Nikky Smedley, the original Laa-Laa from the Telebtubbies, will be a guest at this year’s Chichester Fringe.

00:00Good afternoon, my name is Phil Hewitt, group art citizen at Cessus Newspapers. Now something

00:06truly special is coming to the Chichester Fringe this year, Confessions of a Teletubby,

00:12featuring the original La La, Nikki Smedley. Now it's going to be, where is it going to

00:16be? 104, The Hornet, Chichester, June the 14th at quarter to six.

00:24That's correct.

00:25You were a Teletubby. Private performance, fantastic. You were a Teletubby for six years

00:32and you remember it was a show that was about love, wasn't it, and fun?

00:36Yes, it was love and fun and a kind of respect for small children and how bright they actually

00:45are.

00:46Absolutely, and I remember it was being massive just because it was not long after our son

00:50was born and it really did become fabulously popular. And when you look back at that, you

00:56can see why, can't you?

00:58Yeah, yes, absolutely. It was a programme that wasn't thrown together. It was made with such

01:04an enormous amount of care and attention that by very expert people. So, you know, I mean,

01:12we were just the puppets who got to interpret their vision, really.

01:16And was it fun to make or did pressure come with success?

01:21It was really fun to make. And the only pressure really was the time pressure that, because we

01:28filmed just during the summer because in the winter, you just wouldn't get the light levels

01:33and wouldn't be financially viable. So we had to pack a lot in. So that was for us. I mean,

01:40obviously, there was much more pressure for Anne and for the people who had money invested

01:47in it. But no, it was great. And I came from a dance background. So it was lovely to be able

01:52to employ those skills in a whole new way.

01:56And you're still wearing yellow.

01:59On brand. Got a show tonight.

02:03Absolutely. And looking back on it now, the confessions of a Teletubby. That sounds such

02:08an intriguing title, but it's all happy memory, presumably.

02:13Mostly it is. Mostly it's happy memory. But yes, my confessions, I really wanted to,

02:20I wanted to partly kind of share some of the backstage secrets with our audience, who are,

02:26of course, the original audience and now grown up people. So I didn't want to blow, I didn't

02:32want to spoil any dreams or anything, but just to share a little bit of the human experience

02:38that went into it and what it, yes, what it was like being an actual person in the middle

02:45of all of that.

02:46Absolutely. Well, it sounds a fabulous show. It's confessions of a Teletubby.
