00:00it's another supercar Saturday here on seven for the 15th straight year the V8 caravan has
00:13rolled into Queensland Raceway for the coats higher Ipswich 360 conditions are absolutely
00:18perfect nice sunny Saturday afternoon is developing quite warm when you stand out
00:24there in the sun for too long so we're getting ready for qualifying this is event number eight
00:28on the V8 supercar calendar the second of three rounds this year in the Sunshine State for about
00:3440 minutes southwest of Brisbane and this is Heartland V8 supercar city joining me in commentary
00:39as always Mark Scaife and Neil Crompton the famous paperclip Crompo it is and it's just a little over
00:44three kilometers Matt six corners and because we're leaping into qualifying now we're going to
00:48talk about sectors the first one ends in the braking area to turn three the second one halfway between
00:53turns five and six got quite a high average speed here of just over 160 kilometers an hour
00:58they're at 100 full throttle for about 47 percent of the lap and the fastest corner into turn one and
01:06155 kilometers an hour quite complex to set up for always produces wild racing and all 28 cars now
01:12filing out onto the racetrack in preparation for this final qualifying for race 22 and the interesting
01:19part Crompo is that because they're limited for tires for the weekend soft tire weekend totally
01:25they've got the option of driving out on brand new tires to get this started so they won't want to
01:30waste them some of the guys are going to drive out on wet tires so it'll be interesting to see
01:33how that speed rolls out when the guys are trying to do a good lap and the other guys are 10 seconds a
01:38lap slower so the format for today this 20 minute qualifying session of course no shootout then race 22 of
01:44the series it is the 60 60 super sprint 40 laps with a halftime break the rolling restart is not to be
01:51missed that is coming up later on this afternoon and as far as pole positions go so far this year
01:57we've had seven different pole sitters jamie wing cup jason bright shane van gisbergen fabian
02:02coulthard davy reynolds mark winterbottom and james courtney but in terms of this track well marcus
02:08ambrose was the king of qualifying here with five pole positions the most of the current field is
02:13craig lowndes with four afternoon to mark larkham yeah scafie just thanks mate to add to your point
02:18there mate about two-thirds of the field went out on wet tires there so uh that's going to be
02:23to see if they get in the way of the 10 or so cars that are out on new tires but that's good news mate
02:28because that means uh two-thirds of the field towards the back end of this session it's going to be
02:32game on as we know like they'll need to be a little bit careful because even though it doesn't look
02:37or feel like it at the moment the forecast actually says officially that there could be showers
02:41one thing that you don't want to do is eat too much into the 12 tire wet tire bank that you have
02:46and knock those around as we go now to the points leader and reigning champion jamie wing cup
02:51he's had his lead whittled down to 111 points now this has been the story of practice all three of
02:58the erebus motorsport v8 entries the amg e63s have been quick that's the lee holdsworth car maro engel
03:04has been quick from germany as well and tim slade and slade's got form here in fact they've all
03:09done very well here and this is their home test track
03:12so jamie wing cup a three-time pole sitter at this circuit but he's only had one race win
03:21which is quite extraordinary given the numbers that he's been racking up and this is his
03:26home test track as well so we go on board with the red bull racing australia commodore
03:30one approach down to turn one that big bump still there sure is got resurfaced last year this track
03:39as a result of the unfortunate flooding a couple of years back but it's a wild ride into one it's a
03:45wild ride into three he's just coming off the high speed right hander at two at the moment keeps it on
03:50top of the curbing there it's very easy to fall off the back and end up in the dirt and this was the
03:54scene of his very first v8 supercar career pole way back when there's the bump he's actually backed
04:00away from it here into turn three boys just talking about timmy slade there i suspect he's going to be
04:06in for a good weekend he just cycled through the pit lane there pulled his new soft tires off
04:10diagonal diagonal i can't say that i'll let you say that diagonal that is hard to say give it a crack
04:17let's go for diagonal he swapped them around side to side front to back so what that means you idiots
