Amita, daughter of Ajitkumar Chakraborty was married to Ajindranath, son of Dwijendranath Tagore on 10th March, 1926. A poem was written on this occasion named 'Naba-badhu' that read – 'Basanter duti tumi …'. Lyrics of this poem was later altered to this song. The claim made by Probhatkumar Mukhopadhyay that it was written for the marriage of Rameshchandra Majumdar appears to be dubious.
