00:00Derek Sterling born on 5th, 1961 in Upper Hutt, Wellington, New Zealand.
00:05He made his test debut for New Zealand against Pakistan in November 1984 at Lahore during
00:11the first test of the series.
00:12In his very first outing with the red ball, the right-arm fast medium baller showed good
00:17performance.
00:18He picked up two wickets for 71 runs in the first innings, a steady performance, a subcontinent
00:23pitch that did not offer much help to the seamers.
00:26In the second innings, Derek Sterling continued to put in the hard yards and ended with a
00:31figure of 1 for 60.
00:33While these may not be eye-popping numbers, his overall effort on test debut shows glimpse
00:38of talent, control and the ability to adapt to tough Asian conditions.
00:43So let's take a moment to relive his debut bowling performance, a fine display from a
00:47baller who often went under the radar.
00:54first runs for Pakistan, tucked away down to long leg, chat field to the fielder, and Pakistan

03:34Derrick Sterling did not get many chances to wear the Black Cap's jersey.
03:39And perhaps deserved more recognition than he received.
03:42His career may not have been taken off the way fans hoped.
03:46But his commitment and skill on Death's debut remains a proud chapter in KV Cricket history.
03:51Derrick Sterling, a solid, right-arm, fast-medium baller from New Zealand, crossed onto the
03:56first-class scenes with a bang.
03:58At just 19 years old, he grabbed six wickets for 75 runs against Northern Districts in January
04:051982.
04:06His best ever bowling figures.
04:08It looked like a star was on the rise.
04:10But Derrick Sterling's path was not easy.
04:12He spent much of his career in the shadow of the great Richard Hadley.
04:16Derrick Sterling made his ODI debut in Sri Lanka at the tail end of the 1983-84 season,
04:23surprisingly before even being picked for a young New Zealand tour to Zimbabwe.
04:28Then came a big break.
04:29He played all three test matches on the tough 1984-85 tour of Pakistan.
04:35He held his own on challenging pitches, specially shining with 4 for 88 in the Karachi Test.
04:41However, just before New Zealand's famous back-to-back series wins against Australia
04:46in 1985-86, Derrick Sterling was dropped.
04:49He did not give up, though, and took 26 wickets in domestic cricket and earned a spot on the 1986
04:56England tour.
04:57One of his key moments came at Nottingham, where he dismissed Tarek Pringle in the second
05:02innings to help secure a victory that was slipping away.
05:05But his last test at the Oval did not go to plan.
05:09On a pace-friendly track, he balled two shots and was smashed for 24 runs in a single-over
05:14by returning Ian Botham.
05:16Not the ending he would have wanted.
05:18Derrick Sterling also spent some time playing cricket league in Scotland back in 1984, showcasing
05:24his love for the game, who went beyond international borders.

06:5044.
