00:00We are backstage at the 60th annual ACM Awards with one of our performers, Mr. Eric Church.
00:05How are you?
00:06Good, Katie. How are you?
00:07I'm doing very well. Thank you.
00:08You just released your new album, Evangeline vs. The Machine, a few weeks ago.
00:12Talk about what this collection of songs means to you.
00:15Well, it's an album.
00:16I mean, it's eight songs.
00:17It's meant to be listened to in one setting.
00:20There's no break between any of the songs.
00:22It starts track one, it ends track eight.
00:24And in the world we live in now, disposable as it is and hectic as it is,
00:29it was important to me to put out something that was the opposite of that.
00:33And the creativity with the title, so Evangeline, at least to me, represents creativity.
00:38And The Machine is all the stuff that happens in the world that tries to choke that creativity out.
00:42So that's the essence of what this album is.
00:45Talk about your performance on the show for the ACMs.
00:48We're doing the lead single off Evangeline, which is Hands of Time.
00:52And as I get older, I get more gray.
00:56I'm looking for things, honestly, that make me feel younger.
00:59And music does that for me.
01:01I can hear a song and I'm transported to 16, 17, 18 years old.
01:06And this song's about that.
01:08There's so many great shout-outs to songs that I assume are your favorites.
01:11Did you have a hard time kind of whittling down which ones to use?
01:15Yeah, I mean, all the songs and all the artists that did those songs I have a memory with.
01:19It just has to be good, right?
01:20If you're going to shout-out somebody, it's got to be a good song.
01:22So all those are really good songs.
01:23They absolutely are.
01:24You were also headed out on tour.
01:25You recently announced.
01:26Talk about that.
01:26Yeah, we're heading out in September.
01:28Yes.
01:28So it's going to be the first time we've done that in a while.
01:31And we're taking strings and horns and choir and the whole deal with us.
01:36So it'll be the first time we've...
01:37Nobody's seen us, all the times we've played, hasn't seen us like this.
01:41What are the logistics like touring with a choir?
01:43It's a lot.
01:44Yeah, I'm sure it is.
01:45Well, I'll tell you, I'll let you know in December, okay?
01:47Let me know.
01:47I don't know yet.
01:49Before we wrap up and send you out of here, you've got a feature on Morgan's new album
01:52that comes out next week.
01:53I know the two of you are very close.
01:54What did you think when he sent you over this song?
01:56Well, we were together a lot.
01:58We were actually on a golf trip and he mentioned, you know, he said, I got this song and sent
02:02me the song and I love the song.
02:04And I said, yeah, let's do it.
02:05So I went to the studio and cut it and it's really good.
02:09I'm proud of it.
02:09I'm excited about his record next week too.
02:11Yeah, it'll be amazing.
02:12Eric, thank you so much for stopping by to take time.
02:14We're really excited to see the performance tonight on the ACM Awards.
