00:00Hello, everyone. I recently had the chance to try out Mario Kart World and the Switch
00:082 in general, because I was invited by Nintendo to try it out at their New York Switch 2 experience.
00:18I went about a few days after Nintendo blocked all of my Mario Wonder videos worldwide,
00:23so they have a bit of a love-hate relationship with me. So yeah, I'll just start talking about
00:30the event. The first thing at the event was Mario Kart. Okay, the first thing, while we were waiting
00:39for the Mario Kart station to be ready, they let you wait around in just an area and look at the
00:46Switch 2. Like, they had all of the controllers, the consoles, the box art on display, and they
00:53also had places where you can hold the Switch 2 and just see how it feels. The magnets, they
01:00are really cool. Like, the way they just snap, it feels really good. The buttons, too. When you're
01:10holding the Joy-Con sideways, those shoulder buttons that were really small, they're bigger now, which is
01:16really good. Like, overall, just an improvement to hold. Yeah, I forgot to check. I wanted to check
01:28those little, like, nubs that people were worried will break easily. I didn't, I forgot to, like,
01:35check those, but I have a feeling they're pretty sturdy. Yeah, so once they did that, they sent you
01:42to the Mario Kart area. Well, there's actually, there's two Mario Kart areas. So, first, it was a
01:46bunch of TVs. They paired me up with a buddy. Um, they had us do, like, two races, uh, against each
01:54other on the TV, and then also two races just by ourselves in single player using the controller in
02:01handheld mode, because they wanted you to try all, like, the ways to use the controller. And then once that
02:07was done, they moved everybody to the second floor, where they had, um, knockout mode. So, 24,
02:16I get 20, yeah, 24 characters. They had 24 of us all do, like, a LAN mode, um, in knockout tour.
02:25Um, but, um, let me start with the, uh, single player. So, the game, it controls great. Um,
02:33like, I mean, you know, it's fun to play. It's Mario Kart. Um, I was able to do, so, for the demo,
02:41they had, you just, like, select a character, and then it would just put you into, like, a random race.
02:47Um, the first one I did was, um, I'll try to get an image, but it was, like, starting at the end of
02:54Toad Factory, and the path going to Bowser's Castle. It actually went through, there's a section that people
03:01think is Big Donut. The track actually went through that area, and in there, there was, like, a bunch
03:07of boom booms, um, as, like, obstacles. Um, I mean, I haven't really played a lot of Mario Kart 64.
03:18Um, I'm not that familiar with the layout of Big Donut, but, I mean, I don't think it was exactly
03:26Big Donut. Maybe I'm wrong, um, but I think it's possibly, it was just, like, inspired by Big Donut.
03:33Um, because I don't think the layout was exactly the same. Same for the area that people think is
03:38Thwomp Desert. Um, I didn't really see any thwomps there. It might just be a random sinkhole, but,
03:44I mean, I could be wrong. Maybe in battle mode, they will just call it that. Um, yeah, for that check,
03:50you'd go through Big Donut, and then you'd go up, like, a mountain, um, to get to Bowser's Castle.
03:58So that was one of the tracks I did. Um, another one was, um, going from starting at the end of Peach
04:06Beach and heading to Salty, Salty Speedway. That one was a lot of fun. Um, and when you were in Salty,
04:14Salty Speedway, there was a really great remix of Bianco Hills. Um, and also, while I was in
04:22handheld mode, um, I couldn't really hear what was happening on handheld mode, but there was, um,
04:29I could hear the TV, and it was just, like, looping the main menu. Um, where the title screen
04:37it was looping, and I could hear, like, it would play random songs. One of them was a remix of World
04:41Bowser from 3D World. So that song is getting a remix. Um, what else? There was another track. It
04:49was, I'm just trying to remember, because, like, I've been watching so much footage. Um, I'm like,
04:55okay, what is it? I'm getting mixed up. Um, one was SNES Mario Circuits to Peach Stadium. Um, so it was,
05:08like, a track just going through Moo Moo Meadows and an ending as, like, a loop around Peach Stadium.
