Museum of Brisbane showcasing vintage treasures by Queensland collectors

Some extraordinary objects collected by Queenslanders over the years are being presented at the Museum of Brisbane’s precious exhibition.

00:13It's a really beautiful show and a really accessible show for everyone.

00:18I think for visitors to the city, they'll certainly get a sense of,

00:21oh, well these are some stories about people who live here.

00:24What can I learn about this city through this exhibition?

00:28Collecting objects and artefacts has long been a process throughout time

00:32that preserves a piece of history,

00:34and collectors have effectively become hands-on historians.

00:38One of the many collectors that's featured in the Museum of Brisbane's

00:41precious exhibition is Donny Tahire.

00:44Donny, thanks so much for joining us on News Breakfast.

00:47Good morning.

00:48Tell me a bit about what's going on here.

00:50What do you have in your collections?

00:52It sort of varies to a slight degree,

00:55but it's mostly things that are surrounding or relating to Brisbane,

00:59which sort of makes sense to me because we kind of live here.

01:03I kind of live here, but I think if I lived in Adelaide,

01:05it'd be all Adelaide stuff, so yeah.

01:07And you've got ceramics, records, posters.

01:10How did you get into that?

01:12I guess it all just starts with one piece,

01:15and then it just multiplies from there, you know,

01:17because no two things are ever the same.

01:19And when you have an eclectic taste like I do,

01:22you can, you know, develop quite a big collection of things

01:25because you might collect music that's punk or jazz or blues

01:30or, you know, unusual things.

01:32So, yeah, and it just all of a sudden just starts to multiply.

01:35These are just some of the wonderful treasures

01:38collected by everyday Queenslanders,

01:40now on show to the world as part of the precious exhibition.

01:44And for Mikey Hilberger, you could say he's got razor-sharp taste.

01:49It's only part of my axe collection, about 30 of them here,

01:53and it's a big variety from sort of around the world,

01:56and they're all different types for different jobs,

01:59but, yeah, it's pretty impressive.

02:01And tell me what got you into collecting axes?

02:04I started it through doing competition barbecue,

02:07and we had to chop firewood to fire up the smokers,

02:10so it just seemed right to have a really nice axe,

02:13and one turned into two, and two turned into 120.

02:17Mikey's wife, Lizzie, also a keen collector,

02:20but for the more softer things in life.

02:23I started collecting in my mid-twenties,

02:26and I really appreciated the domestic side of women's needlework,

02:33from everyday wear to their dresses to beaded bags to linens,

02:40and I think the beaded area of purses particularly attracted me with their fine design.

02:46Textiles are often difficult to preserve because they don't like humidity,

02:51they don't like sunlight, they don't like damp,

02:54so really the purses don't come out unless there's an event like this.

02:59It's a real honour to be invited to have your collection displayed at somewhere like this,

03:05and for it to be up for a year for people to see is wonderful.

03:10So, as I said, they stay in the dark otherwise,

03:14so it's an opportunity for them to shine.

03:16And shine they do.
