00:28I used to get super excited about new cameras because

01:05But but in the last five or ten years video cameras have gotten really good
01:10Whether you use a big camera a little camera or your phone
01:13They're all really good, but it hasn't always been this way when I first started making videos
01:18The camera was more of an obstacle that I had to overcome
01:21It was the obstacle that stood between me and my idea my video
01:25But those days are over
01:28No more dealing with tapes
01:30No more messing with this beautiful machine
01:32Now for the most part cameras just work
01:34They're all good enough
01:36We've reached a camera quality plateau
01:39Gone are the big leaps in camera quality
01:41And now we just have these little incremental improvements
01:44That's the rule of diminishing returns
01:46When technology keeps getting better, but just incrementally so
01:50It's a good thing, but a little bit less exciting

02:09While flying cameras have introduced an entirely new genre of cinematography to YouTube videos
02:15Early drones, they kind of sucked
02:21But in the last decade they too have matured to such a degree that
02:25I literally never used this big awesome pro drone
02:29Because because this little drone it's good enough
02:33We live in a magical time where cameras no longer obstruct the creator
02:40But rather enable
02:42If you weren't around for these things
02:45It might be hard to appreciate just how good we've got it
02:51So my go-to camera setup is always
02:53A main camera whether it's this or my phone
02:56A drone, usually a little one
02:58And a 360 camera
03:00The 360 camera has been a part of the go-to arsenal for the last couple of years
03:09But unlike a video camera, which is mature technology
03:13And drone, which is approaching maturity

03:19They're just coming out of their infancy
03:21There's still a lot to be desired

03:51The camera technology wasn't
03:53It was terrible back then
03:54But also
03:55We didn't know what 360 cameras were good for
03:58Like that video is a 360 video where you put on a headset

04:02No one wants that
04:03We know that now
04:04We know what camera
04:06360 camera technology is good for now
04:08And the hardware
04:10Is just catching up
04:12It's just getting good
04:14360 cameras enable a style of cinematography

04:39Before this 360 camera existed

05:15About the hardware

05:17This is what 360 camera hardware looked like
05:21When I started using it
05:22You would take these cameras
05:24Plug them into like this 3D printed plastic thing
05:27And then using like pretty complicated software
05:31You would stitch all the images together
05:34To get this spherical image
05:36It was a nightmare
05:37It was impossible
05:38It was impossible
05:47But with the last couple generations of consumer 360 cameras
05:51I feel like the hardware has finally arrived
05:58And when Insta360 asked me
05:59This is like a branded video
06:01When they asked me if I'd make this video about their new X5
06:05I was like send it to me
06:07Let me check it out
06:08And I think with this
06:10Latest 360 camera
06:12They finally overcame all like
06:15What I saw is like the last outstanding major hurdles
06:18To make this mainstream and super usable
06:21So like you know it shoots in 8k now
06:23So the image is great
06:24Bigger sensor size
06:25It works great in low light
06:26It's waterproof without a case
06:29The AI makes editing easy
06:31The battery lasts longer
06:32But there were two features
06:34Two features that I care about
06:37That I wouldn't think other people care about
06:39But I care about them a lot
06:41A scratched lens on a 360 camera used to be a kiss of death
06:54Because these cameras capture a spherical image
06:57The lenses have to extrude a little bit from the camera
07:00See most cameras they've got something to protect the lens
07:05Like when you put it down
07:06Even on like my phone my case protects it
07:09The lens is like super duper vulnerable
07:12So no matter how you put it down
07:15If you don't have it in a case or whatever
07:17The lens will always get messed up
07:20Say you're capturing a low angle shot of you on a skateboard
07:23And your camera touches the ground
07:25Toast
07:32They fixed that
07:55That is the old lens
08:09And even though I scraped up the camera
08:12That's the new lens
08:13I can't believe that worked because
08:15I mean I told Insta360 I was going to do this
08:17But they only sent me one
08:18They only sent me one replacement lens
08:21This is the only camera I have
08:23And I didn't read these directions
08:26So if it hadn't worked
08:28I'm not sure I could finish this video
08:30Can't imagine they'd be psyched by that
08:31But it worked
08:32And one of the biggest problems with 360 cameras solved
08:36The other issue I have is the selfie stick
08:40In order to get this shot
08:42You have to have a selfie stick
08:43Without it
08:44I had it in my teeth for that shot

08:58It's just cumbersome
