05:01It's time for a new champion.
05:03It's time for a new champion.
05:05It's time for a new champion.
05:07It's time for a new champion.
05:09All right, champ. Circumstances are different for Orlando Salido as he comes into this fight.
05:14Now he's a champion, no longer underrated, but he feels that he does have something to prove.
05:20And he should. He should approach this fight just like he did the first fight.
05:25He is the hunter. Hunt down Juan Manuel Lopez because he's in his backyard.
05:31It's going to be hard to get a close decision here.
05:34He has to feel that he has to take it out of the judge's hands once again and stop this man in his track.
05:39The difference is he's the champion now. He knows how that feels.
05:44He told everyone that would listen that he would knock him out and take his title.
05:47He did that. This is a guy that's coming in with an enormous amount of confidence,
05:51and that's going to be the difference tonight.
05:53If he can do it once again, he'll be on everybody's map, and everybody has to pay attention to Salido.
05:59Salido with a lot of courage defending his title in Juan Manuel Lopez's backyard this time.
06:05Certainly one of the turning points of the first fight was the knockdown of Lopez by Salido in the fifth.
06:11Yeah, it really was. Overhead rights were raining onto Juan Manuel Lopez.
06:16This one in the fifth sent him to the canvas.
06:19And Lopez has been there before, and it's something we want to look for, perhaps, for both fighters in this fight.
06:28That knockdown leads us to tonight's Facebook poll and the past history of both Orlando Salido and Juan Manuel Lopez.
06:36In their careers, Salido and Lopez have been knocked down multiple times, including the one we just saw.
06:42Our question, how many knockdowns do you predict in tonight's Salido-Lopez rematch?
06:48No knockdowns, one knockdown, two knockdowns, more than two knockdowns.
06:53Visit our Facebook page and cast your vote right now.
06:56We'll have the results prior to our main event.

07:10So we're ready now for our opening bout.
07:13Unbeaten American featherweight Mikey Garcia looking to move closer to a title shot by taking on veteran contender Burnaby Concepcion.
07:25And a great atmosphere here in Puerto Rico as Concepcion prepares to enter the ring.
07:34Burnaby Concepcion, 24 years old, a former two-time featherweight world title challenger.
07:41At the age of 24, Burnaby is an 8-year pro. He made his debut in the Philippines at 16 years old.
07:49Yeah, he's got well over 30 fights, as you point out.
07:52And, you know, he's won 27 of 29 in his first 29 fights.
07:56But then, he's 2-3 in his last 5 fights.
08:00And one of the issues with him is that that has created maybe a loss of confidence in this young man.
08:06Yeah, you know, he's been in some hard fights. He's lost to some good fighters.
08:10And he's never been able to get over that hump.
08:12You know, it's hard to follow in a guy like Pacquiao's footstep.
08:16Sometimes, you know, that bar is just so high to reach.
08:19It's not that he can't fight, but a lot of people think it's a mental thing with him, Al.
08:24And, of course, Pacquiao is his manager. He and Michael Kanz handle his career.
08:28So, managed by Pacquiao, Burnaby was trained for several fights by 5-time Boxing Rider Association Trainer of the Year, Freddie Roach.
08:37But after 3 disappointing performances in a row, Freddie is no longer in his corner.
08:46Mikey Garcia, undefeated, 27 wins, 23 KOs, ranked No. 1 in the WBA, No. 2 in the WBC, No. 2 in the WBO, No. 8 in the IBF, and 126.
09:05And at age 24, he's a 5-year pro, considered by many observers, Al, to be one of boxing's top young prospects at any weight.
09:14I think I agree with that assessment 100%.
09:17You know, he's knocked out 11 of his last 12 opponents, which is interesting because by nature he's a counterpuncher, but he's an exciting counterpuncher.
09:26And the interesting thing about him, I think, is that at age 24, and we all saw it at the fighter meeting, and we've been around him in the past to see it,
09:34one of the most mature 24-year-olds you will ever meet.
09:37Definitely, Al. You know, he's solid. He's come from a pedigree of champions, you know, with his father being one of the most noteworthy trainers, as well as his brother being an ex-champion.
09:46I mean, this is the formula to building the perfect fighter, you know what I mean?
09:51And, you know, he's soaking it all in. He knows where he stands, and if he can all come together, he'll be one of the brightest stars out there.
10:01The genetics and the environment, a perfect storm for him to be a great fighter.
10:06So we're ready for Garcia Concepcion, and that brings us to the numbers in the tail of the team.
10:13As we look at these numbers, many of them are, of course, very, very similar.
