00:00Welcome back to Hidden Valley Raceway, Darwin. We're at the top end. It is beautiful up here at the moment.
00:08There's a pretty strong easterly blowing of around about 30 to 35 kilometres an hour.
00:12Cars and crews are on the grid together with VIPs and special guests as the 25 cars and drivers prepare for this first fascinating super sprint race of the day.
00:22100 kilometres, 35 laps. There's a lot to talk about. Let's get downstairs with Rihanna.
00:26But, Michael Caruso, I know that if things had have gone the way you wanted, you could have been a soccer player.
00:32But you're celebrating the World Cup this week with a special livery on your helmet.
00:38How much sleep have you got watching the World Cup this week?
00:40It's been a bit difficult, to be honest. But, look, I've enjoyed it.
00:44Obviously, it only comes around once every four years.
00:46And to have the helmet, it's pretty cool to have.
00:49And, yeah, hopefully it brings a bit of luck and we can get some great results with it.
00:53Just quickly work through the design here.
00:55It's a bit of Italian slash Australia.
00:57It is, yeah. I've got a bit of everything in there and just, like, a nice ball on the top that they're running at the World Cup.
01:02It has the Brazilian flag and stuff on the back.
01:05And, yeah, it's good.
01:07Obviously, it has the sponsors on there, too.
01:08So, you've got to look after them as well.
01:10So, no, look, yeah, love the helmet.
01:12And Frank from Arsta did a great job.
01:14Well, we hope it brings you plenty of luck this weekend at Darwin.
01:16Good luck for the race.
01:17Thank you very much.
01:19Well, Craig, thanks for that.
01:21We all need to... Oh, thanks. That's so cool and refreshing.
01:24Lounsey, so much to talk about with you this weekend.
01:26I mean, championship going beautifully.
01:28Second ride of the grid.
01:28But most importantly, mate, happy 40th birthday.
01:31Yeah, thanks, Burris.
01:33Look, my birthday always seems to fall on the dull weekend.
01:36But it is nice.
01:37We've had our qualifiers done now.
01:39We start third and a second in the second race.
01:41So, it's great for us, yeah.
01:43We love coming up here in Northern Territory.
01:45And, of course, we put on great weather.
01:46So, it's pretty hard not to come back.
01:48A little celebration for the birthday last night.
01:51No, it actually sort of was pretty calm.
01:53And I think tonight will be the same.
01:54I think Sunday night, if we could have a victory, it would be really nice.
01:57But, you know, it's really sort of business as usual now this weekend.
02:00And trying to get some good points back on Frosty, who's behind us, which is a good thing.
02:04But, of course, having, you know, two sort of smaller races today and then one big race tomorrow, it's all important to get those points.
02:11And we'd love to see the 4-0 on the race.
02:13It's just behind the straps at the moment.
02:15But nothing better or no better way to celebrate than being on the podium, Louncy.
02:18So, we wish you all the best.
02:19Happy birthday, mate.
02:21Thanks, Burris.
02:21It's just our Levi and Chile.
02:23But, yeah, look, we've got to do our best today.
02:24That's for sure.
02:25Good luck, mate.
02:28Just going to grab a chat here with Fabian Coulthard, having a chat himself with Phil Keaty's engineer.
02:33Really interested to know, Fabian, Phil, what are you guys talking about at this particular stage?
02:37And tell us the truth.
02:39How much pain are we going to be in at the end of this, you know, however many lap race we've got to do?
02:43So, we've just got to try and manage the tyre the best we can.
02:46You know, we're going to have to race hard, but, you know, probably have to drive to a time to make sure the tyres last, you know, the duration of this race.
02:52So, high ambient, hot temperatures, it's going to be pretty tough.
02:56Well, let me give you an idea.
02:58I don't know if you can just see on the heat gun here.
03:00We'll put it on the tyre.
03:01So, yeah, that's around, averaging around 45, 46 degrees centigrade.
03:06So, I reckon we will get to 50 for the race.
03:08I've seen 50 up here.
03:09That is hot.
03:10Hard for this guy.
03:11He's got his thinking cap up.
03:12Good luck.
03:14Well, Chas Mostert just getting himself ready to go.
03:16Chas, two race wins now.
03:17Won at Queensland last year.
03:18You come off the race win at Perth.
03:20That's got to start to give you a lot of confidence for events like this.
03:23Yeah, it certainly does.
03:24Yeah, we're a bit far back today, but I think we've got good race pace.
03:27So, looking forward to getting out there and seeing what we can do.
03:30It's a long race.
03:31Got to look after your tyres.
03:32And, yeah, the FPR Falcons have been looking after this tyre pretty good.
03:35So, we'll get this Pepsi Max car up the front, hopefully.
03:37Good stuff.
03:38Hey, you're back in 13.
03:38It's a bit of a challenge ahead of you.
03:39Can you get past a few?
03:41Yeah, I think, you know, like I said, we've got good tyre life.
03:43It's obviously the race for tyre life.
03:45So, we'll see how we go and we'll put our best foot forward.
03:49Go get them, Chas.
03:49Thanks.
03:50Ryan Madison, CEO of Erebus Motorsport.
03:53Big news for the team this week.
03:55New branding on the car.
03:56AMG Customer Sports.
03:58It's a sign of positive news for you guys.
04:01The conversations you're having with AMG.
04:03Just explain to us exactly what this means.
04:06Well, for three years, we've been able to run the AMG Customer Sports Ligo in our GT program.
04:10Since the inception of the VA Supercar program, we've not been able to.
04:15There's been a lot of speculation and question mark over our relationship and certainly what we're looking at going forward into 15 and 16 and so on.
04:22For us to be able to start the communications with this level of positivity around the discussions, be able to run the Customer Sports logo, great for our team.
04:29So, looking forward to next year and beyond, we're hoping that AMG comes on board, stays on board in V8 Supercars.
04:34That's exactly right, yeah.
04:36Thanks so much, Ryan.
04:36Thanks a lot.
04:37So, Jason Bright, nice qualifying, mate, but just tell us how you're going to manage this race in terms of you've got to drive the car as fast as you can, obviously, but everyone's talking about heat and tyre management.
04:46How do you strike that balance?
04:47Well, I mean, you've just got to do what you can early on there and not sort of squeeze it too much as long as you're sort of not losing positions early on.
04:54If you can sort of look after the tyres for that period, then it'll pay off later on.
04:59But, you know, at the same time, if someone's sort of pushing you from behind, you can't afford to lose that spot because they are hard to get back.
05:05All right, mate, best of luck.
05:07Seems like you've got a plan.
05:08Cheers, mate.
05:09Jamie Winkup, the holiday in Bali seems to have done you good.
05:12You've broken the hoodoo that you've had here at Darwin and got yourself a pole position.
