00:00Pop it. Pop it. Smash it. Smash it. That's the way, every day, you can play Beat the Clock.
00:16And now, here's the star of the all-new Beat the Clock, Monty Hall.
00:38Hello there. How are you? It's good to see you all, and thank you for coming, and welcome to Beat the Clock, a wonderful way to start the day.
00:46Very good skill shown by our contestants. Very nice amounts of money shown by us when we do things right.
00:52And what happens on Beat the Clock? Two couples play against each other, and they play against our famous clock for all this money, and they're waiting to play.
00:59Jack Nars is waiting to tell us who they are.
01:00Well, our returning champions, Monty, have won $14,800 so far. Jerry and Marlene Beck.
01:09Challenging them from Canyon Country, California, Clint and Linda Means.
01:13Hello, Clint. Linda. Nice to meet the challengers. Now, you're the green team for the day, and tell me something about yourself, Clint.
01:22I'm a schoolteacher at the Los Angeles City Schools, and I'm a part-time salesman and father of two lovely children.
01:28Part-time salesman trying to augment the income that a schoolteacher makes, I presume.
01:32Yes, sir.
01:33That's the fact of life, right? Well, I hope that we'll augment it here today for you, too.
01:36What grades do you teach?
01:37Junior high school.
01:38Well, tough years. Right? You're very right about that.
01:42Yes, I know. But they're the very good years where you're going to fashion them for future life, so good luck to you.
01:47And Linda, what do you do while he's teaching?
01:48I'm an aug-benner, too. I'm a teacher, also.
01:51Part-time or full-time?
01:51I'm a full-time teacher.
01:53Where do you teach?
01:54And in Granada Hills at Van Gogh School, high room 20.
01:58High room 20. What grades?
02:00Sixth grade.
02:01So you feed him right into him, right?
02:03She prepares him, and you get all the bad product of her work.
02:06Well, I don't know about that.
02:08I hope they're ready for you and in good shape, too.
02:10Well, if they don't behave themselves, I know a cop.
02:14A very rich cop, because Jerry and Marlene Beck are our champions, and Jerry's a policeman here in Los Angeles.
02:21Marlene is a nurse who is just dying to get back to work in her nursing profession,
02:25but right now she has two little children that she's taking care of.
02:28One is about ten months, and one about almost four, right?
02:30Three.
02:31Three years, right.
02:32All right, our champions, as you know, have amassed a lot of money,
02:34but it may be time for someone to dethrone them,
02:37and you're the team that might be able to do it.
02:39Here's the way we're going to do it.
02:40We're going to find out our first game over here,
02:42where both teams will take part in this competition.
02:46So if you'll all follow me, I'll have the green team over here,
02:49the red team here, the green team on my left.
02:52Red team, lady on the carpet.
02:54Green team, lady on that little piece of carpeting.
02:57There you are.
02:58Now what is going to happen is that you are going to have a little relay race,
03:02and you're going to transport these saucers all the way down from here to your lady.
03:08The lady will take it and then transport it into the bucket at the finish line
03:11and deposit it in the bucket.
03:14Okay?
03:15Then she'll come back, and you'll do it again until someone has three saucers in the bucket.
03:19Is that quite clear so far?
03:20So far.
03:21You're waiting to hear how you're going to do it.
03:23You know that I'm not going to let you throw it or carry it.
03:26Because before you know it, here come our ladies.
03:30And Cindy has brought us out some nice little wooden pegs.
03:33There's a red one for you and a green one for you.
03:36Also a red one for Marlene and a green one for Linda.
03:39Please hold these at the very bottom like this.
03:42Okay?
03:42At the very bottom.
03:43Very good.
03:45Very good.
03:45You got it at the bottom?
03:46Now, with one hand behind your back, after you start,
03:50you can start by taking a saucer and putting it on the peg.
03:53You can start like that.
03:54And after that, it's one hand behind your back until you transport it to your lady.
03:58Keeping the one hand behind your back, you will transfer the saucer to her.
04:03And then she will take it and put it inside the bucket.
04:06When you come back, get your second one.
04:07Then you can use your hands again just to put it on here.
04:10And then after that, it's one-handed.
04:11Any questions?
04:12Are you ready?
04:13There's 60 seconds on the clock.
04:14There's a race to see if anyone can do the three before 60.
04:18I'll find out who's leading when time runs out.