10:18But, along with the height, there's one other number specifically to look at, and that is the reach.
10:24Garcia likes to fight tall. He uses his reach, and he wants to counterpunch, so the one-and-a-half-inch reach advantage could be significant for him.
10:32And the unified rules for tonight's bout.
10:34They are familiar, of course, no standing eight, no three-knockdown rule, only the ref can stop the fight.
10:39Letter can't be said by the bell in any round. The fight has to go four rounds for it to be official,
10:44and if it is stopped prior to those four rounds by a clash of heads or whatever, it would be a no decision.
10:50After that, they would go to the scorecards.
10:55So we're ready to get our first fight going. Let's go to the ring for the official introductions from Jimmy Lennon Jr.
11:05Ladies and gentlemen, good evening and welcome.
11:23Well, fans, we welcome you to our big night of action brought to you by Top Rank Inc. and PR Best Boxing
11:29in association with Tecate Con Caracter and Showtime.
11:34Ahora presentando un campeonato a diez asaltos, this championship attraction is sanctioned by the NABO supervisor Luis Perez
11:44and the NABF supervisor Joe Dwyer.
11:47Introducing to you our three judges, all from Puerto Rico, presentando a los jueces.
11:54Luis Gomez, Raul Nieves, and Nelson Vasquez.
12:00And our referee in charge of this bout, Luis Pabon.
12:06All right, fans, here we go. Ten rounds of boxing scheduled for the NABO and NABF Featherweight Championship.
12:17Introducing to you first, on my left, the challenger fighting out of the blue corner.
12:23Wearing red trunks with black trim, he weighed in at 125.5 pounds.
12:29Presentando en la esquina azul, tiene un peso de 125 libras y medio.
12:36With a record of 31 wins, 4 losses and 1 draw, he has 17 wins coming by way of knockout.
12:43Tiene un record de 31 victorias, 4 derrotas y 1 empate.
12:48Tiene 17 ganadas por la via del knockout.
12:52From Catanduanes in the Philippines, ladies and gentlemen, please welcome the two-time world title challenger.
12:59Aquí está el retador, Bernabé Concepción.
13:08And his opponent across the ring, the defending champion, fighting out of the red corner on my right.
13:14Wearing black trunks with red trim, he weighed in at 126 pounds.
13:19Su oponente en la esquina roja, pesando 126 libras.
13:25Undefeated in his campaign with a record of 27 wins, no losses, 23 wins coming by way of knockout.
13:33Su record, 27 victorias, sin derrota, con 23 ganadas por la via del knockout.
13:40From Moreno Valley by way of Oxnard, California, he is ranked number 2 in the world by the WBO and WBC.
13:48Number 1 by the WBA, here is the NABO and NABF featherweight champion,
13:55the undefeated Miguel Ángel Mikey García.
14:05And offering in charge, now to give instructions, Luis Pavón.
14:12One, just one.
14:22I give you instructions in your corner.
14:24Let's have a clean match, okay? Good luck.
14:30So the last time we saw Bernabé Concepción on Showtime in Puerto Rico,
14:36he knocked down Juan Manuel López in the first round.
14:40His confidence was soaring.
14:42In the second round, the then champion ended up stopping him.
14:47For Mikey García, what a stepping stone this could be.
14:52According to what we've heard, if he wins this fight, there's a good chance that he can take on the winner
14:58of our main event between Salido and Juan Manuel López.
15:03Fatima, the wife of Miguel García.
15:08Hope in her eyes as we start the first round.
15:16These kind of stepping stones, gentlemen.
15:18Al, such an interesting thing to watch for a young fighter like Mikey García,
15:25knowing that if he gets past this hurdle, the whole boxing world may open up to him.
15:30And for some fighters, it might be a distraction or something that might alter his career.
15:36Alter his concentration and make him complacent.
15:39Certainly not García.
15:41He is, as we pointed out, mature beyond his years.
15:44Has a very methodical and really excellent approach to the sport.
15:50Yeah, but a lot of times for a young fighter, you know, that's a lot of pressure.
15:53It's a lot of weight.
15:54I mean, you cannot look at that big picture.
15:56You have to stay focused on the guy in front of you.
15:59For a perfect example, López.
16:02You know, the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, but no one told Salido.
16:08So, García.
16:12Coming off a fourth round knockout win against Juan Carlos Martínez in his last fight on October 22nd.
16:18He had a great amateur background in 2005.
16:21National PAL champion, 2004 National Junior Golden Gloves champion at 132.
16:29You know, Bernabe Concepcion is a fighter who is always dangerous.
16:35And García made the point.