05:16Yeah, thanks, Rihanna.
05:17Never been on pole here for all the time.
05:19Triple eight have never been on pole.
05:21So, it was nice to get one and then to get two as a bonus.
05:23But it's all about now.
05:25It's all about trying to make these tyres last in 35 laps.
05:28That's exactly right.
05:29Lots of talk about tyre degradation.
05:31Lots of talk about how hot it's going to be in these races.
05:33What's it going to take to get this job done?
05:35Yeah, offers to be 55 today, especially towards the last 10 laps.
05:40So, that's okay.
05:41I've trained hard.
05:41I had a nice holiday.
05:43Brain's refreshed.
05:44So, it all comes down in the next 45 minutes.
05:46Thanks, Jamie.
05:46Good luck.
05:48Scotty McLaughlin from here on the front row of the grid.
05:50You can almost reach out and touch Jamie Winkup.
05:52Tap on his window.
05:53How much or how do you beat this guy off the line in your Volvo?
05:57Oh, I mean, it's tough.
05:59He's bloody good at starts.
06:01But, you know, yeah, I don't know.
06:02Just try and get to the first corner first.
06:04I mean, the car's quite hard to get off the line compared to my Holden last year.
06:08But, you know, I'm loving the Volvo and hopefully I can get it off faster.
06:11I had a bit of a practice at that.
06:13At the test we had a couple of weeks ago, so it should be all right.
06:15I know how much you love to race, but the chance to take Jamie on right off the line
06:19here with nothing in front of you is a pretty good opportunity.
06:21Oh, we love having our battles.
06:22So, everyone loves them.
06:23So, I hope they'll come up on top again.
06:25Go get them, Scotty.
06:26Enjoy.
06:27Cheers.
06:30Scott McLaughlin on the grid there with Jamie Winkup front row of the grid.
06:34In fact, Scotty's got a little brake problem they've been trying to weed out this weekend.
06:37That's a drama for him.
06:38But we go racing this weekend in Darwin.
06:41Mark Scaife, give us all the details.
06:43This is 2.87 kilometres.
06:44It's a great racetrack crop power.
06:46It's got some rise and fall.
06:47It's very, very low grip.
06:49It's very fast.
06:50Big, long, straight.
06:512.65 kilometres an hour.
06:53And about half the lap is at full throttle.
06:55It's a place that you've got to work very hard, given the grip level,
06:59to make the car come onto the straight and flow the car nicely.
07:02It's actually much more.
07:04And paper looks reasonably simple, but it's not simple at all.
07:07David Reynolds, one of ten cars that are carrying on board camera systems for us.
07:12There's Rick Kelly.
07:12Brake rating is very high around here.
07:16High stress with peak temperatures 950 degrees at the bottom of the straight.
07:21Medium rating in terms of the bumps around here.
07:24High rating in terms of tyre wear.
07:26We're going to talk a lot about tyres, tyre strategy, and the way in which the boys go about the task.
07:30So, on board, Tim Slade, great performance in New Zealand.
07:36Tremendous performance from him there.
07:38And the drama with the clutch that foiled what should have been a great result.
07:41He'll be hungry to rectify that.
07:42So, with on board cameras, we've got Wincup, Widerbottom, Davison, Coulthard, Kelly, Pye, Courtney, McLaughlin, Slade, and Reynolds.
07:50We've got it covered from every angle.
07:52It's 100 kilometres, 35 laps.
07:54There's the front row of the grid.
07:55Red Bull Racing Australia Holden, Jamie Wincup, reigning champion, and the new pretender to the crown.
08:02He's had a great job so far this year, Scotty McLaughlin.
08:04Let's take a look at the Fuso starting grid for race 17 at Hidden Valley.
08:12Jamie Wincup, as he said, the first time he's been off pole here, but also the first time the 888 have been off pole.
08:17It'll be an intriguing battle with McLaughlin.
08:19Craig Lowndes, Shane Van Gisbergen.
08:21Van Gisbergen was fast yesterday.
08:22Great job, Garth Tander, in P5, alongside the series leader, Mark Winnemontem.
08:28Lee Holdsworth, the first of the Erebus Mercedes-Benz cars.
08:31He did a great job in terms of his speed, the way that that car looks.
08:35Very, very encouraging for this weekend.
08:38Dave Reynolds, very fast here last year.
08:39He'd be disappointed with 11th.
08:41James Moffat makes it five manufacturers in the top 12.
08:45Chas Most at 13th.
08:47Michael Caruso alongside him.
08:49Will Davison, partner to Lee Holdsworth.
08:51Not good enough in terms of one lap and need to improve that car based on the tyre condition
08:57and the way that car flows through this race.
08:59Todd Kelly further back than he would have liked.
09:01David Wall in P20.
09:04Dale Wood, Russell Engel.
09:05We spoke to Russell Engel earlier.
09:07And he's always a very, very good hard racer.
09:11Look for him to come forward.
09:12Robert Dahlgren, Nick Perkatt.
09:15And at the back of the field, Jack Perkett's disappointed with his run in 25th.
09:19That's our Fusso starting grip.
09:25There's Jamie Wincup.
09:27Pole position number 57 in his career to equal the late, great Peter Brock.
09:32What a remarkable milestone for him.
09:33And he came into the weekend with no pole positions at this venue.
09:37So far, he's got two to his credit.
09:38That's a great performance.
09:39It's his nearest rival in terms of brand and great battle going on in the championship at the moment.
09:46Because this man's got the ascendance.
09:47He's got a 101-point margin, Mark Winterbottom.
09:50And he's got terrific form on the board at this racetrack.
09:52A win here last year.
09:54Nine of the last 12 races have resulted in a podium for Mark Winterbottom.
09:58James Court, he's been quick in practice.
10:00He'll be quick in qualifying.
10:01He'll be a force as well.
10:02So you can see the boys behind me as they're coming down onto the grid, weaving tyres.
10:06Now, important, you want to try and stay on the racing line, not pick up too much rubbish onto your tyres.
10:11Now, this is a hard one, this start, because down this way from the start line, 600 metres.
10:15That's as long as anywhere we go.
10:17So it's a straight in itself.
10:18They're going to be doing 230 kilometres an hour down there with cars in front, behind, beside.
10:24And as a driver, when you sit in there, you've got to have what we call really good situational awareness as they grid up.
10:29You've got to know what's going on behind, front, side.
10:31To position your car, you need to try and get to the inside before you get down there.
10:35This is a big call and a very important part of the race.
10:39Mark Larkham on the pit wall there.
10:42As Tim Slade comes into his start box.
10:45It's always a very even start here, Crompe, because the grip, in terms of grip, right side to left side, very, very similar.