04:20Ready, get set, go.
04:25No, no.
04:26You have to do it.
04:27You have to do it at the bottom.
04:28You must transfer it at the bottom.
04:30No, no.
04:30You must do it this way.
04:31Go back.
04:32Go back.
04:32You got it the right way.
04:33And transfer it at the bottom.
04:35That's it.
04:35You can't do it any other way.
04:38Be very careful.
04:39Now you've got it.
04:40That's the way to do it, Marlene.
04:41You've got it.
04:42All right.
04:42Now let's see if Linda can do the same thing.
04:44All right.
04:45All right.
04:45Go back in and run.
04:46Now Marlene has one.
04:47The Reds have one.
04:48They seem to be on to it.
04:49Our champions are hot.
04:50Our champions are hot.
04:51Here comes Marlene with a second one.
04:55And Linda's having some trouble.
04:59This looks like it may be the policeman and the nurse, the champions.
05:02Look like they're coming down.
05:04And that does stop the clock.
05:05Well, show us the chance.
05:08At least get one in, right?
05:10All right.
05:12Okay.
05:12Everybody back to home base.
05:14Let's go back to home base.
05:15Our champions are pretty tough.
05:17I don't think there's a stunt we can throw at them that they're not going to be qualified.
05:20Can I have the wooden peg back, please?
05:21Thank you very much.
05:22Okay.
05:22I'll just slide it right down there.
05:24I just think I knocked three models over.
05:26Okay.
05:27Marlene and Jerry, triumph again.
05:29Pick up another $500.
05:32They're just doing fantastically.
05:34Okay.
05:36Now, the two of you are going to work together.
05:39As a matter of fact, Jerry's going to do most of the work as you now compete for an additional $500 bonus as a team and against the clock.
05:46So would you come out here, please, and note that we have a table for Jerry to lie down on.
05:51And Jerry, I want you to lie down this table.
05:53It's nice.
05:54See, what we've done is put a nice big foam rubber for you here so you won't hurt your tummy.
05:58Lie down, face down, facing out towards camera number three so you can see what a good-looking guy you are.
06:03Okay?
06:04Okay.
06:05How do you feel, kid?
06:06I feel like I'm going to get an enema.
06:15Keep talking like that, and you will.
06:17Now, what we're going to do to get you another $500 is we're going to place a pillow between your feet as such.
06:30Close your feet together.
06:31Marlene is going to do that.
06:32When I say go, Marlene is going to put pillows between your feet, and you're going to fling it over and try and catch them.
06:37See, you just fling it over and try and catch it.
06:38If you can catch three in this amount of time, why, we'll give you $500.
06:43If you don't do it, we may give you that other thing.
06:45All right.
06:4650 seconds is what you have to do.
06:48You have 50 seconds, which is to throw the pillow and catch it.
06:51Starting from there, and, of course, you're on your own.
06:53Do I have to hold on to all three of them?
06:55You catch it, and I'll take it away from you.
06:57Okay?
06:57Ready?
06:58And go.
07:00Oh, you had a good idea going there.
07:04I'd put it between 50 and 50.
07:06See, that's it.
07:08That's the way to go.
07:09That way, you can fling it, by the way.
07:11All right.
07:11That's one.
07:12That's one.
07:13He's got one.
07:14He's got two.
07:16This kid is great.
07:17He's got two.
07:19And he's got three.
07:20Oh, fuck that.
07:25Oh, that's right.
07:26Oh, that's right.
07:29Wait till our testing team hears about you.
07:32They're going to get you after the show.
07:34That's very...
07:34You have...
07:35Of course, you have...
07:35Not only you've got good manual dexterity,
07:37but you're in great physical shape,
07:39and that helps a lot, too.
07:40So, Jerry and Marlene, come back to the seat
07:42and take a look at what it says over there.
07:44$500 now becomes $1,000.
07:47How do you like these kids?
07:49The champions are doing this great.
07:50But Lyndon Clint means may come back by all means.
07:55And let's see if they do right after these words.
08:05It's time to go all or nothing.
08:08Survey set.
08:09For Buzzer Casino.
08:11Let's see if you get lucky.
08:11It's a place where luck meets drama.
08:14Is it escargot?
08:15It is, too.
08:16And fortunes are made.
08:18Oh, you'll have a good time.