04:26i'm the idiot okay what that means is that the tire that he's put a little bit of temperature into
04:31is the left rear tire it's been mostly right here because stop laughing i'm being serious
04:35the left rear tire will have quite a bit of heat into it he's put now that onto the right front which
04:40means when he gets down there to turn four the car will actually turn so expect this run he's on right
04:45now to be a good one
04:46go back to your whiteboard mate you might have to spell it out phonetically
04:54so you can see that tim's now beginning to cycle up getting warmth into those tires
05:02headlights on is typically assigned to other drivers that you're about to do your qualifying lap
05:08this is todd kelly jack daniels racing
05:10they definitely went out neil i was talking to todd and rick before we come into the compbox for
05:16qualifying they definitely went straight out on brand new tires so they didn't choose to warm those
05:21cars up as like i said two-thirds of the field went out on west to warm the car up warm the brakes up
05:26and the engine temperature up make sure the car's ready to go before they put the tires on to avoid
05:31wasting a set of spread tires they haven't had a great run so far in three practice sessions that
05:37we've had we had two extended sessions yesterday and one earlier on today and all four of their cars have
05:42been having a bit of a battle in the promo lead up to the event they he and his brother rick got to go
05:47for a bit of a blaze in some old war aircraft would have been a bit of fun were you flying it or no
05:53here's lee holdsworth so to lago's point we'll keep an eye on these guys this weekend
05:59a little bit of understeer was plaguing them yesterday but as i said to matt earlier on in
06:04v8 extra now the moment of truth because everybody gets onto the same tire we never know precisely the
06:09tire quality and condition through practice but now we do everybody's on the dunlop soft tire
06:14so that's a one ten two for lee holdsworth
06:19who will continue on with this one the irwin racer
06:25over here last year you had that fire in the pit it was pretty dramatic
06:30and on the subject of dramatic that's a wild shot on the exit of turn two the curb cam there oh look
06:37at this who's in the way in the braking area at three whoever it was i think got out of the way just in
06:41time holdsworth moment on 10-2 in position three but you'll need to find a lot more than that
06:51and look at the traffic is always a worry isn't it
06:55you mentioned that fire last year remember early on in the season when they were taping lee's boots
07:00up down in adelaide because of the extreme heat in the cockpit it's still a bit of an issue in the
07:05airbus amg's but his biggest issue right now is threading his way through this field trying to find
07:13a clean run he's doing it well so far as fabian koultar just moves aside so a green box can you
07:19believe it in the second sector which is where all that traffic was let's see what this translates to
07:24in an overall time it's a 1099 but it did cost him time it's good enough to get into the nines and go
07:29position one for lee but he was offline in that final corner the other thing about the traffic
07:34is that you don't physically need to tangle with the other cars but to impact your lap speed here's
07:39slade responding to the top on a nine seven it's just their proximity because it it takes your focus
07:45away from driving the car you're worrying about what the other guy's going to do you may not find
07:50that precise last possible moment to get onto the brake pedal in the critical locations of which there
07:54are four around here and what it does to crop over is if the car's parked we see wink up there looking
08:00at his lap versus his best lap he did a very good job in the previous session earlier today and he'd be
08:05comparing that lap versus the early performance but what happens the car's parked in the braking area
08:10if you run wide if you've actually been too committed you know you're going to make contact
08:14so what neil said is absolutely right you don't actually have to run over the car the car just in
08:18your proximity makes a difference it's enough of a distraction and that's what happened to
08:23lee in that final corner then with fabian coulthard on the outside took him much higher and wider than
08:28he'd ideally like to be he went out of sync with everyone got a lot of traffic next lap was too bad
08:35so that's craig lounge talking to jeremy moore thank you bring it on in still one minute to go in the
08:41he's one minute 9.8 at the moment for position three lounge and you heard him say that he was out of
08:45sync so it's slade winter bottom lachlan now to three lounge goes down into position four then