05:15Um, that way, you went, like, through Moo Moo Meadows for a bit. Uh, so that one was also a lot
05:21of fun. And, yeah, I actually don't remember what the last track I did was. I mean, to be honest,
05:26one problem is that, like, because you're just going on, like, roads from a path to a track,
05:32um, they were sort of, like, blending together. That's not, like, saying the game is bad. Like,
05:38it was fun. Well, okay, the only thing that did stink, uh, they had, they had the demos in 100cc,
05:45which was just too slow for me. There were parts where I was driving, um, because, you know,
05:49it's primarily a straight line you're driving. Um, and there were parts where I was like, this is
05:53just too slow. Um, but I'm gonna say that's because they had everyone in 100cc.
06:00Um, so once that was done, they moved everyone to the second floor, and we did Knockout Mode.
06:07Um, they had everybody select a cup, um, and they had all eight of the Knockout Cups available.
06:13I was really hoping we would get the Cherry Cup, because that meant I would have been able to see
06:19these, uh, those Super Mario Land enemies. Uh, but unfortunately, we didn't, they, that one wasn't
06:24selected. And actually, before, um, they got everything set up, like, they had to make sure
06:31everyone was, like, in the game, selected their character. Um, I was able to do free, free roam
06:35for, like, one to two minutes just before it started. Um, I was randomly left, um, at Acorn Heights,
06:45so I could just, like, drive around that area. What I ended up doing was, because I know around
06:52Boo Cinema, there was an area that people said looks like the, uh, SNES Ghost Valley. Um, so I
06:59wanted to check that out. So I was able to, there was, like, a path from Acorn Heights to Boo Cinema.
07:04Um, on there, it was, like, uh, turned into, like, a spooky forest as I got closer to the cinema.
07:08Um, I passed by a moose. There are mooses in this game. And actually saw some shooting stars. Um,
07:18I didn't, like, see them falling from the sky, but they were, like, bouncing superstars on the track.
07:23Uh, sort of like how, um, in Mario Kart Double Dash, there is the, you know, stars will sometimes
07:30fall onto the track. It was like that, so I was able to, like, collect the stars. And then outside of
07:34Boo Cinema, there's, like, Ghost Valley platforms. So from my understanding, they're, like, just
07:39as, like, a reference to the track. The platforms are in the same layout as Ghost Valley's tracks.
07:47Um, but it's not, like, an official track. It's just, like, an easter egg. And that's the same for,
07:51like, the, uh, Vanilla Lake, um, reference, I'm assuming. Um, and there was a Choco Mountain, or,
07:57um, the, what, what, what are the Choco levels called in this SNES, um, Mario Kart? Chocolate
08:06Island, I think. Um, so yeah, that was fun. The, the knockout tour we ended up doing was the Cloud
08:12Cup. So that one started at DS Airship Fortress, um, and ended at Great Question Block Ruins. Um,
08:20I got, like, fifth place, so I wasn't able to race, uh, from Fairview Oasis to, or no,
08:27it was the, excuse me, so it ended at Great Question Block Ruins. Um, but I got knocked
08:35out right before starting that track, so I didn't really get to see it. But, um, everything
08:40else I did, and it was a lot of fun, you know, it started, we were launching off of DS Airship
08:46Forest, our DS Airship Fortress, and we went through that desert area that people think is
08:52Thwomp Desert. I mean, it could be, but I didn't see any Thwomps. There were Chain Chomps,
08:57instead. Um, but yeah, the knockout tour was definitely more fun, just the fact that it
09:03didn't end, um, and that was a lot of fun. I didn't really get to try the wall driving
09:09or the, um, what is it, the, the rail grinding. I didn't really get to try those, just the tracks
09:16I had. Um, I was trying to, like, win, and I couldn't really, like, see any, like, obvious
09:21places to try them. Uh, what I did actually get to try, um, and you're just, I didn't
09:27only have footage, um, because they, they told me I couldn't record footage, but I don't
09:32know how everyone else was able to record footage, but I mean, I didn't have anyone with
09:36me, so I, I couldn't have really recorded anything anyway. Um, but you're gonna have
09:44to trust me. I was able to do a, um, a dodge, a spiny shell with a mushroom, so I'm probably,
09:50like, the first non-developer to be able to do that in this game, and I wish, not even
09:56the Nintendo rep who was there watching me, he was just looking away, I guess, while that
10:01happened. I mean, he was, like, at each TV they had, like, um, like a representative
10:08watching you and giving you advice, telling you how to play, and also cheering you on.