10:51So it's not really, in terms of advantage, either P1 or P2.
10:55Being on the inside, where Jamie Winkup is, is still the important factor when you get down to the left-hander at turn one.
11:02Green flag.
11:03Green flag.
11:04Green flag.
11:05In gear.
11:07In the starter's hands.
11:10Remember, McLaughlin's got a little niggling break drama.
11:14The heat is on again in Darwin, and Winkup makes up the line.
11:18Lowndes goes with him.
11:19The birthday boil grabs second spot straight away.
11:22McLaughlin didn't get away well, and Van Gisbergen is nicely positioned up the inside to grab third.
11:29McLaughlin's jump, his jump was great, wasn't it?
11:32But then it just didn't go along with it, Neil.
11:35Scotty's on the outside.
11:36He's on the dirty line.
11:37He might hang on here.
11:38He's going to go side by side with Van Gisbergen through the asses.
11:41Gives him the ideal inside line for the right-hander.
11:48Van Gisbergen stays with it on the outside, but runs out of road.
11:52Now he, in turn, has the insider for the hairpin six in the valley.
11:56Van Gisbergen finally, in that arm wrestle, grabs third.
11:59That is great driving, those two guys.
12:01Through the turn three, four, and braking area, and the way they got in there, they were alongside each other.
12:07They didn't make contact.
12:08Very high-level driving.
12:12Reynolds just outside the top ten, trying to find his way around there as well.
12:15New curbing down here at turns nine and ten.
12:18It's changed the way the drivers attack that corner a little.
12:22Several different surfaces there, and we've talked in years previous about the joins in the track surface
12:28that upset the front of the car under brakes in a couple of spots.
12:32At the northern end of the circuit, northwestern end of the circuit,
12:35this is Tim Slade.
12:38Great shot down the left side of the car.
12:41They've got a headwind today.
12:42They won't be hitting that peak speed value, but it's still mighty quick.
12:46Up the inside, car 17, and that is David Wall.
12:50Wilson Security Racing.
12:52That's an amazing shot.
13:03215 kilometres an hour as they top that little rise in the braking area into five.
13:09It's always unbalanced.
13:10That's why when McLaughlin and Van Gisbergen were together on the previous, or the opening lap,
13:17to get through there together, it's pretty much a one-lane racetrack.
13:21Two cars got through, all sideways, cold tyres, and, as I said, high-level driving for there not to be contact.
13:28Looking back now, it's got McLaughlin's car back to Garth Tander.
13:31Tander looks like he's got good early pace.
13:33He was almost down the inside of McLaughlin at turn one on the previous lap.
13:39So, Winnerbottom in behind Tander.
13:42Then Lee Holdsworth just in behind there, followed by Bright, Courtney, and Moffat.
13:47That's your ten.
13:48So, there Gisbergen has made ground.
13:50It was an immediate jump, a great jump by McLaughlin, but it didn't go on with it.
13:55Basically, in the second stage of the start, Winnerbottom and the rest,
13:59there was three or four really good starts, but Wincom's initial jump and drive away from the line was far better.
14:06That's a fair run into the side.
14:08That's Rick Kelly.
14:09It's a bit of ongoing Morse code there, and Rick getting stuck right into the side of Slade,
14:14and side-by-side here into the right-hander is always awkward.
14:19Slade's going to escort him wide, which he has.
14:22So, that's the opposite to what we saw there with McLaughlin and Van Gisbergen,
14:25because McLaughlin gave Van Gisbergen room there, very easy to push them off that exit curve at Turn 5.
14:33Interesting little bit of road this.
14:35It's one of the slowest corners in Australia, very, very low grip,
14:38and then this sort of weird run through the right hand, 155km there,
14:42and then up over the top of the hill to almost 200km an hour
14:46before you attack this double left.
14:50You can see Dahlgren, Wood, and Perkins battling.
14:53This is the jump.
14:54Have a look.
14:54That initial jump there for McLaughlin was very, very good,
14:57but then the second stage at the start,
14:59Winkup got away, so did Lowndes, so did Van Gisbergen,
15:02and so did Winterbottom in behind.
15:05Here it is a good-looking rearward from Jamie's car.
15:07So he made a perfect start.
15:09He already had 10km an hour on Scott at this point,
15:12and you can see that McLaughlin was vulnerable to Van Gisbergen down the inside,
15:17but it took until Turn 5 before, in fact,
15:21Van Gisbergen was able to actually claim that back.
15:24And this is the piece that we said.
15:26This is on board now with Mark Winterbottom.
15:28Check this out.
15:29That's Tander in the weeds, but up in front through 3 and 4.
15:33They're alongside each other, over the kerbs, sliding,
15:35didn't run into each other, still up ahead.
15:38You can see that McLaughlin allowed him through.
15:41Now, this is the replay outside of Rick Kelly and Slade's cars.
15:46We're on the side of Slade when he got a bit of a bump.
15:50This is the replay.
15:51Check this out.
15:54Bang.
15:55There's a little missing altitude.
16:00That second part was pretty costly then for Tim.
16:02Had to get out of the throttle.
16:03Category Technical Manager Frank Adamson in conversation there with Adrian Burgess
16:08at the Holton Racing Team.
16:09That's Rob Starr's head that we can see in the bottom right-hand side of screen.
16:13Leader at the moment is Wincup.
16:15He's with 0.8 of a second on his teammate who's got 1.2 seconds on Shane Van Gisbergen.
16:20Garth Tander.
16:21More races at this racetrack than any other.
16:23There are three drivers in the field that have done all 16 previous events.
16:27Tander, Clowns and Engel.
16:31But only Garth has done all 44 races.
16:34The others have had a couple of no-shows with engine dramas.
16:37So, great record for Tander.
16:38And it's included three wins on the journey as well.
16:41He likes the racetrack.
16:42They all do.
16:43It's a fun racetrack.
16:44Lots of challenges in it.
16:45When you've got a track with a 265k top speed on the straight and a first gear left-handed
16:51that gets you down to 60 or below in the valley in the middle of the place, it gives you an
16:55idea of the range on this racetrack.
16:57Surface changes are hard to manage.
16:58There's one right on the gear chase.
17:01Here's another one.
17:02Little grooves in the road that just dip the front of the car.
17:04There's another one coming up very shortly approaching the final corner.
17:07Here it is.
17:07Watch.
17:09Bang.
17:09Right there.
17:10And it's right where you want to get brake pressure on.
17:12And it's at the same time where you want to start to roll steering lock onto the car
17:16and weights the inside front wheel.
17:18So, there's a real tendency to lock a brake there as well unless you treat the brake pedal
17:23carefully.
17:25Here's Scotty.
17:25Pie car 16.
17:26He's got a good battle going with Will Davison at the moment.