16:37He pointed out the knockdown of López.
16:41And Concepcion is an aggressive fighter who wants to try and pressure the counterpuncher, García.
16:47But he has to do it in a very smart way.
16:51In his previous fight on May 6th of 2011.
16:55Concepcion lost an 8-round split decision against Juan Martínez.
17:00Prompting Freddy Roach to abandon Manny Pacquiao's fighter.
17:14Both fighters taking their time, trying to feel each other out.
17:17What's going through their minds right now, Antonio?
17:19Well, right now it's definitely a fill-out round.
17:21Like you said, García is poised to be so young.
17:24He's poised past his years.
17:26And this is what you want to see.
17:28You know, the next couple rounds, you'll see him open up a little bit.
17:31Start jabbing, throwing combinations to the body and things like that.
17:35And Concepcion right now is just trying to see what he's going to bring to the table.
17:39He's trying to feel those punches.
17:40His power on those gloves and the punches that he's not landing.
17:45Concepcion now looks a lot more disciplined in the first round.
17:49Compared to when we saw him in the first round against Juan Ma.
17:54Yeah, and he's fighting a different kind of fighter, which helps him.
17:56I think against a counter-puncher, he can be a little more...
17:59You know, he can get his rhythm in a fight.
18:01And he's doing that in this fight.
18:03García getting a little closer as the first round comes to an end.
18:07Schedule for 10.
18:14So García takes his seat on the stool in his corner.
18:17Al Bernstein, what are the keys to victory?
18:19Well, he did it in the first round.
18:21That is establishing a jab.
18:23And we see that he is going to take his time.
18:25He's got a guy that fights at his own pace.
18:27And the right hand, when he decides to drop it, is a very powerful punch.
18:33And for Bernabe Concepcion, he wants to be busy.
18:38Wasn't maybe as busy as he would have liked in round one.
18:42And when he's coming in, he's got to move his head and not get hit with those counter-punches.
18:46And then he's got a very good left hook to both the body and the head.
18:49Those would be effective.
18:56And that's Benji González, who is in the corner of Bernabe Concepcion.
19:03Who did move in for Freddy Roach.
19:05And it was a situation where Concepcion really wanted a Filipino trainer to be with him.
19:12And first another trainer, and then now González.
19:16And so he feels more comfortable, I think, with a Filipino trainer working with him.
19:22This is the second round scheduled for ten in the featherweight division.
19:26That's 126 pounds.
19:28Bernabe Concepcion is in the red and black trunks.
19:31He is the journeyman fighter who's had opportunities but has never been able to get to the next level.
19:37Meanwhile, the contender, Mikey Garcia, in the black trunks.
19:42This, the big step-up fight for him.
19:44A championship fight could be next if he can take care of business this evening in Puerto Rico.
19:58Michael Kanz, who along with Pacquiao manages Bernabe Concepcion,
20:02said that, you know, he has to really approach these fights with more confidence than he's been.
20:07And one of the things about fighting a counterpuncher like this,
20:10it at least gives you the chance to get your bearings in a fight
20:13and maybe develop some, build some confidence over the first few rounds.
20:17And you're absolutely right, Al.
20:18But if Concepcion is here to win this fight, he cannot allow Garcia to fight at his pace.
20:23Yeah, I agree.
20:24He's gonna have to press him.
20:25He's gonna have to put him in uncomfortable waters in order to really rattle this young kid.
20:29Yeah, I agree.
20:30Yeah, that's true.
20:31Antonio, it seems as if you don't like the pace that Garcia is establishing right now
20:35as he tries to land the straight right in.
20:37Oh, no, the pace is perfect for him.
20:39But I'm saying for Concepcion, if he wants to win this fight,
20:42he's gonna have to dictate the pace.
20:44Pressure, pressure, pressure.
20:45You can't let this guy, he's too good of a boxer to just sit in the pocket and do what he wants to do.
20:53Concepcion's only thrown, uh, in the last round, he only threw 22 punches.
20:59He's only thrown 33 so far in this fight, according to Shell's stats.
21:02So that's not the kind of numbers he wants to put on the board in terms of activity.
21:08Garcia also talked about the overhand right of Concepcion,
21:11which is also, there's the solid right by Garcia.
21:14He's starting now to drop that punch in.
21:17Garcia training for this fight in Riverside, California at Indian Willy's Gym.
21:23It's the same gym where Chris Areola trains and Josito Lopez.
21:28He's been going up to Big Bear as well for the last two or three weeks.
21:33Coming into this fight.
21:40Big Bear's such an interesting place, Al.
21:42Why do so many fighters love going there?