08:19We're laying odds that a different game show every week...
08:22Never have you been so lucky.
08:23We'll hit the jackpot.
08:25I'm a gambler at heart,
08:26especially when it's not my money to start with.
08:29Meet us on the Buzzer Casino floor weeknights at 10.
08:32Buzzer Casino.
08:33Feeling lucky?
08:34Oh, you bet.
08:35A member of our audience will receive the Norelco Toaster Oven.
08:40It toasts, it broils, and bakes a nine-inch pie.
08:42The new Norelco Toaster Oven.
08:46You know, Jack, I get a kick out of our contestants when they walk up to see the next stunt,
08:51and they take a look at all the props, and they say,
08:53I think I know what's coming.
08:55But they're not quite sure.
08:57Now, Marlene and Linda, this will be a little game between the two of you.
09:01A race against our clock.
09:03Of course, there's 60 seconds to perform this in.
09:05Or who is leading?
09:06You will know who's leading because this goes to a conclusion.
09:08You can forget about the clock.
09:09This one will go to a conclusion.
09:11And what happens is I'm going to ask you to transport the soft drink that's inside the cups.
09:15There's four ounces in each cup.
09:16You will transport the soft drink and put it inside the bottle.
09:19You will not touch it with your hands.
09:21You'll do it with your teeth.
09:21You'll pick up one cup at a time, come down, and pour it in the bottle.
09:24And how will I know when you've succeeded in putting in as much as I want you to put in?
09:28Well, it'll succeed when the straw that is now inside each bottle will come floating out.
09:34When it floats out and falls outside the bottle, then that person will be the winner.
09:38You can't take it out with your nose or your mouth or anything else.
09:40It has to come out because of the liquid that you put in here will force it up and out.
09:44You pour it with our mouth.
09:45You pour the cup, see, into the...
09:47Right.
09:48Off come the glasses.
09:50She's really serious.
09:51She's getting done some real work.
09:52You understand what happens?
09:54I would like you to start with the back cup and work forward.
09:58Okay.
09:59Ready, get set, use your teeth, and then pour.
10:02Go.
10:02Go, go, go, go, go, go, let it go.
10:08Come on, honey, let it go.
10:10That's it, good.
10:11That a girl.
10:14Way to go, Linda, way to go.
10:15That a girl.
10:16The green team has an edge between their teeth.
10:19Keep going, keep going, keep going.
10:20Keep going, keep going, keep going, keep going.
10:25Close enough to pass.
10:26And who gets it to float?
10:27Come on, man.
10:28Come on, man.
10:29All right, that's why we're moving all the unused cups.
10:31Keep going, Linda.
10:32Let it go.
10:33Ready?
10:34Keep going.
10:35Keep going.
10:36Keep going.
10:37Watch it.
10:38Watch it.
10:39It's very close to it.
10:40Very close to it.
10:41The next one will do it.
10:42Let's get it before she gets it.
10:43Let's see who gets it first.
10:44All right.
10:45All right.
10:46All right.
10:47The green team is flying by the side of the head.
10:50You can use the other hand to come.
10:52All right, Linda.
10:53All right.
10:54All right.
10:55Very well done.
10:56You can use your towels to towel off over there.
10:58You've got a lot of that soft drink on your face.
11:00Gentlemen, why don't you wipe the girls and take some of that extra soft drink?
11:04Now, that was a very good stunt.
11:06And as a matter of fact, it was so well done.
11:08Oh, well, forget it.
11:10Now, Linda and Clint have won their first game and their first $500.
11:15There you are.
11:20And now, a chance to pick up another $500.
11:23Follow me.
11:24Follow me.
11:25The two of you are now qualified to work as a team.
11:27And we're going to put you behind the fence here, Clint.
11:31I want you behind the fence.
11:32And I want you to hold our little barrel here that is empty at both ends.
11:36You see this tube?
11:37Empty at both ends.
11:38But it has a handle at each end.
11:41Up front?
11:42Whichever way makes you comfortable facing her.
11:44Now, I would suggest maybe you change hands a little bit.
11:46Do you feel comfortable this way facing her?
11:48Or do you want it this way?
11:49Whichever way you want to hold onto the handles.
11:50You like that?
11:51Because what we're going to do is get you up on that ladder now, dear.
11:54I want Linda up on the ladder.
11:56The other way.
11:57From the other side.
