US President Donald Trump said in an interview broadcast on Tuesday (May 13) that he could see himself dealing directly with Chinese President Xi Jinping on the final details of a US-China trade deal.  Asked about Qatar's offer of a Boeing 747-8 airplane, Trump repeated it would be "stupid" not to accept the gift. 00:06And that would be like opening up a whole new world.

00:09And I think it would be even better for China.

00:11So I think we'll be able to make that deal, I hope.

00:13At any point, do you foresee yourself dealing directly with President Xi on the final details of this deal?

00:21Yeah, I could see that.

00:22I mean, I'm not sure that it would be necessary, but that happened with the U.K.

00:27So anyway, so they said to me, we would like to, in effect, we would like to make a gift.

00:34You've done so many things.

00:35And we'd like to make a gift to the Defense Department, which is where it's going.

00:41And I said, well, that's nice.

00:43Now, some people say, oh, you shouldn't accept gifts for the country.

00:47My attitude is, why wouldn't I accept a gift?

00:50We're giving to everybody else.

00:52Why wouldn't I accept a gift?

00:53Because it's going to be a couple of years, I think, before the Boeings are finished.

00:57And they'll be wonderful when they're finished, but that's a long time.

01:01Isn't part of your argument how the United States has paid untold billions and trillions of dollars securing every aspect of the world?

01:11Well, I said that.

01:12I said, you know, we've secured that part of the world for many years.

01:15So if somebody makes a gift, and I'm not getting, I get nothing, I get to fly it like any other president would.

01:23But I thought it was a beautiful gesture.

01:25Now, there are those that say we shouldn't be accepting gifts to the Defense Department.

01:29And I would say only a stupid person would say that.

01:32Why wouldn't we do that?

01:33And so it helps us out because we'll have a relatively new plane instead of having 40-year-old planes.

01:39And I just thought it was something we could get involved in.

01:43And I did a good job.

01:45Marco did a good job.

01:46And JD did a good job.

01:48We sort of were a team.

01:50And we, I think, convinced them to let's have peace and let's go and make trade deals.