17:30Did you see that?
17:31It's an interesting speed comparison there when we're on board with Winterbottom because for
17:36the guy who's leading the championship, he hasn't qualified that well in terms of he hasn't
17:40had a pole position in 2014.
17:42So, you think normally that would be converse in terms of being at the front of the field
17:47and making sure that you've got the best result.
17:49But the thing about Winterbottom is that he has had great race pace.
17:53And now, you can see him now forging his way up onto the back of Tanda.
17:56They've probably been the benchmark car in terms of race pace across the year.
18:01So, looking here at Scotty Pie in 15th, Dick Johnson Racing, Wilson Security, one of the
18:05teams that didn't test in the brake between Perth and Darwin.
18:08In fact, a quick shout-out to Steve Amos from their engine department.
18:12Great guy, well-known up and down pit lane.
18:14He's been unwell.
18:15Everybody at Dick Johnson Racing and in the entire V8 Supercar Community.
18:19Wishing you well, Steve.
18:20I want to see you back here very soon.
18:21So, Pie's been busy on the mountain bike.
18:27Didn't get behind the wheel of the Falcon, but he's been doing lots of training.
18:30We're looking from his rear bumper at the moment.
18:32Coming on to the front straight.
18:34Great work.
18:34Will Doverson having a bit of a battle, getting that AMG Benz onto the straight cleanly there.
18:40Fastest lap of the race.
18:41A new one's just been set by Jamie Winkum.
18:43A 1.11.6.
18:44He's got a one-second margin over Lowndes.
18:46They're in a bit of a holding pattern, but Slade does get successfully down the inside
18:52and moves up a spot.
18:52We'll take a break.
18:53We'll be back in a moment.
18:54We're in Darwin at the top end.
19:03Sky City Triple Crown.
19:04Race number 17 of the championship.
19:06Super Sprint Saturday.
19:07V8 Supercars on set in the Mega Wall.
19:09There's Ryan Madison from Erebus Motorsport in the middle at the top of your shot.
19:14And we've got it covered in all departments.
19:16Race Control, Curve Cams, on board with the drivers.
19:19This is Rick Kelly.
19:19We're looking over his shoulder.
19:21Fifth gear approach into that right-hander in the middle at Turn 5 here.
19:25It's down to 95 kilometres an hour in second gear through this corner,
19:30and then it's up into the valley.
19:31And Rick, at the moment, is in 18th place.
19:34That's Will Davison just in front.
19:35Right behind him at the moment is David Wall.
19:38Position number 19.
19:42Peak acceleration.
19:43First, second, third through the right-hander.
19:45Then it's very delicate use of the throttle before you grab fourth.
19:48Pretty much at the scene in the road.
19:50We're only in it very briefly.
19:52You can see how hard the right rear tyre in particular works around here.
19:56Constantly turning left, left, left.
19:59And it's right here where you need to really support the car.
20:03The car came on nice and cleanly then.
20:05There was no evidence of oversteer.
20:07That was Rick looking down at where his rear adi roll bars are positioned.
20:11All that data is available on the MoTeC readout on the steering wheel of the car.
20:21And with the headwind, you can brake a little bit deeper down there than you'd like.
20:24Bit of understeering evidence there with Will Davison's car through turn one.
20:30The changing wing conditions here is something you've really got to track at this location.
20:35So the leader at the moment with just over one second is Jamie Winkup.
20:39They're on lap 10 of 35.
20:42Craig Lowndes, his teammate Red Bull Racing Australia second.
20:45Then VIP Pet Food Shane Van Gisbergen is third.
20:49Robert Delver in car number 34 is down in 23rd.
20:52But his teammate Scotty McLaughlin is fourth at the moment.
20:54As always, there's huge battles going on up and down this field.
21:01These blokes, including Dale Wood and Jack Perkins, there they are at the tail of the field.
21:0719-odd seconds off the lead.
21:08It just goes to show that track position is so vital in determining your start order.
21:15You give away so much time early in the race when you start down the order
21:18and it's very hard to recover it, even if you've got a quick car.
21:21And you just end up in the battle, don't you?
21:23So you're actually dicing with each other,
21:25which even if you're at the front of the field slows you down.
21:27But that tends to just drag the field out.
21:31And as you can see, there's battles going on everywhere.
21:34Quick story, funny one in relation to the van at the right-hand side of the screen there.
21:37Car 36, Michael Caruso.
21:39We know he's a character.
21:40Does a lot of work for us on V8 Extra on 7.
21:43Has breakfast here this morning.
21:44You know you're in the top end when all of a sudden
21:46he lets out an almighty blood-curdling shriek and jumps to his feet.
21:50A little green frog was on his shoulder.
21:52But he thought it was another reptile.
21:54So the team all day have been absolutely hammering Michael Caruso.
21:58Every time they walk past him, they go, look out, mate.
22:00So they're into him.
22:01He's not thinking about that at the moment,
22:03but I did get a giggle out of the story.
22:08Attack of the killer frog.
22:13He's battling at the moment with his teammate, James Moffat.
22:16They're 11th and 12th.
22:17Right behind them is Dave Reynolds, who was so competitive here last year.
22:22Take it back a year.
22:23Remember, there's that drama with Mark Winterbottom and David Reynolds
22:26throughout the course of the race.
22:29Would you like to go for a ride, Scofie?
22:30Yes.
22:31Just under three kilometres, 14 turns.
22:33Davey Reynolds, two pole positions here last year.
22:35Let's set back for us.
22:37Crank up the aircon and have a look at this.
22:38Crank up the aircon and have a look at this.
23:08Crank up the aircon and have a look at this.