21:44They started with Oscar De La Hoya for the most part and Shane Mosley,
21:47and, uh, it's just serenity up there and they can get away from the hubbub of cities
21:55and, uh, do a good job.
21:58Nice sharp left hook by Garcia, tight defense by Garcia.
22:02And Antonio, what are the strengths of Mikey Garcia?
22:07Well, what I see so far is sometimes he has a, that's a good counterpunch by Concepcion.
22:11He needs to do a lot more of that.
22:12I see a strong power jab that you don't see a lot of young fighters possess.
22:17I mean, this jab is like a punch almost, and it stops his opponent in his tracks.
22:29Okay.
22:39Okay, you gotta keep working the jab and then hit with the right.
22:46The punches will start coming.
22:48You just gotta start measuring him up correctly.
22:51Mikey Garcia using that jab that Antonio talked about and doubling with it,
22:58and that sets up the beautiful right hand.
23:00Garcia has power in that punch.
23:02And if Concepcion stays on the end of these punches during this fight,
23:08he's gonna be in trouble.
23:11Mikey Garcia is the younger brother by 11 years,
23:14a former IBF junior lightweight world champion.
23:18Robert Garcia, who was also, as mentioned, his trainer.
23:24And the Garcia family, as Antonio alluded to, kind of a royalty in boxing,
23:28the first family in boxing.
23:30Eduardo Garcia, the dad, who trained Fernando Vargas.
23:33Robert Garcia, now a renowned trainer, who trains Brandon Rios,
23:37among the other fighters, Nonito Donair, Antonio Margarito.
23:40And also Robert's brother, Danny, who trains Victor Ortiz,
23:45who we will see on our network in a terrific rematch against Andre Berto.
23:51Third round, scheduled for 10 in the 126-pound weight class featherweights.
23:58Mikey Garcia in the black trunks.
24:03Burnaby Concepcion of the Philippines in red.
24:15As we take a look at some of your Twitter posts,
24:20one of the new innovations here at Showtime.
24:24We are nothing if not interactive here at Showtime.
24:29And don't forget, tweet us, trend us, Facebook us.
24:36I don't know how to do any of that.
24:40Antonio is the master of tweeting, are you kidding me?
24:46You know, we see by Garcia, you know, that he controls the tempo of fights.
24:52And there was a nice right hand by Burnaby Concepcion.
24:55And he's trying to sneak in those power punches.
24:58But as you said, Antonio, this is not the way Concepcion needs to make this fight.
25:04You can't let Garcia just dictate the pace.
25:06No, you can't.
25:07And another thing I see, you know, Gus alluded to, what does this guy have?
25:11He has a really tight defense.
25:13It's going to be very hard to open him up.
25:15You know, he reminds me of a young Oscar De La Hoya.
25:18He's not as fast, but he's tight, and it's hard to get through his defense.
25:22He's got something Oscar De La Hoya had trouble with early.
25:25He knows his identity as a fighter, 100%.
25:28You know, even though he's a counterpuncher, he throws 65 punches a round.
25:32That's what he averages according to show stats.
25:34And that's a lot for a counterpuncher.
25:39Nice stiff jab by Garcia.
25:44Concepcion missing with the countering right.
25:47Now goes to the body with the right hand, chopping him down.
25:49Ooh, stinging right hand by Garcia that time.
25:53The one-two very effective in this round.
25:56Concepcion is doing a lot of aggressive good stuff, being aggressive in this fight.
26:01But it seems like, in this round, but it seems like Garcia is not allowing him to set up.
26:07He's going to have to be ready to punch at all times.
26:11Fans not happy with the lack of action.
26:15Here in the third round.
26:22Now we will go to the corner of Burnaby.
26:25The real deal, Concepcion.
26:41You're going to miss in his combination.
26:43You're going to miss in his punch.
26:45Okay?
26:46One.
26:47Look at our punch.
26:49It's in front of you.
26:50Don't let go of your hand.
26:52Okay?
26:53Don't let go.
26:54Okay?
26:58And as you mentioned now, Burnaby wanted a trainer that was Filipino
27:05to really establish a closer relationship and be with him more often.
27:09And to be training in the Philippines as well,
27:12which is where he trained for this in Benji Gonzalez in his first fight with him.
27:15There was another trainer prior to this who came in after Freddy.
27:19And now Benji there with him.
27:23And the training in the Philippines they thought was important.
27:26He rented an apartment, Concepcion did, just a block away from the Flash Elorde Center
27:32where he was training to try and really connect with his boxing training.
27:40Burnaby Concepcion in the red.
