Chichester-based Seagrass offers a new charitable concept to support young and emerging artists through the early stages of their career in music.

00:00Good morning. My name is Phil Hewitt, Group Arts Editor at the Sussex Newspaper. It's lovely to speak to Malcolm Guy this morning about a really exciting new charity in Chichester, Seagrass.
00:11Now, the idea behind it, well, Malcolm, I'll let you explain, but it's basically to support emerging musicians at a time that's never been more difficult for young musicians trying to make the breakthrough.
00:24Yeah, hi, Phil. Yeah, Seagrass is providing or it's going to provide grassroot support for emerging artists.
00:32We're looking to support artists creating original material, artists that are based on and around the South Coast.
00:41And why is it so tough at the moment then? And you say more tough than it's ever been?
00:46Well, I think it's always been tough for musicians, hasn't it? But for artists at the moment, a lot of them really struggle to get their music to market.
00:57It involves a lot of costs and recording and practicing and hiring musicians.
01:01And a lot of musicians that have an immense talent, unfortunately, just don't have the amount of money that's needed to get to get their music heard.
01:13Yeah. And to fund the Trinity, you're applying to trusts and grants, foundations, et cetera, but also doing a number of fundraising concerts.
01:21And you're kicking off with a really cracking one, aren't you, at the Wedgwood Rooms?
01:24Yeah, we are. We've got Matt Johnson from Jamiroquai, who's bringing four members of Jamiroquai with him.
01:31And he's giving us his album launch. So he's launching an album on the 9th of June.
01:37It's called Warrior Princess. And Matt will be performing the album for us at the Wedgwood Rooms on the 12th of June.
01:45Tickets are available and the proceeds from that are going to go to Seagrass, going to the charity.
01:53And hopefully that will then give us some funds that we can then start to allocate to local musicians and get some of this work going.
02:00Fantastic. Well, congratulations on it. It sounds a fantastic thing to do. All good wishes.
02:05Thank you very much, Phil.
02:06It should be a great success. Keep in touch. Thank you.
02:08Will do. Cheers.
02:10Cheers.
