00:04Reflections from the editor for Sunday, May 11, 2025.
00:08Journalism with courage and guts.
00:10Not so long ago, the world's most important media outlets were in the hands of a few.
00:15The problem? That this clashed with the dream of a truly free press,
00:19untethered to political or corporate interests.
00:22But then the digital revolution arrived, advertising collapsed,
00:25and many traditional media outlets closed or sold.
00:28Thousands of journalists were left out of work.
00:31The good news is that creativity began there.
00:34Alternative and digital media outlets were born, communication cooperatives,
00:39journalism was reinvented.
00:41Some brave individuals even managed to get their owners to hand over control to the workers.
00:46Others launched into hybrid media.
00:48Radio, television, digital, and thus the boom of cooperative multimedia was born.
00:54And we had to experience it firsthand.
00:5722 years ago, the government kicked us out of our newspapers.
01:01Yes, they took over Listín Diario, Última Hora, El Expresso, and El Financiero.
01:07Overnight, we were out of work and even stigmatized.
01:10But instead of giving up, we banded together and created Grupo Multidiarios S.A.
01:15with what with few resources, but with a strong desire to do worthwhile journalism.
01:20So we launched, first it was Diarioadiario.com.do, digital of course.
01:26Then we moved into radio with Diario de la Tarde.
01:30And then TV, Diario de la Noche, channels 45 and 52,
01:34and Diario del Domingo, on Color Vision.
01:38All this in just one year.
01:40Yes, we were hyped journalism fans.
01:43In April 2004, we founded Diario at Diario,
01:47a free, independent, and critical weekly,
01:49not to oppose the government, but to do things right.
01:52I was the director along with Ruddy González,
01:55deputy director, and Fabio Cabral, editor-in-chief.
01:58At the time, I said,
02:00a new media outlet in our country is always good news.
02:03More options for readers, more democracy,
02:05and it will be free because we believe in access to information.
02:10It lasted ten years until many of us returned to our positions
02:13following a Supreme Court ruling,
02:15but that experience made one thing clear to us.
02:17Independent journalism does exist if it's done seriously,
02:21not with clickbait, respecting the law,
02:24but without self-censorship.
02:25Also, if it's done without fear of power,
02:28or of those who tell you,
02:29don't publish that,
02:31and above all, without selling out to dark interests,
02:34for Listine Diario, voiceover and translation by Danny Leon.
02:38Listine Diario presented Sunday Reflections.