11:59That's right.
12:00Come on up here.
12:01And I'm going to ask you to dispatch these elliptical balloons towards Clint.
12:06You see?
12:07You just throw it over to Clint.
12:09The higher you go, I don't care how high you go.
12:11But you want to get a nice trajectory out of it, don't you?
12:13Then you throw it over here to Clint.
12:15You're going to catch these balloons in the tube.
12:18But you have to maintain two in the tube to win the $500.
12:24In this amount of time on the clock.
12:3050 seconds.
12:31You can do, as long as you don't go on the other side.
12:34Oh, block?
12:35No, you can't block.
12:36You can't block.
12:37No, it has to be on the side.
12:38Good thinking.
12:39However, I wouldn't let you do it.
12:41Now, are you ready?
12:42Catch two.
12:43You'll lean over as far as you want.
12:44But you can't go outside the coop.
12:46Okay, here we go.
12:47Start the clock.
12:4850 seconds.
12:49Linda, start the clock.
13:00Here it comes.
13:01Here it comes, Clint.
13:02Here it comes.
13:03All right, you got one.
13:04Oh, look at Clint.
13:05You went off the bottom.
13:06Okay.
13:07All right.
13:08Any time.
13:09Any time.
13:10Watch it as it floats down, Clint.
13:11Watch it as it floats down.
13:12Don't give up on it.
13:13Don't give up on it.
13:14Watch it float.
13:15Watch it float.
13:16And get in and hold it.
13:17You got one.
13:18You got one.
13:19You got one.
13:20Oh, don't lose it.
13:21Don't lose it now.
13:22You still got one.
13:23You still got one.
13:24You still got one in there.
13:25You still got 15 seconds.
13:26You still have 15 seconds.
13:27Take your time.
13:28Book Weiss-
13:39You know, Clint, you almost when the second one entered in the tube, youquit and it was a good
13:45thing the two were in at the same time, you almost threw the one out, the other one
13:48out.
13:49And at the same time, the two balloons saw each other, said,
13:51Hello, how are you? And that was good enough for me.
13:53And you pick up 500 bucks more, which is good enough for you.
13:56Now, each team, the red and the green, have 1,000 bucks.
13:58We'll come back with a big shuffle game right after these words.
14:12Weekdays are great days for great action.
14:15We're going to have a great contest.
14:17Great excitement.
14:18Isn't that great?
14:18Great fun.
14:19All-time great.
14:21Great match-ups.
14:21Great.
14:22Great.
14:22Great.
14:23It's a great way to spend the day.
14:25Great.
14:25Greater.
14:26Greater's a very nice and big.
14:27Daytime buzz.
14:28It's great.
14:30Weekdays starting at 10, only on Buzzer.
14:34This is a very interesting game that we have here.
14:35This determines who our champions will be.
14:38And you've played it a few times.
14:39This will be the first time that Linda and Clint have played it.
14:41So let me go over the rules once again so that you'll all know how to play the game.
14:45This is our bonus shuffleboard over here.
14:47And you'll see that it's marked off in divisions that range from 300, at the least, all the way up to 1,000.
14:57Now, the team whose disc is leading, touching the highest amount of money and leading at the end of all the discs,
15:03will be the winner and get that amount of money.
15:04But then go on to play the bonus game for 10 times that amount.
15:08So if you hit 700, for example, and win, you'll be playing a bonus game for 7,000.
15:13Even if you win with 300, you'll be playing a bonus game for 3,000.
15:16So there's a lot at stake here.
15:17Let me warn you.
15:18Don't throw your shuffle all the way.
15:21If your disc goes too far and goes off the edge, it's out of action.
15:24Same thing if it goes off the side.
15:26And same thing if it doesn't reach the first money amount of 300.
15:28It has to at least get up to 300.
15:30There's a possibility, though, that a disc could fall in between too many amounts and not touch either one.
15:35But I'll let you know what's happening all through the game.
15:38Because our teams are tied at 1,000 apiece today, nobody has an advantage.
15:42Two for the green, two discs for the red.
15:45In a case of a tie, the champions have last disc.
15:47So greens will start.
15:48Ladies go first.
15:49Linda, here you go.
15:51Take your time.
15:52Warm up.
15:53And send the first one down.
15:58Not a bad one.
16:00A little light.
16:01But touching $500.
16:04All right.
