Days after Islamabad and New Delhi agreed to a ceasefire, Pakistan promoted General Asim Munir to the rank of Field Marshal. The decision was made during a cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. Munir was felicitated in a grand ceremony attended by senior politicians and ministers, including Nawaz Sharif and Bilawal Bhutto Zardari.
"Today, we have gathered to pay our tribute to Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir," Shehbaz Sharif said at the ceremony.
The only other person to hold this rank in Pakistan was General Ayub Khan in 1959, a year after he seized power in a military coup.