27:43Mikey Garcia out of Oxnard, California.
27:48Born in Ventura, California.
27:51In black, undefeated, 23 KOs.
27:56Scoring 11 of his last 12 by way of knockout.
28:02Coming into this round, Garcia had landed 29 punches.
28:0522 of them were jabs.
28:08He's continued to use the jab here in this round.
28:11And you just know that the right hand is following.
28:14As you take a look at total punches.
28:16Yeah, a big edge for Garcia, both in terms of what is landed and thrown.
28:24Not landing at a huge percentage, Garcia.
28:26And that's not as good a percentage as he normally lands.
28:30Garcia, getting very close to dropping a big right hand on Concepcion.
28:38He's missed by inches.
28:43You know, against Matt Remillard, I'm sorry Antonio.
28:46Against Matt Remillard, when he fought him, both his brother Robert and dad
28:54both thought that he should go after Remillard a little earlier than he did.
28:58And he didn't.
28:59He said, no, no, I'll know exactly when he's not dangerous anymore and I'll get him out.
29:03And he got him out in the 10th round.
29:05And maybe this fight is similar.
29:07You know, he's drawing Concepcion in to the moment when he feels like he can hurt him.
29:12Nice countering right hand by Concepcion.
29:15And Concepcion needs to do more of the counterpunching.
29:18I was going to make a statement that the jab is the difference in this fight.
29:22Because Concepcion seems like he's not reaching Garcia with the jab.
29:27Like there, he's not reaching him.
29:28He's not getting close enough with the jab.
29:30And look at the difference in Garcia's jab.
29:32He's snapping his head back.
29:33He's close enough to be able to come back with one or two more punches.
29:37That's a great point.
29:38That's why the Garcia right's getting in from time to time.
29:40Now Garcia moving forward.
29:43Another straight right hand sends Concepcion back to the ropes.
29:52Garcia trying to find his range with the jab.
29:56Nice hook to the body by Mikey Garcia.
30:01Defense so tight.
30:07Lead left hook.
30:09Blocked by Concepcion.
30:1210 seconds.
30:24Heavy left hook.
30:26May have gotten around the guard of Concepcion as the round comes to an end.
30:32We've talked about the jabs of Garcia.
30:36And they've come in bunches.
30:38And you'll see three of them in a row.
30:41They slight left hook there.
30:43And now he's going to jab again.
30:45And keep that punch out there.
30:47And at the end of the round, Concepcion started to get something done offensively.
30:52But again, what he ran into was the counter punching of Garcia.
30:57And there he gets hit with the first left hook.
31:00And then there'll be another one here closing out the round.
31:02That last one did some damage to Concepcion.
31:30We head to the fifth round scheduled for twin.
31:33In the featherweight division, 126 pounds.
31:37Garcia in black.
31:39The contender trying to make the quantum leap to a title shot.
31:43With a win this evening in Puerto Rico.
31:47Against a journeyman in Burnaby Concepcion with the red and black trunks.
31:54There's that right by Garcia.
31:56We talked about the boxing family of Garcia.
31:59But Concepcion had two brothers who were pro boxers.
32:02And his dad was a pro boxer for a while.
32:04So there's lots of boxing in his family as well.
32:09And gentlemen, it looks as if we're seeing a more conservative Burnaby Concepcion.
32:14At this particular point in the fight.
32:16Not willing to take the kind of risks that we've seen before.
32:20Yeah, and that can be a contributor to the fact that, like again, his confidence is not all there.
32:26And then he's probably tasted Garcia's power.
32:29I mean, even when those punches don't land, they land on the glove.
32:32And they land on the arms.
32:34You can feel that this guy is a solid puncher.
32:37Our fans on Twitter taking note of the jab of Garcia and how effective it is.
32:43It's a heavy jab.
32:51And Antonio, how long does it normally take in a fight between two in shape fighters for that distance to start closing?
32:59Well, you know, right now with Garcia.
33:01He's had his way in this fight.
33:03And this is what the difference between a superstar and a future champion.
33:08I mean, you have to close the show.
33:10This guy's not giving him any real resistance.
33:13He needs to step on the gas a little bit.
33:15Start sitting down on his punches.
33:17Getting a little bit closer.
33:18And landing some hard shots.
33:19Seeking to get this guy out of there.
33:21If he can stop Concepcion in the next couple rounds.
33:24That would pose well for him moving forward into the championship fight.
33:29Ooh!
33:30A right hand lands.
33:31Followed by a right cross.
33:34Now Garcia.
33:37Moving ever so closer.
33:41I think that last right hand was an important moment in this fight.
