The live-action remake of Disney's Lilo & Stitch has been released, bringing with it several changes from the original animated film. The new film, directed by Dean Fleischer Camp, has been reimagined for modern audiences while maintaining the core essence of the beloved animated tale.[1]
Changes in Characters and Storyline
One of the significant changes in the live-action remake is the omission of Captain Gantu, the main villain of the animated film. Instead, Jumba assumes the role of the primary antagonist.[2] [3] Jumba, voiced by Zach Galifianakis, is portrayed as a more ruthless and villainous character compared to his jovial and quirky persona in the original.[4]
Character Depth and New Additions
The live-action remake expands on Nani's character, providing her with a more detailed backstory and motivations. Sydney Agudong plays Nani, portraying her as a "hotheaded" and determined individual who has put her college dreams on hold to care for Lilo.[5] The film also introduces new characters, including Tūtū, played by Amy Hill, who becomes a surrogate mother figure to Lilo and Nani.[6] [7]
Differences in Character Portrayal
Pleakley's character is also altered in the live-action remake, as he no longer wears women's clothing when disguising himself on Earth. Billy Magnussen plays Pleakley, and the character's human disguise is more subdued compared to his animated counterpart.[8]
Ending and Conclusion
The ending of the live-action remake differs from the original. In the new film, Tūtū takes in Lilo after their house is destroyed, and Nani is encouraged to pursue her college dreams, allowing her to visit Lilo and Stitch through a portal gun.[9] [10]
Authenticity and Cultural Representation
The live-action remake strives to provide a more authentic depiction of Hawaiian culture. Director Dean Fleischer Camp worked with consultants to ensure that the film accurately represented the culture and values of Hawaii.[11]
Comparison with the Original
While the live-action remake maintains the core story and characters of the original, it brings some significant changes to the table. The new film's attempt to ground the story in a more realistic and emotional context is notable, although some fans have expressed concerns that the remake is too similar to the original.

00:00welcome back everyone i'm going to be talking a little bit about um lilo and stitch uh the new
00:13disney live action remake i'm going to give you my two cents on the movie because uh every one
00:17of their cousins seems to be hating this movie um and this is one of those cases where i feel
00:24like everyone's just being super super nitpicky um even some of my favorite reviewers like jeremy
00:30johns he didn't really give it a favorable rating and i almost always agree with jeremy jeremy's like
00:35a spot-on uh reviewer so um but yeah surprisingly like grace randolph uh didn't like it at all
00:45really she had a lot of nitpicks um i mean and some of her points are valid you can go watch her video
00:51check out her video if you're curious uh i'm not the biggest grace randolph fan but because she does
00:58let her politics get in the way um occasionally but she does know her stuff it's it'd be ignorant
01:03to say she's uh she's a fool when it comes to hollywood um how hollywood works the inner workings
01:11the the machinations is how you say it not machina nations but anyways um so yeah so she's she's very
01:20knowledgeable about that she understands you know why studios do what they do and uh like i said her
01:26politics kind of get on my nerves a little bit she's uh very far left and i'm just kind of a little
01:32bit right of center so but i mean you know to discredit her her knowledge would be would be rather
01:37foolish so um but yeah a lot of critics man like up and down the board like there's an endless parade
01:44of people that just don't like this movie uh calling it a disaster a dumpster fire you name it so
01:52you know is it terrible no it's it's really not um now i noticed one of the differences between
02:01the review i'm about to give you and the review that other people are giving is that just about
02:07everybody it seems um watched the animated classic before going to see the movie i did not and i did
02:15not for a reason i wanted to judge this movie on its own merits of course there's some things that
02:22i'm going to remember from the animated feature some differences i'm going to notice but to watch
02:27a classic and then hold this modern incarnation up to it is rather unfair uh to the new movie
02:36um nobody really i don't i don't know maybe some people do i don't really want a movie to be a
02:42you know uh scene for scene copy so i'm just uh it's gonna be a short video i'm just gonna delve
02:50dive delve or dive i'm not sure let me know in the comments which one's right and which one's
02:56right delve or dive um i'm gonna dive into the comments uh i'm gonna dive into my thoughts on the
03:03movie uh what i liked what i didn't liked and i'll probably be all over the place i apologize i'm
03:09doing this without a script but in case you're wondering this is just me tunneling out my one
03:15chunk uh skyscraper i'm still working on it because they lowered bedrock um by like 60 blocks not too long
03:24ago so i'm in the deep slate layer but it's like 60 blocks thick or something that's ridiculous so
03:31i'm almost there i am almost there i'm getting there but um but yeah so for those of you that
03:36are like fuck minecraft let me just get on to the review so um things i liked stitch stitch is
03:45perfect uh some people will complain that he's not in the movie enough and i would say that's probably
03:52due to the fact that i i've heard from several people that this was originally going to be a
03:59uh series on disney plus like a like a limited series and that being the case they made this
04:07for like around 100 million uh the production budget and of course there's advertising to
04:13to raise it above that but that is hold on excuse me sorry that is incredibly cheap by today's standards
