00:00Bruce Yardley, the willy of spinner from Australia, delivered a spell worth remembering in Pakistan's
00:06second innings of the second test at Brisbane in 1981. Bruce Yardley bowled with subtle flight,
00:12clever variation, and an unwavering discipline to return figures of four for 77 from 24 overs,
00:20including four maidens. His victims were no ordinary names. He removed Majid Khan,
00:25Zaheer Abbas, Imran Khan, and Sarfraz Nawaz, each a pillar of Pakistan's batting and cricketing
00:31identity. These golden moments have faded into the deep shelves of cricketing history,
00:37sitting quietly in the archives while the modern game race is on. So take a moment,
00:42return to this classic encounter, relive the revolving drift and dip of Bruce Yardley's spell
00:48and enjoy the beauty of a spinner who knew how to make the ball talk.
00:55Thompson, Greg Chappell brought Yardley into the attack, and he certainly didn't let his skipper down.
01:04That's gone straight to Greg Chappell, and he's out, caught absolutely. So,
01:07had a very casual shot there by Majid, going for the big drive straight away, and the ball just
01:13lobbing up to Greg Chappell, who very casually caught it and threw it away.
01:18Certainly a very casual piece of cricket here. Archer attempted to drive, the ball drifts away on him a
01:23little, and Greg Chappell takes a very simple catch, waist height, and just tosses it away,
01:29as though he does it every day. Majid is now on his way. Pakistan have lost three wickets for 115.
01:37Just one short of his 100 now, Greg Chappell, and you can see where that puts him.
01:42Right in there on 99, with five people in the history of test cricket above him.
01:54And all of the players above him, of course, played in a fair few more test matches than he did,
01:59than he has.
02:05Just Bobby Simpson, in fact, has only played 62, Chappell, 69. One to go for his 100.
02:12On the right across the line, then he's giving him out, Zaheer, out to LBW. So what a great
02:22over this is for Australia, and Bruce Loddy. That was also a very casual shot there from Zaheer,
02:27trying to hit it away down on the next side, and out LBW.
02:33Once again, it was the drift that fooled Zaheer, and that ball pitching very full,
02:38hitting Zaheer right in front of off stump, and a very delighted Bruce Yardley has taken the wicket
02:43of Zaheer, who is out for a duck. Two wickets in this over to Bruce Yardley. Very fine performance
02:51from him, and Australia right in this game now, as Pakistan have fallen to four for 115.
02:58Falling to Imran Khan.
03:02Oh, and there's a big appeal there for LBW, and that one might have just turned a little bit too much.
03:06Imran trying to pull it away to leg.
03:11Imran, I think, banking on the spin rather too much. Marshes down the leg side notice,
03:17but I think Lillie would probably endorse what...
03:19And Bruce Yardley to come in, rolling over the wicket now, to Imran Khan.
03:26Still getting that little bit of drift away, and just a bit of spin back.
03:29That's in big trouble. Don't think Imran's going to be too pleased about that.
03:39Not at all pleased. He's kept to be even less pleased. Yardley is delighted, so is Greg Chappell.
03:45And Imran's going the other way. The only reason he's going the other way is to pick up his helmet.
03:52Well, he might want to put it right over his head as he walks back after that shot.
03:57Catch out there by Dirk Wellham. Imran Khan has caught Wellham.
04:01Bold Yardley, a very disconsolate. Imran walks out now, and it's seven for 189. That really was a sacrifice.
04:10Ajar, and we've seen a couple of wickets for in the last few hours. So eight for 219. Two runs,
04:16make Australia a better game.
04:17In the air, down deep mid, on, and the fourth victim for Bruce Yardley.
04:25Caught down there by Terry Alderman. Safra's looking for the straight hit.
04:30So, Pakistan still needing two runs to make Australia a better game.
04:35And Safra's going for the big one there, down the ground. He has been narrowed in a few big sixes,
04:39and Alderman moving around a bit, but taking that very well. It was a very, very high hit, that one.
04:45Stayed up there for a long time. It's very cleanly taken. Safra's moves off the ground. Nine.
04:52Cricket charms often lies in the quiet brilliance of moments that time nearly forgets.
04:57These old matches remind us that the game is not just about scorecards and results,
05:02but the artistry, resilience, and character displayed on the field.
05:07Although Australia eventually sealed the match by ten wickets,
05:10Bruce Yardley craftsmanship remained one of the true highlights.
05:14These were the days when spin-balling was an art, not about speed or mystery, but sheer guile and
05:20courage. Watching such vintage spell is like opening an old cricket rear chest,
05:26brushing away the dust of the time, and rediscovering the heartbeat of the game.
05:30When we revisit these classic performances, we reconnect with the every spirit of the cricket,
05:36where skill met patience, where battles were fought session by session, and where heroes were made
05:42through pure craftsmanship. So as you watch this clip, take a moment to appreciate the legacy it
05:49represents. This is cricket in its purest form, timeless, elegant, and unforgettable.