16:07$500 is what you have to beat, Marlene.
16:09There's not too much on either side.
16:11You may have to go right at it.
16:12Let's see what she does.
16:13Marlene goes right at it.
16:15But she pushes the green up ahead.
16:19Green is now in the lead with $700.
16:21And here comes Green's second shot.
16:23Will he play strategy?
16:24Will he try and get a higher amount?
16:26Will he try and block his $700?
16:27Let's see what Clint does.
16:29All right.
16:30Here he is.
16:30He's leading at $700.
16:32He's going to try and put one right in front of it to protect it.
16:34He hit it too hard.
16:35And what did he do?
16:36He knocked him off.
16:36He knocked both of them off.
16:38He knocked both his discs off.
16:40Instead of laying down a very easy block, what happened?
16:43Clint threw his disc down and knocked off his leading disc,
16:47which means that, Jerry, you have the last disc.
16:50You can stop right now and throw the disc over to the next network
16:54and still have $500 to win the game.
16:56You can try to get a higher amount and to go for a bigger bonus.
17:01So, Jerry, what are you going to do?
17:05What are you going to do, Jerry?
17:06Oh, I can't let the boys at the station down.
17:10You know, I've got to go for it.
17:11He's going to try and get a higher amount.
17:13He already has $500.
17:15If he knocks himself out of the game, he'll be sorry,
17:17but he's going for a higher amount.
17:18What happens?
17:20It looks safe.
17:20It looks safe.
17:21It looks good.
17:22It is just too far.
17:23But nevertheless, the Red team wins with $500
17:26and we'll be playing a bonus game for $5,000
17:29right after these messages.
17:41We're back in our Champions.
17:43The Vex have learned to like to play our bonus stunt
17:44for $5,000 more.
17:47I tell you, they could have themselves quite a bit of dough
17:49if they could get this one.
17:50So we're going to go right into the bonus now.
17:51This is going to be an easy one for you, Marlene,
17:53and a kind of a difficult one for Jerry.
17:55Wouldn't it be nice if I said,
17:56here, a bowl of mints, all I want you to do is eat them up?
17:59Wouldn't that be a nice thing to do right now?
18:00Yeah.
18:01But that's not the way it works.
18:02I take one mint, just one little mint.
18:04I ask you to place your head back.
18:06And then I place a mint right here on your forehead.
18:09Mmm, I see great things in your future.
18:12I place the mint right over here.
18:14And then you, by not using your hands,
18:16but just by wiggling and tossing your head around,
18:18whatever you can, try and grab it in your mouth.
18:20And if you can get the mint in your mouth,
18:21you just work it down your face and into the mouth,
18:24and you've got yourself $5,000,
18:26provided you can do that in this amount of time.
18:3245 seconds.
18:33It's done.
18:34I saw our producer do it earlier today.
18:37As a matter of fact, he enjoyed it so much,
18:39I let him do it 20 more times.
18:40He likes mints.
18:41Are you ready?
18:42No problem.
18:43No hands, no problem.
18:44And away you go.
18:49Work it down, work it down.
18:50That's it, that's it.
18:52Toss it a little bit.
18:53Toss it.
18:54Shake your head a little bit.
18:55That's it, that's it, that's it.
18:57It's coming, it's coming.
18:59Oh, oh.
18:59Now back, back down.
19:00That's where you put another one on his head.
19:02Okay, get him a nice fight.
19:04That's it.
19:05Okay.
19:05Get another one ready.
19:06Get another one ready.
19:08Just keep them coming.
19:09One at a time.
19:11Okay, get another one ready, Marlene.
19:14He's got it.
19:14He says, oh, he almost had it.
19:16Get another one ready.
19:18Look at this, look at this, look at this.
19:19Look at this, look at this.
19:21Yay!
19:21Yay!
19:21Yay!
19:22Yay!
19:32This guy is too much.
19:37Oh, yeah, you can have the bowl and the mints and everything.
19:41You've got to tell me honestly, when you started, did you think there's any way in the world you're going to do it?
19:46I don't know.
19:47All I was looking for cobwebs up there.
19:51That's what I had in my brain.
19:52I don't know.
19:53You didn't have it in your brain.
19:54You are so good at these things, and you've just been rewarded with another $5,000, Jerry.
19:59And we'll count up your winnings after we watch some sponsors have a word about the presents.