08:50coultard mostard premer alex davidson and in the pit lane at the moment holds worth the win cup
08:59randall's now second
09:02alex premise done the fastest second sector 53 42. will davidson just jumped into sixth and here's
09:11his teammate mark winter bottom up to the first of the only two left handers here turn four
09:21it's a great forward saturday at townsville for pepsi max sport performance racing
09:27got valuable points and really now winter bottom's well into this championship battle earlier in the
09:32year he just couldn't get it right the team for having a real battle for on his behalf to try and
09:37get him in the game while he's there now
09:40premer come up to third with that lap that's a nine seven seven
09:44so nine seven five fabio called that now nine seven three
09:48so seven three seven five seven six seven seven nine five six cars within six hundredths of a second
09:55this is the man that was fastest in the final practice this morning will davidson he achieved
10:03stunning time it was a one minute 9.2 that's still half a second better than what we're seeing out
10:07there now but it is considerably warmer there's a lot of ultraviolet on the track at the moment
10:12new leader jason bright 1094 van gisbergen slots into fourth hasn't been a happy hunting around in the
10:20recent past for jason bright he lost a little bit of ground in the championship battle in the last
10:26couple of race meetings
10:30now we get into this phase where everybody's had their first crack and then they populate the
10:34pit lane and it gets very very busy in there it's all happening in the lane at the moment neil and
10:40just taking a look at the time sheets at the moment and tim slade going well currently sitting in
10:45sixth spot and rostone there's been a a marked improvement in the arabis cars this weekend
10:49practice you've been very strong so far i know it's early days but what have you been doing
10:53oh just been grafting grafting away really um you know i think in the last three or four race
11:00meetings you can see we just slightly moving forward and forward just with bits and pieces going on and
11:04everything coming together so uh still 10 minutes to go here and we just got to hang in there great to
11:10see you up there james courtney has just joined the list into second 1095 it was a good first sector for
11:17david reynolds and not so the final two hey hey barrett if i can just uh chime in there and give you
11:25the rostone version of grafting and he deserves credit i mean he has got his feet on the floor
11:31on the workshop floor in the engine shop in particular and really got his hands on the task and i reckon
11:36that's terrific and he's had an impact yeah absolutely and they're having a good start to the weekend it
11:41would be great to see that continue right throughout the races but there's plenty of
11:45pace in the arabis motorsport amgs but right now jason bright leads the way for holden halfway through
11:51qualifying
11:55welcome back to the coats higher ipswich 360 this is qualifying for this afternoon 60 60 super sprint
12:02format and as you can see there's not a lot going on on the track most of the cars still in pit lane but
12:08there has been a change in the break james courtney now heads the list the time to beat 109.49
12:16top 10 is courtney bright will davison scott mclaughlin fabian coultard shane van gisbergen mark
12:22winterbottom then tim slade david reynolds and alex premer as you can see there matt most of the field
12:28in pit lane with a little over five minutes to go this will be fantastic guys throwing tires at cars
12:34and all the normal traffic drama that evolves in the last segment of qualifying they'll go faster
12:39now because the cloud coverage just come over we made the comment before about how hot it is
12:43but it's quite overcast there now and that will definitely make a difference around this place
12:48two or three tenths of a second on the subject of time you've got to go all the way back to 20th place
12:53for it to get beyond half a second margin from first to 20th which is pretty tight so find a little
12:57bit of time and you'll find a big gain in that lineup and the other changing weather condition
13:02is there's a bit of a tailwind now for the first time all day the flags that along the main straight
13:07are actually blowing so they've got a bit of a tailwind down there to turn one
13:15so now if you can get out there on a decent set of tires get a little bit of track space there is an
13:20opportunity to jump the rest of the field because we'll see the same old deal with congestion after
13:24this oh that was messed up in the braking area for todd kelly it's that thing again of traffic
13:29proximity here we go here comes peak out courtney bright will davison mclaughlin