04:22i mean 100 billion is 100 million sorry is a lot of money but you know these days it's not uncommon for
04:28movies to be in the 300 million price range or even more so uh stitch looks amazing i thought the cgi was
04:36spot on his voice actor is amazing as well didn't have a problem with stitch at all uh there were several
04:45scenes and i don't say this lightly because i'm not someone who's prone to getting emotional during a
04:51movie but there's a couple scenes where i had to i had to fight back some manly tears because um
04:57you know this is a very touching movie and it hits home for a lot of people and i'm no exception so
05:02there's there's a couple scenes yeah if you've seen even the uh the classic you know what i'm talking
05:07about um but yeah they're they're repeated here all the all the key beats from the original classic
05:14are here there are some changes i'm going to get into that because frankly we're talking about what a 30
05:20year old movie at this point um and this is very very similar to that so if you've seen the original
05:26this is already kind of spoiled for you but um stitch is perfect okay moving on lilo is perfect
05:36uh she's a six-year-old actress this is the first thing she's ever done and i thought she was amazing
05:42i don't normally like child actors um because it's too easy to tell when they're looking at
05:48a coordinator or their parents a coach you know they're looking off camera at somebody and
05:54telling them what to do reminding them what to do but she was she was really really good
05:59she really nailed the character of lilo and uh i thought she was amazing now nani her sister
06:08the there this this is where some of the nitpicks come in some of the you know some of the nitpicks
06:13say oh yeah they ruined her character that's that's a bit extreme there's a lot of people
06:19like i said on youtube making wild outrageous claims because it gets you know generates clicks
06:23and views and you know i got a small channel i'm not getting paid to do this this is just
06:28something i like to do so you know i'm not going to lie to you or try to manipulate you i'm just going
06:35to give you the truth just like i would want um you know to to be told the truth so nani is not
06:42ruined uh i do feel like her character kind of takes a hit in this movie now she does have a nice
06:50little kind of like redemption scene uh for her character at the end where she's she's crucial to
06:57the plot um and i thought that was nice but yeah to say her character's been ruined or butchered
07:05is just it's one of those dramatic exaggerations that you see all over youtube um did did her
07:13character take a hit yeah i won't deny that yeah she was i thought much more central to the movie
07:19in the animated feature so yeah her character took a little bit of a hit um let's see who else is there
07:26um the aliens now in the original movie the aliens that are trying to capture stitch i forget their
07:36names i'm sorry i'm not a huge huge fan of this movie but um you know what i'm talking about the the
07:42the big scientists with the the four eyes and the uh one-eyed alien um yeah they're they're tracking
07:50stitch the entire movie they decided to go with like human disguises so for almost all the movie
07:57they're just in their their human disguises just i thought was a little lazy but again this is like
08:03i said this was made for a hundred million so probably cgi-ing their entire characters would
08:08not only deprive them of screen time which actors you know insist on getting when they sign up for a
08:15role but um they'd just be glorified voice actors at that point um but yeah it it feels a little off
08:24i i guess they couldn't or they didn't want to do the whole aliens and silly human disguises because
08:31an animation you know that passes uh mustard you know people aren't too critical of animation but it
08:37would have looked weird for these cgi aliens to be in disguises i guess for the live action so
08:44that's that's a big change to the movie and i and not and not a good one i would say i thought that
08:50was a detraction because i don't i don't care what these actors look like you know what i'm saying i
08:55wanted the aliens so the goofy aliens uh let's see who else is there there is i don't recall she might
09:03be in the original but they have a neighbor that's essentially like family like she's watched lilo grow
09:10up she knew their mom and dad before they passed yada yada so um i don't remember her in the classic
09:18so i think she's an additional character um but she is all right i liked her character a lot of people
09:25are hating the additional characters because they weren't part of the uh classic movie but again i don't
09:32want a scene for scene repeat of the original movie in live action form because that would be rather
09:39boring um but i guess some people do i guess a lot of people do want a scene for scene recreation so
09:46um let's see what else is there there's uh
09:50uh the casting you know the the surfing boyfriend nani's surfing love interest he's in here
09:58uh my daughter thought he was uh extremely handsome it's not the word she used but uh
10:05but yeah she thought he was amazing so i'll trust her judgment on that uh
10:13trying to think because really i mean that's that's pretty much the central characters you got lilo stitch
10:20nani and everybody else is just kind of like in the background they're not very important at all so
10:28um one thing that i couldn't help one difference hold on a second
10:33excuse me one thing i did notice um which i thought was odd but this is probably again for
10:42financial reasons because the movie is so cheap and elvis royalties probably cost a fortune
10:49but if you'll remember the original uh lilo and stitch the animated feature and just try to see how
10:56far i had to go right there excuse me the original feature there was a lot of elvis there's a lot of
