Anna Christie (1923) – A Silent Drama of Redemption and Family

“Anna Christie” is a 1923 American silent drama film directed by John Griffith Wray, based on Eugene O’Neill’s Pulitzer Prize-winning 1921 play. The story follows Anna Christie, a young woman who reunites with her estranged father, Chris Christopherson, a rugged coal barge captain. Having endured hardships in her past, Anna seeks a fresh start, but her father is determined to shield her from the rough world of sailors. When she falls in love with Matt Burke, a strong-willed sailor, she must confront her past and fight for acceptance. The film was the first adaptation of O’Neill’s play and was later remade in 1930 as Greta Garbo’s first sound film.