23:24and isn't it a great racetrack combo it's just it's got a little bit of everything and you can
23:47see there that dave reynolds car is a little bit better than caruso's in a couple of spots
23:52this breaking area is the one i keep making reference to it's so difficult to get this right
23:56it's pretty wild with dahlgren perk out running into each other in a straight line then wood
24:01sneaks in between those two cars i always say there's no real need there's jimmy richards one
24:07of the all-time greats he's actually driving the touring car masters this weekend and he's always
24:14very interested as to what's going on his son steve who won bathurst last year with mark
24:21winter bottom has moved across to drive with craig lounge their recent test steve did a great job he
24:26was only a couple of tenths slower than craig at willow bank so they look like they're going to
24:31be a very strong combination come october
24:33this battle here we've got lee holdsworth who's doing a nice job in position seven bright in
24:41eighth in car eight then it's james courtney and fabian kultard
24:44fabian's qualified better for the next event
24:48rob star on the radio to james courtney
24:55took the northern territory chief minister for a run yesterday and a drama here
25:00will davison in the pit lane smoke emanating from the car we'll find out why as quickly as we can
25:06leave straight in the garage
25:08doesn't look good
25:12he was having a bit of a battle it looked like in car balance early in the race in those shots that
25:18we saw a lot of push a lot of understeer in the car back to this little battle just at the tail end
25:24of the top ten he looks like he's holding us up but holdsworth at the moment rob star was saying
25:29to james courtney holdsworth's holding up just be patient mate
25:34there's a big train of cars forming there at the moment
25:37fancy footwork from james courtney on the right hand side of screen
25:43that little tap with the left foot's just to make sure that he's got brake pedal pressure and just to
25:50pressure it up just to push the pistons in the brake calipers up and give him a nice firm pedal when he
25:56does grab it they can rattle back in the caliper over the curbs
26:00funny how cars have got their own strengths and weaknesses you look here at lee there are different
26:05spots where he actually gets away despite being under pressure in other areas of the racetrack
26:11it's being pursued by jason bright at the moment one of the most experienced drivers here who's got
26:15a lap record a qualifying record and a practice record he's won here on a couple of occasions he's
26:21done 41 races coming into this event putting the blowtorch on lee holdsworth there
26:26at the moment it's encouraging to see arab is doing so well this has been an emerging trend in
26:31the recent race meetings when you look through the thread all bright big lock up that was nasty
26:37only just got it stopped probably put a mark on that dunlop tire then i'd suggest
26:47exiting the slowest corner over there about 65 kilometers an hour and then battling for drive
26:53traction meanwhile at the front wing cup has a 1.8 second lead over lounge van gisberg and
26:59mclaughlin tander with winterbottom holdsworth bright courtney and fabian caulfard and that
27:05little shot off turn 10 there a moment ago looking at lee holdsworth turn 11 i should say you can just
27:10see him catching the car in the slide as he came off the corner so he's doing everything in his power at
27:15the moment not to load that right rear tire try and keep that steering as neutralized as possible
27:21as gentle on the throttle they're all very very conscious with 20 laps remaining of just how much
27:27work they've got to do to make tires live around here rihanna will davidson it looked like it was a
27:31pretty tough race out there for you and obviously disappointing way to uh to start the day yeah it's
27:36that's pretty ordinary yeah very disappointing so i actually got no idea what happened it's obviously
27:40uh all of a sudden big clume of smoke in the mirror uh there's no noise no bang so i assume it's some
27:46form of oil line or something that's come off so uh yeah i just brought it straight in we were having
27:51a tough run actually um they're really struggling with the balance out there so you could say it put
27:55me out of my misery but uh you know we always need points there's another race this afternoon that's
27:59the only positive that you've got to come out of this situation always positives yeah we actually did
28:03two extreme things with both cars to try and get a direction for the sabo and tomorrow so
28:07we are trying lots of things it wasn't pretty then i was being smart and patient waiting for
28:12the end to hope uh we'd come home strong but uh i was hurting out there a little bit there's no
28:16gripples like i was driving in the wet so um anyway that's very unfortunate though good luck for the
28:20second one thanks cheers bill davis and erebus motorsport that confirms what we thought that the
28:25balance of the car wasn't up to snuff came into this weekend 12th in the championship he's qualified
28:30fourth and had a fourth in the tasmanian round but at the moment we've got a bit of pressure on here
28:34between lowndes and van gisberger we'll sneak off to a very quick break come back and see what the
28:39outcome of this little battle is very shortly
28:46back in darwin great crowd enjoying all the action it's a 3.4 second margin for win cup is he
28:52chasing win number four can he nail it hey we're staying in the sun in two weeks time the castrol
28:57townsville 500 driven by tafe queensland there's an extra 100 k's of v8 supercar racing two 125s on
29:05the sunday 250 on the sunday there's a scary thought are those teeth clean uh there's extra viewing
29:11mounds grandstands vanessa amorossi jessica malboy are going to perform for us up at townsville we love
29:17being at that event and love escaping the south at this time of the year scape in the word also that i was
29:22given earlier in the day is sirame wine's got a ladies lounge there so you can escape during the
29:26day for for a little sip and relaxation so i reckon there's half a chance i'll be dragging you out of
29:31there backwards by about midday so that's in two weeks time so stay with us for that one's going to
29:36be big right now the focus though is about these guys on screen and we've got garth tander in fifth
29:41position at the moment the holden racing team he's 8.1 seconds behind the race leader jamie wincup
29:47it's wincup lounge van gisberg and mclaughlin tander who i just spoke of this little warfare
29:52that's going on at the back of the pack continues between dalga and dale wood and they're playing
29:57for keeps actually doesn't make a lot of sense quite frankly but that's what they're doing and
30:02here it is again from the other angle just to confirm the silliness so neither one of them this has
30:09been ongoing and not sufficient room being left there and too much of that stuff and the good folks in
30:15race control they've got televisions as well they do keep a close eye on all that so there might be
30:20a little trip to the headmaster at the end of this one i would say for sure this is a great battle
30:25winter bottom has been right behind tander for the whole race garth has dropped off mclaughlin a
30:32little bit so he speaks not quite as good on the previous lap he was just in the early 13s so he's
30:39about three or four tenths of a second slower than the lead guys but winter bottom just can't find a way
30:45by and this battle still is red hot with their gisberg right behind loud you can see lounge has
30:53bumped those tires coming onto the front straight really hard you see that it's bent the front air
30:57down and bent the front guard lounge cars showing evidence and we've seen this on occasion of sliding
31:02you look at the yes i can see on the front left guard there the join between the splitter and the
31:06actual guard there's an air gap that's open but craig's car's wagging the tail at the moment so van
31:11gusbergen is on him right on him looking for the benefit of the draft 250 255 260 265 he looks but
31:23tucks back in and there's the mark that mark spoke on sounds like a stutter but there's a bit of tire
31:30scuff on there that's the tire bundle coming onto the straight which is quite a heavy tire bundle and
31:37that was telling looking at that shot coming off turn one because lounge used every last millimetre
31:44not a skerrick of road left but for van gisbergen positioned the car tight and shallow