10:11Every time I, uh, had, like, a mushroom and, like, skipped a huge part of the track, um,
10:17he would, like, say, oh yeah, good job, you're, you're doing great. Uh, but he just happened
10:21to be looking away when I did the blue shell dodge, so that was, but that, if you're wondering
10:27if that's still in the game, that is still possible. The timing, I mean, I don't know
10:31the exact timing, but I'm assuming it's about the same as it was in, like, 8 Deluxe.
10:35One part I really liked from that tour, uh, was when you're going from Crown City to
10:39the fairway oasis, um, the drawbridge is actually opening, and you jump over it, and that was
10:47really fun. And, uh, yeah, that was basically all I had. I wanted to play more of it. Um,
10:53I really wanted to try the free roam more, um, but, you know, that part of the event was
10:59pretty streamlined, so I couldn't do much. Um, after Mario Kart, they, they give you,
11:05on the screen, there's a time that says, your time to play Donkey Kong is, uh, for me, it was
11:101.20 p.m. So, after the Mario Kart section, they move you to a free play area, where you,
11:17they're, like, they give you, like, a pass, and you can try six games, and there's, like,
11:21a bunch of them. They had, like, the new Mario Party, um, they had, like, a bunch of the third
11:25party games, like the, uh, Yakuza and Cyberpunk. They actually said the Cyberpunk developers
11:30were there. Um, so, I tried, I really was curious to see how the mouse controls would
11:37work, so I tried, well, okay, the games I tried were Kirby, because I never actually
11:43played Forgotten Land. I played Dragon Drive, the wheelchair basketball game. I played the
11:49Civilization game they had. Um, I played Street Fighter VI. I played, and then the two different
11:57Mario Party sections they had, I played. So, they had the, um, the Bowser TV mode, and
12:02then they also had a section, it wasn't the rollercoaster mode, it was just, like, they
12:07had the myth, the mouse minigames on the minigame menu, and you could just try them. So, yeah,
12:13I'll start with the number one's Kirby. I never played Forgotten Land, but, I mean, you know,
12:17it was fun. It was Kirby. Um, I just played through one level that was enjoyable. Um, Drag X Drive.
12:24When I played the game, like, they had you do the tutorial, and then you did a 3v3,
12:29I had fun playing it, but I have no desire to play it again. Like, it actually, like, after one
12:37round, it made my arms tired. Like, I'm probably not gonna buy this game unless it's, like, $10 or
12:42something, because, I mean, okay, like, look, have you ever been to, like, an arcade, like, Dave & Buster's
12:47or something? Um, there's, like, a bunch of, um, arcade games, but, like, some of them,
12:53unless it's, like, maybe, like, one you really enjoy, but, like, you know that Flappy Bird
12:57arcade machine? Like, I'll play the Flappy Bird arcade machine and be like, okay, yeah,
13:02that was fun. I played it once or twice, but I have no desire to, like, have that arcade
13:07machine at my house, if that makes sense. Like, if you have the ability to try Drag X Drive,
13:13um, like, if they do a, uh, test roll or something, I would definitely suggest playing it
13:20at least once to try it, because, like, there is no other game that controls like that. But at the
13:27same time, like, unless there's, like, way more they're not showing, like, I know Arms had a, um,
13:33a pretty simple, uh, test punch, and then, like, there was some more stuff to do.
