00:00Along with the kinetic actions, for counter actions in the kinetic domain.
00:04Why are we talking physics in the middle of a military briefing about strikes on Pakistan and its terror infrastructure?
00:09Well, it's not just this briefing.
00:11The term kinetic, from the Greek word kinetikos, meaning motion, popped up quite often in statements and analyses around India's operation Sindhu.
00:21In military speak, kinetic refers to operations involving direct physical force.
00:26Kinetic actions are what we traditionally associate with war.
00:29Bullets, bombs, artillery, missile strikes, air raids, basically anything that causes visible, tangible destruction.
00:38Why even use a term like this? Isn't war just war?
00:42Well, in ordinary conflicts, this term helps separate physical military action from other forms of coercive steps a country might take to fight its adversary.
00:50These non-kinetic measures, comparatively newer in the history of warfare, can include cyber attacks, power grid disruptions,
00:56economic sanctions, or even diplomatic pressure.
00:59Let's put this in the context of the recent India-Pakistan conflict.
01:03These are some of the steps India took in the immediate aftermath of the April 22 per hellcap terror attack.
01:08Shutting down the Atariwaga border checkpost.
01:10Restricting the entry of Pakistani nationals into India.
01:12Expelling staff from the Pakistani High Commission.
01:15And most significantly, suspending the Indus Water Street.
01:18All these constitute non-kinetic moves aimed at damaging the adversary in ways that cannot be seen, literally speaking.
01:25Then came Operation Sindur, during which we saw precision hits on nine terror-leaked locations in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
01:33Artillery bombardment across the line of control.
01:36Counter-attacks to Pakistani drones and radars.
01:39And finally, missile and air strikes on Pakistani air bases.
01:44All these, as left-hand general Rajiv Gai put it, are actions in the kinetic domain.
01:49And the resulting damage was for all to see.
01:52Again, literally speaking.
01:54The stick to this side of the domain.
