NFL owners are meeting this week to vote on a number of rule changes for the upcoming season,
00:05
but the big news is the headlines coming out today in regards to football and its future
00:11
across the globe. I'm Kyle Krabs with A to Z Sports and owners are set to vote this week on
00:20
playoff seeding and the dreaded tush push. But for my money, the biggest headline you will get
00:26
is the headlines that are coming out this afternoon. NFL players are going to be permitted
00:31
to play in the flag football Olympics competition. This is the NFL's first opportunity to take a huge
00:40
step forward in their global outreach initiatives of the past decade. Consider every year you're
00:47
seeing more and more games internationally. You're seeing teams being granted roster exemptions for
00:53
players that are international players that don't count against the 90-man rosters each and every
00:59
offseason. The goal, of course, is to expand the game across the globe and create as big of a footprint
01:08
and collect as many fans as you possibly can and in turn find the best talent to come play in your
01:14
league. This is the first chance that the NFL is going to get from a professional athlete level
01:20
to get those athletes out into a nation by nation competition. And while some owners across the league
01:29
might not like the idea of Justin Jefferson suiting up to play for the Stars and Stripes,
01:34
that is an individual decision that each owner and team and player is going to have to make
01:40
for themselves. But because of how big of a point of emphasis the NFL has tried to get the NFL out in
01:49
front of the global audience, having eligibility of your best players putting their skills on display
01:55
is going to serve as an excellent ambassador for the game of football. But that is not the only thing
02:01
that the owners are deciding this week. The Detroit Lions are going to have owners put to a vote a
02:07
proposed change on the seeding of teams in the playoffs. The incentive for those who support the rule
02:13
change is this. Too often at the end of the season, a team knows they're locked into a divisional
02:18
championship, but can't improve their seating to get the first round by. As a result, they take their
02:24
foot off the gas, coast to the end of the regular season, and the competitiveness and urgency that
02:30
you would like to have in a regular season contest is no longer there. I personally feel this one is a
02:36
little bit too much of an overreaction to what we saw with Minnesota versus Detroit in week 18,
02:41
where the Vikings fell to a wildcard team and then had to go on the road in the playoffs while the
02:47
Lions had their first round by. But there again, because of the recent change in the number of
02:53
teams that made the postseason, could be continued pathways forward for this kind of tweak to be made
02:59
in the years ahead. I just don't think we'll see this one come to pass in 2025. And that brings us to
03:06
the final vote in place, the tush push, which everybody in every corner of the football world
03:13
has an opinion on. Me personally, I hope they ban the tush push just so we can stop debating
03:19
about the merits of the tush push. But the current vote that's set to go in place, the owners staved
03:24
off making the vote when they had the first round of owners meetings after the NFL combine. The idea that
03:29
they're circling back to vote on it now gives me the impression that there was some politicking going
03:34
on behind the scenes. And predictably, I do think this play will ultimately have seen its last reps
03:40
taken and the owners will vote to disallow the tush push moving forward. They need 24 votes to
03:46
make it happen. So keep your eyes peeled for the timeline and keep your eyes peeled for the headlines
03:52
because as the owners make these final determinations, it will set in place the full set
03:58
of rules for which all teams will be playing in 2025.