13:38Um, I just have no desire to play it again, but, like, I mean, it was fun playing it at least once.
13:46Yeah, the controls, I had a little bit of trouble with the controls, too. Like,
13:50I was trying to move forward, but, I mean, I must have just kept moving one arm up before the other,
13:57because it would, I'd keep, like, turning by accident to the right. Um, but that might have just
14:02beyond me not understanding the controls entirely. But, yeah, but I will say I also tried
14:08Civilization and got to use, because that, you just basically use it as a computer mouse.
14:15And when you're using the Joy-Con as a computer mouse, it works great. Like, obviously, I don't
14:20think people are going to be, like, throwing out their mice or whatever, like, computer mouse,
14:24um, and replacing it with a Joy-Con. But, like, if you're using it, it, it, like, works well. Like,
14:31the, um, L and R, the, the R and SR buttons, I forget what they're actually called, are used as
14:38the left and right click. And you, when you're holding it on the side, you use the, um, the joystick
14:44to actually, like, zoom in as, like, a scroll wheel. Um, and it, like, I played for 15 minutes. I never
14:50really played Civilization. But, I mean, like, you know, it was just, you know, the, the lady there
14:56was helping me, telling me, like, what to do, what everything meant. Um, but I was just, like,
15:02impressed. Like, as I was playing the demo, I was, like, forgetting that, like, I was using a Joy-Con.
15:08Like, I, like, would be, like, look over at my hand and be, like, oh, yeah, this is a, uh, this is a
15:14Joy-Con. It's not a computer mouse. Like, I just got, like, invested in the game and completely forgot.
15:19So, like, I, when you're using, like, I was confused. Like, and I had it on, like, a table.
15:25There wasn't a, um, they didn't have a mouse pad or anything. It was just on the table.
15:31Um, and it worked. Like, I was surprised at how well it worked. So, if you have, if there's a game
15:38that uses it as a computer mouse, I mean, it must, it, it works. Um, so I also tried, because the line
15:48was short, um, Street Fighter 6. And specifically the line for the motion controls. I never really
15:55played a Street Fighter. Fighting games aren't my thing. But, I mean, I mean, it was just, like,
16:01Street Fighter with motion controls. Um, I can't imagine any, like, pro players would be using
16:07it that way. But, I mean, that's something you can do. They worked about as well as motion
16:15controls in Street Fighter, what you'd expect. Um, all right. So, that was that. Um.
16:28Okay. So, that's four. So, yeah. The last thing I did was, I, they had, um, they had that, like,
16:34tech demo game. But, like, I, I had no desire to play that. You know, I mean, like, from what I've
16:40seen, it's just, like, a bunch of Unity tech demos. Um, I just had no desire. Um, and they had
16:48other things, like, they had, uh, Hogwarts Legacy. Um, they had, you could try the GameCube games.
16:54They showed off three in the trailer, but I, they had four when we were there. Um, one of them was
17:01Mario, Mario Strikers, the original. Um, so maybe that's gonna be at launch, too. Um,
17:10and, like, a few other things. Like, um, one thing that I, okay, so they had two sections
17:19for, um, Mario Party. One was just, they had the, the mouse minigames favorited on the minigame
17:27menu. Um, so there were just, like, six of them available. And, I mean, you know, they,
17:33he was using the control thing as a mouse. Um, there's one where you have to drag a toad
17:37through electricity. Um, and, you know, had to go through, like, checkpoints. It was almost like
17:42the Scary Maze game, like, in the way it controlled. Um, so, like, you know, those minigames
17:48were fun. Um, the Bowser TV mode, that's the one that doesn't use the Joy-Con as a mouse.
