The ostrich is the largest and heaviest bird in the world. Although it cannot fly, it is native to Africa and typically lives in open areas, especially savannas. Ostriches can grow up to 2.5 meters tall and weigh up to 150 kilograms. Despite being flightless, they can run at speeds of up to 70 kilometers per hour thanks to their strong legs, making them the fastest land bird.

Ostriches have very large eyes—about 5 centimeters in diameter—which helps them see clearly over long distances. They are mostly herbivorous, feeding on seeds, leaves, and sometimes insects. Since they don’t have teeth, they swallow small stones to help grind up food in their stomachs.

Ostriches are also known for their enormous eggs. Female ostriches lay the largest eggs of any living land animal, with each egg weighing around 1.5 kilograms. The incubation period lasts about 40 to 45 days, and it’s usually the male ostrich that guards the eggs at night.

When it comes to defense, ostriches are very capable. In the face of danger, they can deliver powerful kicks, strong enough to fend off large predators like lions. These features make them very well-adapted for survival in the wild.