33:45And maybe the best punch that Garcia has landed.
33:48And for the first time, Concepcion looks like he's really on his heels.
33:53Another lead left hook by Garcia.
33:57Garcia with so much leverage on his punches out.
34:00And so much patience.
34:02To be such a young fighter.
34:04You see the amateur background.
34:06Great technique.
34:07And he's a thinking fighter in there.
34:09Yeah, a little bit more.
34:10A little bit too patient.
34:12When you look at all the great Puerto Rican fighters.
34:15Guys like Trinidad.
34:16I mean, these guys was great finishers.
34:18Great closers.
34:19And that's what you need to be.
34:21The mark of a superstar in boxing.
34:24You gotta be a great closer.
34:31Five rounds.
34:34In the books.
34:35Virginia Garcia.
34:37Mikey's mom.
34:38She doesn't come to too many fights.
34:40This is a rarity for her.
34:43She's, she has been, she's seen her, you know, her son Robert as a champion.
34:49And now also Mikey as well.
34:52And we look at Garcia.
34:53That was that important right hand in the last round.
34:56And, you know, he lands these big power punches.
34:59And I think what Antonio's pointing out is when you got a guy like that.
35:02Maybe you want to go after him.
35:04But we'll hear what Robert says.
35:06And that's Robert Garcia.
35:08You see him leaning in.
35:09A former IBF lightweight, junior lightweight champion.
35:13Dad Eduardo leaning in who trained Fernando Vargas.
35:16And I mentioned there are other, the brother Danny who trains Victor Ortiz.
35:22So this family has lived and breathed boxing for a long time.
35:36We head into the sixth round.
35:40Mikey Garcia in black.
35:43Burnaby Concepcion in the red and black.
35:47There have been no knockdowns in this fight so far.
35:53Concepcion coming out trying to fire the jab.
35:56But taking big counter punches for his trouble.
36:02Josh Barnett.
36:04Cormier coming up.
36:07The big strike force.
36:08Heavyweight showdown.
36:10Grand Prix coming to an end.
36:12Cormier breaking his hand.
36:14So it took a little longer for this tournament to conclude.
36:20That's going to be a lot of fun.
36:21And right now, it seems to me, Antonio Garcia is serious about trying to end this fight.
36:25Yeah, he is.
36:26But he's doing a lot of head hunting.
36:27I mean, he has to dig something downstairs to the deadlift.
36:30He listens to you.
36:32Yeah, but you look at this guy's leverage on his punches.
36:35This is the mark of a good puncher that can generate that type of knockout power.
36:40Leverage.
36:41He's never off balance.
36:4211 out of the last 12.
36:43That speaks to it.
36:45Concepcion.
36:51Allowing himself to be in the corner.
36:53Let's bring in Chuck Tiampa for the unofficial Showtime Scorecard.
36:57Chuck.
36:58Yes, this is a classic example.
37:00Garcia is a classic example of building his arsenal round by round.
37:06He started with just a jab.
37:08Working off the jab.
37:09Doing good counterpunching.
37:10And now he's working the body.
37:12Each round, he's getting stronger and stronger.
37:14I've got to shout out for Garcia.
37:17Concepcion's mouth open now.
37:20He may be fatigued as he fights off the ropes and back to the center of the ring.
37:26In his last fight against Aaron Garcia, who was a very good amateur fighter,
37:31but came in with a 10-2 record,
37:33a split decision, Concepcion.
37:35There's a nice right hand by him.
37:37But it was a struggle.
37:39And that maybe was an indication that for him to get back to fighting these elite fighters is tough for him.
37:46And right now, he's not faring well against Garcia.
37:50If I had any type of critiquing to do against Garcia,
37:55I would say that he doesn't go to the body nearly enough.
37:58And if you're going to fight the guys like Lopez and Salido,
38:02you have to break these guys down.
38:03You just can't depend on the head shots.
38:20One thing you can't say, guys, is Concepcion has been so defensive tonight.
38:27Not as many openings as a fighter.
38:32Now, don't forget, coming up next, our main event, it's the rematch.
38:41Juan Manuel Lopez trying to regain his title against Orlando Salido.
38:50That should be so exciting.
38:52The first fight was tremendous down here.
38:54And we're happy to have Antonio with us for this one.
38:56You're going to enjoy this.
38:59This crowd's certainly ready in anticipation.
39:03They've filled up most of this arena, virtually every seat.
39:07It's the Roberto Clemente Coliseum, a revered place for boxing in Puerto Rico.
39:14And they are hoping that their man can win back the title.
39:18So many superstars of boxing in attendance tonight.
