Independent candidate Alex Dyson speaks to The Standard as polls shut

Wannon independent candidate Alex Dyson drew a large crowd at Friendly Societies' Park in Warrnambool as counts in the 2025 federal election began to roll in, receiving a round of applause on arrival.

00:00So Alex, how can you feel about the Ports of Close?

00:05Yeah, it's an incredible feeling as you can see so many people out here who have put in

00:10so much work by talking to locals, seeing the concerns and then advocating for a better

00:18deal for the area and so it's a combination of a lot of organisation, a lot of willpower

00:24and a big desire to just make things better and so surrounded by that much love and that

00:30many smiles, you can't help but feel good.

00:32What did you want to turn out like to make the Ports of Close?

00:36Yeah, it seemed really, really good, like I was on my old primary school booth, good old

00:43Jammo and so it was really nice chatting to people there but also made it to Port Ferry,

00:48made it to Pam Muir, made it to Rang and Camperdown and got to meet a bunch of people.

00:54Even right at the end so it was really, really nice and yeah, a lot of people pre-polled

01:00as well though so it's been a big session and now we just sit and wait for the results.

01:09I think we could not have done any more in this campaign, the energy and the positivity

01:15we've put into it, the amount of videos and conversations and the volunteers cutting out

01:22little Kelpie dogs as well, like so much has gone in and so yeah, I'm just so chuffed and

01:29as one of the volunteers said, we've already won, we wanted to get one national attention,

01:34we wanted to make sure Canberra is listening to us and we can see on the TV we're already

01:41getting a lot more mentions than we've got in the last few decades and so really excited

01:47by that and hope that's by just getting close, if we can win I reckon we can do some really

01:52great things as well.

01:53I, well I'm torn because the energy of a campaign like this is so incredible, I would love to

02:06do that again but I'm also someone who likes to know when he can take a hint so I'll have

02:12to weigh that up and see if the people who want it need another Alex Dyson tilt but I'm

02:19more than happy, I'm going to be as happier than anyone that my face comes down from people's

02:24fences after this because I'm sick of my own mug looking back at me but I think it'll hopefully

02:31be all worth it so that we can deliver on the roads, get the childcare waitlist down, help

02:36out the farmers like if we could do that great but we'll see what happens.