31:49drove it clean and neat no evidence of sliding at all so craig's getting the elbows up a bit here
31:54at the moment van gisbergen is eventually going to slice and dice here one of the things that's
31:58it's a drama is that it's not necessarily the run that he's getting on the straight because
32:03we saw a little bit of that toe effect but it's the heat soak so when you're in behind another car
32:08in darwin the engine temperature even all the temperatures the air temperature under bonnet
32:13temperature cabin temperature brake temperature tire temperature everything is incredibly hot and when
32:20you've got the intake air temperature as high as it is when you're right behind another car it does
32:25affect the engine speed and therefore the normal tow that you would get at a normal racetrack the ambient
32:31conditions affect that you don't actually get anywhere near that toe that you would normally
32:36see you can see it right now you're in the toe you're in the slipstream you're just getting a
32:40little bit of effect but not much only about half to three quarters of a car length on a normal
32:46straight in colder conditions you would expect to see two or three car lengths if you've got that sort
32:51of run we raced the question mark just prior to the start of the race about the brakes on scotty
32:57mclaughlin's car looks like he's hanging in nicely there at the moment he's still only four and a
33:00half seconds off the lead this argument between red and blue continues here at the moment it's
33:05tander v winterbottom winterbottom looks like he's got pace at the moment tries to force a gap up the
33:11inside not quite there a little bit of rubbing contact but not much just a tap tap coming into
33:18this weekend excluding those two qualifiers we've just been through winterbottom's a remarkable record
33:23here 11 of the last 12 races has qualified inside the top five that's handsome and nine of the last
33:2912 races here he's been on the podium oh lee holdsworth finally under pressure that mistake
33:36at the bottom of the straight that lets bright go through and in fact so did cool time
33:42courtney james almost followed him i was about to say there's there's a bit of me too in all that
33:47because jason bright had his hand up to buy some as well they were all in trouble yeah they were all
33:52out of control yeah okay boys and girls hands up who'd like to tour the paddock
34:01mark dudden team engineer here red bull racing australia this is fantastic both jamie and craig back up
34:07one two in this race it's great for you guys to be back up the front it is but there's still a lot of
34:13racing laps to go so it's uh it's quite nerve-wracking actually because it's getting to the
34:17point where the tire life will really start to play apart so uh fingers crossed the boys are doing a
34:22great job that they stay up there what's happened over the last five weeks i know you had a very
34:26important test day out at queensland raceway what's really changed back at the workshop and uh between
34:31the last couple of race events yeah we had a had a crucial test day we could have had it a bit earlier
34:36possibly um and it was just understanding we just worked hard to not reinvent the wheel but really
34:41understand what we think is going to make these cars tick in general and up here a really important
34:46question that everyone wants to know is what did roland buy craig for the big 4-0 birthday today
34:52i mean i haven't seen anything apart from a race suit that says 40 so he might have been a bit cheap
34:56there so you better give him some grief hopefully he'll just get a podium finish for this one that would
35:00be uh surpassing up yeah that'd be fantastic thanks dado cheer around craig loud's just managed to take a
35:06a little bit of the heat out in the last couple of laps from van gisberg and and equally he's been
35:11able to steady down the car it's just running in a straight line at the moment that it was a few
35:15laps ago here we are again with uh winter bottom and tander this is the battle for fifth and sixth
35:19that we made reference to earlier i asked jamie after his test you know whether it was a valuable
35:25outing he said we got a really good solid day lots and lots of kilometers and a lot of data said what
35:30we do with that data is another question but we certainly got some value out of it i think today
35:33they're answering the question that it was pretty valuable we think it's a power steering drama by
35:39the way that sidelined will davison quick break back in the tick the temperatures rising in the
35:48battle between garth tander and mark winterbottom it's fifth and sixth at the moment they're on lap 26
35:53of 35 and these two have had a great battle in the last several laps in fact coming off the final
35:58corner on the last lap winterbottom gave tander just a little touch-up coming onto the straight so it's
36:03very close a bit of aggravation here and there and rubber strips just come off todd kelly's car
36:10uh todd's down the order in 19th there at the moment and that's deposited itself in the middle
36:14of the racetrack super slow-mo replay of shane van gisbergen getting a bit of air up at turn 10
36:20that new curb profile up there and you can see that gap has opened up ever so slightly between
36:24lounges and van gisbergen so a bit of the pressure's just come out of that battle and here's that touch-up
36:29that i spoke of a moment ago between frosty and garth tander coming onto the straight just gives
36:34him a little love bite as garth's about to put the power down it looked more damning from this angle
36:42and the two of them shot down the straight didn't exchange positions
36:46but garth is well and truly aware of the fact that frosty's there in fact at the moment garth's on for
36:51equal best result of the season he was fifth in one of the races in new zealand he's fifth
36:56to the racetrack at the moment but he's just having to hang on a little bit it seems relative
37:00to winter bottom who's got a bit of pace but struggling to use it right now hey frosty's feeling
37:05a little bit hot under the collar we've got the answer and he'll know this is waiting for him
37:09this is frosty's ice bath it is currently set at 10 degrees celsius think about these temperatures
37:14for a minute it is high 30s outside at the moment it's over 60 degrees celsius inside the car this
37:20is 10 degrees and just putting your hands in you can feel how cold that is that is going to be a
37:24major body shock but on a day when we're talking about driver recovery and driver fatigue it is so
37:29crucial that the drivers get in and out of the car and recover before the next race this is the
37:33secret all of the drivers will come out of the car straight to the back of the garage into the a
37:38trailers and into the ice baths to cool down and recover before the next race i bet frosty's thinking
37:43about this right now guys i bet you he is too brett in fact you were in cold conditions though through
37:50the week and last couple of days so i'm keen to get back in scapey yeah yeah exactly big transfer
37:56of temperature for you from uh queensland exactly from queensland to darwin body shock exactly and that'll
38:02be what mark winterbottom experiences at the end of this race we were the first to do that in about
38:08i reckon about year 2000 we first started to do that when you do dive in it's pretty wild
38:13takes the breath away so here's this seesaw battle going on between tander and widderbottom
38:23both of them with vast experience it's a case of who blinks at the moment tander looks like the car
38:30is just slipping around underneath him a little bit more than he'd ideally like but because of the
38:35amount of experience he's got he knows where to position the car he now has had to stop sliding it
38:40he's done 492 v8 supercar races and the bloke that's taking us for a ride at the moment
38:49has done 326 grab the person frosty's engineer saying keep the pressure up he's well aware actually
38:55he was hot hard cut on the red limiter there at seven five well that stops you so when you get to
39:01that you can't go any faster so that actually affects the ability to get down the inside he's
39:05he's gonna have to do it somewhere else tander will be sizing all this up as well the bit that
39:12i love about these contests these two guys absolute pros they're driving 10 tenths they're driving to
39:18the millimeter it's all slowed down in their minds they know exactly where they need to position the