39:21And one thing that we learned, Muhammad Ali fought here once upon a time.
39:26Against Jean-Pierre Koopman, and he's the idol of Juan Manuel Lopez,
39:32who pointed out, hey, Ali lost five times.
39:34You can lose and still be a great fighter.
39:37Even Antonio Taffer lost.
39:41Now, let's see if Mikey Garcia in black starts to step up the pace.
39:48Here in the seventh round, scheduled for ten in the featherweight division, 126 pounds.
39:53Concepcion moving his hands now.
39:56Hooking off his jab, trying to land the right cross.
39:59Blocked, though, by Garcia.
40:03And how important is it to not only win, guys, but to look good when you're winning?
40:09Oh, at this stage, it's very important because, you know, you only win in your last fight.
40:13Let me say that again. To look spectacular when you're winning.
40:15I mean, it's very important for a young guy, making his mark at the title.
40:19You know, he can really go in there, and if he's looking great,
40:23it'd be better for him at the negotiation table.
40:25You know, I mean, he can gain more fans.
40:27The networks are gonna love him even that much more.
40:30So, everything is predicated on how he looks.
40:33And, Al, if you don't look great, will the networks go up to you and say,
40:37hey, you know, you won, but you didn't look great?
40:40Well, you know, yeah, I mean, I think the thing about Mikey Garcia is that
40:44he's the kind of fighter who will all of a sudden create a...
40:47Well, we're gonna have a stoppage here, so let's take a look.
40:50It's for the glove, some tape from the glove from Burnaby Concepcion,
40:55and they will take it off. It's gonna be okay taking it off.
40:58So I think Mikey Garcia is not the kind of fighter who is a crazy all-action fighter,
41:02but what he hopes for is a fighter that will at least be somewhat aggressive to him
41:08so he can land those big counterpunches.
41:10And I know what you're saying, Al.
41:12Bring the best out of this guy. Make this guy fight.
41:15Because as long as he's on cruise control like this, I mean, why should he come out of his shell?
41:19But, like I said, with me, it was always about my performance.
41:24Oh, my. Well, there's some marketing right there for us.
41:27And what that was, it was a clean one-two punch.
41:30Concepcion didn't see it. It caught him on the top of the temple,
41:33and that almost got him out of there.
41:37So Concepcion in trouble.
41:41As Garcia moves in, Concepcion on his heels.
41:46A minute and four to go in the round.
41:48Long way to go in this round, and Concepcion in some trouble.
41:52Left hook catches Concepcion again, followed by a stiff right hand.
41:56Now he pounds the body.
41:59Garcia trying to put him away here in the seven.
42:04Yeah, he might not get him right now. He may get him right now,
42:06but Concepcion looks like he's on his way out of here.
42:11And when he came out of this round, he came out with the intensity,
42:14but he could not sustain it, Concepcion.
42:17He threw a couple combination punches.
42:19Concepcion on the ropes. They may stop it, and they do here in the seven.
42:26Good stoppage.
42:29And no complaints from Burnaby Concepcion, and joy for the Garcias.
42:41A solid, really a solid young fighter.
42:44You know, he lures you in on that string, and then ultimately cuts the string,
42:49and you are done.
42:50But what I see more than anything is a discipline.
42:55Yeah.
42:56At 24 years of age, when you consider his amateur background,
43:00and who his dad and his brother are,
43:04and are associated with wonderful, wonderful prospect here.
43:09He definitely is, Gus.
43:10And like I said, he's a prototype of a perfect fighter.
43:14I mean, until somebody really pushes him and makes him come out of that shell,
43:19I don't know how he's going to be able to be beaten.
43:21And if he fights the winner of tonight's fight, he'll be facing an aggressive fighter.
43:25Now, here is where he got Burnaby Concepcion in big trouble.
43:29The straight right hand, this will be the knockdown,
43:31and the right hand had landed.
43:34In fact, that was one of 20 of 34 power shots he landed in that last round.
43:40So that was very impressive.
43:41Look how crisp this 1-2 is.
43:42Right there on the top of the temple, and that's the one that almost turned out the lights.
43:471-2.
43:48Beautiful.
43:50Great technique.
43:51And Fatima, his wife, extremely happy at this, and why not?
44:01So his wife and his mom in the crowd tonight.
44:05And then this is where the fight would be stopped.
44:08Referee Louis Pabon feeling that Burnaby Concepcion was not able to handle himself.
44:15At the stoppage, no complaints from Concepcion.
44:19And I think he understood he had been overpowered by this young man
44:23who gets now 12 out of his last 13 fights as knockouts.
