Lewis Hamilton on Being Named Met Gala Co-Chair

F1 driver Lewis Hamilton speaks about his history with the Met Gala and being named co-chair.

00:00We are here with Lewis Hamilton who was just at the Grand Prix in Miami recently but now you're

00:05here and you look fly as ever. Made it. So look this is the 10th anniversary of your first Met

00:09Gala. Now you're the co-chair. Like what emotions was flying through your body when Anna called you

00:15and asked you to be a part of such a huge moment? It's really an extension of the you know 2021

00:19where I bought a table here and brought black designers and really created an amazing evening

00:25and and then after that speaking with Anna and just starting to collaborate on what the Met could

00:31grow to and and what it could one day be and we're in London and she told me the theme and I was I was

00:39so so excited and then she asked me to be the co-chair and in that moment for sure I couldn't

00:43believe I was like right I'm like what are you gonna say no of course it's a yes and I'm incredibly honored

00:49and she's been amazing to work with. You pulled up on us but you're also into fashion on the Formula

00:54one track right? That's the thing you're known for right? You always pull up in fashion. How did

00:58fashion become such a big part of your life? Well when I was younger I really felt like I

01:02had to conform particularly in in in the world that I compete in. My father and I are the only

01:07people of color there so there was this real pressure to like conform and I mean as I got

01:12older I realized that found my kind of my sense of of self got confidence from wearing fashion and how

01:19you can express yourself from what you're wearing and after that I went on this journey and that's

01:25fashion has really helped me become the person I am today. I'm just in awe of this look right now

01:42really wanted to pay homage to our culture of Africa by the power of adornment but it's really inspired by
