Scientists have been able to capture real-time 3D footage of blood flowing through the human body, which could help doctors observe the function of multiple organs at the same time.

00:15Explorer combines two common scans positron emission tomography aka a PET

00:20scan and computed tomography better known as a CT scan the footage follows the

00:25tracer to the heart before flowing to the lungs back through the left ventricle

00:29and then continuing through the body biomedical engineer professor Jin Ji Chi

00:34from the University of California Davis explains quote we can see global

00:38changes with improved image quality at a timescale of 100 milliseconds which has

00:42never been seen before using any medical imaging modalities the team says the

00:47tracer also contained less radiation than your average PET scan while also being

00:51faster at scanning the body in 3d in one go than machines currently in use at

00:56hospitals the researchers hope Explorer will be able to better help diagnose

01:00diseases track how cancer and infections are spread as well as improve