44:30All right, let's make it official.
44:31Here's Jimmy Linton, Jr.
44:36Ladies and gentlemen, we have the time of 2 minutes, 33 seconds in round number 7.
44:42El tiempo, 2 minutos, 33 segundos.
44:46And round number 7, referee in charge, Louis Pabon stops the contest.
44:51The winner by way of technical knockout and still undefeated,
44:57Miguel Angel Mikey Garcia.
45:08Mikey Garcia continues his knockdown opponents in 12 of his last 13 fights.
45:17And he was patient from the very beginning, establishing the jab,
45:20waiting to lower the right cross.
45:22He did as we take a look at our show stats.
45:25And as you look at these, while Garcia landed a little bit of a less percentage than he normally does,
45:31what you see is that he controls fights and he dominates them.
45:35And you have to really understand that this is a very patient fighter
45:39who is going to explode at some point during a fight.
45:42And he did it here again tonight.
45:44And he has tremendous leverage on his punching power.
45:46I mean, but I like to see him go to the body a little bit more,
45:49get those hard shots downstairs and make that knockout come a little bit more easier.
45:53All right, let's go inside the ring where Jim Gray is standing by with the contender.
45:58All right, Gus, thank you very much.
46:00Mikey, congratulations to you.
46:01You were very patient tonight.
46:03Are you happy with the way you performed?
46:05I'm happy.
46:06I'm happy with the victory.
46:07We came here to win.
46:08I performed well.
46:09I think I showed everybody my skills.
46:12And I was able to put them out when the time was ready.
46:16Do you feel he gave you much resistance tonight?
46:19Well, he was hungry to win.
46:21He came to win.
46:22That's why he was able to last there a couple of rounds.
46:27I think if I might have put on pressure a little bit earlier,
46:30it might have been a different fight, maybe more of a brawl.
46:33But I think we fought the correct fight.
46:37And he was able to stay in there a little longer.
46:38He was hungry to win.
46:39He didn't want to go down very easily.
46:41So he was able to make it a little longer.
46:43Well, you're 28 and 0 now.
46:44Let's take a look and tell us, Mikey,
46:46what happened here with the knockdown here in the seventh round.
46:51I started connecting that right hand, that one.
46:53That's the one that hurt him.
46:55And I had connected it earlier,
46:57but it didn't really hurt him until that punch there.
47:00He was making a miss a couple of times also, ducking under it.
47:04But when I landed that one, it was just the perfect shot.
47:06And now we jump to the end of the fight with your onslaught.
47:10Well, once he was hurt, as you can see,
47:12I started landing combinations on him.
47:16It was just accumulation of punches at that moment.
47:19I just wanted to put him out.
47:20I felt that he didn't want to be in there anymore.
47:22And I just had to land a couple combinations to finally stop him.
47:26Mikey, we've got a big fight coming up now with Lopez and Salido.
47:29Would you like to face the winner?
47:30Are you ready for that?
47:31Of course I would like to face the winner.
47:32I would like to face any of the champions at 126.
47:35Anybody want to give me a title shot, I'm there for you.
47:38I think I'm game for anything now.
47:40Congratulations.
47:41We look forward to your next fight.
47:42Congratulations, Mikey.
47:44Gus, back to you.
47:46And thank you very much, Jim.
47:48Here's how the judges scored this fight.
47:51Al?
47:54As we look at the time of the stoppage here,
47:56clearly everybody scoring it a shutout.
47:59And I think that if you ever can make a case for a fight being a shutout,
48:02this was it.
48:03Mikey Garcia controlling every single round.
48:08Now let's bring in a long-time championship boxing judge,
48:11Chuck Giampa, for his take.
48:13Chuck, how did you score Garcia Concepcion?
48:15I agree with you.
48:16I had a complete shutout for Garcia.
48:18Very interesting, just prior to the last round,
48:22Concepcion actually was vomiting in his corner.
48:27So he didn't look like he was taking a lot of body punches,
48:32but he was really worn down and the end was inevitable.
48:35So Mikey Garcia, only 24 years old, remains undefeated.
48:39He was patient, disciplined,
48:42and ended up doing exactly what he planned to do from the very beginning.
48:48And here's another look at our Facebook poll for tonight.
48:51In their careers, Orlando Salido and Juan Manuel Lopez
48:54have been knocked down multiple times,
48:56with Salido having dropped Lopez once in their first fight.
48:59How many knockdowns do you predict in tonight's Salido-Lopez rematch?
49:04No knockdowns, one knockdown, two knockdowns, more than two knockdowns.
