games.
01:19That's because of its growth. It's because of its diversity. It's because of the size of groups that are actually coming out of the woodwork to join trail running as an amazing new sport.