39:23car they know what they can and can't get away with in terms of brakes and tire wear the cars are
39:28nothing like they were in qualifying they're running around at the moment in high mid to high 11s so
39:34they've lost a pile of sting in grip but they still read the cars they still know where to break at the
39:39last possible moment where and how to apply the throttle and they're fighting back everything that's
39:45working against them super soak of the additional temperature going into the front of frosty's car for
39:50example it breaks even a good day here at the bottom of the straighter at 950 degrees he's got
39:55another tonne a half in front of him that generates heat just to add insult to injury tires get worse with
40:02every lap it's been a very impressive performance with wind cover 13 0 8 on that lap he's half a second
40:12faster than anybody else in the field with a 4.5 second lead over lounge lucker well just to expand
40:20on what new was saying and you were saying earlier mark about the airflow at the front of the cars
40:24so here is some Ford performance racing parts let's just keep an eye on that battle in the background
40:28so here's mark's brakes this is his front brake 395 across diameter here's a rear one if i put that on top
40:35you can see they're somewhat smaller they're 355 now remember we've already got a little bit of bias to
40:40the front of the car in terms of our brake bias and we rely heavily on the air ducts going in here
40:46these exclusively supply air via these ducts into the brake discs now when you're in front of a car
40:54or behind a car sorry the high pressure air that builds up around here becomes disturbed so you don't
40:59get that nice airflow the second part of that because these are running at about a thousand as neil said
41:04these ones closer to 700 of course this does have some airflow in the rear doesn't these ones get a lot
41:10hotter and when you go big stop at turn one big stop at turn two and then go down into the hairpin
41:15it's very very hard to pull the car up because these haven't had airflow over the top of them
41:19makes it very very critical for car balance yeah good pickup larko that's um a very good explanation of
41:26the problem that mark winterbottom is experiencing behind garth tander and when that hexer happens to
41:32your car you put almost put yourself in a position where you really can't attack at turn one
41:38this is probably the area that he's going to have to focus on just here over a little rise and down
41:43the inside into five that's one of the spots he gave him a little bump then he's actually done a
41:48really nice job off this exit and this is the next spot so it's five or six will be the two areas
41:56that he looks like he's got a little margin over tander and it's only very small so he's going to have to
42:02judge it very carefully and you've got to think about risk reward here in this as well so
42:08back to this battle between lounge and gisberger we'll come back to frosty and tander because this
42:13one's live and back up once again and gisbergen has perhaps given the ties
42:18a little rest and he's having another crack at lounge at the moment it's a red bull one two
42:23four point nine seconds is the gap wink up to lounge you can see the gap back to the volvo there
42:29as well and then tander you can barely see frosty who's still tucked in under the rear wing of the
42:35holden now he has a look it's just limited by the fact that the car is literally out of breath at that
42:42point down there oh he's up it he's done it he's got up the inside but tander's still going to hold
42:47what will become the inside line when they get when they get to that right hander we've seen cars go
42:53around the nose of other cars there in years gone by frosty again the assault tries to go down the
43:00inside can't get it done this is a great contest when you're the series leader what you said before
43:06yeah risk and reward exactly big championship drama if you end up in a major incident or a
43:13serious problem with wheel contact with tander if you're going to make a pass you've got to make a
43:18really authoritative proper maneuver if he gets past a pascal panda it'll be 55 points for a fifth
43:26where he is at the moment for frosty it's 51 points so the argument is worth four points we've seen
43:32championships decided by less than that in the modern era so they all know how important it is
43:37to make margin but you can't afford to tip it off the road no doubt look at this great vision the two
43:44guys sliding the cars across the top of the hill at turn 10 van gisbergen was on the curb lounges had
43:51missed the curb and he was out sideways as this battle resumes it has just been so intense with these
43:58two guys the whole race tander has not got quite the car pace he's held winner bottom up winner bottom
44:05can't find a way by he's had a go at five he's had a go at six he's had a go at one he's actually had a
44:11little go at turn 14 when he made contact with tander this is on board at five and as he comes out
44:18he's just a little bit too much wheel spin this is where he made contact last year g almost he almost
44:24drilled the back of tander's car there that's where he made contact with dave reynolds last year that
44:29had the makings of a big dive bomb then didn't it held my breath for a moment here we go back to bright
44:34courtney coultard seven eight nine there's a little gap back to lee holdsworth remember that lee went
44:40wide down at turn one he's recovered there is a little glimpse of him we're riding with james courtney this is
44:46turn 10. so not a bad run here for the holden racing team fifth at the moment for garth tander in car
44:56number two and courtney in eighth car number 22. just behind holdsworth who we saw him go off the end
45:05of the main straight which bright courtney almost went with him so holdsworth did get back on so he's
45:1110th but james moffett the first of the nissons with caruso still right behind him there at 11th and 12.
45:19so five manufacturers in the top 11 cars lee holdsworth did a good job to recover and resume
45:28which is just at the back of the shot there now as you come through that little roller coaster
45:32it's one of the best corners in australian motorsport with a little change direction a little rise a little
45:38bump before turn five and very fast 215 kilometers an hour slowing the car to 95 kilometers an hour
45:48this is a replay of a big brake lock there for van gisbergen and see they all use the inside
45:54curb because what it does it tucks the car in and there's two different lines on the exit some guys run
45:59right out past the exit curb and use the concrete apron on the exit some don't use the exit curb at all so
46:07some make a very narrow exit and some make a very wide exit at turn six less than 2.8 kilometers to
46:14run now final lap of the race we go back on board with pepsi max for performance racing mark winterbottom
46:21last ditch desperate attempt to have a look down the inside in ellie ran himself wide
46:26they're both absolutely on the mat here nothing left tander is fifth winterbottom is sixth
46:35they're 16 odd seconds away from the lead of the motor race wincup's got it stitched up he's going to
46:42advance his cause important points for him remember there's another race to come later this afternoon
46:47and then it's double the points tomorrow then double the distance 200 kilometers
46:52tander clinging on to this spot at the moment here's our leader 4.9 seconds at the last measure
47:00fantastic performance once again wincup has done a brilliant job
47:06three hundred and twenty second race 79 wins well done jamie wincup
47:16his teammate craig lounge gets home in second 4.3 seconds is the gap shane van gisberg and vip pet foods
47:23home commodore in third and a resolution to this battle falls in favor of garth tander
47:28check it back then bright then courtney then cool tight on screen there lee holdsworth the tiny mistake
47:38but nice work to come in 10th top 10 results always a good thing then it's james moffett
47:44michael caruso dave reynolds chas mostard scott pie tim slade it's the top 16 cars and red bull racing
47:51australia in full celebration mode this was a good drive winterbottom knows you're leading the championship
47:58it was only worth four points to fire down the inside of garth tander and at the end i thought it was
48:04quite a composed professional approach from winterbottom not to make a mistake there this man
48:10did not make a mistake at all made a brilliant start and drove the car very very straight
