00:00Welcome. It's time for Overheard on 3rd.
00:02So a lot of folks have been keeping in touch
00:04because it's harder to actually see folks in person
00:07when it comes to communication.
00:09Here's the question.
00:10Speaking of which.
00:11Which is better, to actually pick up a phone
00:14or to text somebody?
00:16If you leave it at home, it doesn't matter.
00:18I think call the person, don't you?
00:22Absolutely.
00:23Absolutely.
00:24See, but then that goes into,
00:25I called to thank you for something once
00:27and you said the call wasn't good enough.
00:29If you said, I want a handwritten note.
00:31Well, yes, well, that goes beyond.
00:33That goes beyond.
00:35Just to say, just to say hello, phone call is fine.
00:39Tell us about the study, Al.
00:40Well, the study from the Journal of Experimental Psychology.
00:44Wow.
00:47Do you really want experimental psychology?
00:50A phone call makes people happier
00:53and closer to the other person.
00:55We have not heard what Craig Melfin thinks.
00:56Oh, I think it just depends on what you are communicating.
01:02I don't know if everything warrants,
01:04if everything warrants a phone call.
01:05I agree with that.
01:06But if you're checking in with a friend,
01:08yeah, I think if you want to check in with someone,
01:10you should pick up the phone and call.
01:13Yes.
01:13Although sometimes I find it difficult
01:17because say it's somebody I haven't talked to in a long time,
01:20I know it's going to be a long phone call.
01:22Well, interestingly enough,
01:24they say if it's been a long time,
01:27it's actually that people found it was less awkward.
01:30Right, but it's still a long phone call just to catch up
01:32as opposed to, so then I don't end up calling that person
01:35because I know it's going to be a long phone call.
01:37So I don't text because I shouldn't call.
01:39And then I end up just not talking to them.
01:40But what if you just you put a certain time limit
01:42or you say, hey, I know we haven't talked in a long time.
01:45I got, I got a few minutes.
01:46I just wanted to see how you were doing it.
01:48Oh, I like that.
01:49Still in.
01:49I should try that.
01:50Yeah, that's really good.
01:50Some people still just keep talking.
01:52You're like, all right, I got to run.
01:53And they're like, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
01:54So you just have a bell.
01:57Yeah, you go. Bing. Sorry, my time's up.
01:58All right.
01:59That's good, though.
02:00That's a good thing.
02:00Next.