11:03elvis uh elvis songs uh like devil in disguise uh lila sorry not lila stitch was playing like
11:10cosplaying elvis for a good bit of the movie uh that's been stripped out of here largely now there are
11:17a few elvis songs but like i said elvis was a big big feature in the uh original animated feature so
11:26uh probably i'm i'm guessing that was just a financial choice although like elvis's elvis's
11:33character has been under attack uh by the far left so that might be a big part of it too
11:39a lot of people misrepresenting you know him saying he stole black music he stole rock and roll from
11:45black people blah blah blah even though all the greats are on record saying that you know most of
11:51them owe their careers to elvis presley because he went to town for them and his music like made their
11:58music popular whereas on the radio stations before elvis they couldn't get any airtime so
12:04uh but i'm trying to think
12:07i said the cgi looks pretty good if anything if if i have like any like major complaints i would
12:18have loved to seen more stitch but i get it he's you know he's expensive i didn't think like some
12:24people some reviewers are saying that oh he's barely in the movie at all he's like a side character in
12:30his own movie that's not true if you watch the original there's a lot of screen time that stitch
12:36isn't in there you know you've got the social worker coming to their home um you ain't got the
12:43aliens their scenes and whatnot so stitch is not by any means in every single scene of the original
12:49movie it's just uh you know nostalgia nostalgia filters um you know people are are so so picky these
12:58days like i thought i was picky because you know i'm i'm not really a fan of uh of the style
13:05excuse me a style of uh james gunn's superman but i'm not gonna call the movie trash before it comes
13:13out you know what i'm saying uh and i'm sure there's gonna be like even in movies i don't like
13:19there's still a lot of aspects where i'm like oh i like that part you know there i may not like the
13:25movie overall but there's still some good scenes in it there's a lot of uh you know bad movies that
13:30i've seen that i watch i'll i'll even re-watch just for like one or two scenes in the movie um because
13:37even in a bad movie like i said there could be some good scenes so um trying to think trying to think
13:46oh a lot of people are being critical spoiler alert if you don't want to know anything at all
13:59about the uh the live action movie i'm guessing most of you probably have already seen at this
14:04point but i am about to reveal something minor um apparently the ending is a little different and a
14:16uh lilo sorry not lilo nani her older sister giving her uh like custody giving the neighbor
14:24custody they're being highly highly critical of that and i don't really understand why because
14:30it's not like this neighbor loves them like a grandma you know saying like she likes it she's
14:36literally been there the whole time she knew the folks knew the parents she's watched these these
14:41girls grow up um you know of course nani is barely an adult herself so she's still very childlike in uh
14:48in this this older woman's eyes but she doesn't like give uh she doesn't she doesn't give lilo to
14:54the older woman she does give her custody but i mean she literally lives right next door so nani can
15:00pursue her dreams she can um you know and she can always challenge it in court i mean it's not like
15:07it's not like a court is going to deny her sister custody once she's a little older and got a career
15:13under her belt there's no reason for them to do that so a lot of people are nitpicking about that
15:18saying oh that doesn't make sense you know and they're making fun of the whole ohana means family
15:23unless your neighbor wants custody and you know like i said people just love to bitch about anything
15:31and uh it gets really tiresome really really tiresome um because i mean honestly yeah i'm not i'm not
15:39going to be too critical of a movie that that you know had a lot of feels in it so
15:46um i'm trying to think there's just there's just not a whole lot of other characters like
15:53is it a perfect movie no it's not a perfect movie but considering how bad recent
16:00disney live action movies have been uh i'm willing to give them a pass i'm willing to say
16:06hey good job you know same thing with the thunderbolts was the thunderbolts a perfect movie
16:11of course not there was a lot of plot conveniences a lot of things in the beginning of the movie
16:16to just get the story moving um yeah they're under the bed freaked me out at first when i first saw i
16:23was like oh my god where did all my traders go but they're they're under the bed um anyway that
16:30happens a lot in nighttime like for some reason it's cute it's almost like they're hiding so
16:35um yeah just i would i would definitely recommend it uh i went to see it with the daughter we had a
16:42really good time um you know it's it's gonna make a billion or something close to it i don't think bad
16:51reviews are gonna stop this movie and uh and that is something to keep and keep in consideration
16:56like when it comes to uh movies like you know anything anything disney makes or you know james
17:04gunn's superman um you know i have my reasons for not being interested in seeing because it's because
17:09i don't like that flavor but there are like people out there literally that you know are rooting for
17:16you know james gunn to fail or they want disney to go bankrupt and so they give you this fake opinion
17:22you know they're gonna dislike it no matter what you know i mean i'm eventually going to to watch
17:27james gunn's superman at some point and who knows maybe it'll be great maybe or if it's not maybe
17:33somebody will put a edited version out that takes out all the goofy stuff who knows but anyways that's
17:39that's about gonna wrap this up i'd like to thank y'all for watching and uh and uh take care all right bye
17:48you
17:49you
17:53you
18:01you
18:05you