48:17did not hurt the rear tires impeccable drive for win number four of 2014 he's got more wins against
48:24his name now than any other so far this season he's jumped clear of frosty and craig lounge
48:30gases it up cracks the door open to get a little bit of air through there
48:35a bit of freestyling to come back and say hi to the boys seven victories v8 supercar victories for
48:41the red bull racing australia team so far in 2014 between the teammates oh oh the doors come open
48:50that could have been bad the door come over then it flung back open it was going to hit those tires
48:55on the right we joked at v8 extra earlier in the day about the you know the antics post-race donuts
49:01and fences and that just about took out a driver's door it's not going to diminish from the drive
49:06though it was a great job took a break had a week off in barley had a successful test gathered a lot
49:13of data went back revisited the job thought about the task poured through the data it was an intense
49:20beginning of the 2014 championship season these guys have uh up the level once again so win cup and
49:28lounge victorious and the 4.35 margin between two of them they acknowledge each other and then
49:36shane van gisbergen making it holden one two and three volvo four another holden followed by the
49:41first forward mark winterbottom what about birthday present for the old boy there exactly he'd be he'd be
49:47happy with that that was a good drive in fact i would have said about lap 15 that van gisbergen was
49:52definitely going to get lounge that was a good fight back by craig i was sure it looked like he was in
49:57tons of trouble but sometimes the cars can trend differently also as the race goes or you can
50:02adjust the bars and dig your way out of it and lounge has been able to do it let's get down there
50:07and celebrate yeah and please celebrate to neil jamie win cup congratulations exactly when you needed it
50:12at this time of the year you got the win well done yeah really good start to a to a hot um hot big
50:18hot weekend but um both cars were clearly good we've made some improvements over the over the mini
50:22break which is nice so hopefully we can keep this momentum through to the end of the year mark
50:26dutton said you had a great test day it's obviously produced some fruit for you yeah we just we're
50:31running you know mid pack and we had a few few up and down rounds so and we don't like doing that so
50:36we really put our head down and everyone's done a really good job actually they've taken a bit of
50:39a risk and um you know it's paid off so still a long way to go but we've certainly improved from the
50:44start of the year yeah it's a great result positive outcome and we've got a magnificent trophy to
50:48present to you too jamie congratulations pop that on the mantelpiece at home uh speaking of trophies
50:53craig lounge congratulations 40th birthday and a great way to celebrate on the podium here with us
50:58well done yeah thanks barrett i think that i made a mistake in the last corner which uh you know
51:02damaged car a little bit but it wasn't uh you know we just didn't have the pace of jamie today
51:05and he did a great job got a good start we managed to get a good start and get into second position we
51:10had a great uh battle with gizzy here but uh look you know it's a great uh it's a credit to the team
51:14we've had a test day we've turned things around but i think as jamie said it's not over yet we've still
51:18got another race another one big one tomorrow so uh fingers crossed it all goes like the same
51:22way big bounce back for you guys well done craig enjoy the trophy and congratulations and shane
51:26van gisbergen who's been quick all weekend great sessions yesterday uh shane for you and you've
51:31delivered again in this race well done on third place yeah we had a great start craig and i moved
51:35forward and had a great battle with scotty on the first lap didn't even have to wave my middle finger
51:39at him but um yeah awesome race and with craig i was a little bit quicker but um yeah he just put his
51:44car in all the right places not blocking just good positioning and uh it was a great battle really
51:48enjoyed it so another race to sarvo hopefully we can move forward from eighth but um stoked to be
51:53on the podium great day we're looking forward to more great racing and the trophy for you as well
51:57for third place congratulations to sky city's triple crown guff tander you certainly couldn't
52:03rest at all during that race you had mark winter bottoms on your back the whole time how are you
52:08feeling after that one a little bit uh a little bit tired uh tight warm um yeah look frosty had a bit
52:14of speed on us but probably not enough to get by so um we were stronger in some parts he was stronger
52:19in others so as long as i covered him off in those areas where he was stronger than me we could keep
52:22him behind so yeah it was good racing like you know he he a bit of morse coat on my rear bumper
52:27a couple of times but that's that's part of the deal so um no it was good fun i know there's not a lot
52:31of time between races this is important time that you can spend with your engineers and with you guys to
52:35get the car tuned for the next race yeah it is we're going to talk a little bit about the car
52:38i'm going to go get in the ice bath because it's nice and cold so um yeah yeah look it's uh we can tune her up i think our
52:43speed's okay we just need the tire to live a little longer thanks god cool
52:48so let's have a look at the results after race number 17 and sky city triple crowns off to a
52:53great start for jamie win cup for 2014. 4.3 seconds was the gap to his teammate shane van gisberg and
52:59scotty mclaughlin nice job in the volvo james moffat and his teammate michael caruso just outside
53:05the top 10 for nissan davy reynolds there in 13th he'll be a bit disappointed with that they're
53:09still searching for speed in that car looking further down wood dalga and perkat
53:13jack perkins and will davis and the problem with the power steering on that car scafie
53:18yes it got hurt early on is the scenario in the points and it's tightened up ms so it's 83 points
53:26now between mark winterbottom and craig lounge so valuable points gained there in this little battle
53:30but winterbottom still well and truly in control that's a handy margin nonetheless baby cool tart hasn't
53:36he done a brilliant job and of course those extra points for win cup have really helped the cause
53:43so the crowd really enjoying their v8 supercar racing up here at the top end as always here's
53:52the highlights of race number 17 and what a great battle it was at the start there wing cup a
53:57brilliant start to get away from mclaughlin and they got in and around turn one there was a great
54:03exchange with mclaughlin and van gisbergen through that area right there a little bit of contact now
54:10with rick kelly and slade coming off turn one and there was some really good exchanges through the
54:19field in fact the whole field at one stage there was a battle right through to the final cars which
54:25were perkins and daldrin and percat there was a fair bit of biffing and barging too there was a lot of
54:31nudging and bumping that was dade reynolds i've been behind michael caruso there's another one down here
54:38where there was a little bit of an exchange onto the straight earlier and that was percat wood
54:46and dahlgren with perkins right behind them then that little bump a little nudge wide by wood then
54:52a little retaliation by dahlgren and a little another view of that one there a little bit of
54:58drama there though a little bit of chat i would think in the stewards room regarding that one and
55:03this was this great battle with van gisberg and and lounge we thought for sure that lounge was gone so
55:09great job to hang on we also thought the tandem was gone because winter bottom got up the inside and
55:14then they're alongside it to a little bit of a bump they're a little cheeky with garth then just
55:19moving it across and he was able to hold off mark woodwater but this man it was an impeccable drive
55:26neil it was a really sound it was wing cup at his best that's the style of drive we're used to seeing
55:32him for win number four of 2014 so after the break we've got more great motor racing action v8 utes race
55:40number one live and coming up the boys and their bikes and still to come we've got race number 18
55:46of our v8 supercars championship of 2014 it's all going on up here in darwin we hope you're enjoying the
55:51show