13:39coultard van gisbergen winterbottom slade reynolds crema that's the 10. jamie winkup our championship leader is
13:46in 17. but he did this in the third and final practice session didn't do much and then when he did
13:54pull the trigger he was pretty effective so we'll keep an eye on him meantime fabian coultard looks
13:59quick and so does lee holdsworth as you can see on the graphic there with the green box to the first
14:04sector so todd backed it off after the little mistake that you picked up on now he just started
14:08the lap what he did is he ran really wide turned it back on itself and come off the final corner
14:13perfectly straight so that will give him his best speed down to turn one the problem is with all those
14:18cars going out this would be worse for him now in fact that was very wide sorry mark lee holdsworth
14:25couldn't get it stopped and turned at six he got a great time going into the final corner but did that
14:31hurt the final analysis yes he's stuck in 14th his best qualifying effort so far this season lee has been
14:3813th twice let's watch this one from fabian coultard it's a winner 1093 that's only a tiny fraction from the
14:46the best time we've seen all weekend which was a nine two six eight five for will davison here we
14:52are on board at turn two with fabian it's his birthday on sunday so happy birthday tomorrow for fab
15:00be a nice present if he could grab a whole position coming into this weekend he's gone very well this
15:06year although together with jason bright the last couple of rounds haven't been quite what they'd hoped
15:10for but remember he was on the podium in townsville but it's so tight at the top at the moment you've only
15:15got to miss the setup by a whisker and it hurts that points tally so todd kelly's down in 26th and
15:20that's put him to fourth nine five five very well done todd kelly great lap and you can see how
15:27accurate he was at the end of that lap he did a really good job to get it started he made the apex
15:31perfectly at the final corner and that's a great job nine five five that's the best they've gone all
15:36weekend by a long way you've got to go back ten years with todd to find the last time that he was
15:41on a podium here so that's great clearly it was tires that was holding them back in the early part of
15:45the weekend courtney's on a good lap time here at the moment and it was a just oh so no win cup
15:53nine two seven so courtney was only one one hundred slower than his best win cup then cool
15:58tard lounge position three on a nine three and scotty mclaughlin was looking very quick in the
16:04first sector but he must have run into some traffic that was pretty wild from right at the end of that
16:13so let's check out mclaughlin yeah he's got a bit of traffic around him but he goes up to second good
16:17job remember he had the career best personal best also obviously for the season up in townsville scotty
16:25mclaughlin so he's on fire at the moment with his qualifying that's a great job winter bottom to
16:31five and six winter bottom davison cars five and six fifth and six davison there a little bit wide
16:39he was very fast he was the fastest guy as neil said before with a nine two six chas molster just
16:45jumped into tenth and will davison moved up as well we're looking at frosty mark winter bottom's
16:50fifth in car five dave reynolds same has gone up to knock will davison off james courtney back to
16:56ninth now todd kelly also back to 11th after all that flurry of activity at the top of the top ten
17:03van gisbergen has gone to eight win cups pulled into the pit lane so it's a question now of those
17:09completing their lap with a minute remaining here's shane van gisbergen home test track for him first time
17:15in something other than an sp tools forward he's in the vip pet foods entry he's in eighth at the
17:21moment in car number 97 as we go back on board with mark winter bottom at the final corner
17:29so wing cup is letting that time stand in pit lane he'll just have his eyes on the time sheets now as
17:36winter bottom cut knock it off this time so it's wing cut the block and cools up winter bottom fourth
17:45but that was the best time we've seen from frosty that nine three that we
17:49rode with him then tim slade into the top ten ninth
17:58so it's just a matter of wait and see in the dying seconds here the lights are off for alex davidson
18:03he's down in 17th too much roll a lot of roll in that car it's really evident there in turn four
18:09hit exit is now closed so the clock struck zero now it's a question of those finishing this lap
18:16courtney up to fifth so wink up mclaughlin colthard winter bottom courtney lounge dave reynolds van gisberg