17:56That's the one that uses the camera. Um, so we did, uh, what is it? We had, like, Talking
18:06Flower Says, which was just, like, they put hats, like, Mario and Luigi hats on your player.
18:12And not your player, on you. On you, on, like, your, uh, copy of the, um, camera. Um, and the
18:18Talking Flower would say, like, uh, Mario duck. Uh, Luigi don't duck. So it was, like, Talking
18:25Flower Says. That was, like, pretty easy. Um, and the one where you stack Goombas on your
18:31head. And then the finale was where you had to, like, move around and make noise. And then
18:38Bowser would pick the winner. And then he would burn losers, actually. Uh, so, like, whoever
18:44lost, he would just, like, blow fire at them. And then the, uh, the people who lost, uh, they
18:50would just, like, act like, oh, oh, no! And, like, pretend they were getting burned. Um,
18:54so it was, like, it was cute. It was a enjoyable thing. And it worked pretty well. Like, I know,
19:04like, the Kinect wasn't really that accurate. But, like, I didn't really notice any, like,
19:09as long as you were standing in, like, the square, um, so the camera could see you. Um,
19:14like, one camera was able to see four people. Um, so, like, it worked. There was nothing,
19:19like, glitchy or anything about it. But, I mean, to get this small mode, you need the
19:28camera, which I don't even know how much the camera is. I think it's a lot. Um, the camera,
19:34the $20 upgrade. And, I mean, I just don't think the $20 upgrade for everything, for, like,
19:42a few more side modes, I don't think it's worth it. Because I don't think I'm gonna get the camera.
19:46Um, the mouse minigames, they were fun. Um, but, I mean, yeah, like, the mouse minigames,
19:56they work well. They were fun. But, I mean, unless all my friends really want to play the
20:01mouse minigames, I'm probably not gonna get that upgrade. Um, I just, it just doesn't seem worth it.
20:07Um, and, I mean, you need the upgrade plus the camera for the Bowser. And the Bowser mode was
20:13pretty short. Like, there was other, like, minigames that I didn't try, because I only did it
20:19once. But, I mean, I can't imagine it's something you're gonna want to be playing again and again.
20:24It's more like, try this once or twice. That was fun. Let's go back to regular Mario Party.
20:30I mean, it's always good that Mario Party gets more content. Um, and it's something for the camera,
20:35but, I mean, it's just not something I'm ever really gonna play again.
20:40So, finally, once that was done, I was actually done a bit earlier than 120. So, I just, you know,
20:46went early to Donkey Kong, so I didn't have to wait in line. Um, and I got to play for, like,
20:5115 to 20 minutes at Donkey Kong. And there was some guy, you know, helping me explaining it.
20:56It was the first half of, if you've seen the Treehouse, it was the first half of the first
21:02level. So, it ended, um, once you got to those, like, five bananas after the Golden
21:07Cave. Um, and then I would do the cutscene. Then it just dropped me to, like, a different
21:13level. Um, the level where Cranky Kong is in. Um, and it was just the first half of that
21:20level as well. So, it was shorter than what the Treehouse had. Um, and, I mean, I enjoyed
21:28playing it, but, like, my main enjoyment for it was, was just, like, breaking the terrain.
