00:00pope pope leo the 14th appearing on the balcony and i think for many people it was a surprise
00:04most people thought that he was too young being 69 that he was relatively made recently made a
00:11cardinal so only made a cardinal in 2023 and finally that he was american we thought there
00:16would never be an american pope but now that he has been elected it makes total sense you know
00:21he would be known across the world by bishops because he was the head of the department of the
00:25vatican selecting bishops and is considered you know good humored intelligent has a global experience
00:31he's really not just an american pope but he's a pope of the americas because he's a naturalized
00:36peruvian citizen you know having been a missionary in 20 for over a third of his life in peru so this
00:42is a great day of rejoicing so we're all of us around the world are praying and giving thanks
00:46to god for the election of of pope leo do you think that the picture donald trump set out there of him
00:51being the pope had any sway as to now we have an american pope remember the one where he he dressed
00:56himself up as a pope and i think he dropped it on his socials
01:00well um one of the things is that people said about prevost is that if he was going to be elected
01:07only because he's the least american of americans so actually there's a bit of controversy at the
01:12moment because one of the last things he tweeted um from his ex account was actually a kind of
01:17criticism of jd um vance and some of the policies so it's not him doing it himself but retweeting
01:22so he there will be tensions i imagine in the future with regards to the pope who is going to
01:28be continuing you know with this great strain of social justice the care for the poor for migrants
01:33for the dispossessed and really he was saying in his very first you know message from the balcony
01:38i'm you know peace be with you he wants to be a peace builder bridge builder so i think there will
01:44be you know so it's a great rejoicing and i'm glad that the american president is happy that it's
01:48american but it's it's it's not going to be sailing i imagine yeah there's um there's a good
01:54profile of uh pope leo in the daily mail today the headline reads tennis playing cardinal who fired
02:00volleys at trump on social media he mentioned one there he replied to jd vance or at least retweeted
02:05jd vance saying that the vice president was wrong jesus doesn't ask us to rank our love for others
02:11and he separately retweeted a post that said donald trump was as president uh illicitly deporting
02:19u.s residents so definitely not afraid to to voice his mind just explain for me brendan why
02:25for non-catholics watching and listening to you now why it was so emotional for you
02:29seeing him uh pope leo step out yesterday on the balcony does the the church is a family and so our
02:37family we our father our holy father the spiritual father had died so there's this kind of mourning
02:42and then there's we're kind of in limbo there's a kind of liminal space we're all sitting in
02:47you know nervous because you know this the man who was elected pope was going to affect my whole life
02:53so particularly as one who is really engaged catholic and everything that he's going to say
02:57has a huge impact so we are delighted that the church has a holy father again we need that leadership
03:03and we you know we give him our our fealty our prayers all of our support and look forward to
03:09the ways in which he's going to lead the church so there's just kind of emotion the same way that
03:12like if you had lost your you know a loved one and they were found again somehow so there's that level
03:17of depth of emotion yeah that's one wonderful moment really a lot of it does seem that a lot more
03:24younger people are turning to the church now uh we're reading the the you know the sort of people
03:30the numbers for the catholic church in particular are rising have you heard that brendan yeah i have
03:36wonderful time to to be a christian um so i'm a trustee of the bible society which produced this
03:42report called a quiet revival so the idea is that we've been used to this trend of secularization
03:47right the numbers are always going down but these predictions you know never predict that people
03:52might get sick of secularity that they might want something more that our lives are made for purpose
03:57and so this report was suggesting is the wave coming back in of religious belief we see the
04:02numbers in general rise from eight percent to twelve percent but highest among gen z so the future looks
04:08like you know we're not talking a huge onset revival but quietly that the the church is growing it's not
04:14inevitable decline and so i for one am very excited about how pope leo is going to you know be a be part
04:20of that to continue to build this momentum yeah great brendan alejandro thank you very much