18:22and tim slade great job will davidson jason bright austin alex davidson they're 12th todd kelly now down to 14th
18:32garth tander way down in 19th
18:37his teammate fifth it was funny with tander because he started a subsequent lap and he was quick
18:43to the end of the first sector
18:45really good job
18:49that's uh richard holway engineer for scott mclaughlin it was because he finished behind this man
18:54just 0.033 behind so that equals scottie mclaughlin's career best and jamie wing cup gets his
19:02ninth pole position of 2013 and he's 46th in his career so wing cup will have the youngster
19:10the kiwi next to him and a kiwi behind him fabian coulthard with mark winter bottom on the second row
19:14of the grid todd kelly fought hard in there 14th he will start his 400th career race
19:20in the first race tomorrow morrow engel in 18th there's garth tander down in 19
19:25dean fiore behind him and scotty pine michael caruso to bring it up from the rear of the field so
19:32that's qualifying done the 60 60 super sprint is still to come can jamie wing cup break the strangle
19:37hole that his teammate craig lownds has had on these races at this circuit the coats higher if switch
19:44360 don't leave us so it is the ninth time in 2013 that jamie wing cup has claimed the armor all
19:58pole position check but it's the first pole that he's had since we left austin texas so he's gone two
20:03events without starting from p1 now he will have the best view at the start of the 60 60 super sprint
20:10and mark dutton celebrates jamie wing cup is with mark barretta maddie i've got a little something
20:16for him too from armor all 1500 for pole jamie congratulations as maddie was just saying last
20:20time we saw you on pole was austin it's it's been a little bit of a break it must be nice to be back
20:24up the front yeah certainly for our standards it has we've um we dropped off a little bit and had
20:28our worst round at towns only three weeks ago so um yeah it means a lot actually big uh big relief to be
20:33to be uh quickest again you know after uh after that little bit of a drought the car was fantastic and it's
20:38going to be a long 60 60 event this afternoon it'd be easy after townsville to be a little bit
20:43deflated but somehow you guys have managed to to pick it up as you do so well how do you do that
20:49well we had a test day that was a big start most of our competitors had a test day before townsville
20:54so um with these new cars you know those those days on the track are massively important so um we had one
21:00last week which is great but um we're just juggling so many things you know and to get it all right
21:04um yeah full credit to the engineers they've uh they've dug deep and done a great job now the bloke
21:09who's sitting behind you second in the championship your teammate craig lounges is sixth on the grid will
21:13you glance back and see where he is and what he's doing uh he'll be there no without doubt it's 120
21:17k's a star though he's uh he's gone five on the trot so um don't don't write him off who knows what
21:22could happen look forward to a great race jamie well done thank you cheers strotty mclaughlin you know
21:27we're a big wrap for this young blake another front row start second one for the year mate and you
21:31just said to me you're still after a pole yeah i haven't got a pole in dunlop series either so
21:36i want that i want that and and and just that that that uh that satisfaction a bit on pole but
21:43that's enough buddy one of the things i really love about queensland raceway it's not just a driver
21:48circuit because as you know it's very very technical from the driving point of view it's very much a
21:52driver and car circuit if you're not at one you don't go anywhere around here and clearly you're at
21:57one with your car this weekend yeah i'm very lucky the last few years the last three years
22:01in dunlop series i was here with so much of the tracks in so i know the tracks are like the back
22:05of my hand they come of grm i've got a little bit of uh track knowledge so we can sort of put
22:09that into the car setup and see how we go sort of help this weekend and you know p2 is a great spot
22:14scotty we spoke earlier in the year and we talked about your expectations and clearly
22:18they're going up and up and up because you are achieving within this category so is that young bloke
22:22muster next year where would your expectations now be for this weekend oh you know same as they have
22:27been you know just go out there do the best you can um you know uh i'm i want to get a podium i'm in
22:34a good spot you know i've got to be there so um you know that's that's that's a game now but if i'm
22:38not top five i'm too competitive i get upset so i'm going to work on that good job button good luck