21:35Like, I probably spent more than half of my demo time just breaking the terrain. Like,
21:41I was fully prepared when I started. That little starting area they have you in, part of me
21:47really wanted to, like, spend the entire demo there just breaking everything. Like, literally,
21:53like, I, I get to that, like, open area where Cranky Kong was. I start, like, breaking the
21:58terrain, digging down. Uh, the person who was there actually said, like, a lot of people
22:02mentioned they wanted to try digging to bedrock. Like, specifically comparing it to Minecraft,
22:08which is very funny. How, like, digging to bedrock is just, like, a universally understood
22:13term now for, like, gamers. Like, everyone knows what that means. Um, but yeah, I was actually,
22:21like, digging under the terrain or, like, the starting area. And, like, there's a few
22:25treasure chests that give you, like, items. Um, they're not, like, I mean, like, they're,
22:30like, one-ups pretty much, an extra health, I guess. Like, a balloon that if you fall off,
22:36you can, uh, come right back. Um, and the camera, actually, there was, like, I was, like,
22:45making all kinds of caves randomly. Um, never had problems with the camera. Never at all. So,
22:52like, the camera is not going to be an issue for this game. Um, and I also tried, uh, there's
22:57parts with, like, little pools of water. I wanted to see if there was any, like, water physics. Like,
23:01what if I break it in a way where, like, water could, like, fall off the island? But there's,
23:07like, unbreakable terrain in a way where that won't happen. Like, all that would happen is the water,
23:13the pool of water would be a little bit bigger. But there's no way to, like, drain the water.
23:18Um, so that was kind of upsetting. But, I mean, it makes sense. And you won't ever get stuck. I
23:24didn't see this in the demo. I just didn't notice it. But there, apparently, there is a way to,
23:29like, bring back the terrain in the pause menu. So, if you somehow get stuck, I mean, I don't think
23:34you would because Donkey Kong can climb seemingly forever. But if you do get stuck, then you can always
23:39press that button. Um, and, like, it was fun. But, I mean, like, I didn't really enjoy, like,
23:48the actual game part of it. I mean, it was fine. It was, like, a 3D platformer. They're fun. And,
23:55like, if you get this, you can enjoy it. But, like, I don't think I'm gonna get this at launch
23:58unless there's, like, something new that they're not showing. Because I know there is the, um,
24:03there was that leaked thing that Nintendo of Korea, I think, posted with, like, baby Pauline.
24:10Um, so unless there's something more with that, I'm probably not gonna get this at launch,
24:15especially because it's $70. Like, yeah, the price is just so much. Um, and what else? I, um,
24:25when I had Donkey Kong, I got to try the new Pro Controller. And it felt really good. Like,
24:32the joystick specifically, it felt so smooth. Like, it was really good. Like, I was kind of,
24:38like, called off on getting the Pro Controller. But now I might have to get one at launch. Like,
24:44it just, it was really good. Um, if once they start having the demo stations at, um, like,
24:51Target and stuff for the Switch 2, I do think, um, if they have the Pro Controller, like, try it.
24:58See how it feels. Because, like, it, it really felt good. Um,
25:03and yeah, that was it. So after Donkey Kong, I left. Um, everyone there was, like, super nice.
25:10Um, and they gave me a free backpack. And even, uh, they were just like, hey, you want your picture
25:14in front of this, like, uh, Switch 2 thing? Um, so yeah, that was, it was just so much fun. It's a
25:20nice backpack, too. Um, and yeah, that was basically the event. It was a lot of fun. I am
25:27very happy I got to go. Um, and funny thing, as I was leaving the, um, so the event, it wasn't at
25:37the Nintendo store. It was, like, a few blocks away. They, they rented, like, a, um, like, there was
25:44just a building place you can, like, rent for events like this. They rented it. Outside, there
25:50was a huge protest, uh, for, like, um, Trump and Elon. I don't know exactly what it was
25:55for. Um, but a huge protest marching down the street. Like, the whole street was closed.
26:02And I was going in the opposite direction of the protest, um, just, like, walking on the
26:06sidewalk. It went on for a long time. Like, there was a lot of people, so it was crazy.
26:13Um, and yeah, I looked around the Nintendo. I'd been to the Nintendo store a few times,
26:20so, like, I didn't, like, need to go around everywhere. Um, apparently one of my friends
26:24told me, um, that they saw, like, a lot of people with Switch 2 backpacks, so they were
26:30hoping, um, they were hoping that I could get extras, but I couldn't get any extras for
26:35them. I'm sorry.
